Wednesday, December 12th me and Alessandro were invited to the first Open Drink organized by Francesco Cingolani at the Coworking spaces of Super Belleville in Paris, which will open its doors officially in January 2013.For each of these events, it has been chosen a theme, a current topic that could drive a debate and an exchange of ideas between participants coming from various experiences and fields of interest.

Mercoledì 12 dicembre siamo stati invitati a partecipare al primo Open Drink organizzato da Francesco Cingolani negli spazi di co-working di Super Belleville a Parigi, che apriranno ufficialmente le loro porte a partire da gennaio 2013.Per ciascuno di questi eventi è stato scelto un filo conduttore, un tema attuale che possa innescare una discussione e uno scambio di idee tra i partecipanti, provenienti da esperienze e campi d’interesse molteplici.

Wednesday, December 12 me and Alessandro were invited to the first Open Drink organized by Francesco Cingolani at the coworking spaces of Super Belleville in Paris, which will open its doors officially in January 2013. For each of these events, it has been chosen a theme, a current topic that could drive a debate and an exchange of ideas between participants coming from various experiences and fields of interest.

The first thing that is worth to be explored is the place where this informal meeting took place, the new coworking spaces of Super Belleville.Let’s try to understand what “co-working” means. And Francesco helps us. “First of all, a co-working space is an empty space. A platform for creation without any a priori definition. A container designed to welcome creative people, artists, architects and allow their experimentation, collaboration and the sharing of certain values, such as the passion for our work. The famous, simple but true words: “do what you love to do.” The utopia, which can also be transformed into a dystopia about work as something that is not separated from our passions and our life.” Then, we could say that co-working is not only about space, but it is about people, inspired by community, networking, collaboration, accessibility and openness. Co-working is a vibrant community of like-minded professionals and entrepreneurs, a community that changes and mutates, a community that lives through the network that it creates and feeds, extending to other coworking organizations and networking groups. It is open to ideas and projects from different disciplines and promotes contamination. Exchange, creativity, research and innovation are interwoven and amplified with a particular attention to cooperation. Per ciascuno di questi eventi è stato scelto un filo conduttore, un tema attuale che possa innescare una discussione e uno scambio di idee tra i partecipanti, provenienti da esperienze e campi d’interesse molteplici.

Il primo aspetto che merita di essere approfondito è il luogo in cui si è svolto questo incontro informale: i nuovi spazi di co-working Super Belleville.Cerchiamo di capire cosa significa “co-working”. E Francesco, ci da una mano.“Il co-working è innanzitutto uno spazio vuoto. Una piattaforma per la creazione senza nessuna definizione a priori. Un contenitore concepito per accogliere creativi, artisti, architetti e permettere loro la sperimentazione, la collaborazione e la condivisione di alcuni valori, come quello della passione per i nostri lavori. Il famoso, semplicistico ma vero, ”fai quello che ami”. L’utopia, che può anche trasformarsi in distopia, del lavoro come qualcosa che non sia separato dalle nostre passioni e dalla nostra vita.”Potremmo quindi dire che il Co-working non si limita allo spazio, ma si volge alle persone, ispirato da comunità, networking, collaborazione, accessibilità e orizzontalità.Il Co-working è una comunità vibrante di professionisti, una comunità che cambia, muta e si rinnova, una comunità che vive attraverso il network che crea e alimenta, allargandolo ad altri co-working o a persone potenzialmente interessate e interessanti.Ospita idee e progetti provenienti da differenti discipline e ne promuove la contaminazione e lo scambio, creatività, ricerca e innovazione si intrecciano e si amplificano in un’ottica di cooperazione. Il co-working è accessibile a chiunque abbia una passione, un talento, un’idea, un progetto o semplicemente, un sogno. Ed è aperto, fondato sulla collaborazione e non sulla competizione.

on collaboration and not on competition.The world in which we live can be defined as a beta-world, or a world where we test ideas, concepts and projects, where the freedom to create is the engine of our evolution and everyday creativity increases its social, cultural but also economical value.Informal and creative spaces of Super Belleville, conceived as an open platform for architects, designers and artists, inspired an horizontal exchange of ideas between all participants and offered the great opportunity of meeting and contamination between different visions and disciplines on the issue “Parametric Thinking and Inclusive Participation”.

Today, new technologies enable to build and manage large amounts of informations and interesting data streams coming from different areas and investing various spheres of our daily life. Social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, are digital tools that we can use every day. They bring us closer to the design process, helping us to understand the difference between euclidean and generative methods, the same difference that exists today between a paper and a tablet. The generative design processes have nothing in common with traditional models of the industrial era, based on the division of social and physical spaces, infact they generate an infinite chain of relationships and involve an infinite system of spaces. Through the power of computational tools , increasingly sophisticated, we are now able to simulate the behavior of highly complex and open ecosystems that characterize our daily reality. A reality that is hyper-connected and incredibly dense and infused with information in the form of data.

Il mondo in cui viviamo può essere definito come un mondo in beta, ossia un mondo dove si testano idee, concetti e progetti, in cui la libertà di creare è il motore dell’evoluzione e la creatività accresce ogni giorno il suo valore, sociale, culturale ma anche economico.Gli spazi informali e creativi di Super Belleville, concepiti come una piattaforma aperta ad architetti, designers e artisti, hanno quindi ispirato uno scambio di idee orizzontale tra tutti i partecipanti all’evento e hanno offerto un’opportunità di incontro e contaminazione tra diverse visioni e discipline rispetto all’attualissimo tema “Parametric Thinking and Inclusive Partecipation”.

Oggi, le nuove tecnologie consentono di generare e gestire una quantità di informazioni sempre più notevole, flussi di dati che provengono da innumerevoli ambiti o canali, e investono le più disparate sfere del nostro vissuto quotidiano. I social network, come Facebook e Twitter, sono gli strumenti digitali che usiamo quotidianamente e che maggiormente ci avvicinano al processo di progettazione e ci aiutano a comprendere la differenza tra i metodi euclidei e generativi, la stessa differenza che esiste tra il foglio di carta e il tablet. I modelli di progettazione generativa non hanno nulla in comune con i tradizionali modelli dell’epoca industriale basati sulla delimitazione di spazi fisici e sociali, ma generano una catena infinita di relazioni e coinvolgono un sistema infinito di spazi. E grazie alle potenzialità computazionali di tools sempre più evoluti, siamo oggi in grado di simulare il funzionamento e il comportamento di ecosistemi altamente complessi ed aperti che caratterizzano la nostra realtà quotidiana, iperconnessa ed incredibilmente densa e pervasa dalle informazioni sotto forma di dati.

Quindi ci siamo chiesti cosa accade quando queste nuove tecnologie, legate sopratutto alla comunicazione istantanea, consentono di introdurre i cittadini e gli utenti nel dibattito sulla città, l’architettura e i suoi usi. Ci siamo confrontati sul tema della progettazione parametrica che

permette la creazione di oggetti, edifici e città sempre più sensibili e reattivi ai flussi di dati e informazioni che le persone e le cose generano. In questo contesto: Qual è il ruolo dell’architetto e del designer? Come gli utenti possono, in modo appropriato, inserirsi nel processo di discussione, progettazione e realizzazione?

In tale scenario contemporaneo l’individuo riscopre la necessità e la potenza della condivisione, nonché il valore della collettività. L’utente può realmente entrare a far parte e gestire i processi che lo coinvolgono, ponendo fine al dominio incontrastato dell’architetto nella modificazione dell’ambiente e aprendo ad una nuova dimensione olistica della progettazione. Compito di architetti e designer diviene quindi quello di indagare le potenzialità dei software generativi per costruire processi e ideare nuovi modelli di spazio fisico interattivo, intelligente e “senseable” tramite l’enorme flusso di dati proveniente dalle città e dagli abitanti in tempo reale. L’architetto in questo scenario assume il ruolo chiave di “guida”, di accompagnatore, perdendo finalmente il suo ruolo impositivo verso un atteggiamento aperto e orizzontale, come l’evoluzione della nostra società suggerisce.

La nostra partecipazione a questo evento è stata anticipata dal nostro percorso di ricerca rispetto a queste tematiche, cominciato con la nostra tesi “Marghera Multi.Faces, un futuro inclusivo e relazionale per Porto Marghera”. Una ricerca che si è posta come obiettivi principale capire il ruolo dell’architettura generativa e parametrica all’interno del dibattito architettonico contemporaneo e comprendere il ruolo delle risorse umane nei processi orizzontali di progettazione che prediligono l’apertura e l’inclusione sociale, rispetto alla chiusura e alla paura per la diversità. La visione che è scaturita dall’intreccio di questi due temi ci ha consentito di investigare le potenzialità dei nuovi strumenti di comunicazione, ricezione e produzione dati, nonché la loro elaborazione attraverso l’utilizzo di software

We discussed about the issue of parametric design that allows the creation of objects, buildings and cities more and more sensitive and responsive to the flow of data and information, that people and things generate. In this context: What is the role of the architect and designer? How users can enter, in a valuable way, in the process of discussion, design, and construction?

In this contemporary scenario the individual discovers the necessity and the power of sharing, and also the value of the community. The user can actually join and manage processes where he is involved, ending the undisputed domain of the architect in changing the environment and so, opening up a new dimension of holistic design. Task of architects and designers becomes to investigate the potential of generative software for building processes and conceiving new models of physical space, that will be interactive, intelligent and senseable to the huge flow of data from the cities and the population in real time. The architect assumes the key role of guide, finally losing his despotic role towards an open and horizontal attitude, as the evolution of our society suggests.

Our participation in this event has been anticipated by our researches about these issues, started with our thesis “Marghera Multi.Faces, an inclusive and relational future for Porto Marghera”. This research had two main objectives: understanding the role of generative and parametric architecture in the contemporary architectural debate and understanding the role of human resources in the horizontal processes of design that enhances openness and inclusion, instead of fear for diversity.The vision arising from the interweaving of these two issues has allowed us to investigate the
