INSTALLATION

1. Punch or drill hole in .040in (1.02mm) minimum thick sheet a distance of .33in (8.4mm) minimum from hole center to edge. Do not deburr hole edges.

2. Insert standoff through hole in sheet and into the anvil as shown.

3. Squeeze the sheet and standoff head between parallel punch and anvil sur- faces. Use only enough pressure to seat the standoff head flush with the sheet. Punch and anvil may be ordered using PENCOM part numbers TL1287 and TL1288, respectively, or made from har- dened tool steel.

INSTALLATION

1. Punch or drill hole in sheet. Insert a male threaded fastener through hole in the sheet and secure the standoff. In some applications it may be desirable to install a washer between the head of the male threaded fastener and sheet.

2. Tighten the assembly by torquing the male threaded fastener 4.0 to 5.5 in-lbs (4-40) or 0.51 to 0.69 N-m (M3). PENCOM recommends a minimum thread en- gagement of .112in (4-40) or 3.0mm (M3) between the male and female threads. Installation torques are for zinc-plated Grade 2 (inch) or Class 4.8 (metric) carbon steel screws and for reference only. The majority of joint tightening torque is used to overcome friction under the rotating member face. Many factors can affect the amount of resulting friction such as rotating mem- ber surface area and finish, and sheet hole size and finish. PENCOM recommends testing in the application.

3. Due to the inelastic nature and unpredictable friction coefficients of stainless steel, torque calculations can be unreliable and specifications should be determined through testing.

4. One method of determining the installation torque uses 50% of the failure torque as developed through testing in the appliation and applying a ±20% tolerance.

INSTALLATION

1. Punch or drill hole in sheet. Insert the standoff male thread through hole in sheet and secure with a female threaded fastener. In some applications it may be desir- able to install a washer between the female threaded fastener and sheet.

2. Tighten the assembly by torquing the female threaded fastener 3.2 to 4.3 in-lbs (4-40) or 0.32 to 0.43 N-m (M3). PENCOM recommends a minimum thread engage- ment of .112in (4-40) or 3.0mm (M3) between the male and female threads. Installation torques are for zinc-plated carbon steel standoffs and for reference only. The major- ity of joint tightening torque is used to overcome friction under the rotating member face. Many factors can affect the amount of resulting friction such as rotating member surface area and finish, and sheet hole size and finish. PENCOM recommends testing in the application.

3. Due to the inelastic nature and unpredictable friction coefficients of stainless steel, torque calculations for this material can be unreliable. One method of determining the installation torque uses 50% of the failure torque as developed through testing in the application and applying a ±20% tolerance.

OPTION

A variety of thread locking and lubricating materials can be applied to the threads. Nylon (shown), micro-en-capsuated epoxy and other locking elements prevent loosening due to vibration. Lubricating coatings reduce friction, heat buildup and galling during installation of mating fasteners. To specify a nylon locking element, insert PATCH at the end of the part description. Other locking and lubricating materials available by request.
