Women Artists (C/S489)In celebration of the 100th anniversaryof the 19th Constitutional amendment,we are offeringa course featuring the art of women artists. The19th Amendment was passed by Congresson June 4, 1919 and was ratified by the stateson August 26, 1920. The Amendment was animportant step in enfranchising women.

While all artists faced societal challenges, women artists encountered more significantrestrictions than male artists. Women were barred from art training at the national academies. They had almost no opportunities todisplay or to sell their art. After death, their artwas often attributed to male artists. Yet despitethese formidable challenges, a few talented women broke through the barriers. This coursewill explore the works of representative artistsfrom the Renaissance until today. HISTORY The World Surrounding “DOWNTONABBEY” (C/S469)For lovers of the TV show,Downton Abbey sometimes feltlike a small world of its own, cocooned inside the majesticwalls of the mansion and set apart from therest of the planet. The exception to this wasthe incursion of World War I into the lives of the Crawleys. But the Crawley family was formedand influenced as much by the history andcultural context of England in the late 19th andearly 20th centuries as it was by the money andaristocracy which isolated it socially. In this classwe will explore the historical events and culturalatmosphere which are the setting for Julian Fellowes’ award-winning drama. We will learnabout the rise and fall of the English aristocracy, the politics and wars and social progress whichmolded this time period, and the music, theatre, literature and art which gilded the civilization inwhich the Crawleys lived. Do a deep dive intothe culture which formed the Crawley family, and enjoy the music, art and literature of theperiod.

The World Surrounding “OUTLANDER”(C/S473)For lovers of the books and TV show “Outlander” is as much a leap through time as it isfor Clare Beauchamp. We aretransplanted into a world asforeign to us as it was to a war nurse from the1940s. It is a world of alien rituals and traditions,of primitive sanitation and medicine, of odd-sounding language and music, of politics andalliances that are confusing and daunting. Inthis class, we will explore the historical eventsand cultural atmosphere which are the settingfor Diana Gabaldon’s award-winning drama. We will learn about the Jacobite uprising whichcolors the initial years of the plot, the religionand superstitions of the times, and the Scottishclans and culture which surround Clare in her new century. The music, art, and literature of18th century Scotland, England and France will

inform our understanding of Jamie and Clare’schallenges. Then we will move on to Americabefore the Revolution, and explore how the situation in the Colonies affected the Frasers in their search for safety and peace. Politics, wars, culture, history, economy – these formthe structure for the story of “Outlander”, andto understand them is to understand the sagaof Clare Beauchamp. Do a deep dive into theculture surrounding “Outlander”, and enjoy themusic, art and literature of the period. Students should bring a packed lunch.

English Tudor Dynasty History:The Six Wives of Henry VIII (C/S038)“Divorced, beheaded died, divorced beheaded, survived.” With this little mnemonic, Englishschool children learn to differentiate between the 6 wives of this notorious monarch – but these descriptions are hardly comprehensive. In this class we will take “a wife a week” and explore who these women were, who the realHenry VIII was, and how each of them alteredthe course of English history. Each in her ownway was a tragic figure; some pursued theirfates with open eyes, some fell into the historybooks against their wills. From the Spanishmatrimonial pawn Catherine of Aragon to theworldly-wise Katherine Parr, these women are the focus of the royal Tudor saga which hasintrigued the world for centuries. Was theretruth behind the adultery claims that doomedAnne Boleyn? Why was Anne of Cleves such a critical tool for the security of the realm? Wasthe seemingly innocent Katherine Howard trulyso inexperienced? How did Katherine Parralmost end up on the block? What killed JaneSeymour? Why was Catherine of Aragon so beloved by the people? Did Henry actually loveany of these women – and did any of them lovehim? We will sample the fashions, music andliterature of this colorful and compelling era.
