Let all adore thee, High on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory: Claim the kingdom for thine own. O come quickly Alleluya! Come, Lord, come! THE ADVENT WREATH Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, you are our Saviour, the true light that has come into the world. In this Advent season, we ask you to bless all who gather round this Advent Wreath, which we honour as a remembrance of your first coming at Bethlehem, your coming amongst us in grace and your final coming in glory. Strengthen our hearts with the example of your love that we may receive you with joy and gladness on the day of our redemption when you will come to reign as Universal King for ever and ever. Amen. The fourth candle, called the Church’s Candle, is lit to remind us of our calling to be God’s people, working for the bringing about of his Kingdom. We light this Advent Candle, We light it and we sing, As we look for Jesus’ coming As our Saviour and our King. O, one is for the Prophets, And for the light they bring. They are candles in the darkness, All alight for Christ the King. And two for John the Baptist; He calls on us to sing: “O prepare the way for Jesus Christ, He is coming, Christ the King.” And three for Mother Mary, “I cannot see the way, But you promise me a baby. I believe you. I obey.” And four are for God’s people In every age and day. We are watching for his coming. We believe and we obey.

Lord  Jesus,  you  came  among  us  and  are  present  still  by  the  power  of  the  Holy  Spirit.       Lord,  have  mercy.   Lord,  have  mercy.  Lord  Jesus,  you  form  a  people  for  yourself  in  every  age.       Christ,  have  mercy.   Christ,  have  mercy.  Lord  Jesus,  you  are  the  Head  of  the  Body,  the  Church.       Lord,  have  mercy.   Lord,  have  mercy.  The  Priest  pronounces  the  Absolution.    THE  OPENING  PRAYER

 THE  LITURGY  OF  THE  WORD

THE  FIRST  READING    2  Sam  7:1-‐5,8-‐11,16     SIT

A  reading  from  the  second  book  of  Samuel

Once  David  had  settled  into  his  house  and  the  Lord  had   given   him   rest   from   all   the   enemies  surrounding   him,   the   king   said   to   the   prophet  Nathan,  ‘Look,  I  am  living  in  a  house  of  cedar  while  the  ark  of  God  dwells  in  a  tent.’  Nathan  said  to  the  king,   ‘Go   and   do   all   that   is   in   your  mind,   for   the  Lord  is  with  you.’   But   that   very  night   the  word  of   the   Lord   came   to  Nathan:   ‘Go   and   tell   my   servant   David,   “Thus   the   Lord  speaks:   Are   you   the  man   to   build  me   a   house   to  dwell   in?   I   took   you   from   the   pasture,   from  following   the   sheep,   to   be   leader   of   my   people  Israel;  I  have  been  with  you  on  all  your  expeditions;  I   have   cut   off   all   your   enemies   before   you.   I   will  give  you  fame  as  great  as  the  fame  of  the  greatest  on  earth.  I  will  provide  a  place  for  my  people  Israel;  I  will  plant  them  there  and  they  shall  dwell   in  that  place   and   never   be   disturbed   again;   nor   shall   the  wicked   continue   to   oppress   them   as   they   did,   in  the  days  when  I  appointed   judges  over  my  people  Israel;   I  will  give  them  rest   from  all   their  enemies.

The   Lord  will  make   you   great;   the   Lord  will  make  you  a  House.  Your  House  and  your  sovereignty  will  always  stand  secure  before  me  and  your  throne  be  established  for  ever.”’

The  Word  of  the  Lord.     Thanks  be  to  God.    RESPONSORIAL      PSALM   Luke  1:46-‐50,53-‐54

±   For  ever  I  will  sing  the  goodness  of  the  Lord.   1   I  will  sing  for  ever  of  your  love,  O  Lord;     through  all  ages  my  mouth  will  proclaim  your  truth.     Of  this  I  am  sure,  that  your  love  lasts  for  ever,     that  your  truth  is  firmly  established  as  the  heavens.   ±   For  ever  I  will  sing  the  goodness  of  the  Lord.   2   ‘I  have  made  a  covenant  with  my  chosen  one;       I  have  sworn  to  David  my  servant:     I  will  establish  your  dynasty  for  ever       and  set  up  your  throne  through  all  ages.’ ±   For  ever  I  will  sing  the  goodness  of  the  Lord.   3   He  will  say  to  me:  ‘You  are  my  father,       my  God,  the  rock  who  saves  me.’     I  will  keep  my  love  for  him  always;     for  with  him  my  covenant  shall  endure. ±   For  ever  I  will  sing  the  goodness  of  the  Lord.    THE  SECOND  READING   Romans  16:25-‐27

A   reading   from   the   letter   of   St   Paul   to   the  Romans

Glory  to  him  who  is  able  to  give  you  the  strength  to  live   according   to   the  Good  News   I   preach,   and   in  which   I   proclaim   Jesus   Christ,   the   revelation   of   a  mystery   kept   secret   for   endless   ages,   but   now   so  clear   that   it   must   be   broadcast   to   pagans  everywhere   to   bring   them   to   the   obedience   of  faith.  This  is  only  what  scripture  has  predicted,  and  it   is   all   part   of   the   way   the   eternal   God   wants  things   to   be.   He   alone   is   wisdom;   give   glory  therefore  to  him  through  Jesus  Christ  for  ever  and  ever.  Amen.

Word  of  the  Lord.     Thanks  be  to  God.    THE  ALLELUIA  VERSE       STAND  Alleluia,  Alleluia!  I  am  the  servant  of  the  Lord:  may  his  will  for  me  be  done.   Alleluia!

THE  HOLY  GOSPEL     Luke  1:26-‐28

The  Lord  be  with  you.     And  also  with  you.

A   reading   from   the   Holy   Gospel   according   to  Luke     ✠    Glory  to  you,  Lord  Jesus  Christ.

The   angel   Gabriel   was   sent   by   God   to   a   town   in  Galilee   called  Nazareth,   to  a   virgin  betrothed   to  a  man  named  Joseph,  of  the  House  of  David;  and  the  virgin’s   name   was   Mary.   He   went   in   and   said   to  her,   ‘Rejoice,   so  highly   favoured!   The   Lord   is  with  you.’  She  was  deeply  disturbed  by  these  words  and  asked   herself   what   this   greeting   could  mean,   but  the  angel  said  to  her,  ‘Mary,  do  not  be  afraid;  you  have  won  God’s  favour.  Listen!  You  are  to  conceive  and  bear  a  son,  and  you  must  name  him  Jesus.  He  will   be   great   and   will   be   called   Son   of   the   Most  High.  The  Lord  God  will  give  him  the  throne  of  his  ancestor   David;   he   will   rule   over   the   House   of  Jacob  for  ever  and  his  reign  will  have  no  end.’  Mary  said   to   the   angel,   ‘But   how   can   this   come   about,  since  I  am  a  virgin?’  ‘The  Holy  Spirit  will  come  upon  you’   the   angel   answered   ‘and   the   power   of   the  Most  High  will   cover   you  with   its   shadow.  And   so  the  child  will  be  holy  and  will  be  called  Son  of  God.  Know   this   too:   your   kinswoman   Elizabeth   has,   in  her   old   age,   herself   conceived   a   son,   and   she  whom   people   called   barren   is   now   in   her   sixth  month,  for  nothing  is   impossible  to  God’  ‘I  am  the  handmaid   of   the   Lord,’   said   Mary   ‘let   what   you  have  said  be  done  to  me.’  And  the  angel  left  her.

The  Gospel  of  the  Lord.     Praise  to  you,  Lord  Jesus  Christ.    HOMILY         SIT    PROFESSION  OF  FAITH     STAND    We   believe   in   one   God,   the   Father,   the  Almighty,   maker   of   heaven   and   earth,   of   all  that  is,  seen  and  unseen.    We  believe  in  one  Lord,  Jesus  Christ,  the  only  Son  of  God,  eternally  begotten  of   the  Father,  God  from  God,  Light  from  Light,  true  God  from  true   God,   begotten,   not   made,   of   one   being  with   the   Father;   through   him   all   things  were  made.   For   us   and   for   our   salvation   he   came

down  from  heaven,  (all  bow:)  was  incarnate  of  the   Holy   Spirit   and   the   Virgin   Mary,   and  became   truly   human.   For   our   sake   he   was  crucified   under   Pontius   Pilate;   he   suffered  death,   and   was   buried.   On   the   third   day   he  rose  again   in   accordance  with   the   Scriptures;  he  ascended  into  heaven  and  is  seated  at  the  right  hand  of  the  Father.  He  will  come  again  in  glory  to  judge  the  living  and  the  dead,  and  his  kingdom  will  have  no  end.    We   believe   in   the   Holy   Spirit,   the   Lord,   the  giver   of   life,   who   proceeds   from   the   Father  and  the  Son.  Who  with  the  Father  and  the  Son  is  worshipped   and   glorified,  who   has   spoken  through  the  prophets.  We  believe  in  one  holy  catholic   and   apostolic   Church.   We  acknowledge  one  baptism  for  the  forgiveness  of   sins.   We   look   for   the   resurrection   of   the  dead,   and   the   life   of   the   world   to   come.    Amen.    THE  PRAYER  OF  THE  FAITHFUL     STAND    Lord,  in  your  mercy,       hear  our  prayer.  At  the  conclusion:    Almighty  God,   you  have  promised   to  hear  our  prayers.  Grant   that   what   we   have   asked   in   faith   we  may   by   your   grace   receive,   through   Jesus  Christ  our  Lord.    Amen.    THE  GREETING  OF  PEACE    We  are  the  Body  of  Christ.     His  Spirit  is  with  us.  The  peace  of  the  Lord  be  always  with  you.     And  also  with  you.  Let  us  offer  each  other  the  sign  of  peace.  All  exchange  the  greeting  of  peace.

The  Lord  be  with  you.     And  also  with  you.  Lift  up  your  hearts.     We  lift  them  to  the  Lord.  Let  us  give  thanks  to  the  Lord  our  God.     It  is  right  to  give  our  thanks  and  praise.  The   Priest   continues   with   the   Preface,   after   which   is  sung:

Holy,   holy,   holy   Lord,   God   of   power   and  might,  heaven  and  earth  are  full  of  your  glory.  Hosanna   in   the   highest.   Blessed   is   he   who  comes   in   the   name   of   the   Lord.   Hosanna   in  the  highest.

COMMUNION  RITE    The  Priest  invites  all  to  join  in  the  Lord's  Prayer.

Our   Father   in   Heaven,   hallowed   be   your  name,  your  kingdom  come,  your  will  be  done  on  earth  as  in  heaven.  Give  us  today  our  daily  bread.  Forgive  us  our  sins  as  we  forgive  those  who   sin  against  us.   Save  us   from   the   time  of  trial  and  deliver  us  from  evil.  For  the  kingdom,  the   power   and   the   glory   are   yours   now   and  forever.    Amen.

Deliver   us,   Lord,   we   pray,   from   every   evil,  graciously  grant  peace  in  our  days,  that,  by  the  help   of   your   mercy,   we   may   be   always   free  from  sin  and  safe  from  all  distress,  as  we  await  the   blessed   hope   and   the   coming   of   our  Saviour,  Jesus  Christ.  As  he  begins  to  break  the  Bread,  the  Priest  says:    We  who  are  many  are  one  body,     for  we  all  share  in  the  one  Bread.    Lamb  of  God,    you  take  away  the  sin  of  the  world,    have  mercy  on  us.  Lamb  of  God,    you  take  away  the  sin  of  the  world,    have  mercy  on  us.  Lamb  of  God,    you  take  away  the  sin  of  the  world,    grant  us  your  peace.

The  Priest  then  invites  the  people  to  Communion:

Behold  the  Lamb  of  God,  behold  him  who  takes  away   the   sin   of   the   world.   Blessed   are   those  called  to  the  supper  of  the  Lamb.

Lord,   I   am   not   worthy   that   you   should  enter   under   my   roof,   but   only   say   the  word  and  my  soul  shall  be  healed.

Those  who  are  to  receive  Holy  Communion  or  a  Blessing  come  forward.

10:00am   COMMUNION  HYMN   TIS  294    1   Behold,  a  rose  is  growing,     of  loveliest  form  and  grace,     as  prophets  sang,  foreknowing;     it  springs  from  Jesse’s  race,     and  comes  a  perfect  flower,     in  midst  of  coldest  winter,     at  deepest  midnight  hour.    2   Isaiah  had  foretold  it     in  words  of  promise  sure,     and  Mary’s  arms  enfold  it—     a  gentle  maiden  pure.     Through  God’s  eternal  will     this  child  to  her  is  given     at  midnight  calm  and  still.    2   This  rose,  whose  fragrance  tender     with  sweetness  fills  the  air,     dispels  with  glorious  splendour     the  darkness  everywhere.     As  human,  yet  true  God,     from  sin  and  death  he  saves  us     and  lightens  every  load.    2   O  Saviour,  child  of  Mary,     you  felt  our  human  woe;     O  Saviour,  King  of  glory,     you  all  our  weakness  know.     Lead  us  at  last,  we  pray,     to  the  full  joys  of  heaven     and  into  endless  day.

FROM THE RECTOR 21 December 2014 Dear Friends, Israel’s long wait is achieved in Mary, true daughter of Zion. First of the line of Christians to engage herself, by her ‘yes’, in the adventure of faith in Christ, she enabled the Word of God to live among men. In this the flesh was of no avail; the Spirit alone worked this marvel. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector
