This has been my third year as Chairman of the Parish Council and the variety of issues which comes to the debating table never ceases to amaze me. Many of these present challenges which require careful consider-ation prior to any deci-sions being made and as
Chairman it is my role to ensure that all opinions are heard. This is not an easy task but with the co-operation of all my fellow Councillors I feel that we have been able to move for-ward in a business like way during the last twelve months.
Once again, the Resource Centre has occupied much of our time but I am pleased to say that we are optimistic about the outcome in our quest for funding. Unfortunately the processes involved are not quick and easy, but when we are hoping for a contribution in excess of £500,000 we should not expect them to be. We have successfully completed Stage 1 and 2 of the funding application and are now in the midst of putting together the Stage 3 bid. The results of this are likely to be known by the end of 2016 and I am hopeful that this time next year we will have started the construc-tion of what will be a super facility for Brinsworth.
The Community Hall and Pavilion have both been well used during the last year and this provides a good foundation on which to build the custom for the new centre. Our caretak-ers have worked tirelessly to keep the buildings clean and tidy and their efforts have helped to increase the number of users.
It seems that some things are never completely solved and as I have said before, my two pet hates are the amount of litter and the amount of dog fouling which blights the village. Both can be classed as anti-social behaviour and both are unneces-sary. Our efforts to address the litter problem have contin-ued unabated and the additional cost of employing our own litter picker has proved to be money well spent. In addition, the help of volunteer ‘litter busters’ has been very welcome and much appreciated. We are doing what we can to keep Brinsworth clean and tidy but it could be so much better if everybody played a small part bynotdroppinglitterinthefirst place and for residents to just maintain the area outside their own homes.
Similarly with dog fouling, despite our appeals to all dog owners to act responsibly and pick up the mess, there are still some who seem to think this does not apply to them. Please, please do your bit and help keep Brinsworth clean.
The attempts to improve our environment, and the place where we live, have continued during the last year and will do so into the future. It should be important to us all and as a Parish Council we will ensure that we do our best to keep it uppermost in peoples’ minds.
Brinsworth Parish Council Annual Report 2016The hanging baskets were again a success this year and the delightful blooms added lovely colour to Brinsworth Lane and the main shopping area. We are grateful to Paul France and his pupils at Brinsworth Academy for their hard work in planting the baskets and to our own Attendants for their constant watering during the summer months.
For those of you who do not realise the full extent of our responsibilities, we manage Brinsworth Playing Fields, with all its facilities (bowling green, children’s play area, three football pitches and a multi-use games area); the Millenni-um Park at the top end of Orchard Way, with children’s play area and skate park; the Howarth Road children’s play area and the multi-use games area; and the common land on St George’s Drive. These all require daily maintenance and the Attendants have done a sterling job in keeping them safe, clean and tidy during the last twelve months. Improvement work on the paths and playgrounds has also taken place as partofouraimtoprovidefirstclassamenitiesfortheresi-dents of Brinsworth.
The houses on the new Field View estate are now all com-pletebuttheanti-socialbehaviourontheplayingfieldsandthe path to the rear of Sunnybank Crescent is still a major concern for residents. The Parish Council has tried to help by relocating some seats and benches away from the vicinity of their properties and by agreeing to pay for a barrier at the end of the path in order to deter motorbikes and quad bikes from using it as a race track.
The programme of events in Brinsworth is now well established in the calendar and they were all very well attended, which ensured their success. The Village Fete in July was again blessed with good weather and this result-ed in thousands enjoying the various stalls and attractions. Similarly, thebonfireandfireworkdisplaywas, asusual, abrilliant occasion and witnessed by people from near and far. The Remembrance Sunday Service at the War Memorial in St George’s Churchyard had the highest attendance ever and the numbers paying their respect was a credit to the Brinsworth Community. Once again the Civic Carol Service was attended by many people and the entertainment provided by Maltby Welfare Band was thoroughly enjoyable. A new venture this yearwastheChristmasDanceandforafirstattempt, thetakeupwasencouraging,sufficienttotryitagainin2016.

The Parish Council has always been supportive of the Friends of St George’s Churchyard, particularly as they are doing so much to improve what was, until a few years ago, an area thatwasnot regularlymaintainedanddidnot reflectwellon Brinsworth as a burial ground. I am very pleased to report that the situation is now much very different and the latest improvement, to which the Parish Council made a contribu-tion of £1,500, is the paved area just inside the entrance.
In October we were pleased to welcome Dr Alan Billings, the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, to a Parish Council meeting. He explained that his role is to hold the Police to account and he outlined the key aspects of the
Police and Crime Plan 2015/2016. He went on to describe thechangesthatwilloccurinthenextfiveyears, withtheaim of making people feel safe in their homes. Despite thereduction inavailableresourceshewasconfidentthat improvements will occur in the way in which policing is carried out.
The Brinsworth Newsletter is a publication which we hope you feel is worth the time and effort that goes into it. Over the last twelve months we have tried to keep local residents informed of the issues that might have an impact on you, but as I have said before, it is an opportunity to let others know of your achievements, awards or just interesting facts. Unfortunately not many articles of this nature have been forthcoming, but we continue to live in hope. If you have any comments to make we would be pleased to receive them, for without your feedback we do not know if it meets expectations.
Finally, the success or otherwise of the Parish Council is very much dependent upon the efforts and commitment of its Councillors and staff. As Chairman I would like to record the factthat inbothcasestheCouncilhaspeoplewhofitthebillperfectly.Mythanksgotoallofthemforfulfillingtheirrolesinamannerwhichhascontributedsosignificantlytothe work of the Parish Council during the last year.
MalcolmHannan Chairman Brinsworth Parish Council
Residents Letters . . .Dear Sir,
I wanted to drop a note through about this - I guess I maynotbethefirsttoraisethis subject with you though.
On the one hand, it’s great that we’ll soon have the choice to access Virgin’s services here in Brinsworth. On the other hand, whether we choose to take them up on their services or not, we all have no choice but to en-dure the inconvenience and mess left behind by the teams who have dug the trenches and installed the pipes for the cables.
As a resident of Brinsworth for over 25 years, I have never seen the place - particularly the roads - look-ing so shabby. There’s still piles of unswept debris and dust everywhere, the grates are half full of rubble where it was easier for the work-men to put it rather than take it away, the tarmac repairs made to the foot-paths are poor at best and atrocious at worst. There’s ‘temporary’ repairs every 25 yards, holes everywhere being dug up, filled in &dug up again and the whole village has been left in a reallymessy, filthystate.
I dread to think how many hours of inconvenience have been caused to the residents of Brinsworth. Extra car washing, extra window washing, extra hoovering, extra sweeping - you name it, we’ve had to do extra of it to look after the environment we live in.
I’m a (relatively) young bloke and understand there are more important things in the world going on. But seeing elderly ladies sweeping the STREET (not the pavement, the STREET) outside their homes to try and bring it back to how it was before Comex/Redhill/Virgin arrived was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
What have I seen from the council? Erm, nothing. Not a
road sweeper, not a man with a brush, not even a man with a clipboard. Oh, I have seen the usual bloke from Street-pride with the white spray can circling potholes so his Streetpride pals can come along, chuck a shovel full of tarmac in and professionally finish the repair - byhittingit with the back of their shov-el!! I’m sorry, has ‘pride’ tak-en on a new meaning since I left school? Hitting a pile of hastily deposited tarmac with the back of a shovel isn’t ‘pride’ - they should rename that part of the Council ‘Streetbodge’ if they don’t want the Trades Descriptions act to come under threat.
Now I know that’s a bit of a tangent from the main point I raise but all of this adds up - Brinsworth’s roads and pavements are a mess, they’re getting worse not better and to be polite, it’s just not on.
Can you please tell me what BPC, Streetbodge and the Council are doing to get the people who created all the mess in Brinsworth to tidy up and put things back to how they were before they started. I want to go to the heads of the businesses responsible for the mess to see what they have to say. Before I do that though, I wanted to get the local council’s opinion - after all, you’re the ones we all trust (and pay) to keep our environment a green an pleasant one. Well, you know what I mean.
Look forward to hearing back soon&thanksinadvance.

Dear Sir,
After reading the Brinsworth News, I feel I must let you know that I disagree with your idea of not having a bonfireonBonfireNight.
I am sure that a lot of chil-dren and adults will miss the one night of the year to see thefirebeinglitandthentoseethefireworks.
Myself, my children and grandchildren, have over the years, been able to en-joy them. It just seems to be something else that’s disap-pearing, what will it be next?
Perhaps the kick ball area because, as it’s getting lighter at night, the kids will be playing out longer and the noise will disturb the houses that have only just been built.
So, although I know that there’s a lot of hooligans out there, I also know there are many normal kids who just want somewhere to play and let off steam.
Please have a rethink regardingthebonfire.

Council ReplyHello Dave,
Your email has been forwarded to us as Borough Councillors to investigate.
We have received a number of complaints regarding this matter and are trying to work with the contractors in order for them to work in a clean and tidy manner. Whilst we appreciate it is intrusive work, we are mindful of the debris left behind.
If you can give me your address then we will be only too pleased to take a look at your particular street. We can confirmthatwehavearrangedforroadsweeperstogooutand target the worst affected areas.
Kind regardsRMBC Cllr. Andrew Roddison
Parish Council ReplyDearConcernedResident,
The Parish Councillors have considered the content of your letterregardingthedecisionnottohaveabonfirethisyearand thank you for your comments.
Theyareawarethatthebonfirehasalwaysbeenpartofanenjoyable night and if the new houses on Field View had not been built then it is likely that it would have continued. How-ever, the risks involved are now much greater than they were and concerns have been expressed from an insurance point of view because of the proximity of the houses. The prevailing windblowsacrossthefieldintheirdirectionandtherefore the chance of sparks from the fire causing damage increasessignificantly.
When everything was taken into account it was decided not tohaveabonfirethisyear, althoughthefireworksdisplaywill still go ahead.
As far as your concerns about other activities being curtailed I can assure you that there are no plans for this to occur.
Once again, thank you for your feedback.ClerktotheCouncil

Brinsworth War MemorialsBrinsworth Parish Council has been working on a project to document the stories of the men from Brinsworth and Canklow who gave their lives for their Country in the First World War. There are 57 names on the War Memorial for 1914 -1918 which is tucked away within the grounds of St Georges Churchyard on Brinsworth Lane. It is passed unnoticed every day by hundreds of motorists but few people walk past it and fewer stop to enter the churchyard to read the names on the memorial.
Two of the soldiers named on the memorial are D Knapton and J Bridges.
David Knapton was born about 1895 in Rotherham. In the 1911 England Census he was working as a coal miner rope hand, liv-ing with his father and siblings at 69 Ellis Street, Canklow. His Mother was not present as she was living with her widowed Mother in Chapel Row, Higham, Barns-ley. The family were in Whiston during the 1901 England Census. David enlisted at Rotherham aged 21, he served at home with the 4th Battalion Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. He died on the 20 June 1918 aged 23 and is buried in St Georges Churchyard, Brinsworth.
John Bridges was the brother of Harry Bridges who sadly is also named on the memorial. John was born about 1893 in East-wood, Rotherham. In the 1901 England Census he is living in Eastwood with his parents and siblings, Harry being one of them. John served with the 5th Battal-ion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was discharged as physically unfit on the 8 November 1916.He died on the 16 February 1918 and is buried at Rotherham Moorgate Cemetery. There are 52 Commonwealth burials in Moor-
gateCemeteryfromWorldWarOne.TheCrossofSacrificeisat the main entrance to the Cemetery.
As the 100 year anniversary of The Battle of the Somme is commemorated this year it is sobering to learn that out of the 57 soldiers named on the Brinsworth and Canklow War Memorial 9 of them were killed in action on the 1 July 1916.Lest we Forget
Thank You All Again! On behalf of the Friends of St George’s Churchyard Group I would like to say THANK YOU to all those volunteers who helped on the last clean-up day. We now have this as an annual event and are very grateful for the assistance provided, particularly as it demonstrates why we have been officially recognised as a community which is helping to improve itself with schemes like this. The Churchyard is now a place which looks as though it is maintained and shows re-spect for those that are bur-ied there.
Work is still ongoing, any help is more than welcome and if you would like to join the Friends group contact Margaret Hughes on 01709 374500.

My name is Cheryl Jones, I left the Army in 2011 after serving 22 Years in the Army. I served in NI, Iraq, Afganistan, Bosnia, Cyprus and Germany. I loved every minute of it and I am proud to have served my country.
Since leaving the Services I have settled back into civil-ian life in Brinsworth and love the area. I have formed my own business and work from home.
I do miss the Army life and the comradeship between the soldiers which made me think, I can’t be the only Ex Veteran in Brinsworth, therefore, I would like to invite all Ex Veterans in the Brinsworth area to form a club, where we can have a few social outings, includ-ing bowling nights, walking, Sunday lunches or just meet up for a natter.
Brinsworth Ex Veterans ClubShould you have any ideas, then please for-ward your suggestions.
If you are interested in being part of this club, and are of any age from any of the services, then please contact me on 07580 041424 or 01709 377879 or email me at [email protected]
I look forward to hearing from you!

GOOD NEWS - We have successfully completed Stage 2 of the three stage application process to the Big Lottery Reaching Communi-ties Fund and are therefore still on track to secure over £500,000 towards the new building.
The key aspects of the bid are that it will create a ‘community hub’ catering for all residents and provide opportunities for differ-ent sections of the community to join in activities together, learn new skills and meet new friends. It will be a marvellous facility for Brinsworth and put us on a par with other villages that already have similar new centres.
If all goes according to plan we should hear if we have been award-ed the money by December 2016 and if so, the project is likely to commence early in 2017.
The latest plans can be seen here and, as usual, if you would like to knowmorejustcontacttheParishoffice.

Diabetes Week 12th-18th JuneJust about everyone has heard about diabetes and with 4 million people diagnosed in the UK, most of us know a friend or family member living
with the condition. And yet it’s still hugely misunderstood, and there are so many myths and misconceptions out there that this year, the theme is
Setting the Record Straight. Why not update your knowledge by visiting www.diabetes.org.uk
Here are just a few of the most common mythsMyth: Type 2 diabetes is a mild form of diabetes
There is no such thing as mild diabetes. All diabetes is serious and, if not properly controlled, can lead to serious complications.
Myth: People with diabetes cannot have sugarHaving diabetes does not mean you have to have a sugar-free diet.
People with diabetes should follow a healthy balanced diet – that is low in fat, salt and sugar. You should still be able to enjoy a wide
variety of foods, including some with sugar.Myth: People with diabetes can’t eat grapes, mangoes or bananasPeople sometimes think that if they have diabetes they can’t eat grapes
and bananas as they taste sweet. But if you eat a diet that includes these fruits, you can still achieve good blood glucose control. In fact, grapes and
bananas, like all fruit, make a very healthy choice.Myth: People with diabetes are more likely to get colds
and other illnessesNot true. While there is some medical research that may suggest peoplewith diabetes are at higher risk of developing illnesses, there’s nothing to
prove this conclusively. But there are certain illnesses that are more common in people with diabetes, and diabetes may also alter the course
of an illness – e.g., a person with diabetes may become more unwell or be unwell for longer than a person without diabetes.
Myth: People with diabetes can’t play sportPeople with diabetes are encouraged to exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Keeping active can help reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease. However, there may be some
considerations to take into account before taking up a new exercise regime. Talk to your healthcare team for more information.

Around the middle of February this year I received a phone call from the Lord Lieutenant’sOfficeinformingmethatIhad been nominated to attend the Queens Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
I was told that whilst the name of the person who had made the nomi-nation had to remain anonymous the reason for the nomination was to recognise over thirty years’ service to my Community through the Fire Service, as a School Governor, Parish Councillor and a Borough Councillor. And so it was with a feeling of great pride that myself and my wife went down to London on the 19th May 2016.
We were fortunate to have good weather and whilst we didn’t actually get
to speak with the Royal Family, the experience of walking through the Palace and into the Queens “back garden” for tea and sandwiches and being literally just feet away from the Queen and Prince Phillip ensured that the day will be one that stays with us for a long time to come. AlanBuckley.
Help Us Grow Your Community
At your disposal are the Community Hall and Pavilion Hall

may have throughout the year, whether starting a club on a weekly basis,
a surprise birthday party, wedding, anniversary or get together.
Disco lights can be provided in the Community Hall for your use without
additional cost. Unfortunately we do not have a DJ so you would have to
provide one yourself.
The kitchens in both halls are fully equipped and comply with all relevant
health and safety regulations.
They are open 7 days a week from 9am. Free parking for 25-30 cars.
Disabled access, male and femaledisabled toilets.

for viewing, availability and prices.
Stepping into the Garden at Buckingham Palace
Following the article which appeared in the last news-letter there were a lot of you who voiced your opinions about opening up the access from Wood Lane to Europa Way. Everybody was in favour of the proposal, with the majority preferring two way access. However, if two way traffic is not possible then all would accept one way as an alternative, albeit that some would prefer it to be out of Brinsworth and some would prefer it coming into Brinsworth.
As a result of your feedback the Parish Council has met with a Senior Engineer from RMBC to discuss the possi-bilities and we are pleased to report that he is willing to look at the implications.
WOOD LANE ACCESSBefore we can progress the matter any further RMBC want to carry out some traffic modelling exerciseswhich will provide a pic-ture of the likely effects of traffic on the adjoiningroads if two way or one way access was to occur. Once this modelling has been done we will have further discussions to look at the most appropriate actions, if any.
We will keep your informed of developments.

When dogs or cats ingest peace lilies, clinical signs may be seen immediately and include pawing at face, drool-ing, foaming, and vomiting. Moderate to severe swelling ofthelips, tongue, andupperairwaymakingitdifficultto breathe or swallow.
The peace lily does NOT result in acute kidney failure when ingested, and is different from more dangerous types of lilies that cause kidney failure.
Urgent Veterinary advice is necessary!Milk neutralises the oxalate in the plant so try to get the cat to drink a little milk (preferably lactose free). If the cat won’t or can’t drink, use a syringe to get a little milk in the mouth. Your vet will advise further and may give relevant medication. If you have some of the plant it’s advisable to take some with you to show the vet.
Remember, Lilies with the yellow pollen are extremely poisonous, seek medical veterinary advice immediately. Delay could result in kidney failure or even death.

Welcome to the Brinsworth Local Policing Team update.
My name is Dane Plant and I am the local PCSO for Brinsworth,Treeton and Catcliffe. I am based at Maltby but you will often see me in these localities patrolling the streets. My intention is to provide you with a more accessible and visible service on the streets.
I would like to make you aware of some burglaries that have been committed recently. The majority of these have been carried out during the daytime when properties have been vacant. The latest methods of entry the offender/s are using is to snap the locking barrel.
You may well have heard of “cylinder snapping” or “lock snapping“. Lock snapping is a very common method used by burglars to break into property that has a euro cylinder. Almost all properties that haveUPVC&Composite doors have thesetypesoflocksfitted.
The method of lock snapping involves break-ing the cylinder and then manipulating the lock to open the door. Whilst it is true that all the multi locking points on your door make it secure, it is important to realise the master cylinder operates them all. If this cylinder is compromised then all the locking
This is the path which runs to the rear of properties on Sunnybank Crescent and the rear of the new houses on Campbell Walk. Unfortunately it is the location of much anti-social behaviour that is seriously affecting the local residents, with large stones/bricks being dangerously thrown into gardens and the path itself being used as a race track by motor cyclists or quad bike riders.
The Police are monitoring the incidents and will take action against the culprits, includ-ing criminal proceedings, but the Parish Council has also added its help by agreeing to pay £1,000 for the supply and installation of a barrier at the end of the path where it meets Whitehill Lane. This is in addition to the barrier that Barratt Homes have in-stalled at the other end of the path where it opens onto Brinsworth Playing Fields. It is hoped that these barriers will deter the motor bikes and give some peace to the nearby residents.
points are potentially rendered useless.
To protect yourself against lock snapping there are essentially three ways to go.
1) By fitting a Sold Secure Diamond approved cylinder (SS312), your local professional licensed locksmith can advise you further on this type of lock.
2) If a SS312 Diamond cylinder is not used then you could opt for a three star Kite mark TS007 euro cylinder.
3) Alternatively, if the above is not possible you can opt for a one star kite mark cylinder and use a two star kite mark handle/cylinder guard.
Please note these incidents are in the minority and Rotherham is a very safe place to live however, these measures will help you drastically reduce your chances of becoming a victim of burglary.
The cost implications far outweigh the potential heartbreak and inconveniences caused by such crimes. Please help us to help you by securing your home effectively. That is all for this edition, stay safe, be neighbourly and report any suspicious activities straight away to the police. If you require further clarification, pleaseemail me at [email protected].
