Remembrance Day
We will be having our Remembrance Day Assembly on Friday, November 8 at 10:50 a.m.
PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Last Friday we hosted our Parent-Teacher
Interviews at the school. Parents and
guardians had the opportunity to check on
their child’s progress as we know have had
2 full months back at school. As a remind-
er, please remember that at any time dur-
ing the school year if you would like to dis-
cuss your child’s progress, please contact
your child’s teacher. Email is a wonderful
way to communicate but of course you can
still call the school and leave a message.
Thanks to all of those students and staff members
who donated food items on Thursday October 31st
for our ‘Let’s Scare Hunger’ Food Drive. We col-
lected nearly 200 items in one day! The donations
will go to our local Food Banks. Thank you to our
student leaders, the Lima Beans and Ms. Sullivan for
organizing this wonderful event.

Our kindergarten teachers are hosting a Pals Session on December 4th. "Pals" stands for Parents As Literacy Supporters and is a program that sets out to talk with parents about their child's current devel-opmental level and suggests ways to sup-port their learning at home. "Pals" also gives you an opportunity to ob-serve and work with your child in the classroom and a take home bag of materi-als is provided at the close of the session. Hope to see you in the kindergarten room and if work or other commitments make it difficult for you to attend, grandparents or family friends are also welcome. For more information about this program you can check under pro-grams and services on our school's website
Fall Cross Country Meets
& the Continuation of
Cross Country Club
We would like to congratulate all of our students
who participated in one or two of the Fall Cross
Country Meets we attended this Fall. The first was
held out at Kelly Creek on October 8th and the
most recent one was at Henderson on October 22nd.
We had decent participation and some very good
results! We are going to continue to have a Cross
Country Club throughout the school year. The new
path around the school makes it very convenient.
The Cross Country Club will meet on Thursday
mornings at 8:20am in the gym for a warm-up. We
will continue to track and log our runs. Interested
participants can check in with Mr. Burt for more
information.
We would also like to make a correction from our
last newsletter: Annika Schmunk was definitely a
top finisher in our Terry Fox Run this year and Mr.
Burt inadvertently left her off the list. Annika also
had two 1st place finishes in out two Cross Country
Meets this year. Way to go!
PARENTING MATTERS

Westview Elementary School Community Multi-Purpose Room
DISCIPLINE, LIMIT SETTING AND WHY KIDS MISBEHAVE
All behavior has a purpose. Come and find out what your child is trying to tell you with his/her behavior. This
informative session will focus on looking at the need behind the behavior and how to help our kids get their
needs met in healthy positive ways.
Lunch will be provided and child care can be arranged.
**Register for this session by calling Westview School at 604 485 5660 or email
Session facilitated by Kevin Dodd (family enhancement counsellor – Child and Youth Family services) and
Glynis Romanica (SD 47 school Counsellor)
In the Roots of Empathy program, a parent and ba-
by (who is two to four months old at the start of the
program) from the community visit a classroom
nine times over the course of a school year. A
trained Roots of Empathy instructor visits with the
family to guide children as they observe the rela-
tionship between the baby and its parent. The in-
structor also visits before and after each family visit
to reinforce teachings. There are 27 classroom vis-
its in total in a Roots of Empathy program. In the
program, the baby is the “teacher.” With each fam-
ily visit, the instructor leads the children in noticing
how the baby is growing and changing over the
course of his or her first year of life. The children
also watch the loving relationship between the par-
ent and baby and see how the parent responds to the
baby’s emotions and meets the baby’s needs. The
attachment relationship between a baby and a par-
ent is an ideal model of empathy. Children learn to
understand the perspective of the baby and label the
baby’s feelings, and then are guided in extending
this learning outwards so they have a better under-
standing of their own feelings and the feelings of
others. This emotional literacy lays the foundation
for more safe and caring classrooms, where chil-
dren are "Changers." They are more socially and
emotionally competent and much more likely to
challenge cruelty and injustice. A decade of inde-
pendent academic research across several countries
has consistently shown that the program dramati-
cally reduces aggression and increases social and
emotional understanding among children who
receive it. Children who have participated in
Roots of Empathy programs are kinder, more
cooperative, and more inclusive of others, and
are less aggressive and less likely to bully others
compared to children who do not
participate in the program. These positive ef-
fects have been shown to last years. At
Westview Elementary Mrs. Taylor ‘s and Mrs.
Butula’s classes are participating in the program.
POWELL RIVER KINGS –
Read to Succeed Program
We are very fortunate this year to once again have the
opportunity to participate in the Powell River Kings
‘Reading Heroes` Program. The Kings, along with First
Insurance Credit Union and Powell River Literacy Coun-
cil, have put together this wonderful program that puts
emphasis on the importance of reading.
Every Monday our school will select a `Reading Hero.
The `Hero` that week will receive two tickets to a Kings
game and a $10 gift certificate to Breakwater Books!
Our weekly Hero will be chosen for a variety of reading
reasons. It may be someone who reads a lot, it could be
a student who is really making an effort to become a
stronger reader, it may be someone showing leadership
by promoting the importance of reading.
As a bonus, a couple members of the Kings will be
working with our students throughout the school year
modelling their reading skills! This alone will be a huge
motivating factor for many of our kids! We may also co-
ax them into showing off their skills on our road hockey
court at recess!
We have recognized two students so far:
Cooper Jones in Kindergarten,
Heidi Gale in Grade 1 and
Gracie Munro in Grade 2
Lang Creek ‘Big Buddy’
Field Trip On October 18th our Kindergarten students and their
Grade 7 ‘Big Buddies’ took their annual trip to the Lang
Creek Hatchery to learn more about, and see firsthand
the life cycle of salmon. Our Grade 7 students were
wonderful ‘buddies’ and set very good examples for
our younger students. Many thanks to our teachers,
SSAs, our parent volunteers and the volunteers at the
hatchery for giving our students this experience.
STORYTIME! for Preschoolers
