WEEK 7 TERM 1 Commencing Monday 9th March 2020

As we enter the seventh week of the term, we reflect with thanks on an extremely wet Week 6 that saw in excess of 110mm of rain dumped on our township in just over 30 hours, which certainly has helped to curtail the drought conditions we have endured for so long! Whilst this weather presented some issues for our children in terms of play times, all children are to be congratulated for the way in which they dealt with the implementation of the wet weather policy at school. Aside from the rain, there were many highlights last week including the hosting of our annual K-2 Theme Day. Our students all immersed themselves in the fun and learning opportunities of the day which was wonderful to see. Thanks is extended to the families who assisted their children with costumes to be a part of the day. A range of photos from the event appear later in the newsletter and will also be available on our website in the coming days. Last week also saw the distribution of an Expression Of Interest note for our Sunrice Festival Parade Float. As always, the school will again submit a float for the iconic Leeton event, with special thanks to Greg and Alison De Paoli for again arranging the truck for the parade. If you wish for your child to be included in the event, please return to the expression of interest note as soon as possible. We are looking forward to another wonderful Parkview PS Float in the 2020 Parade! The new week promised to be a very busy one with a number of representative opportunities for students in our school community. These experiences are outlined in greater detail later in the newsletter. There is much to consider as we enter Week 7 of the term, please consider the content of today’s newsletter carefully as you plan for the coming weeks: COVID 19 The NSW Department of Education is working closely with the NSW Ministry of Health in response to the unfolding international COVID-19 (formerly referred to as Novel Coronavirus) situation. We are following to the letter all directions of the Department of Education and ask community members to read the following information. Further travel restrictions Effective of 5 March 2020, the Federal Government has issued updated advice on travel restrictions on foreign nationals (excluding permanent residents of Australia) coming to Australia from the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Current advice from the NSW Government for parents and affected staff is:

Any student or staff member who has left, or transited through mainland China since 1 February, Iran since 1 March or

the Republic of Korea (South Korea) since 5 March, is excluded from child care services, school or work for 14 days from

the date they left mainland China, Iran or the Republic of Korea (South Korea).

Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return.

Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed case.

Students and staff who have returned to Australia and have shown no symptoms during the 14-day self-isolation period are able to return to child care services, school or work. The NSW Ministry of Health has processes to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the NSW Ministry of Health. Consistent with current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with the NSW Department of Education’s current practice, if any student becomes unwell, the school will implement infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropriate. Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading respiratory infections. Parents and caregivers are asked to promote good hygiene, including handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease. The NSW Ministry of Health has advice and resources about COVID-19 in English, Chinese and other languages.

The NSW Department of Education will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation and provide parents and caregivers with updated information about the virus. Telephone Interpreter Service If you need further information please call your school principal. If you need an interpreter to assist you with your enquiry please call the Telephone Interpreter Service on 131 450 and ask for an interpreter in your language. This service will be free of charge to you.

Attendance As previously communicated to our community, in line with the Premier’s Priorities for Public Schools across NSW, our school has further increased its focus upon student attendance in 2020. Our aim for all students is to attend at 92% or greater. Students whose attendance has fallen below the 80% mark will receive written notification of this today to ensure parents and carers are aware of the situation, and where appropriate, an attendance plan will be developed. We thank everyone in our community for your assistance with improving attendance in our school. Parking and School Pick Up and Drop Off The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools. You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road

never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous

always take extra care in 40km school zones

follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible

park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate

never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk

never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm

model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child

always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.
