    Peace Corps here we come!

Our big news this year is that we have decided to end ourteaching careers and head off to the Peace Corps. After 39years of teaching, we decided it was time for a change. Westarted our application process in August of 2010, went forinterviews in October, and were nominated for a post in Centralor South America in December. We were originally scheduledfor an August 2011 departure, but budget cuts pushed us back toJanuary of 2012. On January 9th we fly to Miami, where we

have one day of orientation. On January 11th

we are on theplane to Panama City! For more details see our blog:http://steveandheatherbailey.blogspot.com

Aunt BJ SmithIn January we celebrated Aunt BJs 90th birthdaywith a dinner in Stockton, NJ. Sadly, she passed

away in June. She will be missed by all of us.

When we were originally planning on leaving for thePeace Corps in August, we planned a last familyweekend with Dave and Melissa in the Shawangunkmountains near New Paltz, NY. We had a wonderfultime hiking and biking in what has become one of ourfavorite places

    Memorial Day weekend

In June Steve completed his 22nd year at PrincetonDay School. His farewell tribute was given by DougMcLane, who also created a video about Steve basedon the Most Interesting Man in the World

This summer we decided to have the annualBailey family reunion in San Antonio.Instead of renting a big house or houses in a

resort area as we have done in the past, thefestivities this year centered on Ted andColleens house in SA. Their pool was a big

    hit with all generations.

Summer in SeattleIn mid August we all joined David in Seattle for a firstever family backpacking trip (on the OlympicPeninsula.) Dave and Melissa graciously volunteeredto carry the heavier packs and we camped two nightsnear a beautiful lake. A dip in the frigid water was awelcome end to each hot day of hiking. Melissa

returned to the east coast and Steve and Heather spentanother week hiking and visiting friends. They even

got a chance to hike on Mt. Ranier in the sun!

We rented our house out in July as we hadexpected to ship out in August. Our delayeddeparture left us homeless for five months.

Friends came to the rescue and gave us the useof their Stone Harbor, NJ, beach house wherewe resided on and off until December. It was a

beautiful place where we were able to relax aftera stressful time of moving out of the house andputting things into a storage unit. We hadaccumulated a lot of stuff in the past 22 years, and it felt good to get rid of a lot of unneededitems.

    October in the Gunks

We spent most of the month of October in theShawanagunk mountains, which we have grownto love over the years. We hiked and bikedalmost every day, and were lucky to only havetwo or three days of rain the whole time we werethere. We enjoyed visits from family and friends

    while we were there.

    November visits

November found us making visits to see Baileyfamily members for one last time before we takeoff in January. We had a wonderful time visiting

brother Doug and family in Chicago and brotherTed and Dad in San Antonio.

    Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving gave us a chance to get together

with the Smith side of the family and also to seeDave and Melissa together again for the final time

before our departure. We had a great time!

    Snowmass!

In December we were invited to Snowmass forsome skiing by the family of a former student ofSteves. We had a wonderful time skiing the bigmountains of Colorado. It will be a long time

before we go skiing again, as we dont return from

the Peace Corps until late March of 2014!

We wish all of you a peaceful and happy New Year. We look forward to hearing fromyou and would love to have visitors in Panama once we find out where we will be living!
