CANISTER

1. Open the canister hood.

2. Check to see that the dust bag is properlyinstalled. See BAG CHANGING for instruc-tions.

3. Check to see that the motor safety filter isproperly installed. See MOTOR SAFETY FIL-TER CLEANING for instructions.

HOOD AND TOOL STORAGECOVERIt is normal for the canister hood and toolstorage cover to come off when opened fur-ther than needed. Line up the hinge slots, in-sert the hinges into the slots, and close thehood and tool storage cover to reinstall.

_CAUTIONNever open canister hood with the toolstorage cover open. This will help toprevent damage from occurring to thecanister hood and/or fool storage cover.

To store: Disconnect hose from wands andcanister to prevent stress on hose duringstorage. Store hose in a loosely coiledposition so the hose covering is not stressed.

CAUTIONMoving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DONOT touch the agitator when vacuum cleaner is on.Contacting the agitator whlle it is rotating can cut,bruise or cause other injuries. Always turn off andunplug from electrical outlet before servicing.

HOW TO START 1

WARNINGPersonal injury and Product DamageHazard

DO NOT plug in if switch is in ONposition. Personal injury or propertydamage could result.

The cord moves rapidly whenrewinding. Keep children awayand provide a clear path whenrewinding the cord to preventpersonal injury.

DO NOT use outlets above counters.Damage from cord to items insurrounding area could occur.

1. Pullcord outof canister todesired length.The cord willnot rewind untilthe cordrewind buttonis pushed.

2. Plug the polarized power cord into a 120Volt outlet located near the floor.

NOTE: To reduce the risk of electric shock,this vacuum cleaner has a polarized plug;one blade is wider than the other. This plugwill fit in a polarized outlet only one way. Ifthe plug does not fit fully in the outlet, re-verse the plug. If it still does not fit, contacta qualified electrician to install the properoutlet. Do not change the plug in any way.

To rewind: Unplug the vacuum cleaner.Hold the plug while rewinding to preventdamage or injury from the moving cord.Push cord rewind button.

3. Lower wand from upright position bypressing on the handle release pedal.4. Select a pile height setting by pressingthe small pedal on the rear of the Power-Mate. The pile height setting shows on theindicator. See SUGGESTED PILE HEIGHTSETTINGS.

Attention: Refer to your carpet manufactur-ers cleaning recommendations. Some moredelicate carpets may require that they bevacuumed with the PowerMate agitatorturned off to prevent carpet damage.

5. Select a switch position on the handle.

OFF - turns off both the canister and thePowerMate motors.

FLOOR - turns on the canister motor only.

CARPET - turns on both the canister and thePowerMate motors.

NOTE - When this switch is in the FLOORposition,the headlight DOES NOT functionsince no electricity flows to the PowerMate.

CAUTION

DO NOT leave the PowerMate running inone spot in the upright position for anylength of time. Damage to carpet mayoccur.

CAUTION

Use care if the PowerMate and wand is

left in the upright position as it may tipover easily. Property damage can occur iftipped.

For best cleaning action, the PowerMateshould be pushed straight away from youand pulled straight back. At the end of eachpull stroke, the direction of the PowerMateshould be changed to point into the nextsection to be cleaned. This pattern shouldbe continued across the carpet with slow,gliding motions.

NOTE: Fast, jerky strokesdo not providecomplete cleaning.

The hose swivel allows the hose to turn with-

out moving the canister. This is helpful forcleaning in small areas.

Check hose for twist-ing before pullingcanister.

Use care if canister is placed on stairs. Ifmay fall, causing personal injury orproperty damage.

CAUTION

Product Damage Hazard

Do not pull on the hose to move thecanister from one stair to the next. When

finished cleaning in one area use thehandle grip on the canister to move thevacuum cleaner to a new location for

further cleaning.

Suction

Carpeted stairs need to be vacuumedregularly. For best cleaning results, fullyclose the suction control.

For best cleaning results, keep the airflowpassage open. Check each assemblyarea in REMOVING CLOGSoccasionallyfor clogs. Turn off and unplug vacuumcleaner from outlet before checking.

PERFORMANCE FEATURES

OVERLOAD PROTECTORThe PowerMate hasbuilt-in protectionagainst motor andbelt damage shouldthe agitator jam. ifthe agitator slowsdown or stops, theoverload protectorshuts off the

PowerMate. The canister motor will continueto run.

To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum cleaner, remove obstruction, thenpress BELT RESET button. A ball point penmay be required to press button.

If the problem persists, have the vacuumcleaner serviced by a Sears or otherqualified service agent.

THERMAL PROTECTOR

This vacuum cleaner has a thermalprotector which automatically trips toprotect the vacuum cleaner fromoverheating. If a clog prevents the normalflow of air to the motor, the thermalprotector turns the motor offautomatically. This allows the motor tocool in order to prevent possible damageto the vacuum cleaner.

To correct problem: Turn the vacuumcleaner off and unplug the power cordfrom the outlet to allow the vacuumcleaner to cool and the thermal protectorto reset. Check for and remove clogs, ifnecessary. Also check and replace anydogged filters. Wait approximately thirty(30) minutes and plug the vacuumcleaner in and turn back on to see if themotor protector has reset.

CHECK BAG iNDiCATOR

When the vacuumcleaner is running Check Bag jwith normal

airflow, the CHECKBAG indicator is

green. Theindicator changesto red wheneverthe airf!ow

becomes blocked. If that occurs, checkthe disposable dust bag, motor safetyfilter and other possible clog locationsshown in REMOVING CLOGS.

NOTE: The indicator may turn red whenusing certain attachments, due to reducedairflow through attachment.

SUCTION CONTROLThe suctioncontrol allowsyou to changethe vacuumsuction fordifferentfabrics and Suction Suction

carpet weights.Opening the control decreases suction fordraperies and lightweight rugs, whileclosing the control increases suction forupholsteries and carpets.

EDGE CLEANER

Active brush edgecleaners are on bothsides of thePowerMate. Guideeither side of thePowerMate alongbase-boards or nextto furniture to helpremove dirt trapped atcarpet edges.

SUGGESTED PiLE HEIGHT SETTINGS

For best deep down cleaning, use the XLOsetting. However, you may need to raise theheight to make some jobs easier, such asscatter rugs and some deep pile carpets,and to prevent the vacuum cleaner fromshutting off. Suggested settings are:

HI - Shag, deep pile, or scatter rugs.

MED - Medium to deep pile.

LO - Low to medium pile.

XLO - Most carpets and bare floors.

REMOVING CLOGS

The vacuum cleaner creates suction that _-_picks up dirt. Rapidly moving air carries the //JIS___dirt to the dust bag through the airflow pas- L,(',f_'_Xsages. The dust bag lets the air pass _// ' |

BAG CHANGING

For best cleaning results, the dust bagshould be changed often. The CHECK BAGindicator will change to red when the bagneeds to be changed or the airflow isblocked.

NOTE: See PARTSAND FEATURESfor BagNumber.

1. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner fromwall outlet.

2. Remove hose from canister.

4. Disengagecardboard tab fromred bag mount bypulling away andlifting up.

3. Pull up hoodrelease and liftcanister hood.

6. Check the motor safety filter andreplace, if necessary.

7. The red bag mount will flip forward afterremoving bag. This will prevent the hood fromclosing until a new bag is installed.

Note: DO NOT bend or crease the middle ofthe cardboard when installing the bag into thebag mount slots.

8. Rotate red bagmount down and

install bag into slotsas shown, pushingdown until thecardboard tab locks

into position and theholes align. Tuck _the bag securely _into the bag cavityso that none of it will be pinched by thehood.

9. Close and latch canister hood.

10. Reinstall hose.

11. Plug cord into wall outlet.

CAUTION

NEVER REUSEA DUST BAG. Very finematerials, such as carpet freshener, facepowder, fine dust, plaster, soot, new car-pet llnt, etc. can clog the bag and cause itto burst before it is full and may causedamage to vacuum cleaner motor.Change bag more often when vacuumingthese materials.

CLEANING EXTERIOR AND ATTACHMENTS !J

1. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner. DONOT drip water on vacuum cleaner.

2. To clean exterior, or to reduce static elec-tricity and dust build-up, wipe outer surfaceof vacuum cleaner and attachments. Use aclean, soft cloth that has been dipped inasolution of mild liquid detergent and water,then wrung dry. Wipe dry after cleaning.

CAUTION

Do not use attachments if they are wet.Attachments used in dirty areas, such asunder a refrigerator, should not be usedon other surfaces until they are washed.They could leave marks.

MOTOR SAFETY FILTER CLEANING

WARNING

Electrical Shack Hazard

Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner fromelectrical outlet. Do not operate thevacuum cleaner without the motor safetyfilter. Be sure the filter is dry and properlyinstalled to prevent motor failure and/orelectrical shock.

2. Lift the rubber re-

tainer and pullout motor safety filteras shown.

3. Wash filter inwarm soapy water, rinse,then dry. Do not clean in dishwasher or in-stall while damp.

4. Replace the filter bysliding it back intoplace under the ribs inthe bag cavity. Tuckfilter in so that it fits

completely under therubber retainer.

5. Replace the bag as outlined in the BAGCHANGING section.

EXHAUST FILTER CHANGING

_WARNINGFire and/or Electrical Shock Hazard

Do not operate with a clogged exhaustfilter or without the exhaust filter orexhaust filter cover installed.

HEPA EXHAUST FILTER

The exhaust filter cartridge must bereplaced when dirty. Replace the filterwhen the entire surface area iscoveredevenly. The filter CANNOT be washed as itwill Joseitsdust trapping ability.

NOTE: See PARTS AND FEATURES forExhaust Filter number.

1. Pull out andup on theexhaust filtercover tofrom thecanister and layaside.

3. Replace exhaustfilter cartridge.Place the new filtercartridge into thecanister with thefoam seal facingdown towards thecanister.

BELT CHANGING AND AGITATOR CLEANING

2. Unscrew two (2)PowerMate coverscrews.

1. Install newbelt overmotor drive,then overbelt path.

Make sure there is no gap between thecover and base.

5. Turn PowerMate upside down and re-place two (2) cover screws.
