MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATEExceptional Experiences. Successful Lives.
Preparing for Life After Coronavirus
With one announcement earlier this year life as we know it changed dramatically. Commutes to the office, visits to the local shops, drinks at the pub, celebrating birthdays with friends, holidays, gym classes, family visits, hugs and handshakes were all removed from our list of daily activities.
The Coronavirus pandemic is history defining. It is the biggest crisis that the UK and many other countries have faced in peacetime, so the response has been unlike anything most of us have ever experienced.
Over recent weeks we have seen signs of the lockdown easing and from the fourth of July the country will take another significant step towards normality. However, we must all recognise that our pre-pandemic life of last minute trips, walk in dinner reservations and large crowds at festivals are a long way off. If there remains a threat of the virus, even if it is much smaller than the first half of 2020, life will continue to be different.
As a nation we need to be sensible and patient as we move into a life ‘Post Coronavirus’. We will all be able to broaden our daily activities and meet with family and friends, but it is key that we do this within the confines of the latest guidance. Only if we manage this next transition responsibly will we be able to move closer to normal life without the risk of a second spike and enforced local lockdown.
Working together we can move out of this pandemic and enjoy a more positive experience over the coming months . In the last fourteen weeks we have seen people unite for the common good and show concern and support for the more vulnerable and less fortunate in our communities. It would certainly be refreshing if this lasted and people pulled together to deliver a local recovery plan.
Keep safe and well.

You may recall that in week five of lockdown we highlighted a family who were inspiring their children to dream about post-Coronavirus adventures.
During lockdown every time they wished they could do something, go somewhere, treat themselves, see someone they love, visit a new place, invite people to visit them, they wrote it down on a post it note and put it in a jar. When the Coronavirus lockdown ends, the family plan to work their way through their bucket list in the jar and be more grateful than ever for the little and lovely things in their lives.
We thought it might be interesting to see what sort of things they had captured on the post it notes.

WIDER OPENING - MESSAGES OF SUPPORT FROM PARENTS/CARERS
MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE
As we enter our third week of wider opening, one of the most heartening aspects of the work we have been doing has been the enthusiasm of the children for returning to school and the feedback we have received from parents about the measures we have put in place. Pupil safety and wellbeing has been right at the heart of our approach to this crisis and the positive comments you have sent us make the hard work on the part of all our teams worthwhile. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to share some of these messages we have received with you all.
These are just some of the wonderful comments that we have received this week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your help, your patience and your support throughout this period. It has certainly demonstrated the strength of our communities.
PREPARED FOR THE
CHALLENGE OF CHANGE
“I know everyone is trying their hardest to make it safe and I can't thank them enough. All the teachers have been amazing over this difficult time - thank you for all your support”
“I was a little nervous about sending my child this morning but as soon as I got on to school grounds you could tell they’ve done everything possible to keep the children and staff safe! My child ran straight in with a massive smile on their face and didn’t even look back at me! Honestly, the school should be so proud!”
“Thank you for the information with regards to the reopening of the school. I have found it very informative and encouraging that you have taken steps to protect our children and staff at this very worrying time.”
“You're all doing amazing, you really are. I can't show my appreciation enough!
“I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to staff and governors for all their knowledge, support and information during this unprecedented, unpredictable time. I have felt fully informed by both the school and the Trust.”
“The school have kept parents updated of any announcements or changes. I particularly liked that there was a site tour to share with the children in order to allow parents to talk and prepare their children ready for them coming back. Also, I have enjoyed reading the weekly updates from the Trust and finding out about other schools within the Trust.”
“My youngest son has gone back into school this week. He has been so excited to be back and has definitely still got that love for learning, which is fantastic to see. As a parent I just want my children to be happy and safe and as a school I feel you are playing a very important part, so thank you!”

SIXTH FORM PROVISION
WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?
We recognise how important it is for students to make the transition from from GCSE to Post 16 learning. Our sixth form provision will enable all students to leave armed with academic success and highly developed broader skills which will allow them to secure the best opportunities in higher education, work basedtraining or employment.
To ensure that this is achieved, we offer a wide variety of successful academic and vocational courses to enable students to build on the success they have achieved during Key Stage 4. Students study a smaller range of subjects in greater depth, often gaining valuable experience in the workplace. Students develop their personal learning and thinking skills through a variety of enrichment opportunities.
The Sixth Form Community is warm and welcoming. Students are supported by a dedicated team of tutors and leaders as well as teaching staff who are passionate about their subjects.
QUOTES FROM STUDENTS
“The Academy Sixth Form is a forward-looking and ambitious learning community where aspirations are high and excellence is a common goal.”
“Being in the Sixth Form makes you feel part of a team. There is always someone available to talk and advise you through any problems you might have.”
“The Sixth Form team know all the students. They can offer personal advice about university options or can help you get a really good job.”
“Sixth a Form is about reaching your potential - both academically and emotionally.”

Outstanding learning facilitated by exceptional teachers and developed by committed students is the key to our continued success.

As with many things, the senior student selection process at Wath needed to be adapted during lockdown. Rather than our traditional ballot boxes we instead opted for an electronic form, and pleasingly this led to more votes cast this year than in any other in recent memory. I am pleased to announce the following Senior Student positions which will take immediate effect:
SIXTH FORM LEADERSHIP - WATH ACADEMY
MEET THE HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL
ALEX MCEWAN (HEAD BOY)
I made the decision to come to Wath Sixth Form as I
wanted to build on the positive changes that I had
made in recent years and to make further progress
in my education. In my younger school years, it
would be fair to say that I had a less than exemplary
record. However, as my GCSEs approached, I
realised that anything other than 100% commitment
would not enable me to reach my full potential.
Wath Academy Sixth Form is a place where I feel confident and able to achieve
anything. I am determined to get the grades I need to go to university and lead a
happy, healthy and successful life. I chose to study the Diploma in BTEC Sport, Product
Design and the Extended Project Qualification. I enjoy ‘doing’ and the practical
nature of my subjects suits the way I learn best.
Becoming Head Boy quickly became an aspiration of mine as I wanted younger
students to see that with the right growth mindset and setting yourself the highest
expectations anything is possible. It is humbling that my teachers and other students
voted for me to become Head Boy. I certainly do not take their support for granted
and throughout the year I aim to repay their faith and make a positive contribution to
school life. I look forward to the year ahead and am proud that I will be part of the
rich History of Wath Academy Sixth Form.
MILLIE BIRCH (HEAD GIRL)
I have been a student at Wath since Year 7 and have
continued into the Sixth Form to study A-level Biology,
Psychology and BTEC Dance Extended Diploma. I am
delighted to have been appointed as Head Girl as I want
to contribute to the wider school community and work with
Senior Leaders within the school in order to represent the
opinions and views of students at Wath. Also, I wanted this
responsibility because I believe I have the qualities needed in
order to succeed in this role. I want to encourage students to
embrace our key drivers including “Never give up” and inspire younger students to be
resilient, hard working and determined and who always try to be the best version of
themselves.
In 2018, I had life changing surgery in Philadelphia, United States to prevent a serious spinal
condition progressing to the point where it might jeopardise my dancing aspirations.
Unfortunately, this resulted in me missing two months of school at the end of Year 10.
However, with my determination, positive mindset, and commitment to
my studies, I achieved 8’s and 9’s in my GCSE’s. This meant that I had exceeded
my GCSE target grades by 2-3 grades, which is something that I am very proud of.
I am so grateful to have been voted Head Girl and I am very excited to be
involved in making positive changes at Wath Academy.
HEAD BOY: Alex McEwan | HEAD GIRL: Millie Birch
DEPUTY HEAD BOY: Matthew Saxton | DEPUTY HEAD GIRL: Charlotte Sutton
SENIOR STUDENTS: Lucy Booth, Annie Cutler, Ben Fielding, Katie Hawksworth, Elli-Jane Little, Lewis Nuttall, Imogen Rooney, Charlotte Spiby, Elizabeth Tonge, Daisy Turton, Zerkif Yazigan

NURSERY PROVISION - MALTBY LEARNING TRUST (SEPTEMBER 2020)
MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE
LATEST GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
This week the government confirmed that as part of the ongoing moves to relax the current lockdown restrictions, they are intending to further loosen the current restrictions on childcare. This will see providers being able to work with our academies and, crucially, our teacher-led nursery provisions, to provide the wraparound care that parents need. We will be working with the providers serving all our sites to make sure we can safely meet the need for this important aspect of childcare provision. We know that the combination of high quality, teacher led early years provision and well run, supportive childcare is crucial to give parents the confidence of knowing they are doing the very best for their children. We will be doing everything possible to make sure this is in place for September when we welcome you back to school.
RAVENFIELD PRIMARY ACADEMY NURSERY - UNDER CONSULTATION TO OPEN SEPTEMBER 2020

Q A
Who inspires you?I get inspiration from the positive people around me. I have been very lucky in my life to be
surrounded by people whose work ethic and life ethos are full of positivity and enthusiastic
energy. I like to feed from that good energy as this makes me thrive within my working and
private life. It would be very easy to name big inspirational people like Nelson Mandela who
have positively changed people’s beliefs, but I look to my daughter who has special needs.
It remained uncertain if she would be able to talk, walk, ride a bike or a horse, but her
determination and life enjoyment mean she can do all those things. If she can achieve
then so can I.
What was the best concert you ever attended?I am a big music fan and I cannot tell you how many concerts and music festivals I have
attended. To put this into perspective my favourite band is called James, led by Tim Booth.
For those that don’t know them, one of their biggest hits was Sit Down. I have seen James
17 times! The Killers , Reverend and the Makers, Foo Fighters, Artic Monkeys, Kings of Leon,
Snow Patrol, Oasis, Muse, and the whole catalogue of Indie and Pop music bands - all of
them I seen several times.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?A little town called Ciudadela on the island of Menorca, which is where I am from. It will
stay forever with me - our daily routine saw us coming out of my door and stepping onto
the beach. We would spend hours swimming until my mother shouted us in for dinner. Great
times.
What’s your favourite movie?I am a massive movie fan and I can watch almost anything - thrillers, science fiction and
musicals are my favourites. I can watch the same film over and over again and not get
bored. I have watched Grease over 25 times 17 of them on the trot within 5 days. I really
enjoyed the Bourne trilogy and would love to have Jason Bourne’s skills.
What’s your favourite family tradition? We don’t have an actual tradition that I can think of. We have several family activities. We
love camping and always try to do 2 or 3 trips a year. I remember the early days when we
would struggle in a two-man tent, now we have a huge tent with all the mod cons – we
have fantastic weekends away!
What’s your favourite meal and which four people would you choose to eat it with?Spanish Paella. I would cook it Menorcan style on a wooden fire under the
trees, at the side of the beach. No plates, just divide into sections and each
person eats their portion, straight from the pan. As a massive golf fan my idol
Tiger Woods would be there, my passion for football and love for Real Madrid
would see the legend that is Raul, Elvis to keep us rocking and to provide
entertainment with his fabulous stories, Steven Spielberg.
Who would you like to swap places with for a day?The devil. I would try to reverse the bad in the world; end the wars, end the diseases, end the
suffering. I would make a pact with God to have peace between all human race. Ok it
sounds cheesy, but wouldn’t this be great?
What’s your secret talent that no-one knows about?During lockdown I have discovered that I can bake! I have always been able to cook, but
since the lockdown started, I began baking and it has become a passion of mine. The Great
British Bake Off, here I come!
What are some of your pet peeves? I don’t get annoyed easily but rudeness and lack of care from people do annoy me. It takes
no effort to be nice to each other. Also talking to someone on the phone while they are
chewing something - no thank you!
During this period of lockdown, what are you missing about daily life?Visiting and entertaining friends. It has always been a big feature in our lives, I am very lucky
to have great friends and we see each other regularly. I cannot wait for a little normality to
be able to see and hug them all again.
What are you enjoying doing during lockdown? My family. My wife Debbie and my daughter Hollie are my world. This lockdown
has given us the opportunity to have genuine quality time together which normally
is not possible due to work commitments and life demands. Nice walks, riding
our horses together, games and a host of new experiences that normally
we would not have - more to come when the hot tub arrives!

Q A
MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE
Who inspires you? This is very difficult so I have chosen someone from history who is extremely inspirational,
Anne Frank. We have no idea of what true ‘lockdown’ is. I have visited her museum and
read her diary and I am amazed by how much hope she had during such a difficult time.
What was the best concert you ever attended?Just in case my husband reads this... It has to be Bon Jovi! We went to see them at the
Etihad Stadium in Manchester and I must admit they were amazing.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?Rome! I have visited Rome three times already and hope to go back again soon. It is one
place I have visited and honestly felt like I had travelled back in time. It is an incredible
place and there is still so much more for me to see.
What’s the last book you read? The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. After being a Harry Potter fan for many
years I have decided to give the LOTR trilogy a chance.
What’s your favourite movie? My favourite movie is Titanic. I have never watched this film without crying! I like a good
romance but I am also interested in the history surrounding the film Titanic. I travelled to
Belfast a few years ago to visit the Titanic museum and it was really interesting.
What’s your favourite family tradition?I live around 4 hours away from my family as they live in Norfolk so anytime with my family is
special. My favourite tradition would be our Christmas Eve BBQ at my mum and dad’s
house. We get wrapped up, light the chiminea outside and have burgers and hot dogs.
Who would you like to swap places with for a day?James Cameron (director of the film Titanic). He has travelled in a submarine to visit the
wreckage of the Titanic over 100 times. What an amazing experience this would be!
What’s your favourite meal and which four people would you choose to eat it with?My favourite meal would be a curry (not too hot) with poppadoms and
mango chutney. I would invite Michael Buble (especially if it’s Christmas time)
as he could sing during the evening. I would invite Michael Scott (Steve Carrell)
from The Office as he would make everyone laugh. I would invite Cleopatra
as she is one of the most famous historical female rulers and I would have
lots of questions to ask her about Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. Lastly,
I would invite my Grandad Peter. He passed away before I graduated from
university. I would love the chance to talk to him again.
What’s your secret talent that no-one knows about?I am not sure this is a secret to my colleagues at Ravenfield Primary but when I was younger I
was a Scout. My secret talents because of this include speedily putting up a tent, great aim
when shooting targets (especially in archery) and being able to make and cook on a
campfire. I’ve once cooked a roast chicken on a campfire.
What are some of your pet peeves? I find it irritating when people eat with their mouth open or talk with their mouth full.
I also think manners are really important. I do not like it when people do not say please and
thank you.
During this period of lockdown, what are you missing about daily life?I am desperately missing going travelling. Last year, my husband and I spent the summer
holidays travelling America and before returning home got married in Las Vegas. This year
we had organised to travel South America and unfortunately we have had to cancel this
trip! We are hoping we can go next year instead.
What are you enjoying doing during lockdown?I have enjoyed spending time with my husband and my stepson Troy, who is 8.
It has been lots of fun homeschooling him.

As the world starts to get back to normal it’s not surprising if we find ourselves feeling a little on edge and restless. There may be days when we feel hyperactive and other days when it’s hard to feel motivated. After so much uncertainty, this isn’t unusual and, providing these two modes of being are not too extreme, or too frequent, then some simple mindful and distraction techniques might be helpful.
To understand the relationship between mood and activity, the ‘getselfhelp’ resource might be useful, or for tips on helping your children manage their mood, click here.
Alternatively, try some of the strategies on this page.

RELAXATION
When our minds are full of different, sometimes conflicting thoughts, it can be difficult to relax. This means our bodies are in a state of high alert which ultimately, is exhausting. Read about relaxation techniques or, try some relaxation and guided imagery.
Your children might find some activities in this self-help book useful too.
EXERCISE
Taking some form of exercise helps us to focus our attention, distracts us from unhelpful thoughts and is good for our physical health. Find a walk near you.
Why not try some mountain climbing, planking or ski sits at home. Perhaps you could slither like a snake with your children!
ARTS AND CRAFT
Engaging in creative activities are also good distraction techniques, concentrate our minds and also give our mental health a boost when we produce something new.
For budding artists, here are some ideas to get you started. Why not make some lemonadefor those warmer days. Or, try making a windchime with your children.

Last week we talked about students who had been volunteering during lockdown, so we had to give Melissa and her Dad a mentionthis week, from MALTBY MANOR ACADEMY, who take a bin liner and a litter picker on their daily walk around Maltby to help keep the area as clean and litter free as possible to ensure that the community they live in is being well looked after. How fantastic!
Staff at MALTBY REDWOOD ACADEMY have been so proud of their students’ enthusiasm about learning since they returned to school. They are particularly proud of our Year 1 children who have returned this week - it's as if they've never been away! They have really enjoyed doing their socially distanced phonics activities.
SIR THOMAS WHARTON ACADEMY Careers Leader, Mrs Brooke, was asked to present at the Heppsy conference and the local Careers Hub meeting this week to share the fantastic careers provision she has put in place before and during lockdown. Her work was heralded as extremely good practice.
WATH ACADEMY has reduced the number of online Maths tasks set for students, with more investigation tasks being introduced for Years 7 and 8. Nevertheless, over the last week, students answered 19,260 questions on Hegarty Maths, with an 83% success rate; which still keeps WA in the top 10% of Hegarty schools!
Our Key Worker students at MALTBY LILLY HALL ACADEMY have created this fantastic videoabout social distancing! Watch it here - it’s so brilliantly informative, if you didn’t understand it before, you will now!
Teaching staff from all of our Primary Academies have been keeping children entertained throughout lockdown by reading regular stories from home. Click Here to watch this week’s installation from Miss Pritchard at MALTBY LILLY HALL ACADEMY.
It has been great to see so many students taking part in the MALTBY ACADEMY PE Bingo Challenge! Students from all schools are welcomed to get involved, click here for more information.
