Before assembling the vacuum cleaner,check the PACKING LIST on the cover of
the separate REPAIR PARTS LIST. Usethis list to verify that you have received all
the components of your new Kenmorevacuum cleaner°
HANDLE ASSEMBLYRemove the combination brush from
the handle to expose the handle mount-
ing hole.
Remove the handle screw from the bodyof the vacuum cleaner.
Position the handle assembly as shown inthe illustration below°
When installing the handle, firmly press
the handle onto the body. Secure withhandle screw provided.
Begin to tighten the screw with your fin-gers. tt may be necessary to adjust thehandle slightty_
Using a screwdriver, tighten handle screw_
Reinstall combination brush.

release uppercord hook toeither side and

"Your Kenmore vacuum cleaner is equipped with the latest technology in floor care. TheKenmore inteliCLEAN automatically chooses the right cleaning power for any cleaning
need. Medium power for everyday pickup, High power for normal dirt, and Maximum
power for deep cleaning high traffic areas°
When inteliCLEAN mode is activated the inteliCLEAN indicator is green.
To turn OFF or de-activate inteliCLEAN press the inteliCLEAN button or TOOLS button.
When there is little or no dirt present the dirt
sensor is green, indicating that inteliCLEANpower is at MEDIUM. At MEDIUM power thevacuum cleaner operates at low energy con-
sumption and noise levels.
With normal dirt concentration the dirt sen-
sor is amber, indicating that inteliCLEAN
power is at HIGHo Energy consumptionand noise levels increase.
With heavy dirt concentration the dirt sen-sor is amber and red, indicating that
inteliCLEAN power is at MAXIMUM, Thevacuum cleaner operates at its highest
energy consumption and noise levels.

When the vacuum cleaner is running withnormal air flow, the light on the performanceindicator is off. The light comes on wheneverthe airflow becomes blocked° If that occurs,check the disposable dust bag, motor safetyfilter and other possible clog locations shownin CLOG REMOVAL.
NOTE: The light may come on when usingcertain attachments, due to reduced airflowthrough attachment.
Your Kenmore vacuum cleaner features a
two (2) speed, direct drive agitator forcleaning a variety of floor surfaces, Pleasereview the table below before using yourvacuum cleaner,
I. Do not use the CARPET setting (high
speed) for cleaning berber style car-pet. The high agitator speed coulddamage the carpet or cause excessivecarpet wear.

Use the GENTLE setting (low speed)ONLY for berber or delicate pile car-peting. The agitator may slow down orstop on thick carpeting, area rugs orthrow rugs. If agitator stops and doesnot restart, see AGITATOR MOTOROVERLOAD PROTECTOR.
The FLOOR setting may be used for
all indoor bare floors including wood,tile, linoleum, slate etc.

To select a pile height setting:
Turn off vacuum cleaner, Select a pileheight setting by tilting the cleaner backuntil the front wheels are lifted slightly offthe floor.

There are four (4) pile height settings onthe vacuum cleaner. Use the LOW setting
for most low-pile carpets and bare floorcleaning (with agitator OFF), and theHIGH setting for high-pile carpets like
shag carpet, scatter rugs, etc. Use theother settings as needed for carpetheights in between.

MOTOR PROTECTIONSYSTEMMotor Protector
This vacuum cleaner has a motor protector
by-pass valve which automatically opens toprovide cooling air to the vacuum cleanermotor when a clog prevents the normalflow of air to the motor. The by-pass valve
opens to prevent motor overheating andpossible damage to the vacuum cleaner.You will notice a change of sound as air
rushes through the valve opening
To correct problem install a new dustbag. If using attachments, adjust to
allow for greater air flow.
NOTE: The motor
protector may openwhen usingattachments or
when cleaning new
carpet due toreduced airflow
caused by theMotor Pro rector
attachments (Behind Hose)
themselves or by
new carpet lint fillingthe dust bag quickly. To correct probleminstall a new dust bag. If usingattachments, adjust to allow for greaterair flow.
Note: Do not block motor protector.
Thermal Protector
This vacuum cleaner has a thermal
protector, which automatically trips toprotect both the vacuum cleaner and theagitator motor from overheating. If a clogprevents the normal flow of air to the motor,
the thermal protector turns the motor offautomatically° This allows the motor to coolin order to prevent possible damage to thevacuum cleaner°
To correct problem: Turn the vacuum
cleaner off and unplug the power cord fromthe outlet to allow the vacuum cleaner to
cool and the thermal protector to reset.
Check for and remove clogs, replacebag if necessary. See CLOG REMOVALsection. Also check and replace anyclogged filters.Wait approximately 40-50
minutes before restarting vacuumcleaner.
AGITATOR MOTOR
OVERLOAD PROTECTORThe agitator motor has built-in protectionagainst motor damage should the agitator
jam. if the agitator slows down or stops, theagitator overload
protector shuts offthe agitator motor,,The vacuum

DIRT SENSORThe electronic dirt sensor is a feature
which wilt detect particles as they passthrough the vacuum cleaner.
The dirt sensor indicators are located on
the front of the vacuum cleaner above the
dust bag cover.

• With medium dirt concentration the dirtsensor is amber.
o With heavy concentration the dirtsensor is red and amber.

OPERATION
As you vacuum, the amber and redindicator lights will come on and stay on as
long as the sensor detects a highconcentration of particles passing throughthe vacuum cleaner.
TO CLEAN DIRT SENSOR OPTICS
The dirt sensor optics consist of two opticcells located inside the dust bag port.Occasionally, it may become necessary to
clean the two optic cells to assuremaximum performance,,
It is recommended the optic cells becleaned:
= When the red light stays oncontinuously.
° When dirt or dust adheres to the
optic cells,• Whenever the dust bag is removed.
