We are excited that our event grows a little every year. The event now offers over 100 vendors selling all types of interesting merchandise and services. As is also our

custom, we have three different stages along the event, presenting entertainment of all types - from big bands and singers, to dancers and theatrical performers. We also offer 2 different food courts for your dining pleasure with over 20 different vendors who will bring everything from traditional street-fair food such as sausage sandwiches and corn-dogs, to more sophisticated fare such as sushi and gourmet vegetarian dishes. Stop by Stage � at Howe Commons and listen to the Jack Furlong Orchestra, or the acoustic music from the Coffee House stage while enjoying the sophisticated fare offered by all new food vendors. Pennington Day continues its mission of two key focuses - creating good sustainability practices, and helping to raise the visibility of the arts in our community. We believe that these two elements are not only of great importance, but are in fact, an accurate reflection of the talents and concerns of this town. This year HVArts Council will again be exhibiting at Howe Commons where they are featuring The Art of Upcycling – a very creative artform that takes discarded junk and turns it into fine art! The Kid Zone also returns this year, sponsored by Capital Health and will have lots of bouncy fun for the kids to enjoy. Pennington Day is an event that that has something for people of all ages (and taste buds!) We are proud of our borough, and this event is an excellent way to highlight not only its charming aesthetics, but also the genuine hospitality and talents of its residents. Many thanks go to the borough administration, the borough workers who work very hard to make this event happen, and of course the fine people who I am lucky enough to have been working with for the past four years who comprise our board. They are an all-volunteer staff who work tirelessly to make the day a success for everyone. Thank a volunteer while you enjoy the day! The efforts of these very dedicated folks are living proof that the best projects in life are the collaborative ones. And this is always a truly collaborative effort - Community+Arts+Sustainability = Pennington Day! We hope you and your family and friends have a terrific day! What makes people stay here all of their lives and what makes their children return when it’s time to raise their

own? I’ve heard this town called names like Mayberry and Pleasantville affectionately so. There may be more traffic, more housing, and more restaurants, but the town remains small and intimate. Pennington will always be a special place where families thrive and everybody really does know your name.

How many towns are left that can boast the highest quality schools, thriving church communities, top rated sports and nationally recognized arts programs. It’s a commitment to live in this town, because you need to be a part of it and get involved.

Pennington Day celebrates the feeling of community, the spirit of volunteerism and the treasures of a small community. It’s a message that we are sending our children that says “we

care about how we live, we respect each other and we value our neighbors”.

Pennington Day has evolved into a large event with many moving parts and the coordination of not only the day but the grants can take many hours of a few dedicated individuals. Remember when you visit the sponsors, the booths, the food vendors and the bouncy houses that it isn’t just for fun, every one of these participant’s donations and rental fees make it possible to give back to the community in the form of 18 grants and thousands of dollars and many wishes answered.

The work resonates throughout the Hopewell Valley, from the Boy Scout troupes �1 and �� to Eagle Scouts building much needed food bins for Homefront. FISH, Friends in Service Here will benefit with a grant towards their senior meal service, as will Hopewell Valley Aging in Place.

Some may have noticed a wonderful and needed addition going onto the Pennington Fire

Department building, they will also receive a grant towards their improvements.

The Pennington Library, Farmers Market and the committee working to improve the garden at Hopewell Valley Central High School all will receive grants. The Pennington Players will receive a grant to keep their costumes stored for their good work throughout the year. The granting process is the heart that keeps this event beating throughout the year. Don’t miss the award ceremony at noon at The Crossroads stage as the �6 year tradition continues.

So take your time to explore and seize the day, take a deep breath and feel the warm sun finally touch your shoulders, not many people get to visit the real Mayberry.

A pop-up gallery of upcycled art – art that is created from recycled materials – will fill Howe Commons during Pennington Day

for a daylong exhibit of local artists, presented by the Hopewell Valley Arts Council.

The exhibition will include artwork featured reused or repurposed materials on loan from various artists including a mini retrospective from New Jersey native Guy Ciarcia, and works from artists including Carl Geisler, Sara Keeler, Leon Rainbow and pieces on loan from TerraCycle in Trenton. Artwork created by Bear Tavern Elementary School students also will be featured.

Rainbow, a nationally known Trenton-based graffiti artist, will reinvent a traditional wing-back chair by painting it in his signature style at 1 p.m. during the event.

photography, film and digital drawings, sculpture, ceramics, crafts and jewelry, will display a ten foot tall column made from recycled toys.

An art walk exhibit featuring works by 12 to 1� local artists including a portrait artist, watercolorists, acrylic painters, oil painters, decoupage artist, woodworker, and a ceramic artist also will occur throughout the day. Some artists will sell their work, others will be creating works on site and all will be available to interact with Pennington Day attendees.

Also throughout the day, the arts council is co-sponsoring the music stage featuring jazz musician Jack Furlong, who will play from 11:�0 to 2:�0 p.m.

Shake, Rattle and Roll at Four Stages all across the Town

A full day of dance, jazz, and rock and roll will fill the Crossroads main stage at the intersection of Main Street and Curlis

Avenue.The day kicks off with performances by the

Timberlane Middle School and Central High School jazz bands.

Following the musical performances, DanceWorks of Mercer County hits the stage for a lively show, followed by a noon performance by Pennington Dance Company. The company, which is closing this year with director Nancy Warner’s retirement, has performed at Pennington Day for �6 years.

This year’s program features ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and pre-school dance numbers. Under

Warner’s direction, the nonprofit dance troupe has offered young dancers the opportunity to experiment with their own choreography and to have additional performance experiences beyond the annual recital. Don’t miss the high energy astounding feats of Victory TaeKwonDo at 10:�0.

The stage will continue rocking throughout the afternoon with performances by School of Rock Princeton, CaRu Entertainment, a Pennington-based dance studio, and a culminating show by Mini Rockers.

The coffee house stage will turn down the volume a bit with performances from acoustic favorites like Mike and Laura to wake you up first thing in the morning and newcomer, Toby Brown.

The Jamboree Stage returns to the happy corner of Lanning and Main with street performers perfect for family entertainment.

Not to be missed, the Hopewell Valley Arts council and Pennington Day have teamed up to bring the infectious big band sounds of Jack Furlong’s Orchestra at Stage � on Howe Commons at 1:00.

The Return of the Bouncy Houses!Capital Health Plans The Return of a Wellness Focused Kids Zone

Looking for the perfect place to be with kids on Pennington Day? The bounce houses are back this year as part of a new and improved kids zone in the field behind Toll Gate Grammar School sponsored by

Capital Health and the Capital Health Auxiliary.All of the favorite inflatables will be there including the moon bounce,

obstacle course and slide, but new this year is sidewalk chalk art and a station where kids can create visors with staff from the Capital Health Pediatric Emergency Room.

With the outdoor season upon us, families will definitely want to see wellness stations featuring information including sun safety tips, bicycle safety with the Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center, free blood pressure screenings, nutrition information, medication safety and breast health and mammography scheduling.

hospital. “With the region’s most comprehensive maternity program and our pediatric ER, it made sense for us to champion a kid-friendly zone where we could offer kids a chance to have a good time and learn some important health information. Of course, we also want to make sure we provide valuable information for adults who come out, so we’ll be offering information and health education for them as well.”

The area also will offer jump roping and hula hooping, and ticket giveaways for the Trenton Thunder baseball team.

“The Capital Health Auxiliary is such an important partner for us and we are so excited to have them participate with us,” said Archbald.

Family is First at Greenacres Country ClubNothing says “kids” like summertime, and

before you know it the school books and homework will be traded in for swimsuits and s’mores. Now is the perfect time to start making plans for the summer your family has been waiting for.

Like most clubs in the area, Greenacres Country Club has been busy recently prepar-ing for a new year of fun and excitement. But this year, the Lawrenceville club has a host of new plans in the works, much of it designed for juniors and families with young children:

-For the first time, the club is offering a Junior Golf membership. Hopewell Valley Quilters are planning their annual Pennington Day show to be held from 10 a.m. to � p.m. in the

Toll Gate Grammar School cafeteria. The quilts on display are made by members and reflect a great variety of styles, from beautiful traditional patterns to contemporary works of fiber art.

This year’s show will include two special exhibits taking “circles” as the theme. The Quilters challenged themselves to make small quilts that incorporate this theme in creative and diverse ways. Also on display will be antique quilts and quilt blocks featuring circle designs.

Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite quilt in the show. The Viewers’ Choice Prize has been donated by Pennington Quiltworks. Admission to the show is only $1.00 and proceeds benefit Pennington Day 2016.

Hopewell Valley Quilters is an informal group that has been meeting for over �0 years.

A town’s history forever changed by the events at a school

Many of you may have heard the tale of the fire that destroyed O’Hanlon Hall on a cold January night in 1�80. While no one was hurt in the fire that claimed the majestic building, Pennington lost the spectacular

Shaw Chapel with its huge pipe organ and beautiful stained glass windows as well as many years of administrative records and archives. Faculty members who lived in O’Hanlon apartments lost all of their belongings, and they and students housed in adjoining Old Main residence halls had to seek shelter that night with local residents.Pennington Day was created to raise money for The Pennington School after it had lost so much. The event started as a small community picnic and has since evolved into a granting organization and festival that attracts thousands to the borough �6 years after it began.FUN FACTS ABOUT THE PENNINGTON SCHOOL• The Pennington School was founded in 18�8 and called the Methodist Episcopal Male Seminary at Pennington.• The cornerstone of the building now called Old Main was laid in May 18��.• It is among the �0 oldest boarding schools in the country.• The Pennington School boasts one of the oldest high school football programs in the nation.• In 18�� a coordinate department for young women was added, and the school became known as the Pennington Seminary and Female Collegiate Institute.• The Female Collegiate Institute was eliminated in 1�10, and the school became an all-boys institution until it became truly coeducational in 1��.• Dr. Thomas O’Hanlon holds the record for the longest tenure as head of the school (186�–18�� and 18�6–1�0�).• Former Secretary of State and three-time Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan was the keynote speaker at the School’s ��th anniversary celebration in 1�1�.• Dr. Francis Harvey Green was the headmaster at Pennington from 1�21 to 1��. One of his greatest legacies to the school is part of his collection of letters, manu-scripts, and books signed by the authors, as well as other memorabilia. A selection of books from Dr. Green’s collection is on display at Wesley Alumni House.• The Edmund Cervone Center for Learning was founded in 1�� to help talented students with learning disabilities and became a model for other such programs across the nation• The campus has seen considerable growth since the 1�80s, constructing several new buildings including the Health Center, the Campus Center, and the Kenneth Kai Tai Yen Humanities Building. The former Lowellden was completely restored and became the new Wesley Alumni House, and extensive renovations to historic Old Main, Meckler Library, and Stainton Hall are currently underway.• The Kenneth Kai Tai Yen Humanities Building has been awarded gold LEED certification.• By fall 201�, a new road that encircles the campus will create a pedestrian-only environment during the day.
