THE WORSHIP OF GOD

*Call to Worship

One: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings.

All: Ascribe to the Lord, glory and strength.

One: Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name.

All: Worship the Lord in holy splendor.

One: The voice of the Lord is over the waters,

All: The God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty

One: Christians, what do we believe as Cumberland Presbyterians?

All: We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and

earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried;

He descended to the grave. The third day He arose from the

dead. He ascended into heaven, where He shall sit at the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from where He shall judge

the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

universal church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the everlasting life.

“Down By the Jordan” Biblical Reference: Luke 3:1-22

Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptizing,

Preaching a message the people found bold and surprising:

"God will forgive! Show that you'll change how you live!

Surely God's new day is rising!"

There by the river, the crowd came with great expectation:

"Are you God's Chosen One, sent here to rescue our nation?"

"No!" John replied. "He who is mightier than I

Judges and offers salvation."

Jesus, you went to be baptized along with the others,

Taking your place among sinners, God's lost sons and daughters.

Then with great love, God's Spirit came as a dove!

Your work began in those waters.

Here in the Church, we are baptized and filled with God's Spirit.

Freed and forgiven, we're welcomed with joy! Can you hear it?

This is God's sign! This is how God says, "You're mine!"

Let's take the good news and share it!

The Reading Of The Word

Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 43:1-7

“Fear not…I am with thee”

But now, this is what the LORD says—

he who created you, Jacob,

he who formed you, Israel:

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;

I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters,

I will be with you;

and when you pass through the rivers,

they will not sweep over you.

When you walk through the fire,

you will not be burned;

the flames will not set you ablaze. 3 For I am the LORD your God,

the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

I give Egypt for your ransom,

Cush and Seba in your stead. 4 Since you are precious and honored in my sight,

New Testament Lesson Acts 8:14-17

“Baptized through the Holy Spirit”

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word

of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they

prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply

been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed

their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

*Gospel Lesson Luke 3:15-22

“The Messiah will baptize with the Holy Spirit”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their

hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I

baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the

straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with

the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his

threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the

chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other words John exhorted

the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to

Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as

he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him

in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my

Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

“When Jesus Came To Jordan”

When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John,

he did not come for pardon. but as God's Holy One.

He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins,

to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins.

He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss,

for us and our salvation to die upon the cross.

So when the Dove descended on him, the Holy One,

the hidden years had ended, the age of grace begun.

DENOMINATION DAY CELEBRATION

We are hosting the Presbytery of East Tennessee service this year on

Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 3:00pm. Our CPWM is providing the meal to

follow the Denonimation Day program. Cost will be $7.00. Please sign the

sheet in the narthex if you are planning to attend and there will also be a

sign-up sheet if you can provide a dessert. There will be a Presbytery choir

composed of choir members from various churches in the Presbytery.

Rehearsals will be today, January 10 at 3:00pm and on Sunday, January 24

at 3:00pm.
