Acting Headteacher’s Message

It was a privilege to witness our students taking part in a variety of activities in honour of Remembrance Day. Their conduct, respect and deeply reflective conversations during the day paid a fitting tribute. The remembrance display in our main reception that features poppies with a message of thanks and reflection created by each student, has received warm feedback from visitors.

Congratulations to our Year 11 students who participated in the World of Work event held at the CASA hotel. The event, that gave students the ‘real world’ experience of applying and interviewing for a virtual job will benefit them greatly in their future lives. Employers and CASA staff were delighted with the exemplary conduct of our students and were left with the highest regard for our school and the community we serve.

I wish to thank all members of our community for supporting the school during the torrential rain last Friday and the subsequent disruption caused by flooding. I am pleased to report that following the late start, the learning and conduct of our young people continued to meet our expectations. May I take this opportunity to remind parents/carers the importance of students wearing a coat to school in wet and/or cold weather to support their health and wellbeing.

Very best wishes,

David Mills

Parkside Remembers

To mark one hundred years since the first Remembrance Day, Parkside students conducted a remembrance ceremony, as well as other activities, to honour those who fought in the armed forces, those who fell in battle, and those affected by war since 1918.

All students took part in a remembrance ceremony at 11.00am on 11 November, where a reading of ‘For the Fallen,’ by Robert Laurence Binyon, was followed by two minutes of silence and contemplation. Students who are members of local organisations, such as cadets and scouts, also had a ceremony to mark Remembrance Day and attended in the uniform of their organisation.

Alongside this, during history lessons last week, students also took part in activities focused on remembrance. All students discussed what remembrance is, the reasons for doing so, and the range of viewpoints that surround such events. Students were then invited to write their own personal message of thanks and remembrance on a poppy shaped piece of paper. These messages have been collated and turned into a wonderful display of cascading poppies in Parkside’s reception area by Mr Rowson, our Art Technician.

Assemblies this week have also followed the theme of remembrance, with Mr Hoben telling the students the story of Norman Crookes, a local man, who joined the RAF in 1941, and was instrumental in shooting down 4 enemy aircraft, receiving multiple honours for his actions. When he returned to civilian life, Norman became a teacher, eventually taking the headship of William Rhodes Secondary School in Chesterfield, later Parkside Community School. This illustrated to students that Remembrance Day is not just about remembering those who fell in past battles, but is also about acknowledging that our communities are full of inspirational people who have been affected by war.

It goes without saying that Parkside students approached the theme of remembrance with a great deal of maturity and respect, contributing their views articulately and behaving impeccably.

Well done to all.

Lest we forget

On Monday 11 November, all of our Year 11 students took park in a World of Work challenge at the CASA hotel. All students had applied for virtual jobs at CASA, completing real application forms and updating their CVs. On the day, all students took part in a variety of activities, including interview preparation, CV improvement sessions, employability sessions and the all-important mock interview. Shortlisted students then took part in a second interview, and the winning candidate for each job role was announced – congratulations to Beth, Emily, Megan, Kaan, Kayne, Georgie and Tom!

Thank you to the extended careers team of Mrs Wigston, Mrs Clewes, Mr Gould, Mr Dearman and Mrs O’Sullivan for co-ordinating this event.
