Pentecost Sunday May 19, 2013
Services at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Pentecost Sunday is one of the seven principal Feast Days of the Church Year. It marks the day on which the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ disciples to empower them to take the Good News of Christ into the world. This day is sometimes referred to as
“The Birthday of the Church.” Another name for Pentecost Sunday is “Whitsunday”, a reference to the white garments people once wore on this day. In our modern calendar, we use red for Pentecost Sunday, and many people wear something red to church in celebration of this feast day. As with all major feast days, like Christmas and Easter, all Christians are urged to be here for this celebration. Also on this Sunday at the 10:30 service, the children taking part in the Acolytes, Christian Education, Junior Choir and Junior Handbells will be honored for their achievements. Steve Parker, Tom Hay, Beth Richardson and Dee Johnston have done wonderful jobs leading these programs that have involved more than sixty children. A potluck luncheon on the grounds after the 10:30 service is in the planning stages. Watch for more information in the Sunday bulletins, in e-mails or a special mailing. The Youth Group will oversee games they have planned for the children, including the use of the Bounce House.
Interim Rector Away at Bishop’s Conference Monday – Wednesday, May 6th-8th, Ted and Anita will be at Shrine Mont attending the Bishop’s conference for Clergy, Spouses and Lay Professionals. Afterwards they will travel to Cincinnati for family business, returning for services May 12th. During that time, if a pastoral need arises, please call Breck Montague, our Senior Warden at 693-3042 or 757-220-5129.

A Prayer for Our Search Committee Almighty and ever living God, from whom comes every good and perfect gift; we beseech thee to look with favor upon Ware Episcopal Church in its search for a new Rector. So guide the members of the Search Committee that they shall find a good and faithful Rector who will enrich our lives and help us to accomplish our ministries.

Dear Friends in Christ, Holy Week and Easter Day are now behind us. Although attendance at our worship services this year was down somewhat, many people still took advantage of these events from Palm
Sunday through Easter Day to see the sacrifice of Christ and how his promise of resurrection became a reality. This year we also experienced a Baptism on Easter Sunday, bringing into Christ’s One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church a new Christian. Many people also participated in our worship services to make them run smoothly and efficiently. If it were not for their participation, our Holy Week and Easter Day worship services would not have been as moving and meaningful as they were to many people. We give hearty thanks to the Choir, Acolytes, Chalicers, Chancel Guild, those who arranged flowers and Coffee Hours, and many others who put in longer-than-usual hours to make our celebrations meaningful and joyful.
What if we did not have dedicated choir members, acolytes, lay ministers, ushers and others who spend extra time and effort to make sure the special holy day observances of our Church run so smoothly? For that matter, what if we did not have dedicated Sunday School teachers, those who provide hospitality, adults and young people and others who help our programs continue to thrive?
The truth is, a parish will live or die, be successful or fail, be a beacon of Christ’s light to the world or a self-absorbed club, based on the time, talent and commitment shared – or not shared – by its members. This is the part of stewardship that we don’t always emphasize, but which is critical. Certainly, the parish needs strong financial support each year. Like any family, the local parish needs to pay its bills and provide worship space, heat, air conditioning, repairs and routine cleaning, and so on. Without commitment of resources (the tithe, 10% of your income is the standard asking), parishes close their doors and people wonder, “Where did my church go?” The same is equally true for time and talent.
Some people only come to Church on special occasions, like Christmas and Easter. There they find the Church at its best, with all the pomp and circumstance of the services, the beautiful music and all the trappings of fine worship. However, they do not understand that these services must be prepared for long in advance. They don’t see that the participants have been faithfully working in the parish all year round and know just what needs to be done not just on the holidays, but Sunday after Sunday. Most of these folks do not see that Sunday School goes on regularly, that choir members spend hours in rehearsal for services all year round, and that members work hard to keep the church buildings and grounds in great shape. They do not see the shut-in who cannot get to church using his or her time calling other shut-ins to encourage them and give them someone to listen to. The list goes on. What if we didn’t have people who regularly offer their time and talent to their parish?
It is also important that we have dedicated parishioners who reach out to the world around us to share the Good News of Jesus. This happens when we take our time and talent and use it in Christ’s name in an outreach program beyond our doors. It happens when a stranger walks in the door and we welcome them to come hear about Jesus and join us as Christ’s followers. In short, we should live dedicated, committed Christian lives in all we do inside and outside the Church. What a different world we would live in if someday our Faith is so engrained in us that it is part of the fabric of our lives. Those who dedicate their time and talent to their parish, along with their financial resources, come closer to that goal every day. Yours in Christ,
Interim Rector

Christian Education
Christian Education classes (K-12) are held during the 10:30 a.m. service. The church provides Children’s
Bibles, but students are encouraged to bring their own from home. An Adult Forum is held at 9:30 a.m.
on the second floor of the Parish Hall. Refreshments are served.
May 5th – Sixth Sunday in Easter
First Lesson - Acts 16:9-15; The Psalm - Psalm 67, Psalm 150; The Epistle - Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5; The
Gospel - John 14:23-29
Focus scripture – Acts 16:9-15
Student will remember the story of Saul’s experience on the road to Damascus and that afterwards he
was given the name, Paul. We will reference the scripture and learn about Saul’s life since then. Discuss
in class and at home: Where were Paul and Silas at the beginning of this story? When Paul and Silas
arrived in Macedonia, what did they do on the Sabbath day? Whom did Paul and Silas meet there?
What do you think Paul and Lydia talked about?
Activity
Make figures to help tell the story of Lydia and Paul welcoming each other by the river. Take four
clothes pegs/clothespins and draw facial features. Wrap scraps of clothes and secure with rubber
bands. Tell the story together using the figures.
Take hand towels and fabric paints to create designs for a “prayer mat.” Once they have dried,
discuss ways of praying and encourage the students to use their mats during prayer times at home.
May 12th – Seventh Sunday of Easter
First Lesson - Acts 16:16-34; The Psalm - Psalm 97; The Epistle - Revelation 22:12-14, 20-21; The Gospel -
John 17:20-26
Focus scripture – Acts 16:16-34
In this week’s story, Paul was travelling with another follower of Jesus named Silas. Everywhere they
went, they would tell people the good news about Jesus who lived and taught God’s ways. What caused
Paul and Silas to be arrested? What happened to them while prisoners? What do you think the other
prisoners and jailers were thinking?
Activity
Use the Radio Play that is provided in our lesson plan or write one on your own based on the
scripture, Acts 16:16-34. Characters include: Slave girl, Paul, Silas, Narrator and Sound Crew. For
sound effects: heavy blocks of woods (walking], chains (for jail scene], rocks in a can [for
earthquake].
Make a prayer chain to represent the chains that bound Paul and Silas in jail. Construct using slips of
paper. Write the following scriptures on the slips of paper: Numbers 6:24-26, Philippians 1:9a,
Philippians 4:4, Psalm 103:8, Isaiah 41:10, Isaiah 43:1b-2, Psalm 145:14.
6
May 19th – Pentecost Sunday - LAST SUNDAY FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The Old Testament - Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31; The Psalm - Psalm 8; The Epistle - Romans 5:1-5; The
Gospel - John 16:12-15
Focus scripture – Acts 2:1-21
Pentecost derives from the prefix (the Greek “pente”) being the fiftieth day after Passover. In this
week’s scripture all Jesus’s friends and followers are together in Jerusalem to celebrate a special day
called the Feast of Pentecost. It was a time when Jewish people gave thanks to God for the harvest.
Read today’s focus and discuss in class or at home: What symbols are used to tell us about God’s Spirit?
How did the disciples experience the Holy Spirit?
Activity
• Pentecost ribbons – Gather dowels and ribbon. Write words and phrases in celebration of the day.
Attach the ribbons firmly to the dowels and twirl these to celebrate.
• Pentecost Pinwheels [shown on the left] – Cut out the square and
decorate on both sides. Cut along the solid lines. Use a hole punch to
make five holes—one in the middle and one in each corner. Thread
pinwheel onto a straw, starting with the middle hole and then bringing up
the corners from 1 to 4. Place tape over the last point to hold it closed.
Push pinwheel to the middle of straw and hold onto both ends. Blow into
cupped points.
Youth Group Please join us for the exciting times and fellowship. The Youth Group, (grades 6-12) is
participating in community projects, sharing with other church groups, and learning to
become good Christians. Check us out on Facebook.
Meeting
The May Youth Group meeting is scheduled for May 12th in the Youth Group room on the first floor of
the Parish Hall. We will be planning the games for the children to play at the Pentecost celebration on
May 19th.
We are also hoping to make a trip to Shrine Mont, possibly in October with the youth from Abingdon
Episcopal Church. Call Beth Richardson, 815-0988 if you are interested or want more information.
PICTURES! PICTURES! Do we have pictures? Yes, we do. The families who ordered picture CDs on
Easter can pick them up from the Youth or Beth Richardson.

wedding or baptism. To give flowers, please call Mary Ann Griffith, 693-6176 and to learn which

On about fifty Sundays a year, coffee and refreshments are served to the congregation

Recall Notice
The Maker of all human beings (GOD) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or
year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart. This is due to a
malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the
reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been identified as "Sub-
sequential Internal Non-morality," more commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily expressed.
Some of the symptoms include: loss of direction, foul vocal emissions, amnesia of origin, lack of
peace and joy, selfish or violent behavior, depression or confusion, fearfulness, idolatry, and
rebellion.
The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory-authorized
repair and service free of charge to correct this defect.
The Repair Technician, Yeshua (JESUS), has most generously offered to bear the entire burden of
the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no additional fee required.
The number to call for repair in all areas is: P-R-A-Y-E-R.
Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure.
Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Yeshua (Jesus,) into the heart
component.
No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Yeshua (Jesus) will replace it with: love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Please see the operating
manual, the B.I.B.L.E. (Best Instructions Before Leaving Earth) for further details on the use of these
fixes.
WARNING: Continuing to operate the human being unit without correction voids any manufacturer
warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems too numerous to list, and will result in the
human unit being permanently impounded. For free emergency service, call on Yeshua (Jesus).
DANGER: The human being units not responding to this recall action will have to be scrapped in the
furnace. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter Heaven so as to prevent contamination of
that facility. Thank you for your attention!
GOD
P.S. Please assist where possible by notifying others of this important recall notice, and you may
contact the Father any time by 'Knee mail'!
Because HE Lives!
