from the executive office

Over the past year we have taken the opportunity to recognize and celebrate MIL’s 35-year anniversary because we know how hard each of you have worked to reach this accomplishment. Not to be taken lightly, this milestone is a major success in our industry as mid-sized government contractors often disappear, either going out of business or through acquisition. Similarly

sized competitors struggle to win contracts given the amount of work set-aside for small businesses and the greater resources most large businesses have at their disposal. Despite this, MIL remains a stable and growing company.

To maintain this momentum, MIL recently held an off-site for MIL VPs and Service Center leadership. Led by Corporate Business Development (CBD) EVP Marisa Daley, the agenda covered topics such as growth opportunities, expansion of MIL services, and staff development. The stated outcome of the session included identification of specific actions to ensure MIL continues to meet targeted goals over the next five years.

Marisa Daley recently discussed the success of the event, “Following this meeting, MIL’s executive leadership created a common understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face in maximizing our growth potential as a firm.”

Immersive and innovative gatherings of this nature are paramount to MIL’s current and future success and we will continue to work together to ensure MIL remains an industry leader. As we prepare to move into our next decade of business and beyond, we intend to use such gatherings to push our business strategy and development into new horizons. A huge thanks to all our employees, who are the base of what makes this company a great success.

Sustaining MIL’s Quality Management SystemBy Katie VigneronIn August 2015, MIL’s Southeast Regional office successfully passed an audit to maintain its International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 certification. MIL’s ISO certification focuses on fulfilling client contractor positions with quality people in a timely manner. The MIL Support Team (MST) has worked hard to make this happen over the last three years by continually improving processes based on customer feedback, by analyzing monthly key metrics, and by identifying potential issues in their everyday work. Living and breathing the program each day has brought light to the many benefits a Quality Management System can provide.

The MST considers both our clients at the Department of State and MIL’s internal hiring managers as their customers, and their satisfaction is important to the program’s success. Through the annual customer survey, the team has gained valuable insight into the customer’s perception of the services they provide. Each survey response and comment is closely reviewed and discussed to determine if a process change is needed.

Updating the key metrics was a top priority for the team in 2015. The result is a new report that breaks down the hiring process into segments for each team they support. MST can now pinpoint issues in their processes for each position they fill, enabling them to consistently meet their top priority: quickly filling vacant positions with quality people.

Looking ahead to 2016, the team plans to focus on issues that can delay a candidate’s on-boarding, including declined or rescinded offers, and positions with hard-to-fill requirements. By better understanding the circumstances surrounding these issues, MST is hoping to identify indicators that could help the team avoid them. A second focus for 2016 will be updating the QMS procedures to remain in compliance with the 2015 version of the ISO 9001 Standard. The team expects the new standard to focus on mitigating risk. MST is excited for the challenges ahead and proud to contribute to MIL’s sustained high quality standards.

Business Systems Universe – A Whole New WorldBy Meredith ShortEvery time a system is modified, the downstream and cross-stream effects can be extremely far-reaching. Risk is introduced not just to that system, but to every system it touches. And, with the Global Financial Architecture Framework (GFAF) currently maintaining over two dozen interconnected systems, an interactive, real-time map is the only way to monitor these changes and ensure risk is mitigated to near zero.

After many years in design and development, this map is now a reality. The Global Financial Architecture Administration (GFAA) has just released the Business Systems Universe, a comprehensive graphical representation of every system maintained by GFAF. Users now have access to a “universal view,” illustrating a high-level map of all systems and their various connections, as well as to a “system view” of each, providing a more detailed view of every system under GFAF’s purview.

If you have questions or comments regarding the Business Systems Universe, please direct them to GFAA at [email protected].

This revolutionary new tool is accessible to all OpenNet and DevNet users and provides the following benefits:• Risk mitigation – Risk involved with system

modifications is minimized• Universal and detailed views – Both intra-system

and cross-system impacts on work performed during the system’s project and product lifecycle are easily visible

• Up-to-date data – Data is updated in real-time, providing users an accurate snapshot of systems and their relationships, which allows for more informed data calls

• Viewable and printable displays – The web-based interface is easy to navigate, and screens are simple to print for daily, off-line reference

Dave Larson—Headed for Semi-RetirementBy Melissa PriceOur dear friend and beloved colleague, Dave Larson, is headed for “semi-retirement.” We all recognize Dave for his unconditional dedication and commitment to our employees, customers, and the war fighting end-users of the many systems he has helped to develop over the years. Luckily, since he is only semi-retiring, we will still reap the benefits of his dedication, technical prowess, and wealth of experience. We’ll just have to do that between rounds of golf and his wife Mary’s honey-do list!

In honor of this memorable occasion, MIL held a semi-retirement party on Wednesday, September 9th, at The Rex in Leonardtown. The informal, happy hour styled event included Dave’s friends, family, and associates, a few cheers, and a little roasting of our dear friend Dave. Thanks to everyone that attended!

EVP, Dave Larson is presented his retirement gifts from President & CEO, Butch Long.

35th Anniversary Summer Awards Celebration & Crab FeastBy Cameron StocktonDespite Mother Nature’s intrusions of torrential rain on our festive 35th Anniversary Summer Awards Celebration and Crab Feast on September 12th, the cool weather and crab picking revelries were still a huge victory and provided a memorable occasion for all in attendance!

As in years past, the gathering invites employees and their families to enjoy some fun in the “sun” and recognize the achievements of the DC-MD-VA groups throughout the year. The event was held at Mayo Beach Park in Edgewater, MD., where nearly 300 guests attended and were able to enjoy a day filled with crab picking, all you can eat BBQ, kid-friendly activities (moon bounce, face painting, boating, and rock wall climbing). Everyone enjoyed music from the gifted band, DC Fusion, as they mingled, ate, and strolled around the park grounds when the weather permitted. To celebrate MIL’s 35 year anniversary of becoming a prospering business, the park grounds were jovially decorated with banners and balloons to promote the company’s longevity and new branding campaign.

After everyone had some time to enjoy ample crabs and BBQ, VP of Corporate Business Development, Marisa Daley, provided a corporate address providing strategic plans and current initiatives that MIL is undergoing. Then, VP of Administration and Managing Director, Jim Sullivan and President and CEO, Butch Long, honored Employees of the Month from the past year with personalized addresses and awards.

Employees of the Month honored during the ceremony include: Kevin DeHaven, John Abella, Sonya Davis, Christopher George, Coretta Griffin, Warren Vietoris, Todd Pilesky, Erin Barrow, and Lavon Harper

Last but certainly not least, MIL’s 35th Anniversary Summer Awards Celebration and Crab Feast wouldn’t be complete without some friendly competition. Our Annual Kickball Tournament has become somewhat of a tradition at the Crab Feast. The tournament pitted the 2012-2014 Kickball Champions of the C4IS group against the Bowie Service Center group. Miraculously, the Bowie Service Center team emerged victorious on the rain soaked kickball pitch and left the park with the coveted “MIL Kickball Cup”. The final score was 12-8. Additionally, Parker and Eric Jones (guests of the Proposals and Marketing Manager, Rhonda Cadogan) won four consecutive corn hole games to take the championship and were crowned “MIL Corn hole Cup Tournament Champions 2015”. The Bowie Service Center’s employees really cleaned up this year!

Congrats to the Bowie Service Center on their win and a big thank you to everyone who made it out!

Take Us Out to the BallgameBy Meredith ShortThere are few more quintessentially summer sights, sounds, and smells than those you’ll find at the ballpark. The weekend before school started, bringing summer to a screeching halt, the heat finally broke for a breezy night out at Joe Riley Stadium where the MIL Charleston team cheered on their Riverdogs against the mighty Sand Gnats of Savannah.

MIL families enjoyed not only a very close game, but dinner, face painting, cotton candy, fireworks, and a seventh inning stretch challenge of first-graders racing the length of the field on inflatable horses. Employees agreed that the event could only have been topped if MIL management had raced in the kids’ stead.

MIL VP, Peg Kendra, said, “What a night! It’s so great to see so many of our employees and their families enjoying each other’s

MIL team members Jamie Sapp, Audrey Vance, Emily McCauley, Kyle MacQueston, Lane Huntley, accompanied by friends and family

company outside the office. We work hard throughout the year and love being able to get to know our colleagues in this type of fun environment.” When asked if introducing face painting into more office processes was on the horizon, Kendra made a note in her planner and promised to consider it carefully.

Ultimately, those pesky Sand Gnats beat our beloved Riverdogs, but MIL employees agreed that this year’s summer party was a home run.

conferences

MIL Attends the Dreamforce ConferenceMIL has recently added Salesforce to its existing customer relationship management (CRM) capabilities. CRM is a strategy for managing customer relationships and interactions. MIL supports the Library of Congress’ Microsoft CRM and will soon implement Salesforce CRM solutions for the International Trade Administration (ITA) at the Department of Commerce.

To ensure that MIL is on the cusp of Salesforce innovation, four members of the MIL ITS sector attended the recent Dreamforce Conference in San Francisco, CA: EVP Vin Seibert, AVP Carter Raines, Team Lead Paul Walczak, and Salesforce Senior Systems Architect John Harlow. This team embarked on the four- day

conference mindful of various goals of the conference, which include: to bring together 170,000 thought leaders, industry pioneers, and thousands of peers for a week of idea sharing.

John Harlow is new to MIL and comes to us from Salesforce, where he was in charge of all retail and wholesale national sales divisions.

Paul Walzcak, Vin Seibert, Carter Raines, and John Harlow

While there, they were able to choose from thousands of sessions, hundreds of demonstrations, and several keynote speeches. They benefitted from the entire community of Salesforce product experts who were on hand to share best practices, hands-on training, and new innovations. They also had the chance to problem solve with Salesforce employees and 400+ partners showcasing over a thousand integrated solutions.

John Harlow praised the conference as a strategic opportunity, “The chance to interface with industry leaders along with the practical, educational, and networking opportunities available at Dreamforce allow MIL to stay well-informed of evolving Salesforce technologies and procedures in order to bring the best service possible to our clients”.

MIL Attends 2015 Association of Government Accountants ConferenceMIL was a proud sponsor and exhibitor at the 2015 AGA PDT Conference in Nashville, Tenn. this past July. “Innovate. Transform. Achieve.” was the title of this years’ event, which sought to bring together top financial management professionals in federal, state, and local government, as well as academia and private sectors. The MIL team attended to take part in educational sessions and networking events, while members of the Proposals and Marketing team manned the booth, educating potential clients and current partners on our service offerings. MIL once again hosted a successful networking event, which brings together hundreds of attendees every year.

“I always look forward to attending AGA,” said Executive Vice President John Hinkson. “In addition to the sessions, It offers a great opportunity to reconnect with potential business partners and gain valuable new contacts.”

By Melissa PriceOnce again, MIL has served as a corporate sponsor of the AGA’s Washington DC Chapter. MIL’s contributions have helped AGA’s DC Chapter to enjoy another successful program year. Because of corporate sponsorship, AGA’s DC Chapter is able to remain a leader in providing quality services to the financial management community. In fact, MIL’s own Executive Vice President Lloyd Farmer serves as the Corporate Sponsorship Director of the AGA Washington, DC Chapter.

Achievements are realized in:• Education and Professional Development – The AGA

DC Chapter offers a suite of educational and professional training opportunities. These include highly successful luncheon meetings that feature distinguished experts on current financial management and accountability issues and requirements. AGA also provides 16 hours of training at the Ronald Reagan Building during their annual training conference and Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) training, featuring a six-day CGFM training class.

• Early Careers – The AGA DC Chapter encourages the next generation of leaders by hosting monthly activities to enable Early Career professionals to meet and learn from some of the most influential individuals in government and to establish relationships with their peers.

• Social Events and Networking Opportunities – The AGA DC Chapter provides members with a wide array of social activities throughout the year that provide an entertaining environment for meeting other members and sharing ideas and experiences.

• Community Service – The AGA DC Chapter affords its members the opportunity to share their gifts and talents with the DC community by conducting a community service event in each month of the program year. Programs include supporting the Marines’ Toys for Tots program, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and numerous other community services programs.

The AGA DC Chapter also conducts several initiatives to increase and engage their membership throughout the year, including recognizing new members and members who have demonstrated sustained commitment to the Chapter. MIL continues to support AGA’s commitment to being leaders in the Washington DC Area in providing high quality programs and services to its members.

Back to School Daze DriveDuring the month of August, MIL partnered with the Walk the Walk Foundation to support their Annual School Supplies Drive. Walk the Walk Foundation is a Maryland based non-profit organization with a mission to make a difference through community giving and outreach. The foundation partners with Anne Arundel County’s Back to School Program, which supports its local elementary schools. The Bowie Service Center collectively donated over 100 school supplies for the Walk the Walk Foundation, including paper, folders, pencils, notebooks and other necessities for the students. Thank you to everyone in the Service Center who donated to the drive as your donations will make school a better place for the Anne Arundel County students as well as teachers. MIL’s support made a profound impact on students and their learning experience!

Rick Janer:Making All the Right MovesBy Marty BaileyRick Janer has been a valuable member of MIL since 2011, providing support to the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) Developmental Test and Evaluation (DT&E). In a recent letter from Principal Deputy Director, Dr. J. Brian Hall, Rick was commended for leading the effort to move from the Nash building in Arlington, Virginia to the new Mark Center suite in Alexandria. An excerpt from the letter reads:

In leading this effort you were required to coordinate across multiple agencies, building supervisors, moving contractors, security personnel, and other government agencies. You were unflappable during this process. When faced with delays and gaps in the required information, you routinely found solutions while keeping the organization’s members and leadership informed. Further, your attention to detail ensured the successful transfer of classified information, office records, vital office and computer equipment without loss or damage.

As I am grateful for your consistent excellent support to the DT&E staff, I am particularly appreciative of your efforts completing this move. Your unfailing efforts supporting the Deputy Directors and staff are instrumental in our continued success.

Congratulations, Rick, on a job well done!!

2015 Influencing the Future WorkforceLaTonya Morgan, MIL’s Site Manager at the International Trade Administration (ITA), recently spoke to students of the H.O.P.E. Project on the topic of personal development and achievement. Referencing the philosophies of prominent motivational speakers like Jim Rohn, Eric Thomas, and Les Brown, LaTonya discussed their views on self-actualization and betterment. “I got more than I bargained for,” said one student in attendance.

LaTonya’s impromptu presentation followed a recent interviewing session at the H.O.P.E. Project Training Center in Southeast D.C. LaTonya and help desk support team lead and H.O.P.E. graduate, Sonya Davis, visited the center to interview several recent program graduates as candidates for tier 1 analyst positions on the ITA project.

The H.O.P.E. Project is an information technology (IT) training program with a mission to provide technical training and professional development for students between the ages of 17 and 35. Since the H.O.P.E. Project’s IT training program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions as help desk and application support professionals, it’s a natural fit as a source of energetic and trained prospective staff for MIL’s work at ITA and elsewhere.

In addition to her roles as site manager, interviewer, and extemporaneous motivational speaker, LaTonya also serves as the Vice President in charge of Program Planning for the local Capital Area Chapter of the Help

Desk Institute.

August 2015: Lavon HarperLavon Harper joined MIL in 2000 as a Financial Analyst at the Department of State (DoS). When he began, Lavon worked with a DoS team handling Fund Balance With Treasury (FBWT). During his time here, Lavon has been assigned to several different bureaus at the DoS, including: Resource Management, Diplomatic Security, and Educational and Cultural Affairs. Throughout all of his assignments, Lavon has proved to be a very reliable and excellent performer.

Currently, Lavon is assigned to the Accounting Services project at the General Services Administration (GSA). Lavon’s professionalism and cooperative spirit have landed him much praise from his associates and managers at the agency. Consequently, he has been commended numerous times for his work within the customer service group where he performs tasks to support the weekly and monthly reporting of the help desk statistics. “Regardless of the level of urgency or intensity of a task, Lavon demonstrates a consistent level of professionalism to ensure that the client always receives a quality product,” said his supervisor, Bonita Jones.

September 2015: Belinda KearseBelinda Kearse joined MIL in 2005 as a Financial Analyst at the Department of State (DoS), Office of the Comptroller and Global Financial Services (CGFS) in Rosslyn, VA. Initially, Belinda provided support across the organization for a variety of roles but eventually was noticed for her skill and expertise in managing accounts payable reports. This led to her role as an Automated Disbursements Analyst and today, in addition to other responsibilities, Belinda serves as the Automated

Disbursements Lead on her team.

In the past year, the Automated Disbursements team has had to navigate the complex changes impacting the way government agencies submit disbursements to Treasury and simultaneously established a new automated solution for loading large volumes of Passport Fee Refund payments to customers of the Passport Centers throughout the country.

While these changes brought significant challenges for this very high profile piece of work in the organization, it was rarely a problem for the group. Belinda’s ability to handle these complex challenges in timely manner through high-quality analysis certainly supported her team in a big way. Belinda is able to successfully manage this effort due to her years of experience with Automated Disbursements, as well as the strong relationships she has developed with the claims organization at DoS from the analysts to the executives.

September 2015: April Knight April Knight joined MIL in 2012 as a Financial Analyst at the Department of State (DoS), Office of the Comptroller and Global Financial Services (CGFS) in Rosslyn, Va. April brought with her years of experience in DoS financial management and the Global Financial Management System (GFMS). Since joining the MIL team in Rosslyn, April has had a role in working on and improving many key areas of the business including accounting model maintenance, interface processing, the

monthly report verification, and travel services support.

In the past year, April has been a part of the two person team that has managed the receivables, payables and disbursements for GFMS. This most recent role has been challenging in the past year. She has had to navigate the complex changes impacting the way government agencies submit disbursements to Treasury. April has had to simultaneously establish a new automated solution for loading large volumes of Passport Fee Refund payments to customers of the Passport Centers throughout the country.

April has become the victim of the age-old adage, “If you do your job well, you will be rewarded by being asked to do more.” April not only performs her tasks with excellence, she maintains the highest levels of professionalism under all circumstances. In an organization that can be tumultuous due the changing demands of the business, April is consistent in her dedication, reliability and poise.
