The Parish Photo Directories have arrived! All families that were photographed should stop by the table after Mass to pickup their free copy. The votes are in! By a 164-129 vote, the preferred location for the Our Lady of Guadalupe statue is #2 - the garden setting. The next step is to determine the availability of donated labor and materials in order to estimate our fundraising goal. We start this process at the Hispanic Committee meeting on Monday, June 20 at 7:00pm. English speakers that would like to share information or contribute are encouraged to speak with Fr. Jose Maria, a bilingual member of the Parish Council, Maintenance Committee or Hispanic Committee member. Their names and contact information can be found on the bulletin board. Let’s help restock the shelves at Lift-Up! From now through July 7 please drop donations of canned food, dry goods, cleaning supplies, baby food/formula/diapers and personal hygiene products in the Lift-Up collection box in the entryway. The results of your generosity will be delivered to Lift-Up on July 8 by some of our middle and high school students who are invited to lend a helping hand there that day. Thank you for helping those in need in the Rifle community! 2017 Confirmation candidates are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for service hours. Students interested in helping should contact Sophie Messaros (625- 3891 x107, [email protected]), as a permission slip signed by your parent is needed. 30 teens from St. Mary will attend the Steubenville Youth Conference next Friday-Sunday Please pray for them, and their chaperones, that they may come to experience a relationship with Christ that can radically transform everything in their lives. Our deepest gratitude to the Knights of Columbus for the Fish Fry fundraisers and the Parish Bazaar awarding scholarships and underwriting part of the bus cost! The Peter’s Pence collection is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with Catholics all over the world to support the charitable works of Pope Francis as he reaches out to those suffering the effects of war and violence, natural disasters, and religious persecution. The collection will be taken up on July 25/26. The next baptismal preparation class in Spanish will be offered on Friday, July 8 at 7:00pm. All parents and godparents need to attend this class. Contact the Parish Office if the class is needed in English. Outside interests are currently funding an effort to get Physician-Assisted Suicide laws added to our ballots here in Colorado. To do so they are paying people to collect signatures throughout the summer. We need everyone to know they should not sign any petition that would put physician-assisted suicide on the ballot in November. Physician-assisted suicide is a dangerous proposition that we should avoid. To learn more about this issue visit archden.org/life. XII ORDINARY SUNDAY JUNE 19, 2016 761 BIRCH AVE. — P.O. MASS INTENTIONS

“Why does Jesus want to know what people think about him? Why does he want to know what his disciples think about

him? Jesus wants his disciples to become aware of what is hidden in their own minds and hearts and to give voice to their

conviction. At the same time, however, he knows that the judgment they will express will not be theirs alone,

because it will reveal what God has poured into their hearts by the grace of faith. This is what faith is all about!

It is the response of the rational and free human person to the word of the living God. “

THE HOLY FATHER’S

PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JUNE

WHO DO YOU SAY? In today’s Gospel Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Luke 9:20). Only Peter has the courage to state outright that Jesus is the Messiah—the anointed one—of God. Jesus’ question is one that we have to answer at some point for ourselves if we are to truly live as his disciples today. It is easy to avoid a direct answer, to rely on what someone else has said about Jesus, or just to follow the rules and say the right prayers for years on end, without ever stopping to face this question squarely. Marianne lives in a small-town parish. She says she never thought this question was for her until one day it came up in a Bible study group. “I’d read or heard this passage so many times before, but on this particular day it was as if I were hearing it for the very first time. As I drove home, I knew deep in my heart that I had to acknowledge Jesus as the one whom God had sent into this world for me.” And, she continued, “I knew that if I accepted Jesus as the Lord of my life, there would be consequences!” This started Marianne on a new path. She found a wise and experienced spiritual director and began reviewing her life. “I used to tease one of my friends who wore a ‘What would Jesus do?’ bracelet,” she said, “but suddenly I knew that this is a question that I’ll be asking myself all the time now.” Her life’s challenges haven’t vanished overnight: Marianne cares for her elderly mother and copes with diabetes, but she says, “I trust in God much more these days, and God’s blessing is that I’m so much more openhearted and openhanded with other people than ever before.” Living Stewardship Now Is Jesus the center of your life? If not, why not?

Elisha is summoned to follow the prophet Elijah and to succeed him. Jesus insists that those who follow him must abandon all material or psychological securities, walking ever forward without looking back. It is the Lord alone who is to hold fast our lot. Paul distinguishes between true freedom and license.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today, as he often does, Luke portrays Jesus “praying in solitude” (Luke 9:18). The Jubilee Year of Mercy invites us to rediscover the value of silence as the prayerful setting in which to reflect on the ways in which God’s mercy transforms our lives, in order to make mercy the heart of our own lifestyle. But in a line that sounds odd, Jesus “rebuked” his disciples “and directed them not to tell anyone” (9:20–21) after they professed their faith in Jesus as “the Christ of God” (9:20). Jesus challenges us also to profess our faith not by what we say, but by what we do: take up our own cross daily (9:23) and “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). Our gratitude for God’s mercy toward us should make us instruments of God’s mercy toward all. Then, as Zechariah prophesies in today’s first reading, the fountain of God’s mercy will open to purify the whole world from the sin and selfishness that cause suffering and sorrow to so many (Zechariah 13:1).

Spiritual Works of Mercy (Booklet)

Most Christians want to live an active faith yet feel perplexed about how to do so. The seven interconnected "spiritual works of mercy" come to our aid: counseling the doubtful; comforting the ignorant; admonishing sinners; comforting the afflicted; forgiving offenses; bearing wrongs patiently; and praying for the living and the dead. Through such acts of mercy we can respond fully to God's goodness towards us, involving conversion of our interior life: such acts are truly God's acts of mercy; we become mere human agents for God to alleviate people's unhappiness.
