The National Mathematics and Science College is different, both in what it does and how it does it. It is the first UK college to be dedicated to STEM subjects, and the first to focus on preparing students solely for the

Dr Martin Stephen, NMSC Founding President is the former High Master of St Paul’s (London), Manchester Grammar School and The Perse School (Cambridge). Emeritus Lecturer at the University of Manchester (2001- 2004); and in 2004 became the Chairman of HMC - the organisation that represents Eton, Harrow, Westminster and all the leading public schools. As well as being an Associate Member of The Room, Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge (1987–1994), Dr Stephen is author of 24 books including his latest co-publication “Educating the More Able Student - What Works and Why”.

About the National Mathematics and Science College

Our Mission

The National Mathematics and Science College (NMSC) is

a co-educational establishment dedicated to providing a

world-class education in STEM subjects (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics) to students aged fifteen

to nineteen who wish to gain places at the world’s leading

universities – Oxford, Cambridge, Top Russell Group Universities

in the UK, and Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton and other leading

colleges in the USA.

Why do we focus on the STEM subjects?

Students who study STEM subjects at A level are equipping

themselves with extremely valuable qualifications in areas

of knowledge in great demand in employment and in

Higher Education.

NMSC students are, in addition, aiming to achieve the highest

grades at A level and will therefore be in a tremendously

strong position to obtain a place at one of the world’s leading

universities.

However, STEM subjects are not merely academically rigorous,

STEM subjects equip students with powerful transferable skills

such as critical thinking, problem solving and team working. STEM

A levels followed by a STEM degree allow the young person the

opportunity to enter the most creative, innovative, financially

lucrative and personally rewarding occupations after university.

Occupations such as medicine, the law and business and

finance view STEM degrees as particularly important. Moreover,

the creative industries, architecture, design and advanced

manufacturing see STEM degrees as a tremendous preparation

for future employment in these areas.

Coventry fact: The National Automotive Innovation Centre at Warwick University is a 150 million pound investment between Jaguar Tata and WMG which will provide a critical mass of innovation and technology development.

Simon Haines Senior Teacher – Head of Maths After graduating from the University of Edinburgh with First Class Honours in Pure Mathematics, Simon won a scholarship with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications to study teaching at the University of Oxford, obtaining a PGCE Mathematics with distinction. Since then he has prepared young mathematicians for GCSEs, A Levels and beyond with outstanding results.

A gifted and creative mathematician, his Masters dissertation focused on the relationship between group theory and musical rhythm. He won the James Murray Brown Scholarship from the University of Edinburgh to conduct research in stochastic differential equations and has contributed to research papers in computational linguistics. Simon also has a passion for computer programming, runs the College’s Coding Society and frequently competes in online coding challenges.

Antonia Giovanazzi Principal With more than 25 years of teaching and leadership experience in a wide range of sectors and age groups, Antonia has a proven track record in the development and

successful implementation of innovative learning and teaching practices and change management in schools and colleges.

Throughout her career, Antonia has been actively involved in research into learning methodologies and has been instrumental in designing, creating and delivering insightful professional development to meet the individual and collective needs of teachers and school and college communities.

Her passion for encouraging and inspiring curiosity, independent thinking and self-reflection in both students and teachers had led her to undertake extensive action research projects and collaborate widely with colleagues across the globe.

A Master of Arts graduate of Edinburgh University, she subsequently completed her PGCE at St Andrew’s College of Education. Antonia has worked nationally and internationally; in the UAE, the USA, as well as in France and Italy.

Leadership Team

Dr Penelope Robotham Senior Teacher – Head of Chemistry After gaining a First Class Honours degree in Chemistry from the University of Wales, Penny graduated from Durham University with a PhD in Inorganic Polymer Chemistry. After two postdoctoral posts at Durham and Manchester Universities, she taught in an international school and was a highly successful Head of Science for over 12 years at one of the top grammar schools in the UK.

Penny is the only teacher in the country to have won the prestigious Roegentium Award every year since its inception. She was a lead practitioner for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust specialising in science practical experiments. Penny is an examiner for AQA and Edexcel exam boards and former chair of the Royal Society of Chemistry UK Olympiad Working Party, selecting and training the UK team for the International Chemistry Olympiad.

NMSC provides teachers of distinction with detailed knowledge of the world’s leading universities and their entrance requirements. All teachers have 1st class or high 2.1 degrees from Oxbridge and top Russell Group universities. Details of our teaching staff are available on the website.

Our programmes of study

The A level Programme

This is a 2 year programme, aimed at 16-19 year olds to

provide them with the qualifications to gain entry to a world-class

university and the skills to succeed in their degree.

The A Level Programme comprises:

• Outstanding tuition in Mathematics A level and up to three other

A level subjects selected from Further Mathematics, Chemistry,

Physics, Biology, Computer Science and Economics;

• Encouragement and support to enter national, international

and olympiad competitions in all the academic subjects;

• The Extended Project Qualification;

• The IELTS programme focused on achieving level 7.5 or above;

• Full participation in the Enrichment Programme (See Section 4).

The Pre-A level Certificate Programme

This is an intensive and bespoke preparation year to enable

students to embark on courses in science and mathematics,

equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel at A level.

Through this programme, students attain a higher level of

knowledge and understanding than that normally attained

by the traditional two year GCSE route. The Pre-A level

programme is designed to prepare students for the A level

STEM programme and comprises:

• Outstanding tuition in Further Mathematics, Computer

Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. English Language and

Business Studies.

• Qualifications include GCSE Further Mathematics and GCSE

Computer Science, School Diploma Certificates in Biology,

Chemistry, Physics and Business Studies; and PET or

IGCSE English.

• Encouragement and support to enter national and international

and olympiad competitions in all the academic subjects;

• Participation in the Enrichment Programme (See Section 4).

The One Year A level Fast Track

Our intensive one-year course is designed for students who

have demonstrable ability to fast -track their studies and

achieve grades A*- A in A level exams in one year.

Entry requirements:

Academic skills and content knowledge in Mathematics and

Science, equivalent to Year 1 of A level (or equivalent country

certification, IB, HKDSE) and IELTS 6.5.

Developing competence in English

A strong focus on developing, in the English language, the skills

of reading, writing, speaking and listening is a major theme

running through all the academic work at NMSC.

Students whose first language is not English must achieve a

level equivalent to IELTS 5.0 to be accepted on the two year

A level programme. The NMSC language programme has

been developed in-house and is delivered by British Council

accredited teachers to develop and strengthen every student’s

English language proficiency in order to exceed university IELTS

requirements which are typically 7.5.

New ways of learning

At NMSC our young people will achieve the highest A level

grades. However, they will also learn how to prepare for

successful academic life in the world’s leading universities.

Our students will develop their learning habits in the

following ways:

Independent learning

The outstanding quality of teaching our young people experience

is the foundation of our students’ success. Our students acquire

knowledge by their own efforts and develop the ability for

enquiry and critical evaluation. This is supported by a wealth of

resources and technology for individual research.

Collaborative learning

Our students work together to search for understanding,

meaning, or solutions to problems by sharing ideas. The layout

of our learning spaces are flexible and carefully planned to

enable this to take place. To be a diligent, hardworking and high

achieving student, independent learning is vital but to be a

student ready for life at one of the world’s leading universities

this is not enough. Students in these universities need to

share ideas, develop the ideas of others, positively critique

each other’s work and be able to accept the criticism of fellow

students. At NMSC we encourage our students to work in teams

to solve problems. We specifically do this in the Breakout Areas

around which the teaching rooms are grouped.

Research focused learning

At the world’s elite universities research is an essential mode

of learning. All NMSC students are set weekly research tasks.

This work will be either completed on an individual basis or in

small groups working collaboratively. All NMSC students may

undertake individual research for submission for the Extended

Project Qualification (see Section 2.4). This is ideal preparation

for academic life in the world’s elite universities.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) At NMSC, we offer the EQP to students as appropriate.

• The EPQ requires a student to select and carry out a research project, to produce either a 5,000 word report or a ‘product’ supported by a 1,000 word report on which the student will be interviewed. The student is assessed throughout the process as well as on the final report or product.

• The EPQ requires initiative and develops self-reliance and research skills.

• Increasingly, the top universities regard the EPQ very highly and consider that the qualities it develops in students are essential for the successful completion of their university education and for life.

The EPQ programme is supervised by NMSC’s teachers who are leaders in their field of STEM education with support from outstanding local universities’ postgraduate students. NMSC’s comprehensive EPQ programme offers students the opportunity to apply their research skills to a wide array of interests and topics.

Medical School Pathway NMSC’s medical school pathway is led by a team of eminent medical consultants from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust; who work closely with our teaching staff to ensure our aspiring medical students are afforded the very best preparation:

NMSC’s medical school pathway provides: • A cycle of three introductory lectures is delivered by one

of our Medical Expert Consultants

• Hospital visits and guaranteed work placements – locally and in London

• Medical ethics - A series of discussions led by one of our Medical Expert Consultants

• Medical Expert Consultants Mentoring – Group mentoring in first year and 1:1 mentoring in second year

• BMAT and UCAT preparation and practice run by Warwick Medical School

• Interview preparation– workshops and mock interviews run by Warwick Medical School

• Reading guidance and use of The Medic Portal, (founded by doctors in conjunction with Royal Society of Medicine for aspiring young medics)

• Extended Project Qualification – mentoring provided for those wishing to undertake an EPQ in a medically related area.

Enrichment Excellence

Creativity is inherent in the sciences. Students are encouraged to express themselves through visual arts, music, writing and theatre. A Steinway grand piano is located in the main reception area and art materials are available in the art room.

Accomplished musicians are welcome to participate in the Sparks Programme, run by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; and singers are invited to participate in local choirs in Coventry.

Coventry fact: The Belgrade Theatre was Britain’s first purpose-built civic theatre. It opened in 1958.

Excellence in Enrichment

At NMSC we believe that it is not enough to achieve the highest

grades at A level and to achieve an IELTS score of at least 7.5.

All NMSC students follow a rich and varied programme

of Enrichment which encompasses:

The NMSC Leadership Programmme is designed to develop the

presentation, interview and debating skills that our future young

leaders will need as they embark on their careers.

Personally supervised by a Member of Parliament, students are

challenged to engage with key political questions of our time.

On the Parliamentor Programme students will:

• See politics in action – Gain a unique insight into the political

process while being mentored by Members of Parliament

(MPs) and Peers.

Excellence in Enrichment

Visit to Supreme Court

Debating the 2019 Law on Organ Donation

• Develop leadership skills – Learn through direct experience,

expert-led training workshops including the Parliamentary

Education Service and events.

• Be encouraged to work in mixed-belief teams to create social

action projects - students are encouraged to collaborate with

other young people from around the world to create real

social change.

• Engage in debating competitions against other schools.

Belgrade Theatre Presentation Skills Course Through a bespoke programme, designed exclusively for

NMSC, our young students master important skills in

self presentation and learn confidence-building techniques

essential for all aspects of adult life.

The Presentation Skills Course is exclusively designed and

run by The Belgrade Theatre Company which has pioneered

educational workshops for the last 50 years, delivering to young

adults life-long theatre skills that are transferable to real-life

contexts, and helping to build confident and articulate young

citizens.

Music and Art

Creativity is inherent in the sciences, and the greatest scientific

minds in history have found inspiration and pleasure in the arts.

At NMSC students can enjoy the freedom to express themselves

through the visual arts, music, writing, theatre, and much more.

Olympiads

NMSC has per capita more success in Olympiads than

any other UK school we know of.

Below are some of our highlights:

• Year on year, NMSC students consistently rank in global top

4% of schools competing in the prestigious International Euclid

Mathematics Contest.

• Top performing UK school in the international Physics

Olympiad “Physics Bowl” (2019).

• Consistent success in Hypatia and Fermat international

contests.

• 23 Gold Medals were awarded in the 2019 National Royal

Society of Chemistry Olympiad, awarded to only

top 8% of entries

• Selection for UK national team in 2019 International

Chemistry Olympiad.

Sport and Fitness

Participating in sporting activities is a great way to stay healthy

and take a break from studying. All students have access to first

class sports facilities.

There are on site gym facilities for boarders who are 18 years of

age and above at our Hall of Residence. For younger students,

membership is available at a fully equipped gym a few minutes

walk from the Residence.

Weekly sport lessons, as part of the curriculum, encourage

students to participate in a full sport programme including: football,

basketball, table tennis, hockey, rugby etc

Also, sporting activities and competitions are held in conjunction

with local schools. By participating in this way - with English

students in an English school setting - students build their

linguistic confidence, cultural awareness and understanding.

STEM Visits, Trips and Activities

NMSC students participate in an exciting range of STEM visits

and activities including:

Leisure time at weekends can be spent at Coventry’s ice skating

arena, water park and cinema, as well as exploring Warwickshire’s

rich history and enjoying its markets, shops and cafes.

• Industry visits including a visit to Jaguar Land Rover factory

• Warwick University Festival of Science• Trips including The Escape Room and Bletchley Park

• Supervised visits to Cambridge, Oxford and other leading universities

• Lectures including Birmingham Physics Lecture and the Royal Institution televised Christmas lectures

• Visiting speakers from industry, space exploration, academia and Oxford University’s debating society (Oxford Union)

Our holistic approach to Pastoral care is an integral part to our college. Students can choose from NMSC’s Hall of Residence or Homestay, available with local families who have been carefully selected.

Excellence in Pastoral Care

Homestay and Hall of Residence

Coventry is a vibrant university town, with high quality cafés,

shops, cinemas, a theatre and the world-famous Cathedral,

all within walking distance of each other.

NMSC’s Homestay is with families that have been carefully

selected and their homes visited by Sutherland Guardianship,

a family business founded in 1965 by Mrs Betty Sutherland in

their own family home – Batemans – previously the residence

of the esteemed writer Rudyard Kipling. Students living with

our families are safe and secure:

• Overseen by Aegis – The Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students

• Police checked and references taken

• Wonderful homes and a strong caring family environment

• Students matched to suitable families

• Full immersion experience in English language and culture

• Accelerates language development

• Daily transport is provided between school and family

The NMSC’s Hall of Residence provides accommodation that

is secure and comfortable, right in the heart of Coventry.

• All bedrooms are equipped with an ensuite shower room, WiFi, study desk, wardrobes and under bed storage.

• Our cheerful Residence Wardens provide 24/7 support and security for our students

• Bed linen and towels are changed weekly

• Large fully equipped communal kitchens provide additional cooking facilities, plasma tv and comfortable seating for socialising

• Daily transport is provided between school and Residence

3.2. Caring for the Health of Our Students

All NMSC students are registered with a local doctor, a General

Practitioner who is usually the first contact with the British NHS

(National Health Service). All students are also registered with

a local dentist. The local NHS hospital is the “University Hospital”

in Coventry and detailed information about this hospital can

be found at www.uhcw.nhs.uk.

Reporting to Parents

Parents will receive four formal written reports per year

including a settling in report, within the first few weeks of the

first term. Parents will also be kept informed of the progress

of their child’s UCAS and/or Common Application for university.

Parents are welcome to contact their child’s Personal Tutor at

any point in the term for information on their child’s academic

progress and well-being.

Food and nutrition

We understand the importance of a balanced diet and

good nutrition for the health and wellbeing of our students.

We provide a generous range of hot and cold options,

including a vegetarian alternative, variety of vegetables, full

salad bar at lunchtime, desserts, and a selection of fresh fruit

is available through out the day. Students with food allergies

and intolerances are catered for, and regular student feedback

ensures the menus suit our multi-national student body.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served every day including

weekends and is included in the fees.

John Forbes Nash Jr. was an American mathematician who made fundamental contributions to game theory, differential geometry, and the study of partial differential equations. Nash’s work has provided insight into the factors that govern chance and decision-making inside complex systems found in everyday life.
