St. John Baptist de La Salle (1651-1719) was
a Catholic priest who founded a religious
congregation of lay school teachers called the
Brothers of Christian Schools (in the
Philippines, they are more popularly known as
the De La Salle Brothers) in Rheims, France,
over 300 years ago. He was canonized in
1900 and was proclaimed as the Patron Saint of Christian Teachers in
1950.
Despite a comfortable, respectable and promising life as a priest, St. La
Salle sought for a more meaningful way to serve God. Consequently,
in 1679, at the age of 28, he took up the challenge of setting up
gratuitous schools for the poor. In the succeeding year, he brought into
his own home the school teachers amidst criticisms from his own
family. He then spent most of his time forming them into a genuine
community with a common spirit and purpose. The strength of St. La
Salle’s commitment to the cause of educating the poor and ensuring
the availability of religiously-motivated lay teachers led him to give up
his high position as a canon in the Cathedral of Rheims, as well as his
other financial assets. St. La Salle also had the unique ability of
converting traditional methods of teaching into practical strategies that
were more useful to the type of students in his schools and the limited
resources of the schools. At the time of St. La Salle’s death 40 years
later, his initial efforts had led to the creation of 27 houses and 274
brothers serving 9,000 students.
Like most charitable causes, St. La Salle’s work was constantly
challenged by opposition, controversy and betrayal. However, he
always faced each trial with prayer and penance.

In the rule book written by St. La Salle, he cited the three essential
elements that form the spirit of the Institute of Christian Brothers: a
spirit of FAITH, an ardent ZEAL for the instruction of children, and
lastly, a true spirit of COMMUNITY.
The WORKS of St. John Baptist de La Salle were primarily
characterized by a concern for the disadvantaged, a sensitivity to social
issues, quality teaching with a practical orientation, and elevation of the
despised function of a school teachers to a vocation with a lifetime
commitment.
His LIFE was filled with meditation and prayer, and a very strong faith
in God. And as a loyal and committed servant of God, St. La Salle
would often be heard saying these words:
Domine, opus tuum – Lord, the work is yours.

Today the organization founded by St. John Baptist De La Salle 320
years ago has grown to include 80 countries with over 73,000 partners
and 900,000 students. After St. La Salle, the Institute of the Brothers of
the Christian Schools has been governed by 26 Superiors. The current
Superior General is BROTHER ALVARO RODRIGUEZ ECHEVERRIA FSC.
He leads the Central Administration office located in Rome, Italy.
The Philippines is one of 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific with schools
run by the Brothers of Christian Schools. The Brothers first arrived in
our country in 1911. They were asked by Archbishop Jeremiah Harty
(a Lasallian alumnus) and by Pope Pius X to open a school for the
children of businessmen and traders. Presently, there are 41 Brothers
in the Philippine District (or Philippine Lasallian Family) and 17 district
schools. The current head (called “VISITOR”) of the Philippine District
is BROTHER EDMUNDO FERNANDEZ FSC.
The DLSHSI is the only school in the district that is entirely dedicated to
health-related education, service and research. DLSHSI consists of 3
major units: the Academe, which consists of the College of Medicine,
the College of Nursing, College of Medical Radiation Technology, the
College of Physical Therapy and the School of Midwifery; the DLSU
Medical Center and the DLSU Angelo King Medical Research Center.
This campus was acquired by the De La Salle Brothers in 1987.
OUR HISTORY
Your Family and Home | 5
De La Salle Health Sciences Institute
The PHILIPPINE LASALLIAN FAMILY refers to the entire community of
Lasallians: Brothers, Sisters, students, parents, alumni, teachers,
support staff and benefactors who have been or are currently
connected to La Salle by virtue of their employment, enrollment or
participation in a Lasallian ministry, and who explicitly or implicitly
consider themselves members of the Lasallian Family. (Document
Defining Lasallian Associations, Associates and Other Relationships)
The Lasallian Family has grown quite rapidly because membership is
based on a shared mission, with the various levels of organization
distinguished only by the depth of one’s commitment to the mission.
Your enrollment at the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute
automatically makes you a member of the Lasallian family together with
your parents. At any time you may choose to deepen your commitment
to the Lasallian Vocation. To quote Brother Arian Lopez, the former
Vocations Promoter in our country, “The Lasallian Vocation has
broadened to include a variety of people engaged in different tasks at
different levels yet
contributing to the
fulfillment of a single
goal - that of serving
the poor and the
youth-at-risk through
the ministry of
education”.
It is our hope that as
a member of the
Lasallian Family, you
will eventually
become an active
participant in one of the five Lasallian vocations: BROTHER, YOUTH,
PARTNER, SISTER and VOLUNTEER.

Student Handbook 2010-2013
Preamble
Deeply moved, as St. John Baptist de La Salle was, by the plight of the poor and youth-at-risk, we, the members of the Lasallian schools in the Philippines, commit ourselves to the Lasallian Mission of providing a human and Christian education to the young, especially in schools, with the service of the poor as priority, in order to evangelize and catechize, to promote peace and justice, accomplishing these together as shared mission. We draw strength from the many Lasallians committed to incarnating our charism in our country today to serve the needs of the Filipino youth, especially those at risk.
Declaration
Inflamed by the Holy Spirit, God’s own Fire, we declare our commitment to the following:
We shall work together as a national network of Lasallian schools in the Philippines for the efficient and effective implementation of the Lasallian Mission, following the directives of the De La Salle Brothers and the Philippine Lasallian Family as set by the General Chapter and the Philippine Lasallian Family Convocations.
We shall ensure the integrity of the Lasallian Mission by setting directions and standards applicable to the Philippine Lasallian schools and by monitoring their implementation.
We shall promote the Lasallian Mission by fostering synergy, collaboration and sharing among Lasallian schools.
We shall uphold the Lasallian values of faith, zeal for service and communion in mission.
Prayer
In all these, we, together and by association, dedicate our life and work to God, who alone guarantees the fulfillment of our Lasallian dream.
