Character from left to right; Gretchen Wieners, Regina George, Cady Heron, and Karen Smith

Wait, if this is a fragrance training why are the characters from Mean Girls in this portion?Well Karen, erh, I mean fellow cast members you can't just ask questions before the training has even begun! Now to honestly answer that question we know these characters as some very pretty and very mean girls, but if you take a minute to stop and analyze each girl you'll find they serve as pretty great teachers when it comes to confidence.

Embracing Your Confidence Each girl represents their own kind of confidence - each with positive and negative attributes - and I've broken them down in this portion of your training.

"So you agree, you think you're really pretty?" -Regina George

Two Blondes, A Brunette, and A Red Head

Karen Smith is your typical dumb blonde but if you take a look closer you'll realize Karen does something that many people today have a hard time doing, embracing your stupidity. Everyday we help over a dozen clients, each one spewing out question after question expecting answer after answer. A lot of the time we know the answer(s) to our client's questions. Most of the time we can answer their questions without hesitation and accurately. So what happens when we get a question we don't know? Obviously we ask for answers Nolan, duh. Well yes that’s true, but do you ever stop and actually feel good about knowing something that may seem a little obvious to everyone else? Or maybe feel a little bummed that you didn't know an answer when your job title has the word expert in it? To answer that question I'm sure we can assume, yes, is the answer every once in a while. So when it comes to fragrance, a world you may not be to familiar with I like to say; Embrace your inner Karen! Admit you don’t know the answer and be open to learning. We don’t know everything and that’s okay!

Gretchen Wieners was said only to be popular because her dad invented Toaster Strudel, but from an out side perspective we can learn something from this mean girl. Through out the movie Gretchen Wieners wants one thing and one thing only; to be Regina's best friend. Persistent Gretchen tries again and each time is swiftly dismissed by Regina until at one point Gretchen just can't take it anymore. So what can we learn from this? When it comes to fragrance one thing you have to accept is clients don't always want help. You could be the nicest person in the world and still get rejected. Seriously take it from me. And why is that? Think about other retailers, usually fragrance is a highly pushed item and the romance behind it has been stripped away. When your passionate about something and want to show it, it can be frustrating when people don't want anything to do with you and your so called passion. The key here is not to be persistent but to just let the client know she has other options and move on. By the end of the movie we see Gretchen sitting with a new group of friends - her other options - but most importantly we see she hasn't stopped sharing her passion for wanting to be with certain people. So when a client shoots down your expert advice just show her, her options and embrace your inner Gretchen Wieners and move on! But just remember its like totally not fetch to forget to share your passion with other clients.

Now I want to look at two characters side by side. Regina George and Cady Heron. Cady starts out as a new girl and Regina, the most popular girl in school, takes Cady under her wing. Through the movie we see Cady's transformation into someone more mean and more popular than Regina her self. What we can take away from these two character are two things; One, it becomes clear Regina isn't the best with compliments. In one scene Regina comments on a class mates skirt and as soon as her fellow class mate is gone she turns to Cady and says….well lets leave out her comment, just know it wasn't very nice. When a client ask your opinion about a fragrance she tried on tell her the truth and nothing but the truth. Consider yourself the head lawyer in case no. 934 where its your job to make sure your client leaves guilty free and proud to walk amongst the streets with her new fragrance. So just remember, you're the most popular girl in school, your opinion matters, if the "skirt" doesn't look cute let her know! Two, Cady slowly becomes a more powerful version of Regina eventually replacing her near the end of the film. But then something happens. Cady, like Regina, loses her closest friends. Why? Because both Regina and Cady lost themselves. When selling a fragrance its your personality that ties it all together, not the story, not Fragrance IQ, its you. And when you forget to share your personal stories, your passion, your vulnerability, clients aren't as interested in buying something. To sell a fragrance you have to be willing to open up and share why you truly love that fragrance, and be honest. Now I'm not saying share your deepest darkest secrets. No. What I'm saying is bring the fragrance to life with your own energy and positivity. If you think about it fragrances really do have personality, and we wear them according to how we feel or want to feel. What we can learn from these two mean girls is to embrace being yourself and being willing to encourage others to do the same. Now that is what confidence is all about!
