Subject Based Banding (SBB)
Why Subject Based Banding (SBB)?
• Every child will be encouraged to do the subjects at thelevels that best meet his abilities
• To provide more flexibility to students with strengthsand abilities that vary across subjects
Subject Based Banding (SBB)
Subjects:
• Standard (S) subjects: E, M, S and MT
• Foundation (F) subjects: FEL, FMA, FMT, FSc
• Higher Mother Tongue (H): HMT
For HMT, students will sit for both Standard and Higher Mother Tongue examinations.
HCL
• When applying to SAP schools, HCL students will continue to receive an advantage.
• Although HCL results do not count towards the PSLE Score, if students with the same PSLE Score are applying for limited places in the same SAP school, those with better HCL grades will be allocated a place ahead of other students.
Subject Based Banding (SBB)
How does SBB work?
Once parents have selected a subject combination, students will have to take it for at least a year.
Summary
At End of P4School recommends a subject combination based on
P4 examination results and performance. Parents select the preferred subject combination.
At the Start of P5Student takes the selected subject combination
How does SBB work?Students take a subject combination determined by the school at End of P5
Students who do well and meet expectations
Students who do notmeet expectations
Continue with the subject combination
Switch some subjects to foundation level
Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)End of P6
PSLE
PSLE 2021
• From 2021 onwards, the PSLE will be scored with widerbands and the scores will reflect the student’s individualperformance and not his performance relative to his peers.
• The changes are more educationally meaningful inunderstanding your child’s learning at this point in hiseducation journey, and helping him plan his next step.
Wider Scoring Bands to Reduce Fine Differentiation
• Each subject will be scored using 8 bands known as AchievementLevels (AL), with AL 1 being the best score and AL 8 being the lowestscore. The ALs reflect the student’s level of achievement in thesubject.
• The student’s PSLE Score will be the sum of the four subject scores.
• The PSLE Score will range from 4 (best) to 32. There are 29 possiblePSLE Scores, compared to around 200 different T-scores today. Thiswill reduce excessively fine differentiation of students at a youngage.
Wider Scoring Bands to Reduce Fine Differentiation
Scoring for Foundation Level Subjects
• Foundation subject grades will be graded in 3 scoringbands from AL A to C. Like Standard subject ALs, theFoundation subject ALs will reflect a student's level ofachievement, rather than how he has performed relativeto his peers.
• For the purpose of Secondary 1 posting, Foundation levelAL A to AL C will be mapped to AL 6 to AL 8 of Standardlevel subjects respectively, to derive a student's overallPSLE Score.
Scoring for Foundation Level Subjects
Eligibility for Secondary School Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL)
• The eligibility criteria for taking HMTL isintended to ensure that students can copewith the higher academic load, and takesreference from the current criteria.
• For students who do not meet the criteria (seetable), secondary schools will continue to havethe flexibility to offer HMTL to students, if theyare assessed to have high ability and interestin MTL and are able to take HMTL withoutaffecting their performance in other subjects
Indicative Achievement Level (AL) Cut-Off Points (COPs)
• To support parents and students in making informedsecondary school choices, MOE will provide information oneach secondary school's indicative COP in AL terms in thefirst half of 2021.
• These AL COPs will be derived from the PSLE Scores andchoice patterns of the 2020 Secondary 1 posting exercise.
Direct School Admission (DSA)
Objectives of Direct School Admission
• To give schools greater flexibility in student admission
• To allow a more diverse range of talents and achievementsto be recognised
• To allow schools the flexibility to consider students withabilities not reflected in the PSLE range
Direct School Admission

• Criteria is determined by each individual secondary school
