    Seven Emirates Of U.A.E

The United Arab Emirates is comprised of seven emirates, which occupy the southeastern corner of the ArabianPeninsula. Each emirate, unique and rich in tradition, is anessential component necessary for making up the whole.

    Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, by far the largest emirate, is

ruled by the Al Nahyan family. It

    occupies 67,340 square kilometres or

86.7% of the total area of the country.

The emirate is primarily a vast desertarea with about two dozen islands in

the coastal waters, including the island

where the city of Abu Dhabi is located,

plus six sizeable islands further out in

the Arabian Gulf. The population of the

emirate is concentrated in three areas:the capital city, Abu Dhabi; Al Ain, an

oasis city located near the Hajar

Mountains; and the villages of the Liwa

    oases.

    Sharjah

Sharjah, which shares its southern border with Dubai,

is ruled by the Al Qasimi family. It is approximately

2,600 square kilometres and is the only emirate to

have coastlines on both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf

of Oman. In the nineteenth century the town of

Sharjah was the leading port in the lower Gulf.Produce from the interior of Oman, India and Persia

arrived there. Sharjah's salt mines meant that salt

constituted an important part of its export business,

along with pearls. In the 1930s when the pearling

industry declined and trade decreased due to the

creek silting up, Imperial Airways' flying boats set up

a staging post for flights en route to India, which

benefited the residents of Sharjah. Today, under theleadership of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al

Qasimi, Sharjah is the cultural and educational centre

of the UAE and takes pride in preserving the

country's cultural heritage as well as promoting Arab

    culture and traditions.

    Ajman

Ajman is the smallest emirate, comprising only 260

square kilometres. It is ruled by the Al Nuami

family. Surrounded mostly by the emirate of

Sharjah, Ajman also possesses the small enclavesof Manama and Musfut in the Hajar Mountains.

Along the creek dhow building was the specialised

trade. Fishing and date-trees provided the local

population with their primary means of

sustenance. Ajman benefited greatly from the

union of the emirates, a fact that is reflected todayin their stately buildings and infrastructure. Sheikh

Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuami has been the ruler

    since 1981.

    Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah, the most northerly emirate,

is ruled by another branch of the Al Qasimi

family. It covers an area of 1,700 square

kilometres. Thanks to the run-off water from

the Hajar Mountains, Ras Al Khaimah has aunique abundance of flora, so it is no surprise

that agriculture is important to the local

economy. The emirate also benefits from its

stone quarries, and fishing, which is plentiful

in the rich waters of the Gulf. The city of Ras

Al Khaimah, situated on an inlet, has a richhistory. It was renowned for its prosperous

port and for its exquisite pearls, which were

famous as being the whitest and roundest

    available anywhere. Ras Al Khaimah's

current ruler is Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed

    Al Qasimi.

    Umm Al Quwain

Umm Al Qaiwain is ruled by the Al Mualla

family. It is the second smallest emirate,

with a total area of around 770 square

    kilometres. Positioned between the

emirates of Sharjah and Ajman to thesouth and Ras Al Khaimah to the north,

Umm Al Qaiwain has the smallest

    population. Fishing is the local

    population's primary means of income.

Date farming also plays a significant role

in the economy. After the union of theemirates in 1971 Umm Al Qaiwain

developed into a modern state, and

continues to progress under its present

ruler, Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Mualla.

    Fujairah

The only emirate without a coastline on the

Arabian Gulf is Fujairah, which is ruled by

the Al Sharqi family. Situated along thecoast of the Gulf of Oman, Fujairah covers

    about 1,300 square kilometres. Unlike

other emirates, where the desert forms a

large part of the terrain, mountains and

    plains are its predominant features.

Fujairah's economy is based on fishing andagriculture. Like Ras Al Khaimah, the land

in Fujairah is irrigated by rainwater from the

Hajar Mountains, making it ideal for

farming. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al

    Sharqi is the present ruler.

    United Arab Emirates

Culture the culture of the United Arab emirate has a diverse, cosmopolitan and multiculturalsociety.[1] The country's cultural imprint as a small, ethnicallyhomogenous pearling community was changed with the arrival of other nationals first bythe Iranians in the early 1900s, and later by Indians and Pakistanis in the 1960s. Majorholidays in Dubai include Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and National Day (2December), which marks the formation of the United Arab Emirates.[3] Emirati culture mainly revolves around the religion of Islam, traditional Arab, and Bedouin

culture. Being a highly cosmopolitan society, the UAE has a diverse and vibrant culture. Theinfluence of Islamic and Arab culture on its architecture, music, attire, cuisine, and lifestyle arevery prominent as well. Five times every day, Muslims are called to prayer fromthe minarets of mosques, which are scattered around the country.[4] The weekend beginson Friday due to Friday being the holiest day for Muslims. Most Muslim countries have aFriday-Saturday or Thursday-Friday weekend.[5] This unique socioeconomic development in the Persian Gulf has meant that the UAE isgenerally more liberal than its neighbors. While Islam is the main religion, Emiratis have beenknown for their religious tolerance, and churches, Hindu temples, Sikh Gurdwara can befound alongside mosques, however there are no Jewish synagogue in the United ArabEmirates. The country is home to several communities that have faced persecutionelsewhere. Cosmopolitan atmosphere is gradually growing. As a result you will find there avariety of Asian-influenced schools, cultural centers, and themed restaurants. Increasingnumber of European centers, schools, and restaurants can be seen in today's UAE.

agriculture Agriculture in the United Arab Emirates, including fishing, was a minorpart of the UAE economy in the early 1990s, contributing less than 4

percent ofGDP. Since the formation of the UAE, the availability of

capital and the demand for fresh produce have encouraged

agricultural development. The main farming areas

are Diqdaqah in Ras al Khaymah, Falaj al Mualla in Umm al Qaywayn,Wadi adh Dhayd in Sharjah, Al Awir in Dubayy, and the coastal area

ofAl Fujayrah. Total cultivable land is around 160,000 hectares.

Most of the UAE's cultivated land is taken up by date palms, which in

the early 1990s numbered about 4 million. They are cultivated in the

arc of small oases that constitute theAl Liwa Oasis.

Both federal and amirate governments provide incentives to farmers.

For example, the government offers a 50 percent subsidyon fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides. It also provides loans

formachinery and technical assistance. The amirates have forty-one

agricultural extension units as well as several experimental

farms and agricultural research stations. The number of farmers rose

from about 4,000 in the early 1970s to 18,265 in 1988.

    Environmental Issues

Environment - current issues: lack of natural freshwater resources compensated

by desalination plants; desertification; beach pollution from oil spills

Definition: This entry lists the most pressing and important environmental

problems. The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the entry:

Acidification - the lowering of soil and water pH due to acid precipitation anddeposition usually through precipitation; this process disrupts ecosystem nutrient

flows and may kill freshwater fish and plants dependent on more neutral or

    alkaline conditions (see acid rain).

Acid rain - characterized as containing harmful levels of sulfur dioxide or

nitrogen oxide; acid rain is damaging and potentially deadly to the earth's fragile

ecosystems; acidity is measured using the pH scale where 7 is neutral, values

greater than 7 are considered alkaline, and values below 5.6 are considered

acid precipitation; note - a pH of 2.4 (the acidity of vinegar) has been measured

    in rainfall in New England.

Aerosol - a collection of airborne particles dispersed in a gas, smoke, or fog.

    20/25

Continue Afforestation - converting a bare or agricultural space by planting

trees and plants; reforestation involves replanting trees on areas

that have been cut or destroyed by fire.

Asbestos - a naturally occurring soft fibrous mineral commonlyused in fireproofing materials and considered to be highlycarcinogenic in particulate form.

Biodiversity - also biological diversity; the relative numberof species, diverse in form and function, at the genetic,

organism, community, and ecosystem level; loss ofbiodiversity reduces an ecosystem's ability to recover from

    natural or man-induced disruption.
