PARENT NEWSLETTER Issue Number 2 2019 IMPORTANT DATES TO DIARISE Friday 12th April - 10.00am - 10.30am - Easter Bonnet Parade, all welcome Friday 12th April - Last day of Term 1 Monday 29th April - Students return for start of Term 2 Friday 24th May - Whole School Assembly at 9.15am (Item by Area C2) Friday 31st May - Pupil Free day - no school for students Dear Parents and Carers It has been another busy term at the school with students settling in to new classrooms, often with new teachers and support staff and new routines. We have watched and been delighted with the learning we are seeing from all our students. Each day when we visit classrooms we see our students engaged in their learning and achieving new skills. We are continuing to work closely with the Independent Living Centre as we were one of only two schools selected to participate in a trial to develop the skills and understanding of our students using eye gaze technol- ogy to enable them to access the curriculum and engage in greater learning. We are supporting 20 of our staff to upgrade their skills in explicit teaching by completing an intensive semester long, university level course, on ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis). We are seeing even more explicit and intensive teaching interventions as a result of this in our classrooms. We have 20 students actively participating in our MOVE program and have supported 10 staff to complete an intensive 2 day certified MOVE International training course. We are encouraging our senior students to be active and engaged at recess and lunch with new lunchtime Lego, Art and Craft and Games clubs alongside sessions each week developing their Soccer, Basketball, Ten- nis and Frisbee skills. School P and C Last week our school again showed what a tremendous parent community we have. A group of mums came together with Richard Brand from WA Council of State School Organisations Inc. (WACSSO) and established our official Burbridge School P&C. On Friday 12 th March at 9am all interested parents are invited to meet with the new P&C members and discuss and plan the directions for our P&C. Congratulations to our P&C President: Debbie Petkovic Vice President: Clarene Smith Secretary: Anastasia Harrison Treasurer: Susan Johnson Executive Members: Gemilla Ahmedin and Yesra Mnahi Continued on Page 2...

Dear Parents and Carers It has been another busy term at the school with students settling in to new classrooms, often with new teachers and support staff and new routines. We have watched and been delighted with the learning we are seeing from all our students. Each day when we visit classrooms we see our students engaged in their learning and achieving new skills. We also extend our thanks to Kikande Shandwe for all his service to the board over the past few years. Our current Board Members are: Linda Starling, Clarene Smith, Lorena Brown, Daniel Cope, Janine Spiby, Selvarani Bird and Kym Crawford We do have a position for a further parent representative, vacant on the board. Parents who wish to nominate for the School Board, in the first instance, should simply email me [email protected] to confirm your interest and receive a Burbridge School Board Member nomination form. Should we receive more than one nomination we will have a parent ballot to elect the representative. If you are interested in learning more about the role of being a School Board Member please contact me, or follow this link to the Department of Education’s information : page:https://www.education.wa.edu.au/school-councilsboards The last day of term will be an exciting one. At 10.00am will be our annual Easter Bonnet Parade which parents and caregivers are all invited to. This is really a delightful event that everyone thoroughly enjoys so if you can make the time to attend you will not be disappointed. Each class parades their hats to music. Families who are keen can make a hat at home for their child to wear on the day or they can wear a hat designed in class. We have chocolate and book prizes on the day. We are also extending our Easter Bonnet parade to Mums, Dads, Grandparents etc and encourage you to also come along in a splendid Easter hat. We have prizes for the adults too. Students are encouraged to bring in a chocolate egg to donate to our children’s Easter raffle. All eggs will go into a few Easter baskets. All our students will be given tickets and the raffle drawn at the parade.

The students in Area B have been developing their skills in literacy and numeracy using a variety of strategies and resources with secondary students enjoying hip-hop and reggae alphabet and counting songs while the primary students enjoy the letter and number playdough mats. All the students love the arts and will move to the beat of music, play musical apps on the iPads and co-actively participate in visual art. Every morning you will find some of the class working hard to develop their physical skills to access the curriculum, with the students spending time out of their chairs either on the floor, in alternative seating, in a standing or walking frames. Some students have been learning to slice and eat fruit and how to cook scrambled eggs in a cup. The students spend time in the Multi-Sensory Environment room to support self-regulation so that they can access the curriculum effectively. Area B’s big project this term has been preparing, planting and watering our raised vegetable garden. We are looking forward to harvesting tomatoes, corn, carrot, capsicum and beans after the holidays

Burbridge School has been delivering the MOVE Program, a movement-based educational program, specifically designed for students from all age groups, with physical disabilities since 2015. Following the initial trial with just four students, we are now proud to say that this curriculum is now being offered to students with physical disabilities across the whole school. We have a MOVE International Trainer on site who coordinates the program across the school and also delivers the required MOVE Basic Provider training to staff ensuring that our program delivery is highly effective and of the highest quality. In addition, we have a consultant MOVE physiotherapist who works closely with the students, MIT and staff to ensure the best possible outcomes for our students. Just recently, on the 7th and 8th of March, more staff at our school were trained to become MOVE Basic Providers. During the training staff shared student progress and success from classrooms across the school and this was a wonderful testimonial to everyone's hard work at Burbridge School over the years. As educators, we are committed to ensuring that there is an educational purpose behind targeted movements such as standing , sitting in alternatives to a wheelchair and walking to participate in lessons. In a nutshell, our philosophy at Burbridge School is that there is “no better time than now to get our students “MOVING” purposefully with a clear vision of helping our students develop greater independence via improved mobility skills.
