Over the years, we have been fine-tuning the education system to

help our students discover and develop their strengths and

interests while moving away from an over-emphasis on academic

results. This will better enable them to lead fulfilling lives.

The PSLE changes are Part of a bigger story

The changes to the PSLE scoring and

S1 posting are another step in this direction.

THE PSLE remains a useful checkpoint

It gauges the level of students’ learning

in the core subjects at the end of six years of

primary school and guides his/her future

choices.

Edusave Merit Bursary and Good Progress Award

For EMB & GPA for P1 & P2 and GPA for P3 levels, students are assessed based on the following learning dispositions, linked to our school values:

• JOY OF LEARNING

• CURIOSITY

• RESPONSIBILITY

• NEVER GIVE UP

• HUMILITY

The

Our School values

As we reduce the assessment load, the aim is not to erode the pursuit of excellence. We are starting from a high point of rigour. With these changes, students will:

• Have more time and space to deepen their learning, especially in the transition years (i.e. P3, P5, S1 and S3).

• Better enjoy the process of learning and develop dispositions for lifelong learning.

HOLISTIC ASSESSMENT

FOR PRIMARY 1 & 2

Page 22: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

• Even with the removal of mid-year examinations for some levels, teachers will continue to assess their students.

• Parents/ Guardians will be kept informed of the child/ ward's progress.

How will I know about my child’s progress?

Page 23: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

Will my child be ready for national examinations?

Even with the removal of mid-year examinations for some levels, the number of examinations to assess learning is still adequate.

Page 24: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

Which assessments would be counted? How are the various assessments weighted?

• Assessment serves to support students’ learning, gauge their progress, and address learning gaps.

• There will still be assessment (class tests, projects, presentations), and these are no different from current practices.

Page 25: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

How will my child’s academic progress be measured if there are completely no examinations and weighted assessments at P1 and P2?

• Current practices to gather information about students’ learning through checkpoints (e.g. class discussions, in-class work, homework, and bite-sized tests) will continue.

• The change is that these checkpoints will no longer count towards an overall result.

• Use of qualitative descriptors instead of marks and grades to report students’ learning progress in the report book (Holistic Development Profile).

Page 26: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape
Page 27: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

What will the new report book look like?

Changes aim to focus on a student’s progress in learning, and discourage peer comparison.

Children should focus on how they have improved in their own performance. These adjustments will also help to reduce test anxiety.

Page 28: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

How will we allocate classes for Primary 3?

• When progressing to P3, students will no longer be

assigned classes based solely on academic ability.

• The school also considers peer support, teacher-

student relationships, support for special needs,

social dynamics etc.

Page 29: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

How will my child be selected for EdusaveAcademic Awards?

• Positive learning dispositions instead of academic performance will be used for the awards.

• Edusave Merit Bursary (EMB): P1 and P2 students who display positive learning dispositions consistently.

• Good Progress Award (GPA): P2 and P3 students who have made significant improvement in learning dispositions.

Page 30: PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION · Holistic Assessment for P1 and P2 4. Key Programmes for P1 and P2 5. Strategic Partnership with Parents PROGRAMME. ... •Diversified school landscape

What are learning dispositions? • In recent years, MOE has progressively addressed the concern of

over emphasis of academic results. In 2019, MOE has removed all weighted assessment in the lower primary.

• We encourage students to acquire positive learning dispositions, for a more positive start to their education, focusing on discovery, joy of leaning and holistic development.

• Learning dispositions are positive behaviours and attitudes that help lay a strong foundation for children to become lifelong learners.

• Our school focuses on these 5 areas: Joy of Learning, Curiosity, Responsibility, Never Give Up and Humility. Of these 5, we have 3 Learning Dispositions that are aligned to our school’s values.

Programme for Active Learning (PAL)

• 2-hour weekly programme for Primary 1 and 2 students

• PAL experiences are firmly grounded by the school’s 6 ENRICH school values, as depicted by the roots of the tree in the PAL framework.

• The tree is then supported by a strong tree trunk that signifies the support we give to our students. Each lesson is highly experiential, creative, and focused on Social Emotional Learning of our students. Lessons are also specially designed so that students will find them enjoyable.

• Outcome of PAL is to nurture confident, curious, and cooperative students. They will be the fruits of our programme who will grow into confident and cooperative communicators who care and contribute to our society. At the end of the day, it is to prepare them to face a future that is volatile and complex!

1. Students succeed when schools and parents work hand in hand to support students in learning self-management skills, taking responsibility and building resilience.

2. Mutual respect and trust form the strong foundation for positive engagement between schools and parents.
