Benjamin Franklin
What the Brain Has Told Us About Learning
• Lecture/discussion activities are the least effective ways to enhance learning
• Teaching methods should match more closely with how learners learn
• Rather than bringing learners to classrooms, faculty can work directly with learners in simulated work environments
Deliberate Practice
Activities that are specifically designed to improve the current level of performance
Repeated application with use of knowledge over extended periods of time leads to remarkably good retention
However……….The lack of adequate feedback make efficient learning impossible. Mere repetition does not automatically improve performance
Core Principles
• Learning – active pedagogy
• Knowledge in action creating effective results
• Value learning over teaching
• Trust the learners to learn much of the factual knowledge outside of class
• Learners must be prepared and active learners everyday
• Knowledge in Action-not factual memorization (Science that sticks)
• Assessment that reflects Core Principles
• Critical thinking
Core Principles
Essential Elements:
• Collaboration
• Respectful communication
• Reflection
• Application of knowledge and skills
• Experience in interprofessional teams
Simulation: An Innovative Learning Strategy
Live simulation
Learner-centric environment
Experiential, emotionally engaging activity
Enhances self-discovery and learning through debriefing and reflection
Emphasizes learning outcomes
Stresses teamwork, communication, critical thinking and technical skills

Curriculum Based Experiences
• Pre-Post Assessments
• Executive Coaching
• Flipped Classroom Curriculum• Pre-work for each course
• Case Based Education
• Simulation
• Small Group Discussions
• Large Group Discussion
• Executive Forums
• Exposure to Senior Executives
• Executive Sponsor Involvement/Participation
• Leadership Application Project
Leadership Application Project
• Effective learning requires three components: education and training, coaching and mentoring, and on-the-job experiences and application
• Enable participants to apply the leadership knowledge and skills obtained from the program back at your site
• Leading or co-leading the effort
• Involves the support and collaboration of other people
• Questions post-course encourage applying knowledge learned to an individual participant’s specific project• Think about your Leadership Application Project and a situation in which there is a difference in
desired outcome between various parties (this could be between individuals who are on your team or between different functional areas). What strategies from this Conflict Management and Negotiation Strategies session could you use to create an opportunity for all parties to feel equally successful?
• Knowledge Exchange at the end of the program
Month Day, Year 25
Provided tools which helped guide day to day decision-making when faced with difficult decisions
I have found that I am more mindful of situations that require
advanced leadership skill sets and that I am becoming more
facile at navigating these circumstances in ways I had not
done previously.
I don't have to have all the answers and I
don't have to feel threatened by others who
do. I feel more comfortable in working with
others so that each person's strengths are
utilized to optimize the achievement of goals.
I am happy I was chosen to be part of this
program and I am constantly applying skills I
learned from the program. my view of the
overall Northwell organization is so much
enriched because of the program. I have a lot
of friends whom I can talk to anytime and seek
help and advice. I communicate with them in a
language we learned together in our class
which is a special relationship and that is
benefit of being part of the program.
