I would like to extend a warm welcome to all students and parents of our exceptional Junior School.
I am extremely proud and honoured to
oversee this wonderful Junior School
under the leadership of Dr John
Collier. I particularly cherish the
opportunity to assist in the
development of our most precious
resource – our young children.
We are known as the school of heart in
the heart of the city, known for its
happy and caring environment. Our
wonderful school continues to thrive
and prosper. At St Andrew’s, each
student is valued and encouraged to
reach their full potential. Just as each
student is an individual with their own
character and needs, so too their
educational growth is unique. The
teachers are high quality, committed to
nurturing and developing the ability of
each student through carefully planned
and innovative teaching programs.
Head of School welcomeWelcome to the journey which is St Andrew’s Cathedral School 2019!
Welcome Since the beginning of 2011, our Deputy Head of School, Head of Junior School, has been Mrs Rhonda Robson, formerly Head of Junior School and Deputy Principal at Broughton Anglican College in Menangle. Prior to Broughton, Mrs Robson was School Counsellor and Gifted and Talented Coordinator at St Paul’s Grammar School.
She has a tremendous capacity to accept a huge and varied workload and fulfil the tasks very well. Particularly helpful are her intimate knowledge of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which is widely regarded as international best practice in primary education, which she has weaved into the educational framework of St Andrew’s. Her people skills and insight based on her training and experience as a psychologist, and her extensive track record in gifted education have set her up to be a transformative leader.
Mrs Robson is also formally trained in gifted education through Professor
Miraca Gross’ GERRIC Unit at the University of NSW.
In addition to all these attributes, Mrs Robson has taught successfully from Kindergarten to Year 12 in a range of subjects, most notably in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Psychology where her academic results were the best at St Paul’s Grammar School. She understands the K-12 continuum and issues of transition to high school. She also produced and directed several highly successful school musicals. She has an advanced understanding of integration of Christian faith through the whole school and worked extensively with the Anglican Education Commission to that very effect at Broughton Anglican College and here at St Andrew’s.
In addition to all her school successes, Mrs Robson lectured and tutored for a number of years part-time in psychology at the University of Western Sydney.
Since Mrs Robson’s arrival eight years ago, the Junior School has more than doubled in size and is flourishing. She has transformed the teaching and learning practices, successfully improving the levels of Literacy and Numeracy in particular. The impact of this strategy is visible in quality teaching methodologies, and impressive NAPLAN results. The Junior School is a happy, vibrant and thriving part of the whole school of St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

We strive to develop the whole child – their heart, mind and life. We develop their character through our wellbeing program which nurtures specific character strengths based upon our foundational Christian values. We have nurtured minds with quality teaching practices driven by our quality teaching staff. We are innovative in how we utilise student data and set goals to improve learning for our students. We work as a team to determine the best strategies and programs for learning for our students. We have enjoyed outstanding NAPLAN and ICAS results, being recognised as the school with the greatest academic improvement in the region. We also have a highly reputable outdoor education program and co-curriculum, including steller music programs and sport opportunities.
In 2019 we look forward to many new innovative opportunities, including new technology, a new music space and more projects. We are excited about a new recreational space opening on the ground floor for our students next year. We have been busy planning a wide range of learning, sporting, camping, musical and drama activities, which will undoubtedly bring important heart, mind, life opportunities to all.
I pray that the holiday break is restful for all and look forward to seeing you at the end of January. May God keep you and your families safe over Christmas and ready for a wonderful year of learning, laughing and living in 2019.
Mrs Rhonda Robson Deputy Head of School (Primary)
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our students, parents, carers, aunts and uncles who are joining our Gawura School for the first time.
Thank you for choosing our school and entrusting your child with us. In 2019 we have 32 students enrolled in Gawura K-6.
Your child will be undertaking not only academic studies at Gawura but will be learning cultural language from the Wiradjuri nation. The students will also be attending cultural excursions where we will have the benefit of an Indigenous elder leading our students through their land and sharing traditional stories and wisdom from past and present times. We would also like for you to be involved on these excursions if time permits you to do so. Last year Gawura students from K-12, along with five parents attended a day of cultural learning at La Perouse,
led be local elder Uncle Bunno (Vic Simms), with knowledge gained about traditional foods, medicine and how they were used. Uncle Bunno also took us through the bush to a lookout with views over all of Botany Bay. This was well received and appreciated by everyone.
Your children will be undertaking a different sporting activity each term and we also encourage them to take up our wide array of co-curricular activities that occur after school during the week. The option of learning a musical instrument is also available, which several of our students currently do.
Finally I would also like to invite you to attend our twice a term GPAC Meeting (Gawura Parent Advisory Committee). This is held every Thursday in Weeks 2 and 8 of each term at 2pm in our Community Hub located on Level 4. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the staff and other parents as we discuss the current learning that is taking place in the classroom and the events that are coming up.
Thank you once again for joining our Gawura School and we look forward to the valued and productive partnership that exists between our students, staff and parents throughout the year.
Mr John Ralph

Getting in TouchWho and when to make contact
Rationale
All communication between members of the St Andrew’s Cathedral School community, including staff, parents, carers and students, should reflect the school’s values of grace, integrity and justice. The school encourages parents to be actively involved in their children’s education and in the school generally, believing that involvement enhances student learning. For this reason, the school places great emphasis on the establishment and maintenance of effective channels of communication with parents. Our procedures will be characterised by fairness, mutual respect and a spirit of cooperation in resolving issues and concerns. What can parents expect of the school?
We are committed to preserving a safe learning environment where individual rights are respected and our school community works together for a common purpose. We are committed to dealing sensitively with parents and carers and will respond as quickly as is practical to all matters.
We will maintain confidentiality where appropriate, releasing information on a “need to know” basis to staff. If parents have a specific request regarding the extent of access to information given, that request should be made known at the time of contact.
Members of staff will endeavour to return phone calls and/or emails within two working days. Please be aware that it is school policy that teachers will not leave classes to receive or return calls or conduct interviews.
The school is committed to attempting to resolve issues of concern speedily for parents. Often the incompleteness of information, or the multiple demands on people’s time prevents an immediate resolution. Parents are asked for their patience in following through matters.
What does the school expect of parents?
Communication – parents should:
• Direct their concerns to the appropriate staff member as outlined in the hierarchy (see graphic right);
• Make an appointment in advance when seeking personal communication with staff;
• Approach matters in a calm and rational manner, ensuring interactions result in a clear path to resolution;
• Provide contact details so we can call or email you within two working days;
• Communicate any extremely important matter in writing to ensure all the details of the matter can be fully understood;
• Only contact staff members during office hours (Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm). Please refrain from contacting staff on their mobile phone outside these hours.
Hierarchy of contactThe following guide for parents and carers indicates the best manner in which to direct specific issues related to the welfare of your child:
Academic issues
K-6
Class teacher
Curriculum Coordinator
Deputy Head of School (Primary)
Head of School
Pastoral/wellbeing issues
K-6
Class teacher
Stage teacher
Deputy Head of Junior School
Deputy Head of School (Primary)
Head of School
While it may seem quicker to go to the higher authority in a sequence it is usually more appropriate to start with the person who knows the student or the details of the incident best. Only if the matter cannot be resolved at the initial level should it progress through the hierarchy of responses.

Getting in TouchWho and when to make contact
Communication from the general public
If a member of the general public wishes to express their concerns over a matter specifically related to St Andrew’s Cathedral School, they are advised to contact the Deputy Head of School by calling 9286 9500 or through the website via the Feedback link: www.sacs.nsw.edu.au
St Andrew’s undertakes to reply to written complaints in a timely manner and would ask the person listing their concerns to give the school appropriate contact details to enable a response either in writing or by phone.
Breaches of this code
The school values its relationships with parents but cannot accommodate aggressive or rude behaviour by either parents or visitors. Where behaviour becomes aggressive or rude the person in question may be asked to leave school grounds and/or may be referred to the Head of School.
Marketing consent
Parents can request that their child’s image does not appear in any marketing or media materials by contacting the Registrar Mr Bruce Perry. Please email [email protected]
Visiting procedures
Before 9am and after 5pm
Parents should wear a Parent Lanyard when visiting St Andrew’s House and accompanying their child onto the campus. These are given to registered parents and carers at the start of the school year. Parents visiting BBC are required to sign in at reception for a visitor’s pass.
Between 9am and 5pm
Parents should make an appointment in advance with the relevant staff member or department, sign in/out at Reception and wear a Visitor Lanyard while on the school premises. A staff representative should meet the parent at Reception. The only exception is when the parent is heading directly to the Uniform Shop, After School Care or the Health Centre on Level 6 of SAH.
School events
For school events which involve multiple visitors (such as parent teacher meetings or social functions), parents do not need to report to Reception or wear a lanyard. Clear signage will be displayed at the entrances to the school and staff and/or student representatives will be on hand to assist in directing visitors to and from the event venue.

Student wellbeingNurturing the individual in community under Christ
Student wellbeing
The student wellbeing vision statement “Nurturing the individual in community under Christ” underpins the student wellbeing structures, programs and relationships at St Andrew’s Cathedral School.
There is a tradition at the school of staff caring for the individual students and an acknowledgement of the need to develop in the students a strong sense of identity, resilience and connectedness through all areas of school life, from the classroom to the playing fields. The school recognises that each student is entitled to individual care and attention and that continuity of that care throughout the student’s time at St Andrew’s Cathedral School will help to achieve this sense of identity, resilience and connectedness.
Programs include Bounce Back, Visible Wellbeing, Character Strengths and the Raising Responsibility System.
The Junior School employs two psychologists who are experienced in providing advice and support on pastoral and academic issues affecting students at the school. The counsellors are able to provide further advice regarding specialist help in cases where it is required.
St Andrew’s provides a comprehensive approach to student wellbeing built on the premise that young people learn best when they are healthy, safe and happy. Resilience and connectedness will increase the individual’s wellbeing and decrease their chances of becoming ‘at risk’. The structure aims to be a holistic, cohesive and systematic approach to health and
student wellbeing which will be reflected in curriculum, teaching and learning strategies, school organisation, policy, culture and service provision. It will also seek to build community links and partnerships.
All Junior School teachers exercise strong pastoral care and support for the children in their care. The nurturing process of guiding, listening and leading is very important in these years.

General informationSchool times, attendance, office hours, absence and canteen
School timesJunior School commences at 8.40am and concludes at 3.10pm. Students are escorted to the School Foyer and then Kent Street for dismissal or pick up at the end of the day. There is a 30-minute free parking option in the SAH car park. It is advised that you do not enter the car park until approximately 3.10pm and then meet your son or daughter in the School Foyer or at the Kent Street pick-up point shortly after.
Student attendanceAll students are expected to be at school by 8.40am ready to commence the school day. It is a legal requirement that student attendance is registered daily and any absence is appropriately explained in writing by a parent or guardian. It is of utmost importance that all students are at school on time as important Literacy sessions occur at the commencement of every school day. Please note that any partial absences will be recorded and the school is liable to ensure an appropriate explanation is sought. It is not sufficient to state simply that a student is ‘ill’ or ‘sick’ when absent; the written explanation must outline in what way. Both partial and full absences will be recorded on the school semester reports.
DEAR TimeFrom 8am to 8.10am every morning is Drop Everything And Read Time. All students who arrive at 8am must read silently for 10 minutes.
Student late arrivals and early departuresJunior School students who arrive after 8.40am or leave before 3.10pm are required to have an adult report with them to the Main Reception in the
School Foyer and to complete the
appropriate form. These students are
considered Partial Absences and will
be recorded as such. No Junior School

General information and communicationCo-curricular, communication, reporting and emergencies
Co-curricular activitiesYou will receive a booklet via email outlining co-curricular activities early Term 1, which will include the date that bookings open. Please note that there are no co-curricular activities in the first week of school.
CommunicationIn order to minimise confusion for day-to-day operations in the first instance, other than an emergency requiring an immediate response, please contact the class teacher either through email, phone or in person at the end of the school day. Similarly, the return of correspondence should be to the class teacher, unless otherwise directed.
The Junior School will update parents and guardians through a fortnightly newsletter and/or emails and notes. The student handbook facilitates additional parent-teacher communication. From time to time, parents may wish to make enquiries about their child’s progress or various aspects of the school’s program. The school values such contact with parents/guardians and they are encouraged to discuss any matter that may be affecting their child’s schooling. As a general rule, parents should contact the appropriate Junior School teacher, in the first instance, as they will initially deal with all matters relating to general progress, attendance and conduct or other matters.
CorrespondenceA letter from parents or guardians is to be tendered without delay to cover:
(a) Absence or lateness
(b) Exemption for inability to participate in activity (Sport, PDHPE etc)
(c) Sickness (d) Non-completion of homework
(e) Leave from school
(f) Leave from compulsory event (prior to the event)
Please send to [email protected]
Child progress reportingThe task of educating young people is shared between the home, the school and the individual student. For this reason, the provision of clear communication channels is vital.
There are a number of ways in which parents are able to be kept informed about their child’s progress. These include the end of semester reports and parent-teacher interviews. We also encourage parents and teachers to make direct contact with one another through phone calls, emails and meetings as needed.
Parent information is available on the new Junior School Portal.
While parents adjust to the new portal, we will continue to make all Junior School information available on SACSCONNECT, which is available through the SACS website. Go to: http://sacsconnect.sacs.nsw.edu.au
On SACSCONNECT, click on Junior School Information, which links to our Dropbox, where all Junior School documents (information notes and homework) will be found.
sacsconnect
We encourage you to make good use of the SACS website and to read the fortnightly newsletters to inform yourself about aspects of your child’s educational experience.
Emergency contact with parentsExperience in other countries has shown that mobile networks may fail because of overload in a crisis situation. The school website will be updated with messages to the school community on behalf of the Head of School should an emergency arise. All families should take note of the website URL, www.sacs.nsw.edu.au where all key information is kept up-to-date.
Emergency drill procedures
St Andrew’s Cathedral School has designed emergency procedures to minimise the chance of a life-threatening emergency and to mitigate damage in the event one does occur. These measures are considered appropriate for both school buildings.
All alarms received from smoke detectors, sprinkler systems and manual break glass stations cause an immediate localised response and send a signal, when warranted, to the fire brigade. These devices also shut down airconditioning to prevent the spread of fire, shut down the gas supply to the buildings and pressurise the fire stairs (BBC & SAH). At the same time, the lifts automatically return to the ground to prevent personnel being caught in them.
All rooms in SAH have EWIS loudspeakers to alert occupants of the need to evacuate.
| SACS - Junior School and Gawura Parent Information Booklet 201928
General communicationGeneral rules, discipline, school functions and photographs
Evacuation procedures for parents / guestsAll people not normally in the school should exit the buildings according to the directions of the Fire Wardens and assemble in front of the glass doors on the outside in the Square.
Rule enforcementOur Junior School is a safe and happy environment and we are blessed with a school climate that is overtly tolerant, respectful and caring. High expectations are held for student behaviour in and out of the classroom.
General rules
(i) Students are encouraged to take particular care in the security of any electronic device or musical instrument they bring to school. The school is not responsible for breakages due to inappropriate care and usage.
(ii) Mobile phones and other electronic devices will be confiscated by teachers if brought into a class, on to the playground or into Before and After School Care. The confiscated phone/electronic device will be handed back to the student by the Head of Junior School or Gawura School at a later time. Repeated offences will result in the student being asked not to bring the item to school. Mobile phones, with the capacity to take photos, should not be used in an inappropriate way.
(iii) Students are only permitted to play ball and chasing games such as handball, basketball, football, soccer and cricket on the Rooftop of SAH and in the Gymnasium.
(iv) Chewing gum of any form is banned from the school and will not be tolerated.
(vi) Skateboards and scooters are not permitted in the school at any time. Offenders will have their skateboard or scooter confiscated. Students are not to ride skateboards, bikes or scooters to and from school.
Discipline
1. Time out Reflection and Restoration
If a student makes repeated poor choices following verbal warnings or engages in physically or psychologically harmful behaviour, they may be required to attend a Reflection and Restoration session (a time-out) at lunchtime. Repeated offences may result in playground suspension. An in-school suspension would be the next level of behaviour consequence following unsuccessful improvement in behaviour.
2. Suspension and expulsion
The suspension of a student from school for a serious breach of discipline will be for a period to be determined by the Head of School. While suspended, a student may be required to stay at home or in a designated study area within the school building. No student will be re-admitted to classes until there has been a conference with the student, his parents and the school. Any student who is suspended more than once will be in jeopardy of being asked not to return to school. During a suspension, a student may not participate in any school activity.
School functionsStudents are expected to take an active role in all school functions. Attendance is compulsory at the end-of-year Evening of Celebration and Prize-giving (for Years 5 - 12), the annual Swimming Carnival, the annual Athletics Carnival, the annual Gala Day, the Junior School and Gawura Music / Musical events (Showcase, IPSHA Music Festival, Musical and Christmas Concert).
Students are to wear full school uniform (including blazer) to all school functions, unless otherwise directed, or directed to wear sport uniform.
School photographs
From time to time, the school’s staff will take photographs (either digital or printed versions) of students at various events and activities. These photographs are stored in various departments and archived at the end of each year.
During the year, these photographs are made accessible to staff to produce documents, teaching aids, brochures and other promotional and educational material, including the school’s Prospectus, Inspired magazines and advertisements. They may also be used on the website and in the school’s newsletters.
If you would NOT like your child to feature in any of the communication material produced by the school, please contact Registrar Bruce Perry on (02) 9286 9507 or email [email protected]

The raise responsibility discipline system
There are three principles we practice:
Positivity
People do good when they feel good, not when they feel bad. Staff communicate what they want – not what they do not want. They change negatives into positives. “No running” becomes “we walk in the hallways”; “stop talking” becomes “this is quiet time”.
Choice
Simply stated, people do not argue with their own decisions. Choice-response thinking is taught so students never need be victims.
Reflection
A person can control another person only temporarily. But no one can actually change another person. Asking reflective questions is the most effective approach to prompt change in others.
Raise Responsibility Hierarchy
The hierarchy engenders a desire to behave responsibly and a desire to put forth effort to learn.
Students differentiate between internal and external motivation – and learn to rise above inappropriate peer influence.
4 levels of responsibility
D. Democracy: develops self-discipline, shows kindness to others, does good because it is the right thing.
C. Cooperation: listens, practises, cooperates. The motivation is external.
B. Bullying/ Bothering: bosses others, bothers others, breaks classroom standards.
A. Anarchy: chaos, no rules.
The hierarchy engenders a desire to behave at the highest levels.
The levels separate the deed from the doer, reducing defensive behaviours.

Academic curriculum
St Andrew’s Cathedral School works to
the guidelines of the NSW Board of
Studies and is fully accredited and
registered. The school teaches from a
Christian perspective in accordance
with our vision for teaching and
learning. Subjects taught are English,
Mathematics, Science and Technology,
Human Society and its Environment,
LOTE (Mandarin K-6), Christian
Development, Creative Arts, and
Personal Development Health and
Physical Education.
City links 2019 – city excursions
At St Andrew’s we use our unique
location to assist learning through
first-hand experiences of our city
environment. Learning spaces extend
beyond the school’s buildings to the
organisations and facilities in the city
and include online learning spaces and
outdoor learning spaces such as St
Andrew’s Oval and Kirrikee. We make
use of the many educational facilities
close to the school, including Darling
Harbour, the various museums,
libraries and art galleries.
Parents provide permission for their
child to be included in excursions
through the school day when signing
the enrolment contract. These
excursions are ‘no cost’ excursions.
Should there be a cost, a specific
permission note will be sent and
the cost will be added to your school
account. You will be notified through
newsletters and through email
notification of any planned activity
in the surrounding CBD area.
SACS Junior School Learning Framework
Our Junior School is a living system,
education here is defined as a
collective process involving constant
adaptation and growth. It is derived
from a shared sense of purpose, a
strong desire to foster deep and
meaningful learning, developing the
potential of each student. Our
teaching is characterised by respect,
for the students and for each other,
for the professional capacity of each
member of the team, exchanging and
creating information, professionals
learning constantly, paying attention
to our results, our efforts, co-evolving,
developing wisdom as we learn, clear
about our purpose, alert to changes
and impacts. We aim to be self-
improving and self-sustaining,
dynamic and flexible. It is not
mechanistic, enforcing one best
model of instruction. We are research
based and seek to consider the best
practices available and to be
courageous in our professional
rationalisation, evaluation and shared
commitment. Our mission is to
provide quality Christian education
that stands apart from other schools
and other systems. We strive to be
authentic and the best we can be as a
relational Christian community that
seeks to develop the Heart, Mind and
Life of our students and staff in the
heart of Sydney.
In the Junior School, we recognise
that effective student learning and
wellbeing are interrelated and that we
need to focus upon promoting each
student’s engagement in their own
wellbeing and their own learning
process, making both visible. Teachers
construct teaching and learning
opportunities that are purpose driven,
based on clear evidence of student
progress, to devise a clear
understanding of what will work best
for improving student accomplishment. The Junior School Learning
Framework is based upon the St
Andrew’s Cathedral School whole
school framework. The Character Strengths are fundamental to all that
we do, they are based on the school’s
core adage of Heart, Mind and Life. The school values relationships, it is
through teacher student relationships
that the wellbeing, co-curricular
accomplishments and academic
achievements of the students are
developed and enhanced. The
framework draws on the best of the
school culture and current
educational research, promoting best
practice by encapsulating the best of
explicit teaching, inquiry-based
learning, cognitive science, all
combined with the aim of achieving
mastery teaching practices and
fostering deep learning.
The model acknowledges the
importance of surface learning moving to deep learning and then
transferring that learning to other
contexts. As the learner gains
automaticity and fluency of the
essential skills, then learning becomes
more student-led and less explicit in
nature. Teaching and learning
experiences are designed to embrace
understandings gained from the
current research into neuroplasticity, and particularly cognitive load theory focusing on what learning is and how
the brain works, with the aim to
nurture a growth mindset.

Gifted education
As a Christian school we have a responsibility to recognise a wide range of student abilities, and to provide challenging educational experiences for all students, helping them to achieve their God-given potential (Matthew 25:14-30; Romans 12:6). This includes students of high academic potential, or gifted and talented students. At SACS, students have their needs met through the process of differentiated instruction. Gifted and talented students are recognised as having unique educational needs and need to be catered for in order that their learning outcomes are optimised.
Developmentally appropriate programs for gifted and talented students incorporate a combination of grouping strategies, enrichment, counselling interventions and acceleration. Selection of students for Accelerated classes and/or cluster groups commonly follows a recommendation procedure. Student nomination may be gathered from parents, students and staff and considered alongside academic records from semester based school-wide screening. Standardised tests, maths, comprehension and vocabulary, group reading tests, oral reading fluency, phonemic awareness, mathematics diagnostic tests, basic skills assessments and UNSW competitions are components considered by the Gifted and Talented Committee for placement. Full psychometric assessments, provided by registered psychologists, provide valuable information in the development of a student profile, and parents are urged to provide the school with such information if it becomes available.
Each year a Parent Information Evening
is held, outlining the school’s policy
and procedures and directions in gifted
education. The Gifted Education
Committee acts corporately as arbiter
of any decisions regarding student
placement. The Committee considers
which students would benefit most by
placement in the extension class or
cluster grouping at this time, in
consultation with all stakeholders.
The Junior School Gifted And
Talented Coordinator is Mrs Lucy
Birts; she has a masters qualification
in Gifted Education (contact can be
made by email to eedwards@sacs.
nsw.edu.au). Other staff with
specialised Gifted Education
qualifications include Rhonda Robson,
Kate Robertson, Dr Kaye Chalwell and
Miss Emily Sze.
Reporting
St Andrew’s Cathedral School has
three formal methods of reporting
on student progress. They are:
• School Reports are issued at the
conclusion of Semester 1 and
Semester 2 and provide a
comprehensive summary of
student progress.
• Parent/Teacher interviews are held
in Term 1 and Term 3 for each year
level and provide an opportunity for
parents to meet with individual teachers
to discuss their child’s progress.
• As well as this, there are informal
opportunities for parents to discuss
their child’s progress through
conversations with individual
class teachers.

Junior School programChapel, Christian Development, the Mandarin program
Christian ministryChapel is a weekly event at the school and all students are expected to attend. Chapels provide a communal expression of the school’s Christian basis and commitment, and go hand-in-hand with the Christian Development course.
The Christian Development course aims to introduce students to the Christian faith as it is revealed in The Bible and provides them with the opportunity to engage in healthy discussion on both its theory and practice. Chapel sees students participating as they provide the music, lead the singing, read The Bible, offer prayer, and occasionally speak of their own experience of the Christian life.
In addition to weekly Chapel services, the chaplaincy team coordinates a wide range of voluntary Christian ministries. There are a number of lunchtime groups for Bible study, prayer, fun and encouragement. These groups are affiliated with the Crusaders and are generally structured around year and gender. These groups are led by the chaplaincy team, Christian staff and Year 13 Abbotsmith Christian Fellowes.
In addition, Chaplaincy team members are available to meet with students at any time for prayer, support, pastoral counselling and encouragement.
The Mandarin programThe Mandarin program is a significant and integral part of education at St Andrew’s. It aims to enable students to develop communication skills, focus on languages as systems and gain insights into the relationship between language and culture, leading to lifelong personal, educational and vocational benefits. We are thus very much committed to teaching our students to understand and appreciate the Chinese culture. We are very keen to provide opportunities for our students to be involved in cultural activities, such as establishing sister schools relationships with schools in China and presenting our students to the National Chinese Eisteddfod held in Sydney annually.
The main components of the program are described as objectives with distinctive outcomes in each area for each stage.
The Mandarin program has been written in a unit form based on topics that engage student interest and/or correspond with units of work being studied in other syllabus areas.
Main topics include:
• Festivals and celebrations – Chinese New Year/Dragon Boat festival/mid-Autumn festival/Christmas
• Greeting/introducing and instructions
• Poems/rhymes and songs
• Numbers and their application in everyday life – dates and time/shopping etc
• Knowing myself – my body parts/my family
• Countries and nationalities
• Animals and pets
• Foods and drinks
• Sports and leisure activities
• Seasons and weather

Junior School programMusic
Music Learning music is very much a part of general school activities. Many students are already taking private instruction with one or more of the numerous quality vocal or instrumental tutors employed by the school. Approximately 3/4 of Junior School students learn an instrument.
The Music Department engages a large number of visiting instrumental teaching staff, covering a wide range of vocal, string, wind, brass, keyboard and percussion instruments. Private and group lessons are given weekly during term time. Most students receive a 30-minute private or group lesson per week, but as a student progresses on an instrument, it may be opportune for their private lesson to be extended to 45 or 60 minutes.
Additionally, each student who is learning privately is encouraged to participate in an ensemble. These activities are designed to supplement and extend the work that is covered in private lessons and also to provide performance opportunities at various concerts that are arranged during the year.
It is a policy of the school that all instrumental students perform in at least one concert or assembly each semester. Studio Soiree Concerts are also held each term, allowing parents to see their child and other students perform, as well as giving students concert experience. Infant and Primary concerts are held each semester and there are other specialist concerts such as the Ensemble Concert.
Many parents and guardians enquire how they can help encourage their child with their musical studies. The most important help you can give is to organise your child into a regular practice routine. Ideally, this should be done at a set time each day – before school, after school or in the early evening. Practice should be done at least five times per week.
The amount of practice time required will vary from teacher to teacher and student to student. Beginners should start with approximately 10 to 15 minutes for each practice session. The rate of progress and the amount of pleasure derived from playing an instrument depends largely upon the amount of practice, the regularity of practice and the concentration and effort that are applied during the practice routine.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend lessons if they can. This will enable them to watch the techniques used by the teacher and to discuss specific problems, length and routine of practice items, and general ways of maintaining the child’s interest during the more difficult stages of learning.
A music tuition application form can be found online.

Junior School programOutdoor education, sport
Outdoor educationThe school owns and operates Kirrikee, an Outdoor Education Centre in the Southern Highlands south-west of Sydney. Students from Years 3-6 attend an Outdoor Education Program once each year. Each program has the primary aim of enabling every student to develop an understanding of their relationship with their Creator and to marvel at the wilderness areas they are in. It aims to challenge, change and encourage students emotionally, relationally and spiritually. The Outdoor Education program is an important component of the curriculum and all students are expected to attend.
Year 1 has a long day camp in a local national park and Year 2 has a day camp with a school sleepover.
The focus in the primary ages is to have fun and give these young students a taste of the Australian bush with time away from the normal comforts and security of home, together with some small outdoor recreation skill development.
Kirrikee also opens its doors to the families of St Andrew’s Cathedral School students on weekends and school holidays. Families who wish to visit or stay at the centre should contact the Outdoor Education Office at our city campus on (02) 9286 9500.
The camp is run by the school’s own Outdoor Education Staff.
SportSt Andrew’s has a sport program for students from Kindergarten to Year 6 that focuses on a different sport each term. It aims to build on the program offered in previous years, utilising various facilities in the school and city for both summer and winter sports.
We are also a part of ASISSA (an inter-school sporting association) for students in Years 3 to 6 and compete against other schools throughout the various sporting seasons of the year commencing in Term 2. Students who wish to compete will be given the opportunity to join teams at the commencement of each season.
Within the inter-school competition, St Andrew’s Junior School has a fine reputation for sporting success and attitude, which is reflected in the student’s skill development, appropriate dress, enthusiasm, encouragement of others and conduct. Students may not be permitted to compete against other schools if they do not adhere to the required standards for involvement. All sports, competitive and non-competitive, are fully supervised. Students will either walk to a venue or travel by transport provided (usually bus).
There are a number of carnivals held throughout the year. All students (Years 3-6) are expected to participate at the School Swimming and Athletics Carnivals as part of the school sports program. There are opportunities for students to represent St Andrew’s at ASISSA Carnivals and at NSW Combined Independent School level.

Parents, carers and friends are integral to the St Andrew’s Cathedral School Community. The Association of Parents and Friends has the dual role of building and supporting the parent community, as well as fundraising to support our school and students.
The P&F looks forward to your involvement in the many events we host during the year. Perhaps we will see you at our Welcome in the Square, Grandparents’ Day celebrations or our Food and Wine (with Christmas market). Whether you are a guest or a volunteer, you will be warmly welcomed.
The P&F supports year group social functions organised by Parent Convenors. These events provide opportunities for parents (and sometimes their children) to meet informally to develop friendships and share the highs and lows of parenting and school life. This is much like a ‘class parent’ and we ask for volunteers from each year group in Years 7-12, and each class in Years K-6, to foster and encourage social networks, welcome families to the school, support families in need, and liaise with the P&F and the school’s Director of Community Engagement. This is a vital role in a school that draws students from over 220 Sydney suburbs. Convenors also encourage parents and carers to help out with the P&F activities.
While we have fun at our P&F events, many have a dual purpose as fundraisers. In recent years, the P&F has raised funds for audio visual equipment, educational items, staff scholarships
and the refurbishment of Chapter House. In addition, we have several sub-committees that focus on supporting specific areas of interest to parents, including rugby and football sub-committees, who work to foster friendships and fundraise within their sports.
All families are encouraged to pay a membership fee with their school fees in Term 1 to offset administrative costs and support our community events.
The P&F meets twice a term with the aim of building and strengthening relationships across the school community. The Head of School presentation is a standing item on the agenda. Educational, welfare and school developments, everything from changing technology to changing uniforms, are presented by SACS staff at P&F meetings. The meetings help parents stay informed in the complicated modern world of education which has changed so much since their own schooling. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The P&F has its own community newsletter that updates parents on items of interest, upcoming events and P&F meeting dates and minutes.
The P&F relies completely on parent and carer volunteers drawn from the school community. If you would like to find out more about these activities, please come to our meetings or contact us at: p&[email protected].

SACS school foundationOverview, Gawura Scholarship Fund
Once a member of the SACS Community – always a member of the SACS Community. The warmth, care and excitement of the school calls in a very special way – so that our wider community is made up of students, parents, friends, alumni and staff, current and past.
The SACS Foundation plays an
important role in fostering this
community and in supporting the
school in achieving excellence in
education. The Foundation aims to assist
SACS and Gawura as it strives
for students to have hearts that love,
minds that grow and lives that give.
The SACS Foundation actively manages
a portfolio of investments and
undertakes fundraising for specific
purposes including:
• The Gawura Scholarship Fund
• The Foundation Building Fund
• The Foundation Library Fund
• Heath Bursary Fund
• Sports projects through the Australian
Sports Foundation
To achieve our goals, we actively involve
the school community through a variety
of events and programs such as gala
dinners, trivia nights and cocktail
evenings. The generosity we receive
from the parent community is greatly
appreciated.
St Andrew’s has a vibrant and active
school community and we encourage
you to join the activities of the
Foundation and the school.
The SACS Foundation has its own page
on the school website. It publishes a
quarterly e-newsletter called Elevate for
former students, staff and parents and
the wider community. Foundation staff
work closely with the Association of Parents and Friends, Old Andreans’ Association (alumni) and the Hessian Club (former parents) who provide community and financial support to SACS. The Foundation also manages the social media for Gawura including its Facebook page, Linked In, Twitter, a quarterly newsletter and its volunteer program.
The generosity of our wider community has benefitted the students of SACS and Gawura significantly. Every donation is tax deductible. Please visit our donations page on our website at: www.sacs.nsw.edu.au.
For more information on Gawura or the variety of ways you can help please contact Catherine Gunning, [email protected]
For more information on the building fund, sports fund, library fund or Heath Bursary Fund, please contact Lyn Jarvis, Director of Community Engagement, at [email protected].
The Foundation Uniform shop operates on Level 6 of St Andrew’s House on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. All profits from the Foundation Uniform shop are redirected into the SACS Foundation and greatly assist in supporting its goals.
The Gawura Scholarship Fund
Gawura provides an engaging, culturally enriching education for Indigenous children who live in Sydney. Its aim is to equip students with the ‘know how’ and tools they need to create a fulfilling life beyond school. Gawura was established in 2007 and its presence at SACS has greatly enriched both communities.
Contributions to the Gawura Fund,
which is managed by the SACS
Foundation, cover the cost of tuition,
books, excursions, uniforms and co-
curricular activities for all students. With
the ongoing support of our Friends of
Gawura, we hope to continue to
provide a quality education enabling our
students to have a life filled with exciting
opportunities beyond school.
In 2019 we will have 39 students on full
scholarships from Kindergarten to Year
12. Funding comes primarily from the
generous donations of individuals,
corporates, families and Foundations.
Funding does not come from SACS
student school fees, however, our SACS
community is very welcome to
contribute money or time to Gawura.
| SACS - Junior School and Gawura Parent Information Booklet 201942
SACS Building Fund
St Andrew’s, like most independent
schools, uses school fees to pay for
teaching staff, support and operational
staff and operating costs. We therefore
rely on the generosity of the SACS
community to help deliver building
projects, provide bursaries and
upgrade resources.
The Foundation Building Fund
provides an important source of
funding for capital projects at our
school and plays a pivotal role in
maintaining and improving school
facilities. We appreciate the generosity
of our families who donate to the
Building Fund when paying their fees.
It provides financial security to
continue our program of revitalising
our campus. Thanks to the generosity
of past donors, for 2019 we have been
able to build a new sports centre on
the ground floor of St Andrew’s House.
In 2018 the SACS community
generously raised funds to support the
development of Chapter House into a
new Performing Arts space. We look
forward to its completion in 2019.
All donations to the Building Fund are
tax deductible.
Thanks to the generosity of past donors, for 2019 we have been able to build a new sports centre on the ground floor of St Andrew’s House.
Heath Bursary Fund
Life is not always predictable. The Heath
Bursary Fund aims to provide short-
term fees support to families of existing
students at St Andrew’s Cathedral
School, who experience unforeseen
financial difficulties such as the death
of a parent, long-term illness of a family
member, a change in employment
situation or a family break-up. By
supporting this bursary fund, you can
assist members of our community
when it matters most. The Heath
Bursary Fund assists vulnerable families
at a crucial time and is enormously
appreciated by those who can feel quite
desperate when misfortune strikes.
Sports Projects through ASFAt SACS we believe that young people
who are physically fit and enthusiastically
challenged in an enjoyable and safe
sporting environment can perform
better academically, socially and
emotionally. Donations to sport at
SACS can be made through the
Australian Sports Foundation, which
was set up by the Australian
Government in 1986 to support the
development of sport in Australia.
This allows our donations to be tax
deductible as we specifically work to
raise funds and promote the
development of sport, across all
grades, all sports and for all students.
The aim is to direct funds to create a
truly outstanding sports program for
all the students.
