The theme of God’s providing for God’s people that has been reflected in our readings for the past two weeks continues this week. In the Gospel, however. Jesus takes our understanding of this idea to a new level. God provided bread from heaven for the grumbling Israelites in the first reading but Jesus IS the bread of life, promising his followers that they will never again hunger or thirst.
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 5, 2018 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life. — John 6:27a

ANNOUNCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER
Docent Corner - Life of a Frontier Soldier Each presidio along the Spanish Frontier consisted of a company of mounted soldiers. The company normally consisted of 3 officers, 4 sergeants and some 40 or so soldiers and a number of Indian scouts. It would have been a very rare occurrence to ever see a full presidial company in formation as the strength of a company was dispersed in small detachments on various assignments. In addition to garrisoning the presidio, the soldiers were detached to explore, to help establish new missions, to garrison existing missions, to escort groups and parties, to guard missions from hostile Indians, to protect supply caravans, to carry dispatches, and to perform any number of other duties assigned to them by the provincial governors. Each of the missions had 5 soldiers and a Corporal as the mission guard and occasionally a few more soldiers when there was need. Since there were only about 55 soldiers per company, after manning the missions there were only 25 or so soldiers left at the presidio. They guarded the presidio horse ranch and handled all the mail delivery and escort duty. There were only about 220 active duty soldiers in Alta California for most of the Spanish reign. There were estimated to be over 200,000 Indians. The Spanish prevailed with this small ratio because of considerable support from the local Indian tribes. In fact many Indians were recruited into a militia. At Santa Barbara, some 200 Chumash were trained and armed over the years. Presidial soldiers were paid a salary which might not be collected for as many as 5 years at a time. It is significant that in the Spanish military system, presidial soldiers were by royal decree of equal status as troops from Spain itself. What happened to all of these soldiers? While some of the soldiers were transferred to duty elsewhere in Mexico, they mainly stayed in the area, had families, became part of the Californios and helped build California. They expanded into the ranchos and pueblos as Alta California grew and prospered. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association
Episode 9 - The Life of His Love: Prayer and the Life of the Spirit In this lesson, Bishop Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is centered on prayer. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Prayer is the lifting up of the mind and the heart to God.” On
pilgrimage to the places where the great saints and spiritual masters lived, Bishop Barron explores the different types of prayer: contemplation; adoration; petition; and intercession. In telling the stories of Catholics like Thomas Merton, St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, Bishop Barron demonstrates how the human person can be transformed through prayer that manifests a deep, spiritual commitment centered in Christ.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Historic Conservation of Our Lady of Bethlehem
The Carmel Mission Basilica Museum Preservation Committee, is happy to announce that on August 23, 2018, the statue image of Our Lady of Bethlehem will travel to the bay area for much needed
conservation cleaning and repair. For the past 2 years the preservation committee has carefully researched and sought expert consultation for this important and historic project. The statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem is was the first European styled statue to come to our California shores and is possibly the oldest image of Our Lady in the United States. The image of Our Lady is also the patroness of the Diocese of Monterey. This conservation project was made possible in part, by funds raised by the Carmel Mission Docent Association. If you would like to learn more about this important preservation project or to find out how you can help, please contact our Mission Curator and

LITURGY VAULT “The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves; it is His work; He is the subject;
and we must open ourselves to Him” (Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).
T R P Beginning last Sunday, the Church began the first of four Sundays considering the sixth chapter of Saint John’s Gospel on the Panis Vitae, Latin for “Bread of Life”. We learned that the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves, in addition to being an expression of the mercy of Christ towards the poor, is also a symbol or “sign” of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Christ declares: “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35; RSV-CE). Here, our Blessed Lord begins His discourse or “sermon” on the Sacrament of the Eucharist, a sacrament that He will later institute in the Cenacle or “Upper Room” at the Last Supper, along with the Sacrament of Holy Orders. “The three synoptic Gospels and St Paul have handed on to us the account of the institution of the Eucharist; St John, for his part, reports the words of Jesus in the synagogue of Capernaum that prepare for the institution of the Eucharist: Christ calls Himself the bread of life (panem vitae), come down from heaven” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 1338). “The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist” is a term used in Catholic theology to express the doctrine that Christ Jesus is really or substantially present in the Eucharist, and not merely symbolically or metaphorically. Christ is not “spiritually” present in bread and wine, but rather what looks, feels, and tastes like bread and wine is in fact the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ Jesus. The Catechism of the Catholic Church repeats the words of the Council of Trent, saying “[b]ecause Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly His Body that He was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the Body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of His Blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation” (n. 1376).
“The Eucharistic presence of Christ begins at the moment of the consecration and endures as long as the Eucharistic species subsist. Christ is present whole and entire in each of the species and whole and entire in each of their parts, in such a way that the breaking of the bread does not divide Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 1377). This means that so long as the Host looks like bread and the Precious Blood looks like wine, they are truly the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ—the Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. In the Blessed Sacrament, Christ is truly “Emmanuel (which means, God with us)” (Matthew 1:23; cf. Isaiah 7:14).
