PEKIN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT 108

WASHINGTON INTERMEDIATE 501 Washington Street

Pekin, Illinois 61554

Marc Fogal, Principal Telephone: (309) 477-4721 Jason Fowler, Assistant Principal Fax: (309) 477-4729

Dear Washington Intermediate Students and Families:

It was great seeing so many of our students and their families during our Meet the Teacher Open House. I hope that each of

you had an enjoyable summer and had some time for fun, exploration and relaxation. I am looking forward to another great

school year. I want to welcome back our returning students and extend a warm welcome to all of our new students and their

families. Your children will be welcomed each morning by nearly 50 outstanding staff members. I am very proud to work

with each of them and invite you to get to know them throughout the school year.

A new school year is always an exciting time for all. It presents opportunities for various beginnings – new classes, new

faces, new expectations, a busier schedule, and more choices; all while learning new and exciting things.

Our goal is to challenge your child academically, grow them socially and emotionally, and guide them toward independent

thinking and problem solving. Students will be encouraged to display good character and to make positive choices that will

result in successful outcomes. We are looking forward to a great school year filled with enriching activities and learning

experiences that will help your child display “Warrior R.E.S.P.E.C.T.!”

Parents, please take time to:

• Visit our school webpage at http://www.pekin.net/Domain/14. There you will find our parent handbook, calendar

of events, monthly newsletters, pictures, and other important information;

• Talk with your child about their school day. Ask them specific questions about their time at school. For example,

“What was the most interesting thing you did in math class today?” or “Tell me about the book you are currently

reading;”

• Review your child’s grades on SkyWard. This portal will give you relevant information regarding your child’s per-

formance on their homework, a test or quiz as well as their attendance. Your interest and concern in their school

progress will motivate them to do their best;

• Maintain contact with your child’s teachers and staff members to establish a successful home/school connection.

Finally, I want to remind our students that you do not have to follow the crowd – one person can make a difference. Always

do the right thing… even when you think nobody is watching! Parents, please help us by reinforcing school expectations at

home. With your help, Washington Intermediate School will continue to be a school community in which every person feels

respected, valued, and is encouraged and challenged to achieve at the highest levels.

I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year to provide a productive and safe learning en-

vironment that supports student success. Once again, welcome to Washington Intermediate School. Go Warriors!!!

Respectfully,

Marc Fogal, Principal

Music Class and Choir at WIS!

You might wonder what your child will be learning in music class this year. All learning in the music

room is active, following the model of Orff-Schulwerk process. The various means of learning include:

improvising (making music “on the spot” creatively), singing, playing instruments, listening to/analyzing

music, dancing/movement and composition in order to gain new concepts and skills and learn about cul-

ture and history in our world. In other words, students will make music first, and learning will stem from

their experiences.

Choir for 5th and 6th grade will begin during the second week of September after school, from

2:45-3:30. Notes have already been handed out and should have already been returned with the t-shirt/

bus/supply money and 2 forms. If, by chance, you have not seen this choir information and your child is

interested, please contact me! At this point, it isn’t too late!

*Tuesday, September 5- Sixth Grade Choir begins

*Thursday, September 7- Fifth Grade Choir begins

4th grade parents- The spring Music Showcase Concert will be in April. Once I get to know the

students better, I will divide them into their concert performing groups. We have 8 sections of 4th grade

this year, which means that concerts will need to be held on 2 separate evenings. One group will perform

on April 23 and the other group will perform the following evening on April 24. Both performances will

begin at 6 PM. Be on the lookout in the upcoming newsletter for your child’s performance date.

Feel free to email me: [email protected] or call the school directly. 477-4700 Ext.

I am looking forward to a great year!

Dear Parents/Guardians, To encourage our students to read and learn about different types of books, the Wash-

ington School Learning Center has a Genre Study. Genres are a collection or group of books with similar themes.

On the BACK of this sheet are the descriptions of the sixteen different types of genres that will be introduced. Each child participating in this reading adventure will be given a Genre Folder that will remain in the teachers’ genre boxes. The folder will have spaces for each book read.

Your student’s goal: Read nine (9) different genres and complete Teacher’s Choice ( a

passing AR-quiz, Book Review, Book Talk, Book Project, One Pagers) so they can at-tend the Genre Celebration!

How your student participates: 1. They choose one the 16 genres to read. 2. They complete one-pagers and selected activity (Varies by classroom). 3. They get the Student Genre Form signed by their teacher. 4. Students will bring the form to the Learning Center when they come to Book

Checkout. 5. They will give their form to the Learning Center Staff to get credit for completing a

genre.

***Important to Remember: They must complete 9 different genres by May 1, 2018. If they complete 3 genres by November 10, 2017 = a bookmark! If they complete 3 more genres by March 2, 2018 = a pencil! If they complete the last 3 genres by May 1, 2018 = a certificate! To be eligible for these items they have to be completed by the dates listed

above. At the end of the year, we have a Celebration for all students who have read NINE of the

genre categories AND finished the teacher’s choice. There will also be monthly draw-ings for prizes. We’re looking forward to talking with your student about the Genre Study!
