Duke University invites you to attend Parents’ & Family Weekend2006. This weekend provides an opportunity for your family to visitwith your student and to share in their Duke experience. Parents’ &Family Weekend is a special time for parents, siblings, students, andfamily members. Discover what the university has to offer, in andout of the classroom, and learn about the organizations, people, andplaces that have become home to your student.

This brochure provides a preview of this year’s festivities as well asinformation that will be helpful to you as you plan your visit. Pleaseuse the form in this brochure to register or register online athttp://parents.studentaffairs.duke.edu. General InformationREGISTRATIONParents and Families who have pre-registered for the weekend by October 6thwill receive their parking pass and all tickets for the weekend via U.S. Mail. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, as West Campus and the Bryan Center willbe very congested on Friday, October 27th. Those who register after October 6thor who register on-site can pick up their registration packet at the registrationdesk in the Bryan Center Lobby from 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. on Friday and 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m. on Saturday. Tickets and registration packets will remain at the BryanCenter on Saturday. Do not go to football stadium for tickets!

PARKINGWe are pleased to offer an easy solution to parking during Parents’ & FamilyWeekend. For $12, you will have access to East, West and Central Campusparking as available. This pass includes football game day parking forSaturday, October 28th. If interested, please be sure to include this on theregistration form on the back of this booklet. You will receive this parkingpass in your registration packet via mail (if pre-registered by October 6th) orwhen you check-in at the Bryan Center lobby (for late/on-site registration).Please note – you can park on-campus without this pass. Visitor parking lotsare $2/hour and football game day (Saturday) parking is $5.

Please note – All parking lots on Friday, October 27th will be verycongested and may require the use of shuttle service to campus locations.This service will be provided free of charge to Parents’ & Family Weekendpermit holders. Parking is not permitted in handicapped spaces, servicevehicle spaces, those designated by a number o the name of a specificperson, or next to any curb marked “No Parking” or “Fire Lane” by signs.Failure to comply with the above procedures will result in a ticketed ortowed car. If you have a handicapped placard on your car, it will be goodfor any general, non-reserved, handicapped parking space on campus.

1:00P.M. � DUKE GARDENS TOUR AND RECEPTIONVolunteer docents will conduct a guided tour of thispremiere 55-acre public garden and provideinformation about its history, the Duke family, andcurrent projects. The tour will begin promptly at1:00p.m. Participations will gather by the irisfountain in front of the Doris Duke Center.

STUDENT FOR A DAY LECTURE SERIESExperience first-hand some of Duke’s premierprofessors as one faculty member presents achallenging, yet accessible lecture in her area ofscholarship and teaching, and others engage in apanel discussion. The Student for a Day LectureSeries gives you a chance to find out what it’s like in aDuke undergraduate classroom as well as theliveliness of exchange that can happen in after-hoursgatherings.

This program, now in its 27th year, is designed by theOffice of Continuing Studies for the Division ofStudent Affairs.

Lemurs of Madagascar, lorises of Asia, and galagoes(bushbabies) of Africa – we have them all at theDuke Lemur Center, nestled in the Duke Forestbarely a mile away from West Campus. Home toover 300 prosimians and representing the world’slargest collection of endangered primates, theLemur Center is at the heart of exciting scientificresearch, educational initiatives, and conservationefforts. Learn why the work done at the DukeLemur Center is at the forefront of primateevolution and genomic studies.

Dr. Anne Yoder is Professor of Biology and Director of the Duke Primate Center. She came to Duke in2005-06 from Yale University where she was associateprofessor of ecology and evolutionary biology and theassociate curator of mammals at Yale’s PeabodyMuseum.

teenaged Anna who was genetically engineered to bea bone marrow donor for Kate, her leukemia-strickenolder sister, the novel has been the talk of thecampus this fall.

Join a group of faculty and students in exploring themulti-faceted dimensions of My Sister’s Keeper. Thepanel will be moderated by Provost Peter Lange,Professor of Political Science. Expected participantsinclude Professor Robert Cook-Deegan of PublicPolicy and the Institute for Genome Sciences andPolicy, Professor Nancy Hill of English, and ProfessorJean O’Barr of Women’s Studies and PoliticalScience, and several undergraduates. Yourparticipation in the discussion is welcomed.

HELPING IMPROVE YOUR STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH – FROM HOME!This session will provide you with information aboutthe mental health services available for Dukestudents through Counseling and PsychologicalServices. From conducting field-based researchin Cambodia to working alongside Durhamneighborhood partners, students are finding thattheir work requires passion and a sense of purpose,as well as patience for dealing with chaos.
