The course takes a holistic approach so in addition to covering the theoretical and practical skills required to use syringe pumps safely it will also include psychological and social perspectives around using syringe pumps within the context of end of life care. There will be opportunity for delegates to discuss issues and ask questions during the session. Fee: £35* Suitable for: Registered nurses and doctors who use syringe pumps in their care for patients. Please note: participants will need to arrange to be observed in their own place of work by someone able to certify competency in that environment. All sessions are from 13:30pm – 16:00pm Verification of Expected Death This session is for registered nursing staff who have organisational support to verify a patient’s expected death. The session will look at differences between certification and verification and offer practical guidelines for verification. Fee: £25* Suitable for: Registered Nurses, Team Leaders and Clinical Managers All sessions are from 14:00pm – 16:00pm PLEASE NOTE: Places are limited on all courses and booking is essential. Education at St John’sThis brochure has been developed to give you an overview of courses available from the St John’s Hospice Education Team. We are continually developing and updating our courses to ensure they remain relevant and that they incorporate the latest key legislation which informs best practice in care delivery. Throughout the year we will be adding dates and courses to our training calendar in response to training needs identified within the health & social care sector in our area. If there is specific training you would like delivered, which you can’t see here, please contact the Education Team, and we will be happy to discuss developing bespoke courses specific to your organisation. This can be delivered here at St John’s or within your own workplace as required. We look forward to working with you.

Advance Care Planning and Communication SkillsFacilitator’s Training CourseA new 2-day train the trainers course for health & social care staff who wish to train as ACP Champions and Facilitators in their own workplace.

Fee: Places have been funded by NHS England for Health & Social Care staff working within North Lancashire and South Cumbria.Suitable for: There is a selection criteria and application form to be completed to be considered for this course. Further details are available from the Education Team.

Advance Care Planning and Communication Skills Study DayThis study day is available for all frontline health & social care staff and looks in detail at advance care planning and the communication skills required for these sensitive and difficult conversations.

Fee: There is no charge for Health & Social Care staff working within North Lancashire and South Cumbria.Suitable for: All frontline staffAll sessions are from 9:30am to 4:30pm

Basic Life SupportThis half-day course covers CPR training and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED Training Model)

Fee: £35*Suitable for: Registered Nurses, Team Leaders and Clinical ManagersAll sessions are from 9:30am to 12:30pm

CDP 1: Care of the Dying Person Study DayDeveloped collaboratively with Palliative Care Specialists across Morecambe, this study day focuses on best practice for the care of the dying person in their last days and hours of life. The programme includes: Advance Care Planning and the Mental Capacity Act, Communication, Symptom Management, Nutrition & Hydration and Bereavement.

Fee: Free to Health & Social Care staff working within North Lancashire, South Lakes and UHMB localities.Suitable for: Some dates are for Health Care Support Staff, Care Assistants and Allied Health Professionals. Other dates are for Registered Nurses, Team Leaders and Clinical Managers. See timetable.All sessions are from 9:30am to 4:30pm

CDP 2: Symptom ManagementThis study day is a follow up to the Care of the Dying Person Study Day and offers a more in-depth programme around Symptom Management at end of life.

Fee: Free to Health & Social Care staff working within North Lancashire, South Lakes and UHMB localities.Suitable for: Registered Nurses, Team Leaders and Clinical ManagersAll sessions are from 9:30am to 4:30pm

Dementia Friends Information SessionEach information session lasts around an hour and is run by a volunteer Dementia Friends Champion. You will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia friendly communities. If you would like a Dementia Friends Information session delivered in your own workplace, please contact us.

Fee: FreeSuitable for: All frontline staffAll sessions are from 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Lunchtime LearningOur 1 hour lunchtime learning sessions offer you the opportunity to hear from experts in their field covering a range of topics including breathlessness, constipation and malignant bowel obstruction, DNACPR and palliative care emergencies.

Fee: Free

Suitable for: Free to Health & Social Care staff working within North Lancashire, South Lakes and UHMB localities.All sessions are from 1:00pm to 2:00pm
