History of Standards and

Assessment

History of Academic Standards

● Academic Standards

No standards/district created standards

to

1996 NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards

to

2010 Common Core (National) State Standards (CCSS)

● Common Core Standards

○ Aligned to college and career expectations

○ Internationally benchmarked

○ Higher-order skills

History of State Assessments

● Federal Regulations require states to assess students’

progress towards standards

● State regulations require districts to administer

standardized assessments

● District funding is contingent on at least 95% student

participation

Partnership for

Assessment of

Readiness for College

And Careers

What is PARCC?42 States and Washington D.C.

have adopted the Common Core Standards

In the 2016-17 school year, 11 partners are participating in the PARCC assessment system. These include seven fully-participating states (Colorado, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland,New Jersey, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. In addition, the Bureau of Indian Education, Department of Defense schools, Massachusetts and Louisiana also are also participating at varying levels.

As was the case in the 2015-16 testing year, the PARCC assessments will be

shorter and the administration has been simplified. Testing has been streamlined

into a single window. The tests have been reduced by 90 minutes; unit times are

more uniform, and the number of test units will be reduced by two or three,

depending upon grade level.

The test is 90 minutes shorter — 60 minutes less for mathematics and 30 minutes

less for English language arts/literacy

Fewer test sessions — now only six or seven test sessions for students, compared

to eight or nine last year

One testing window, instead of two

•Test Dates – Single 30 Day Testing Window

• Fewer But Longer Unit Times

• More Uniform Unit Times

Purpose and Use of PARCC Data…

To assist teachers in supporting students

To inform parents and students on progress towards “on

track” college and career readiness

To inform schools and districts on curricula, instructional and

professional development needs

By NJ’s college and universities as one of the indicators of

a student’s readiness for entry-level, credit-bearing college

courses

May be used for high school graduation requirements

PARCC Results Will Not Be Used…

• Delivered on the computer testing platform.

• Identified and “turned on” prior to testing, via each

student’s Student Registration/Personal Needs Profile

(SR/PNP).

• Ensures each student receives appropriate features

without distraction of un-needed features.

• Once identified by SR/PNP, each student will decide

whether or not to use the feature.

• Tutorials for features, navigation, and tools are
