Last year in this introduction, I wrote about the apparently endless, universal capabilities of the piano – the instrument’s status as both a solo orator and a congenial conversationalist, a vessel for self-absorbed introspection and unbounded, triumphant communication.

Perhaps those qualities are connected more with the musician seated on the piano stool than with the mechanics of the instrument itself. It is pianists – even more than pianos – that wow us with their poetry and passion. And a constant stream of talented pianists emerging from all corners of the world continues to captivate audiences and inspire future players.

At this, the 22nd Oxford Piano Festival, we have plenty such pianists joining us, as well as returning guests and distinguished associates. We welcome pianists from all corners of the world – from Brazil, Russia, the United States, Canada and Europe – to play repertoire spanning three centuries.

It is a particular joy to see alumni of the Festival return for a special concert on 2 August. Between them, these bright young pianists will traverse five of Beethoven’s most varied sonatas as a prelude to Paul Lewis’s

performance of two titled sonatas and the Diabelli Variations later that evening – a fitting way to mark 250 years since the birth of the composer who transformed the piano sonata.

As well as young talent, we have some highly distinguished guests at this year’s festival. Nelson Freire, one the finest Brahms players alive, makes his Festival debut in a performance of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, which it is my privilege and pleasure to conduct. Elisabeth Leonskaja, a towering pianist and prolific recording artist, also makes her Festival debut in the opening concert on 1 August. A champion of unusual and contemporary repertoire, Alain Lefèvre also joins us for the first time.

I am particularly proud that the Festival has a habit of cultivating long-term friendships. We look forward to seeing old friends Nikolai Lugansky and Richard Goode, while our masterclass series will include Vanessa Latarche, Yoheved Kaplinsky and Menahem Pressler. To be so strongly associated with a pianist of Menahem’s standing, who is Lifetime President of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, is testament to the ambitions of all concerned. Join all of us this August, as we once again celebrate the piano in all its diversity and brilliance.

Freire was nominated Soloist of the Year in 2003 by the French Victoires de la Musique; in 2005 he received their special Honours Award. In 2007, Freire was appointed a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 2011 was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur.

Richard Goode has been hailed for music-making of tremendous emotional power, depth and expressiveness, and is recognised worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of Classical and Romantic music. In recital,

Goode performs at major musical centres and festivals across the US and Europe. As a soloist, he has performed with most of the major orchestras including the New York, Los Angeles and London Philharmonic Orchestras. An exclusive Nonesuch artist, Goode’s latest recording of the five Beethoven concertos with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer was described as ‘a landmark recording’ by the Financial Times and nominated for a Grammy award. His 1993 10-CD set of the complete Beethoven sonatas, the first-ever by an American-born pianist, was nominated for a Grammy, chosen for the Gramophone Good CD Guide and re-released in 2017. Goode is a highly respected mentor of young musicians and frequently leads masterclasses at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions.

Ian Jones is a Professor of Piano and Deputy Head of Keyboard at the Royal College of Music. His career as a Steinway Artist has taken him to all five continents for concerts and broadcasts, including

acclaimed performances in London with the Royal Philharmonic and National Symphony Orchestras. His world premiere performances and recordings of music by British composer Rebecca Clarke have received enthusiastic attention. On the recent release of his CD, Chopin: Summer in Nohant, Classic FM Magazine drew comparison with Rubinstein and Arrau, whilst BBC Music Magazine described his playing as having ‘a lyrical elegance and unselfconscious purity of expression’. Yoheved Kaplinsky has appeared throughout the world as a recitalist, in chamber music concerts and with orchestras. She began her musical career as a prize-winner in the J.S. Bach International Competition in

Washington, D.C. Noted for her insight and understanding of piano technique, Dr Kaplinsky has been in great demand for lectures and masterclasses, and as an adjudicator in international competitions. She holds the Susan W. Rose Chair of Juilliard’s Piano Department and is also Director of its Pre-College Division. She has been a juror for competitions worldwide including BBC Young Musician of the Year.

Praised by the Washington Post for combining ‘staggering technical prowess, a sense of command and depth of expression,’ pianist George Li possesses a brilliant virtuosity far beyond his years. Li has performed with

leading orchestras including the Los Angeles, New York, London, and Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the San Francisco, Tokyo, Sydney and Montreal Symphony, and conductors including Dudamel, Gaffigan, Gergiev, Gimeno, Honeck, Orozco-Estrada, Petrenko, Robertson, Slatkin, Temirkanov, Tilson Thomas, Long Yu and Xian Zhang. Now an exclusive recording artist for Warner Classics, his discography covers a vast repertoire, from John Corigliano’s Piano Concerto considered as the ‘reference version’ (BBC Music Magazine), to Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with Kent Nagano, ‘a crisply executed and superb recording’ (Gramophone).

For decades now, Elisabeth Leonskaja has been among the most celebrated pianists of our time. In a world dominated by the media, Elisabeth Leonskaja has remained true to herself and to her music. Music is and

always has been her life’s work. Francisco in 1946, he made his American debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra; performances with the New York, Washington, Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and London Symphony Orchestras followed. Both an outstanding solo and chamber performer, Mr Pressler has collaborated with nearly all the greatest quartets and given lieder recitals with Christoph Pregardien and Matthias Goerne with whom he is recording Schumann’s Dichterliebe for Harmonia Mundi. His 2018 solo recording of French music for Deutsche Grammophon received high critical acclaim. His acclaimed 2014 performance with the Berlin Philharmonic under Rattle was televised worldwide. Concert engagements and masterclasses take him all over Europe, Asia, Israel and America. He holds the position of Distinguished Professor, Charles Webb Chair at Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University Bloomington where he has taught since 1955.

recitals by the foremost pianists of our time in some of Oxford’s most historic venues, a lively social atmosphere, and enthusiastic observers is undoubtedly a winning formula, as previous students have testified:

“ I have forged so many strong friendships and have learnt SO much about playing and appreciating music.”

“ The professors are simply inspiring and the lessons ring on for a long time after the course has finished.”

Many of the legendary names of the 20th century, such as Menahem Pressler and Alfred Brendel, have made their way to Oxford to take part in the Festival, alongside a wealth of significant contemporary pianists.

With Alfred Brendel as the Festival’s Patron, Sir András Schiff as President, and the Festival’s founder, Marios Papadopoulos a renowned pianist himself, the bar is set very high in terms of quality and artistic integrity.

The Oxford Piano Festival’s position as a leading centre for learning is clear from the calibre of soloists and teachers taking part; the clamour for places and keenness of students to return year after year; and its profile in the international music community.

Its objective is simple: to inspire, support and encourage piano music making of the highest quality. It provides gifted young players with a rare opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the world’s finest pianists and teachers, to perform and to learn new repertoire, as part of a dedicated community of artists which encourages exchange and discourages competition.

The concept of the pianist as musician lies at the heart of the Festival. The various roles of the pianist – as virtuoso, chamber musician, accompanist, conductor, academic and teacher – are all examined. In addition, as part of this holistic approach, the various international schools of piano playing are considered.
