Jazmin Garcia

With summer upon us, Therapeutic Recreation Services is excited to welcome our newest staff

members. Lauren Council filled our Recreation Specialist vacancy upon Andrea Esposito's resignation. In

addition, we have six new Recreation Leaders and two summer interns, which I'm sure you will all meet very

soon. Lastly, please see page 19 For Jessica Battaglia's final farewell. We are hoping to hire Jessica's

replacement very soon.

Lauren attended college at

California State University,

Chico where she earned her

Bachelor of Science in

Recreation Administration

with a double option in

Community Programming

and Therapeutic Recreation. During her

time at Chico, Lauren volunteered for

Community Action Volunteers for Education

where she worked with seniors, veterans,

individuals with disabilities, and youth at the

Boys and Girls Club. In Fall 2013, Lauren

completed an internship with TRS. She most

recently worked for Hayward Area Recreation

and Park District with adults with

developmental disabilities.

Sarah is from Eastern

Washington University, where

she is completing her degree

in Therapeutic Recreation. She

enjoys being outdoors ,

camping, kayaking, traveling,

and volunteering. This

summer Sarah looks forward to meeting new

people, expanding her knowledge of

recreational therapy and, most importantly,

having fun!

Lacey is a San Diego native.

She began her internship with

TRS in April. She attends

California State University,

East Bay, where she is

earning her Recreation

Therapy degree. You can

find Lacey at the World Beat Center learning

to play African drums in her free time.

Lacey Williams

Jazmin comes to us from the Adaptive

Sports and Recreation Association,

where she helped run recreation

programs for people with physical

disabilities.

Jessica is a former intern who recently

returned to us from Australia, where

she developed a therapeutic recreation

program for people with Cerebral Palsy.

Daniel learned about TRS while

Running an adaptive sailing program

for Mission Bay Aquatics Center last

year during Camp at the Bay. He

believes that “no one should ever be

bored.”

Mylissa is a Recreation and Tourism

major with a passion for including

people with special needs in the

community. She is very excited to join

the team!

A former intern and Sea World

employee, Monica continued to

volunteer with us until she was hired as

one of our Recreation Leaders. She

loves anime and attends Comic Con

every year dressed as Sailor Moon.

Joel comes to us with an extensive

background in program planning and

volunteering. He is very energetic and

always has a smile on his face!

NOR COLON Nor’s start with

TRS began in

October 2012 at

Lake Miramar

after he borrowed

an air pump from Tandem. Since then, Nor has

volunteered with almost every one of our groups.

Nor’s passions include reading, hiking, running,

biking, tennis, sailing, photography, movies,

sunsets, and traveling (36 countries and

counting). Nor is currently retired from the

United States Marine Corps where he served as a

Supply Officer and Latin America Foreign Area

Officer. His educational achievements include

earning a B.A. degree in Political Science from

Fordham University and an M.A. in International

Relations from the University of San Diego. He

grew up in Bronx, New York and currently

resides in beautiful San Diego with two lovely

daughters, Megan and Alison, who also volunteer

with TRS.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

A WORD FROM OUR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

I am so excited to begin this new journey as your volunteer coordinator!

During my time with TRS, I have led programs for Adaptive Sports, People in

Recovery, Leisure Seekers, and Young Adults. Thank you for your patience,

support, and encouragement as I transition into this new role. The time and

commitment you give to TRS is always appreciated and I look forward to working with each

of you! Please contact me with any questions or for additional information.

ISAMAR CASTRO Isamar first heard about TRS

through her Disability in

Society class at San Diego

State University in Fall 2012.

She volunteered for the “Best

of the West” Wheelchair

Rugby tournament and had

such a great time that she

wanted to get involved with our

other programs. She became an

official TRS volunteer in September 2013 and

since then has grown to love working with

KidZone participants and Independent Club

members. In her free time, she likes to go to the

movies, catch up on her favorite shows like The

Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, explore the

best pizza places in San Diego, and hangout with

friends and family. Isamar will graduate from

SDSU later this year, making her the first person

in her family to earn a college degree! She plans

to continue volunteering post-graduation.

We are grateful for all of our wonderful volunteers who dedicate so much time and energy to help make our programs possible. Check out this quarter’s “Top Bananas,” exceptional volunteers who rise above and beyond their call of duty. Please congratulate them if you see them at programs.

with any of the listed activities and to sign-up for an orientation.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the volunteer

recognition night a success! An extra special thanks to Disabled

Services Advisory Council for funding this memorable event.

We had over 50 volunteers and their guests attend the jungle

themed event. All volunteers went home with a gift bag as a

token of our appreciation.

In 2013, TRS volunteers logged over 14,000 hours. A special

shout out to our top five volunteers: Chris Roze with 800 hours,

Anna Imthurn with 300, Adel Raffed with 230, Nor Colon with

150, and Brooke Scholl with 110. Thank you to these generous

individuals and all of our other volunteers for their tireless efforts

DSAC CORNER/DONOR APPRECIATION

Disabled Services Advisory Council, Inc. (DSAC) is a non-profit advisory organization to Therapeutic

Recreation Services. Their purpose is to offer support and promotion of quality activities, act as a liaison

between the department and the community at-large, administer contract programs for persons with

disabilities, and provide public relations and fundraising support. The Board is made up of volunteer

members from various agencies that serve persons with disabilities, parents, businesspersons, advocates,

and other interested persons. Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday evening of each month, at 6:00

p.m. in Room 1 at the War Memorial Building. There are no meetings in July and August. Please call

Kristi Fenick at (619) 525-8247 for more information. Agendas and minutes are posted in Room 6 at the

War Memorial Building.

DONOR APPRECIATION

DSAC and TRS are so appreciative of individual and agency donations. With this financial

assistance, we are able to continue to provide quality programming and improve the lives of

individuals with disabilities through recreation.

Torrey Pines Kiwanis (TPK) and MADCAPS have been long time

supporters of Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) and Disabled Services

Advisory Council, Inc. (DSAC). Since 1993, TPK has financially assisted

Camp at the Bay, allowing many campers with disabilities the opportunity

to experience jet skiing, kayaking and sailing, amongst other adaptive water

and land activities. The Leisure Seekers group has also benefitted from

TPK's generosity over the years, with donations to assist with Social

Connection monthly dinners, softball league and annual Luau. On March

21, 2014, TPK presented DSAC with a $25,000 check (see presentation

photo with Kristi Fenick, Peter Ballantyne, Meagan Nunez and Julie

Gregg), allowing TRS to continue to provide affordable recreational, social

and physical fitness programs to over 50,000 children and adults with disabilities annually.

MADCAPS is a mother-daughter philanthropic group. TRS is

lucky enough to have their 9th grade girls doing volunteer service

with us. You will find these girls helping out and socializing with

our participants at camp and various teen activities during the

summer and throughout the year. In addition to their volunteer

service, MADCAPS generously donated $9,828 this year. These

funds will be utilized for scholarships/camperships, adaptive

equipment and assist with bus transportation costs for out of town

trips.

Thank you Torrey Pines Kiwanis and MADCAPS for believing in Therapeutic Recreation Services

mission and assisting us in improving the lives of all San Diegans, with and without disabilities.

Please contact Kristi Fenick at [email protected] or (619) 533-6333 for

sponsorship and/or donation inquiries. All donations to DSAC are tax deductible.

IT IS TIME TO SAY GOOD BYE! Wow this has been an incredible

journey! When I first began working my

first summer job for the City at the age

of 16, as an Aquatic Aide, working in

the dark, dingy, locker room at the

Mission Beach Plunge, little did I realize I would

complete my career here 44 years later.

In May 1977, after 6 years working in Aquatics, moving

from the Plunge to teaching swimming at Bud Kearney

pool, then to portable pools, I completed my internship, and graduated from San Diego State

University with a degree in Recreation Administration, emphasis in Rehabilitation. I transferred

to the young new section in the Department, now known as Therapeutic Recreation Services,

formally Disabled Services Program and became a nationally certified Recreation Therapist,

CTRS. As a Recreation Leader II/Recreation Specialist, I led activities for adults with

behavioral health disorders, then for children and teens with various disabilities. I am most

proud to have been instrumental in developing nationally recognized inclusion support policies

to welcome children with special needs so they could participate in community recreation

activities along with their peers. I assisted other local cities to create and incorporate their

inclusion policies into their program.

My experience with the people in the Park & Recreation

Department- staff, as well as, participants and their families

has helped me become the person that I am today and has

been a great influence for my family. My children grew up

participating in the program, which helped them develop an

understanding of acceptance, as well as, experience for their

1st job. Three of my four sons began their career working

for Aquatics, and three of my four siblings began working

for the department at a young age.

This time in my life is bittersweet – I am sad about leaving my Park and Recreation family, but

anxious about beginning new adventures. I have made some incredible friendships! I will miss

everyone, especially those I have meet at TRS, but I am sure I will be keeping in touch- I won’t

be able to stay away.

Now it is time to take the wonderful experience I have gained on a new journey, I will continue

to use my passion for this field to inspire people to realize the importance and joy of leisure and

recreation in their life, to include and accept everyone in their circle of play. I will live what I

teach, now that I have plenty of time for adventure and travel the world. Thank you everyone

for being part of my life!
