Monday Warm Up Commas Separating Independent Clauses

You Try It:

Choose one of the F A N B O Y S and write a compound sentence about “Spooky Spider”. Your sentence must have two independent clauses which are separated by a comma and one of the F A N B O Y S.

Example: Camel spiders are found in Iraq, and they can travel very fast.

Camel spiders grow to be approximately 5”-6” leg span, and they can move very quickly. These spiders use only three pairs of legs when they run. They shun the sun and hide during the day. They feed on small prey such as scorpions, crickets, and lizards. http://video.nationalge

INTRODUCTORY ELEMENTS are . . . Rule 2 -(lesson)

Practice these sentences by putting the commas after the introductory elements.

• Since they considered John Henry a hero many people liked to tell stories about him.

• In these stories John Henry was always the strongest character.

• When John Henry heard about a contest against a machine he signed up for it.

• After that he became a folk hero.

• As Carl Sandburg shows Paul Bunyan was famous for his great size and strength.

• In his youth Paul could wrestle a bear to the ground.

Phrases or Clauses that come at the beginning of a sentence which require a comma.

Examples:

•After the game, everyone went to Chickfila for fries and drinks.

•After West Hall won the game, everyone went to Chickfila for fries and drinks.

•Before the movie, the girls went shopping at the mall.

•Before they went to the movie, the girls went shopping at the mall.

Wednesday Warm Up Introductory Elements

When the students entered class today, they came in quietly.

After we finish our warm up sentences, we will read the story.

• YOU TRY IT:

Put a comma after the introductory element.

When we went to our grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, we were surprised by all the food!

If we go again next year, she will probably have even more!

Commas in a series are used when . . . Rule 3 (lesson)

Practice these sentences by putting the commas after the items in a series.

• Today we will have possum grits and ketchup soup for lunch.

• I will eat with my friends get an ice cream and go back to class all in thirty minutes!

• My friends and I will go to the mall, we will do a little shopping, and we will just hang out for a while.

. . . three or more items in a sentence should be separated by commas.

Examples:

•Mrs. Henry always talks about cows, pigs, and chickens!

•I don’t know if she’s talking about milking the cows, feeding the pigs, or eating the chickens!

•I think that if she feeds the cows, eats the pigs, and milks the chickens, everyone will be very confused!

• I brought my lunch to school today: a sandwich, an apple, and a snack.

• The farmer raised three main forms of livestock: cows, pigs, and chickens.
