Causing Trouble

Back in 1776, something needed to change. It was bigger than taxation without representation. It was about oppressive forms of government. So Ben, and George, and Thomas stirred things up! Back in 1920, things needed to change. So Susan B, stirred up a kettle of trouble! And the US Congress passed the 19th amendment. Sometimes things just need to change.

Jesus shakes things up this Sunday. He brings a Good News message that’s bigger than one woman’s illness, though each suffering is incomparably important to Him. It’s about a religion created for joyful love that has been turned into a millstone. So Jesus stirs things up! Causes some trouble in the synagogue. Sometimes things just need to change.

We can’t count on this old world to change itself. Nor can we count on it’s wisdom. My thoughts are not your thoughts. Thankfully, Jesus has the power and the love and the will to change us from glory into glory. Then to send us into his world. There’s good ‘gettin’ in trouble and a bad. The good kind transforms pain and injustice into love and peace. Therein lives our hope! Thanks be to God Jesus is with us!

NEW BIRTH

We give thanks for the birth of

Charlotte Elizabeth Smith

Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Smith.

Earlier this summer, Lydia Johnson joined a small group from our diocese to travel to Brownsville and McAllen, TX to see first hand what is happen-ing with asylum seekers at our borders. Our parish generously donated funding and supplies for the trip, including “busy boxes” for children, coloring items, baby wipes and other practical needs. Our diocesan team fed over 1,000 people while there. Want to hear more about the trip and what are the on going needs at the bor-der? Join Lydia on Sunday, August 25th at 9am in the parlor for coffee, discus-sion, prayer and plenty of time to an-

swer questions. Child care provided. Contact Lydia for more information at [email protected] or 251-342-8521.

Stewardship Of Our Children Online - Playing Defense in an Offensive World

Join us to learn how to protect our children from online predators!

Sept. 24. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. Childcare provided.

Online predators have likely tried to contact your children. Their relent-less tactics work more often than we’re aware. Children, eager to be pop-ular, fall prey to their flattery and then their traps. Sean Costello is the Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. He serves as the Project Safe Child coordinator and has prosecuted a

number of child exploitation cases in our area. He is familiar with the predator's tac-tics and will teach parents and children what to be aware of when interacting online. Sean is a graduate of St Paul’s School, Georgetown University, and the University of Alabama School of Law.

We were very pleased at the response from so many in updating their infor-mation. However, it has been brought to our attention that many of you are listed in the new Parish Directory without a phone number. St. Paul’s errs on the side of caution and only prints landlines unless we have permission from you to print your cell numbers.

An addendum sheet will be printed in the near future for everyone who has de-cided they would like a cell numbers listed. This addition will continue in fu-ture directories unless we are advised otherwise.

Again, we greatly appreciate the effort by all of you in making our records up to date and efficient.

Join the EYC for Worship on the Water at Beckwith on Saturday, August 24th. We will take buses from the church to camp. We plan to leave around noon on Saturday and return by 6pm. This event is free, but stu-dents should bring a towel, bathing suit, sun screen, bug spray, and water bottle. Students may also bring a paddle board or kayak, but please coordinate with Rev. Ben Rockwell to make sure we have adequate space

([email protected] or 251-342-8521). We will also col-lect school supplies for students affected by Hurricane Mi-chael in the Panama City area. Donations of backpacks, pencils, crayons, markers, glue, colored pencils, pencil box-es, pens, binders, folders, highlighters, etc. would be most appreciated! This event is open to all students in the 6th through 12th grades. Please sign up by e-mailing [email protected], or contacting the church office at 251-342-8521.

Some Pretty Neat Upcoming Classes!

This fall we have some pretty interesting classes coming up. They are:

Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today’s Families. This highly regarded book presents some practical steps

toward awakening a vibrant faith in our children and grandchildren. More than a guide to try to make our kids be-

have better, it's a curriculum that dares to encourage a dynamic faith between children and the living God. Partici-

pants will receive a book and participant worksheets for this 6 week study. Classes will be held on Sundays at 4:30

p.m., starting September 22nd. Led by Rob and Tina Hinckle. The Way of Love. The Way of Love is a nine week study on developing a personal rule of life. When we think

about rule of life, we’re thinking about daily practices which can awaken our spirits to the presence of Christ. A rule

of life is practiced by almost all classical monastic orders, but this is a rule of life that will fit you. A study guide

suggesting daily activities will guide conversation and feedback during weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings. Led

by Dr. Charles Rodning and the Rev. Ben Rockwell. One nine week class is now full, but if we have enough inter-

est and a willing leader, we’ll open another.

What Does My Church Do? This is a practical class about St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. It will meet Sunday morn-

ings, and discuss every aspect of the church in which you might be interested. Topics include: the various ministries

of the church to children, teens, adults and seniors, how to get involved, the church’s many outreach missions, or-

ganizations within the church like guilds, service offices, lay readers chalice bearers, and tours of our facilities.

There will be a class about our history, a class on our church windows, how we form a budget, what’s going on in

the larger diocese and in our national church, and how does the Anglican Communion work? This class will be led

by the rector on Sunday mornings and is open to all.

Adult Confirmation. This is the class that prepares adults for full service opportunities in the life of the Episcopal

Church. We study our liturgy, heritage, how we interpret Holy Scripture, the Prayer Book, and the apostolic line of

succession.

Women’s Bible Study - Do you feel that the ability to hear God's voice is for other people and not for you? Is it

only for people who lived in Biblical times? Where ever you are in your spiritual walk, God will find a way to

speak to you in a way you will understand. Become acquainted with the Voice that has spoken from a fire and a

cloud, with visible signs and an invisible Spirit, through a burning bush and burning hearts. Hear from some of the

most well known Christians in history about how God speaks to them, and discover for yourself how you can dis-

cern the voice of God. Meets on Tuesday nights at 7:00, led by Laura Johnson and Kelly Fountain.

EYC Bible Study - Welcome back! EYC Bible study will kick off Wednesday, August 21, at 6pm. All students 7th

through 12th grades are invited to join us for dinner, fellowship, and formation. We will meet in the EYC room

(YAB 202) and conclude by 7pm. Please let Margaret Cadden know if you plan to attend: mcad-

[email protected] or 251-610-6696.

Men’s Bible Study Group - All men are welcome to come and enjoy discussion, fellowship, and coffee with sweet

rolls. On the first Tuesday of each month there is a meeting with a full breakfast in the Parish Hall.

New Testament Class - The New Testament Class will resume its study of John on Sunday morning, September 8,

with Chapter 3. They will meet in the library conference room.
