MISSION STATEMENT:

“Growing in Grace, Gratitude and Giving”

May 27, 2018 - The Most Holy Trinity Gospel Meditation

Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture

Happy Trinity Sunday! In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus declare together all three Persons of the Trinity. “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

When we speak of the Trinity, two different theological words are sometimes used: immanent and economic. The immanent Trinity is the life of the three Persons within themselves, the inner harmonious relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. WE see this in the Gospels when Jesus speaks of his Father and promises to send the Holy Spirit. The term “economic” has its roots in the Greek word oikonomia, roughly meaning “household management.” The economic Trinity is our three-Personed God’s relationship with creation; it is creation and redemption and ongoing relationship with us.

Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to imitate God’s immanence by giving and receiving love with one another in community. However, this is not limited only to those close to us, though that’s where love often starts. WE also imitate the economy of God when we go out, when we extend our love and care in a life-giving way. “Go therefore?”

Every believer is sent on mission. Every believer is invited to follow Jesus and the Apostles “to the nations,” to the margins, to the people who require a little extra reach. This could be a distant relative, the residents of your local homeless shelter or even the forgotten neighbor next door! When we love well, we create something beautiful-a relationship, a holy moment, a foretaste of heaven. This Trinity Sunday, take some time to examine the relationships in your life. How well do you love those nearest to you? How well do you reach out to those farther away? How are you creating something beautiful?

The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is a mystery to be pondered. It is not one easily explained. But in essence, it is a mystery as to why God loves us so and gives himself to us. And maybe a little paragraph from the Catechism of the Catholic Church might help explain it better: The Father of the Church distinguishes between the theology (theologia) and economy (oikonomia). “Theology” refers to the mystery of God’s inmost life with the Blessed Trinity and “Economy” to all the works by which God reveals himself and communicates his life. Through the “economy” the “theology” is revealed to us; but conversely, the “theology” illuminates the whole “economy”. God’s works reveal who he is in himself; the mystery of his inmost being enlightens our understanding of all his works. So it is, analogously, among human person. A person discloses himself in his actions, and the better we know a person, the better we understand his actions. (CCC para 236) In essence we know God because he told us who he is, for example, when God revealed himself to Moses. This is “theology”. It is God giving us a sense of his own life. But as creatures, we come to know God because of his saving works (economy) for example, God gave us his only Son, born of a woman, God forgives sins, God sends his Spirit into the world etc. The works of God cause us to contemplate on the mystery of God’s love for us and in doing so we go back to theology and try to theologize as to who the Trinity is because of what God has revealed to us. Now that I’ve confused you even further, let’s go back to the Catechism which teaches us this: Paragraph 266: “Now this is the Catholic faith: We worship one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity, without either confusing the persons or diving the substance; for the person of the Father is one, the Son’s is another, the Holy Spirit’s another; but the Godhead of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal” (Athanasian Creed). And in Paragraph 267: “Inseparable in what they are, the divine persons are also inseparable in what they do. But within the single divine operation each shows forth what is proper to him in the Trinity, especially in the divine missions of the Son’s Incarnation and the gift of the Holy Spirit.” A mystery indeed, but one we believe. God never ceases to surprise us in his works and the mystery of who he is will continue to frustrate our plans to make him less than he is. God is more than we could ever imagine; God’s love is more than we could ever hope for. God is eternal and God is always good to us.

Why Do We Do That? Catholic Traditions Explained

Question:

What is a sacramental seal and where did it come from?

Answer:

Leaving more than just a memory, there are some events in our life that are truly transforming, making us different people. The same thing can be said of spiritual things, especially sacraments. A sacramental seal or character is a theological concept to describe the life-changing and permanent effect of three sacraments on the person: baptism, confirmation, and holy orders. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that these sacraments confer a seal “by which the Christian shares in Christ’s priesthood and is made a member of the Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to Christ and the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible” (#1121). Once we receive these sacraments, we are forever changed. It’s a spiritual “point of no return” where by we take a step forward in our faith journey. We are marked as people of faith, as those who have received the Spirit and as those called to serve in ordained ministry. That is why these sacraments are received only once. The direction is set, the choice is made, and we are called by God to be his people. Nothing can change that, not even our own sinfulness.

In response to the May 18 school shooting at a Houston-area high school, Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston said the archdiocesan community would “unite to support and offer healing to those affected.”

“As a society, we must strive for a way to end such acts of senseless gun violence in our schools and communities,” he added in a May 18 statement.

The cardinal said he was “deeply saddened” and that his prayer and the prayers of Catholics in the archdiocese are with the “victims and families of those killed and injured in this horrific tragedy.”

In a separate statement as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal DiNardo said: “Our community and our local church joins an ever-growing list of those impacted by the evil of gun violence. I extend my heartfelt prayers, along with my brother bishops, for all of those who have died, their families and friends, those who were injured, and for our local community.”

“Sadly, I must yet again point out the obvious brokenness in our culture and society, such that children who went to school this morning to learn and teachers who went to inspire them will not come home,” Cardinal DiNardo said in his statement as USCCB president. “We as a nation must, here and now, say definitively: no more death!”

He prayed that “the Lord of life” would be “with us in our sorrow and show us how to honor the precious gift of life and live in peace.”

Bishop Michael F. Burbridge of Arlington, Virginia, said in a May 18 tweet: “Please keep the victims of the Houston-area school shooting in your prayers. Pray also for their family members and friends who now begin a tragic grieving process. For those killed, grant eternal rest unto them, O Lord, and bestow grace and strength to all in their community.”

Pope Francis’ Prayer for Peace

Lord God of peace, hear our prayer! We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain. Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: “Never again war!”; “With war everything is lost.” Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace. Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness. Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words “division,” “hatred” and “war” be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be “brother,” and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam! Amen.

CSA 2018: Opening the Doors to

Grow in Christ

With the help of all our parishioners working together as one, we will not only reach our target goal but we will be able to fund the cement work on the main church steps. On this Feast of the Most Holy Trinity we remember how God first loved us and calls us to love one another. In loving one another we “do good” for each other for “doing good” is a synonym for “love”. CSA is our way of Opening the Doors to Grow in Christ for each other. In the works, ministries and services of the CSA we “do good” to more people than we can ever imagine and call forth the best our church has to offer to the world.

Please be generous to the CSA. The work of the church is more necessary than ever. Society needs to hear the words of the Church more than ever before. In hope and in charity we “do good” for others and may our good deeds, done in the name of the Lord, produce a new people, a new society renewed by grace, enlivened by doing good for others and always coming together to thank God for the blessings bestowed us, his people.

CSA Minute: Marriage and Family Ministry

Engaged couples across the Archdiocese of Detroit have been preparing for summer nuptials through marriage preparation programs.

Catholic marriage is a calling from God to a shared vocation of life and love. CSA gifts allow the archdiocesan Office for Marriage and Family Ministry to advise couples of the steps necessary to seek marriage in the Catholic Church, including completing marriage preparation programs to help build a foundation for this important sacrament.

The office also offers programs that enrich and nurture couples in every stage of the family life cycle.

For more information about this and other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org.

Missionary Disciples

Commentary by, Mary McGlone, Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet

When the bishops of Latin America met in 2007 in Aparecida, Brazil, they proclaimed that “The church is called to a deep and profound rethinking of its mission… confirming, renewing, and revitalizing the newness of the Gospel rooted in our history.” That statement comes from the bishops’ document called “Disciples and Missionaries,” a title which suggests that you can’t be one without the other. The document’s final version was written by committee of bishops under the leadership of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio now known as Pope Francis.

Although today’s feast, the Soleminity of the Most Holy Trinity, sounds as if it might call us into the heady heights of dogmatic discourse, the readings invite us into a decidedly practical, down-to-earth reflection, not only on God, but on who we are as disciples. Moses is the first person to address us in today’s Liturgy of the Word. We get to eavesdrop on a homily he preached to inspire his people to strengthen their commitment. If we listen as heirs of his tradition, we hear him call us to remember our own experiences of God. He took his people through their memories of the Exodus and hearing God’s voice. That suggests that we, too, might recall how and when we have been aware of God’s presence, of God’s love, of God’s grandeur. He’s recommending that we allow this Sabbath to claim some of our time so that we can remember and appreciate the ways we have come to know God in our individual and communal lives. When we do that, we will be well prepared to sing, “Blessed the people the Lord has chosen!” Paul’s Letter to the Romans advances Moses’ message by pointing out how God’s own Spirit is active in us. Francis Thompson’s poem, “The Hound of Heaven,” offers a meditative image of what Paul is suggesting. Thompson portrays God as the heavenly hound who never ceases trying to lure us toward our divine destiny. Paul tells us we know God’s Spirit as the one who leads us to seek Abba, the God we know as a loving parent. Today’s Gospel, the last lines of the Gospel of Matthew, portrays the post-resurrection group of disciples as a broken community who waver between worship and doubt, a description that also describes many in our own day. The disciples had followed the instructions of their companions, the women who had been told by both the angel at the tomb and by Jesus where the Lord wanted to meet them. When they met the risen Christ, he explained what his resurrection meant by saying that all power in heaven and earth was his. He was victorious and if they believed in him and in his promise to remain with them, they would also believe that no evil can overcome him - or them. Little wonder that disciples both worship and doubt! Believing in Christ implies that they must also believe in themselves as his disciples. The risen Lord believes in his disciples enough to hand on his mission, telling them to make their faith contagious, to spread the good news not as dogma, but in the form of vibrant and attractive love and hope - the only powers capable of transforming ordinary people into other Christs. The wavering disciples who gathered on that mountain did go out to preach and that made it possible for their faith to overpower their doubts. They had in invent how to carry forth Jesus’ message when he was no longer with them as a living prophet, a faithful son of Israel. It was only through that process that they could discover how he was with them in other, more universal ways. The first disciples had to do in their day what the bishops at Aparecida are calling the church to do in our day. Like them, we need to rethink our mission. As heirs to Moses, we are called to renew and confirm the faith we have received. Knowing that the Spirit is ever with us, we need to take the time necessary to hear the Spirit’s urgings, to allow ourselves to be lured toward the God who made us and calls us into an unknown but marvelous future. As people chosen and loved by God, we are called to fulfill our vocation as disciples and missionaries, followers of Christ who spread his message and love. Like the early disciples, we must be willing to rethink our mission and revitalize our Gospel message. Moses tells us that we begin by gratefully remembering God’s works of creation and liberation. Paul assures us that the Spirit will urge us toward our goal. Most of all, the risen Lord promises to remain with us. Although we may not explain it as such, the process of being disciples and missionaries is what allows our triune God to live in us and work through us.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Creator Spirit, Come and bless us with Your heavenly grace. You are called by the names of Paraclete, Gift of God Most High, Spring of Life, Fire, Love, and the Soul Anointing. You are the finger of the Father’s right hand. You are the clear promise of the Father. Give our human tongues the grace of inspired speech. Kindle your Light in our minds, pour Your Love into our hearts, and uphold with Your Unfailing Strength the frailty of our human nature. Drive our enemy far from us and give us Your gift of peace. Ever guiding us, may we be always the stewards of Your Love. Grant that through You, Most Holy Spirit, we may know the Father and the Son, and our faith professing, God Three in One. Holy Spirit of Love, teach us that stewardship is the disciple’s response. Amen.

Prince of Peace Food Pantry Needs

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was

thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Matthew 25:35New American Bible (Revised Edition)

Through your kindness, we have a fairly well-stocked food pantry here at Prince of Peace, enabling our Christian Service Office to reach out with love to those in need. We are, however, in need of a few items to “round out” the selection on the shelves. We could particularly use the following at this current time: Canned tuna and chicken; pasta and sauce; macaroni and cheese; canned beef stew; canned beans; shelf stable milk; feminine hygiene products. PLEASE, NO OUTDATED/EXPIRED ITEMS OR OPENED PACKAGES! Donations may be placed in the food bin in the church gathering space. Thank you for caring and sharing!

Prince of Peace - Ground Clean-up

The weather held out on Tuesday, May 15, and 25 “Master” gardeners (doing God’s work, caring for creation) helped to spiff up the Prince of Peace parish grounds by pulling weeds, cleaning up dead foliage and debris, trimming back plants and shrubs, and the like. After all the hard work, the group gathered together for prayer, pizza, and fellowship. A huge THANK YOU to all who joined us; your helping hands were much appreciated, and the grounds look great!!!

Be at Peace

Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather, look to them, with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father, who cares for you today, will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imagination.

St. Francis de Sales

Prayer for our troops - All-powerful and ever-living God, when Abraham left his native land and departed from his people you kept him safe through all his journeys. Protect these soldiers. Be their constant companion, strength and refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord, that they may return home in safety. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Grant them eternal rest,

O Lord, and let Perpetual light shine

upon them.”

Freedom Prayer

Heavenly Father, on this holiday weekend we give thanks to you for the gift and blessing of the freedom we enjoy in our great nation. We praise you, Lord, for inspiring and guiding our founding fathers as they struggled to build our country and create a new way of living with the goal of freedom and justice for all. We thank you, Lord, for the courageous self-sacrifice and generous spirit of countless people who have given their life’s blood in the defense of freedom and for the pursuit of justice. Keep us faithful to the tradition and example we have inherited; may we leave for the next generation a better world, prepared for the dawning of the Kingdom of Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
