Artificial Turf
Maintenance
Artificial turf should be washed down with a garden hose (do not use a high pressure washer) every
spring, and more often if required.
Weeds may manage to grow along the edges or joints. These should be pulled from the roots or can be
treated with a non–selective herbicide.
Every other year, we recommend sweeping in additional sand to fill gaps between the blades of grass, this
keeps the turf standing upright.
It is important to remove fruits and vegetables (apples, berries, etc) from the turf as they contain acids
that may stain the turf.
Specification
FAQ Q: My artificial turf is leaning to one side what can I do?
o A: This can be corrected by sweeping it in the opposite direction.
Q: Can pets go to the washroom on artificial turf?
o A: Yes, however we recommend training your pets to go to the washroom in a certain location.
When a pet does their business on artificial turf, the feces should be disposed of then the area
should be rinsed off with a garden hose, the area(s) where your pet urinates should be rinsed off
with a garden hose as well.
Q: Are seams in artificial turf noticeable?
o A: Yes, due to the manufacturing process of the artificial turf it is impossible to hide the seams
from all angles.
Warranty
Greentree offers a 1 year workmanship warranty on artificial turf.
All artificial turf Greentree installs comes with a manufacturer’s warranty.

Sod
New Maintenance
Your new sod has just been laid and fertilized. However, it is in desperate need of water. For the next
three days, water your lawn twice per day. Once early in the morning, and then once in the evening. This
helps prevent it from evaporating in the hot afternoon sun. It is important to completely soak the lawn to
the point that it would become mushy to walk on. As the new soil under the sod is dry, it is important
hydrate the soil. As the lawn is now soaked to the point where walking on it will leave indentations, avoid
walking on the lawn for 3 weeks. Any indentations will not be covered by warranty. Check to ensure the
soil has stabilized prior to walking on, or mowing the lawn.
One trick to water the lawn without walking on the lawn is to place the sprinkler at one edge and the hose
at the other edge of lawn then pull the hose until the sprinkler is in the middle of the lawn.
It is not possible to overwater the lawn within the first three days.
For the next three weeks, slow the watering down to once per day. Be sure to water just long enough for
the moisture to soak into the soil below the sod. An easy way to check is to lift a piece of sod that has just
been watered, to see if the soil beneath it has been watered.
Remember the sod roots are still very shallow so frequent watering is important during these first weeks.
Ongoing Maintenance A new lawn should not be aerated for two years after this time it is recommended to aerate the lawn in
the spring and fall, each year.
A new lawn should also not be power raked in the first two years. During the first two years it should be
hand raked to dethatch. This should be done each spring.
We recommend watering the lawn once every two days; remember less frequent deep watering is
preferred to more frequent shallow watering. The roots only grow as deep as the available water supply.
Deep rooted grass survives drought and hot weather more easily.
We recommend that when you have your lawn aerated; you seed immediately thereafter, using a coated
seed.
We recommend you re-seed every spring and fall.
We recommend fertilizing your lawn twice per year with a corn-gluten based organic fertilizer. It should be
applied in the spring ten days after reseeding and again in August. This product has seed inhibiting
properties that can organically control weeds. It will not be as effective as a chemical weed inhibitor,
however the best way to control weeds naturally is to have a healthy lawn. This fertilizer can be
augmented as needed with a fish based liquid fertilizer.
It is not advisable for pets to do their business on the lawn as this can cause damage to the lawn.

[- 6 -]
FAQ Q: My new lawn has mushrooms growing in it, what can I do?
o A: Since new lawns receive so much moisture, it is normal to see mushrooms growing in the
lawn. These are not harmful and will go away once the lawn goes back to normal watering.
Q: Why does the sod dry out so fast along concrete?
o A: The edges of sod that touch concrete (house, driveway, sidewalk, etc.) may need more
frequent watering than other areas of the lawn. As the concrete gets hot, the evaporation rate
increases, and it tends to suck up a lot of moisture.
Q: Some of my sod has turned yellow, what can I do?
o A: It is also normal to have pieces of sod, sometimes even half a piece and other times, whole
sections; that turn yellow in about a week. This can happen for two reasons: if it’s a section it
has probably been allowed to dry out once, and therefore will require more frequent watering. If
the sod has turned yellow in individual pieces, this is likely due to the sod being cut slightly
thinner than normal. In either instance, be sure to continue frequent watering and after three to
four weeks, the lawn will turn back to green, just as though nothing had ever happened. Should
you have any problems with the lawn, remember it is covered under Greentree’s Warranty.
However because of this common scenario it is advisable to wait 30 days to determine if the lawn
has taken or not.
Q: When can I mow the new grass?
o A: The first mowing should take place after you can walk on it without leaving indentations;
usually after the 3 week mark. When you mow your grass for the first time the grass should be
very long, usually around 5” tall, therefore it is recommended that your lawn mower is at the
highest possible setting. Three days after the first mow, mow again at the height you plan on
normally mowing.
Q: Can I use lawn care products right away?
o A: As the sod was fertilized just before installation and is now establishing itself, do not put any
weed control products on the lawn for 90 days. However, after 30 days, it is recommended to
fertilize the lawn using an organic fertilizer.
Q: Why does my grass look different?
o A: Depending on the year grass will seed between May and July, this is a normal part of grasses
growing cycle and will return to normal once the seed process is completed.
Warranty
Greentree provides a one-time one-year warranty for sod growth until July 1st of the following year after
installation.
Warranty is void if the sod is not properly watered; if there are signs of physical damage, or pet stains.
Sod that butts up directly against trees, houses, or buildings is not subject to warranty.
Levelness nor depressions of the lawn are not subject to warranty.
It is up to the client to manage a watering schedule for sod. This includes managing an irrigation system,
if applicable.

Edging
All Edging Maintenance
Ensure the grass is routinely cut back to prevent it from growing over top of the edging.
Poly/Aluminum Edging Maintenance
Make sure the edging is not pulled up, above the ground, to the point where the lawn mower would hit it.
If it is raised, push it back down and insert a spike to prevent it from lifting. Edging height should be
checked every spring, and repaired as necessary.
Granite Edging Maintenance Ensure all stones are in place, however they do not need to be stuck in the ground.
The joints can be filled with polymeric sand if desired.
Granite edging can be sealed if desired.
Concrete Edging Maintenance
We recommend resealing the concrete every three years.
Specification
[- 8 -]
FAQ Q: Which edging has the longest lifespan?
o A: Granite edging has the longest lifespan. The weakest part of granite edging, and the only part
that ages, is the subsurface concrete. Since it is below surface you will not see it fade, like you
would a sidewalk, and although it will crack with time, it will remain a strong base for the granite!
Q: Are there gaps between each granite stone?
o A: Yes, the granite comes in pre-cut squares and rectangles so whenever they are used to make
a curving line gaps will be noticeable. Even with rectilinear edging deign there will be small gaps
as the stones won’t fit perfectly together. Not to worry though, there is still concrete below to
stop the grass roots!
Q: Why are some of the stones not stuck to the concrete?
o A: The concrete is meant to stabilize the stones to prevent sinking. While many of the stones will
stick initially, they will not be permanently adhered. If desired it is acceptable to glue the stones
to the concrete, we suggest using Bulldog brand PL Premium.
Q: Does “Quickcurb” crack?
o A: Since “Quickcurb” is concrete it will crack through the freeze – thaw cycle, just like a concrete
sidewalk it is inevitable however the severity is related to the amount of water in the soil below.
Q: What happens if I hit “Quickcurb” with my lawn mower?
o A: “Quickcurb” is stamped and sealed concrete, therefore you do run the risk of wearing away
the sealant or even chipping away the concrete if your mower makes contact with it. To be safe,
always mow 6” away from the edging then use a lawn trimmer to get nice and close to the
edging.
Q: Do I have to re-seal “Quckcurb”?
o A: +Sealant does deteriorate over time unfortunately. How quickly it will need to be resealed
depends on the amount of traffic, or wear and tear, and the amount of sunlight it receives. You
should reseal it the summer after it is installed then every 2-3 years following!
Q: Why doesn’t polyethylene (plastic) edging stay in the ground?
o A: Polyethylene edging has no strong way of being secure in the ground. Therefore, just like
rocks rise in fields, polyethylene edging will rise in lawns!
Q: Does aluminum edging stay in the ground?
o A: Since aluminum is much more rigid and tear resistant than plastic it can be anchored in the
ground very well, and has a slimmer profile, it will stay in the ground better than polyethylene
edging!
Q: Will I be able to mow along aluminum edging?
o A: Yes, as you will see in our construction specifications, aluminum edging is to be installed below
mower deck heights. Although it doesn’t create a noticeable path to follow like granite edging,
you will be able to mow right over top of it!
Warranty A one-year workmanship warranty exists on edging construction performed by Greentree.
Greentree is not liable for any lifting, chipping, discolouration, and/or disfiguration of material that may
occur after installation. This includes damage from de-icing salts or other products administered.
[- 9 -]
Plant Material
New Material
New shrubs, perennials and trees will take 3 weeks to establish roots and a healthy growing pattern. It is
recommended to water the shrubs and perennials once per day for the first 3 days. Then every other day
for the next three weeks.
Trees that were in pots should be treated like a shrub. However, large trees will need more water. We
recommend the large trees are watered every day for two weeks, every other day thereafter for the next
week.
It is important to water plants without over watering. Different plants and the same plants in different
areas of your yard (considering sun, slope, shade, etc.) will need different amounts of water. To check
this, remove a small amount of soil from the surface and ensure that the soil is drying (but not dried out)
in-between watering.
The new plants have just been fertilized; so it is recommended to wait 90 days before applying additional
fertilizer. We recommend using an organic liquid fertilizer.
It is important to protect new plants from insects or animals.
Ongoing Maintenance
These are some general points that apply to many plants; however each plant is different, each plant and its
problem can be unique. If you are not familiar with the proper maintenance of the individual plants; we would
recommend scheduling a garden consultation each spring with one of Greentree's Master Gardeners. This will
ensure you get the best advice and help spot issues before they become problems.
Most shrubs and plants should be pruned when dormant which is in the spring or fall. Most plants should
be watered twice per week. In the fall it is particularly important to water plants in before the ground
freezes. We recommend using a deep root waterer. Most plants should be fertilized 3-4 times a year. For
more information refer to greentreelandscaping.ca

FAQ Q: Where do the plants come from?
o A: Greentree will locate the nearest reputable nursey to your project! Common nurseries
Greentree uses in the Edmonton area are Kiwi Nursery, Millcreek Nursery, and Sunstar Nursery.
Do I have to water the plants before the project is finished?
o Greentree will water the plants until planted. Once planted it is your responsibility to maintain a
watering schedule and manage an irrigation system when applicable.
Can I pick out the plants at the nursery?
o Yes, if you would like to pick out the plants for your project just let your designer or project
manager know and they will arrange a time with you to visit the nursery!
Does my plant have a disease?
o A: The quickest way to determine this is to take a picture or some leaf samples to your local
nursery to obtain plant specific information.
Warranty
Greentree provides a one-time one-year warranty for plant growth until July 1st of the following year after
installation.
The warranty does not cover cedars, upright junipers, certain ornamental varieties, and plants that have
not been properly watered, or have been physically damaged.
Warranty is void if the plant is not properly watered; if there are signs of physical damage, or pet stains.
Trees will be replaced with new trees that are the same size as the ones originally planted to a maximum
of five centimeters potted, as available; should the same type/size of trees be unavailable for this
procedure, Greentree will replace the previously planted trees with ones of a similar variety.
Shrubs will be replaced with number-two-size containers, as available; these may be replaced with an
alike selection depending on availability.
Perennials will be replaced with a 6” containers, as available; these may be replaced with an alike
selection depending on availability.
Extended warranty is available at an additional cost.
It is up to the client to manage a watering schedule for plants. This includes managing an irrigation
system, if applicable.

Groundcover
Wood Mulch Areas Maintenance
Remove excess leaves using a rake or leaf blower. It is not necessary to ensure all leaves have been
removed.
Weeding the area regularly before the plants are able to mature will prevent root systems from
developing.
Each spring, mulch should be added to maintain a depth of 2 to 4 inches. This will keep the bed looking
nice and help prevent weed growth.
Rock Mulch Areas Maintenance
Keep free of leaves by either picking out by hand or using a leaf blower. When using a leaf blower, be
cautious not to blow leaves further into rock mulch.
When pulling weeds out of rock beds, make sure the root is removed to ensure the weed does not grow
back.
Pay close attention to the edges and borders of the rock bed as the fabric may have slight gaps where it
will become easier for weeds to grow.
Each spring, the rocks should be washed out with a high pressure washer to remove dust and debris from
accumulating on the fabric. Failure to do so will allow debris to accumulate over a number of years to the
point where the fabric will be rendered useless.
Specification
[- 12 -]
FAQ Q: Will all my mulch be the same colour, size, and texture?
o A: Since the mulches are natural materials, they will vary in colour, size, and texture. We
recommend viewing a large quantity of the selected ground cover to accurately assess the normal variance.
Q: Will I still get weeds in wood mulch? o A: If the wood mulch is maintained at a minimum depth of 3” it will be highly effective at
preventing new weed growth. We consider wood mulch to be 80% effective. It’s important to note that wood mulch does not inhibit the proliferation of weed growth through its roots, therefore, if weeds are left unattended the mulch will be substantially less effective.
Q: Does wood mulch stay the same colour? o A: All mulch fades over time, and the more sun it gets the faster it will fade. The best type of
mulch for fade resistance is bark chip, the worst is cedar mulch. Q: Is it true that I need to “top up” the mulch?
o A: Since wood mulch is biodegradable it does just that, therefore you will have to top up the mulch. Keep in mind, the perfect time to try a new colour of mulch is when it is being topped up, it’s like repainting the walls in a room!
Q: How often should I top up my wood mulch? o A: Your mulch should be topped up by 1”-2” the year after we install it, then every other year
afterwards. This will help to minimize the amount of weeds you get, and it will keep the colour looking sharp!
Q: Will I get weeds in rock or rubber mulch? o A: Although neither of these options will support growth in themselves, the required fabric
underlay does create a sort of catch for dirt and dust and that is what will allow weeds to grow. Consider it 90% effective.
Q: How often should I weed my mulch? o A: We recommend weeding all of your beds the same day that you mow your lawn!
Q: Why have I seen people washing off their rock mulch? o A: To reduce the amount of weeds you get in rock and rubber mulch, we recommend you wash
out all the dirt, dust, and seeds that have been caught between the rocks every year. Q: Some yards I’ve seen have fabric showing, is that normal?
o A: If the weeds haven’t been taken care of soon enough allowing their roots to weave into the fabric so when the weed gets pulled up, so does the fabric. If you make sure to weed your beds each time you mow your lawn this shouldn’t be a problem!
o A: This can also happen when the mulch is installed on a slope, gravity, precipitation, and traffic can all cause mulch to shift downhill.
Q: Does rubber mulch fade? o A: Rubber mulch can take up to 10 years to start noticing any fading!
Q: Do I have to top up rubber mulch? o A: Eventually, you will want to top up your rubber mulch. Ideally, it will just fade to a point you
want more vivid colour again, however it is very lightweight so it can end up being blown away over time!
Q: How should I get the leaves out of the mulch? o A: A leaf blower is a Landscape Maintenance crew’s best friend. For rubber or wood mulch, aim
the blower high, start far away then slowly walk closer. Eventually, you will learn the distance you need to blow the leaves off without blowing the mulch. This works best when the leaves are dry! The same goes for rock mulch, however, blowing the rocks away isn’t a concern but blowing the leaves underneath the rocks is!
o A: Since wood mulch is biodegradable, you can use your blowers to blow the leaves into the mulch so that they biodegrade together! This will save you on bagging all those leaves but you may want to overturn your mulch once all the leaves are in it.
Warranty Greentree does not provide a warranty for groundcovers.

Paving Stone
Maintenance
Add polymeric sand to any joints as necessary. Simply take a cup of polymeric sand and pour some over
the required joints, then sweep off any excess. Ensure that the surface is clean then mist with water. And
leave to set for 24 hours. It is important to ensure that it does not rain during this 24 hour period. To
ensure you have the proper polymeric sand, it can be purchased at Greentree Outdoor Living.
Cleaning can be done with a pressure washer and if needed; soap or any other concrete cleaner can be
used.
Sealing is not required; however a sealer can be applied to bring out a deeper richer color in the stone.
Once sealed; we recommend resealing every 3 years.
If you feel the stone is too slippery; sand can be spread on the stone prior to the sealer being applied.
Thus creating a grit texture.
If a stone has sunken in, remove the effected stone. Then put polymeric sand beneath the stone. Reinsert
the stone and add polymeric sand to the joints, using the same method as stated above. The same can be
done to replace a cracked stone.
The polymeric sand will control weeds growing between the stones. If you find weeds are growing in an
area; remove the weeds then fill the joint with polymeric sand using the method stated above.
Specification
FAQ Q: Are all of the paving stones the same colour?
o A: Each paving stone material comes from the same quarry so they are all the same type of
stone, however, because they are natural stones there are slight differences in the shape, colour,
and texture. Concrete paving stones however are quite precise in their shape and texture but can
change slightly in colour depending on the batch and age.
Q: Because they are natural stone do I have to seal my paving stones?
o A: Our paving stones are non-porous, this means that they do not have to be sealed as there is
no concern for frost damage, as well, they are much more resistant to staining!
Q: I like the colour of my paving stones when they’re wet, is there a way to make them always look that
colour?
o A: This is one of the main reasons we seal paving stones! Sealing will make the stones appear
darker, more colourful, and slightly shiny, just like they are wet! Keep in mind sun exposure as
well as some de-icing agents cause the sealant to deteriorate.
Q: Will the paving stone colour fade with time?
o A: Greentree’s natural paving stones have been that colour for millions of years and we are
confident they will remain the same colour for at least another million! Unfortunately, concrete
paving stones are susceptible to fading.
Q: Why does it look like some of my paving stones have broken corners?
o A: Since the paving stones are natural, we chose to offer them with a more natural, tumbled,
appearance. This effect is usually most noticeable on the corners!
Q: Will there be gaps between my paving stones?
o A: Yes, each paving stone size has an allowable margin of acceptance to create a balance
between accuracy and waste reduction! Don’t worry though, this gap gets filled with polymeric
sand to decrease maintenance required and the visibility of the gap!
Q: Why are there large gaps between the stones in curved areas?
o A: Industry standard for gaps between square or rectangle paving stones in curved areas is ¾”.
This means that the stone should be touching on one side, and on the opposite the gap should be
[- 14 -]
equal to or less than ¾” the gap should then be filled with a polymeric sand to reduce visibility
and maintenance!
Q: I noticed weeds growing out of my patio what can I do to keep them out?
o A: We install polymeric sand between paving stones to minimize weeds growing between stones,
however, while polymeric sand does have some flexibility to it, it is not perfect and sometimes
crack over the colder months due to frost heave. This can be fixed by buying a bag of polymeric
sand then carefully filling the crack with it and using a mist bottle to lightly wet the sand. Be
careful not to put too much poly-sand on as it can stick to stones paving stones once it gets wet!
Q: Will the paving stones be above the grass?
o A: No, to make yard maintenance easier, and reduce the potential for tripping, we make sure to
build the base low enough that the top of the paving stone is just slightly above the base of the
adjacent material!
Q: Will it be difficult to shovel off my paving stones?
o A: This varies greatly depending on the pattern of the stone, and the direction it is installed
compared to the direction you are shoveling. Everyone knows the feeling of running square into a
crack, if you go at an angle to that crack it can be almost unnoticeable, the same goes for paving
stones!
Q: Will my paving stones all be at the same height?
o A: As there are so many pieces to the puzzle with paving stones it is very difficult to ensure that
all of the paving stones are at the exact same height, yet it is important to have a flat paving
stone surface. Our standard is to have each paving stone less than 1/8” higher or lower than the
adjacent paving stones!
Warranty
A five-year workmanship warranty exists on hardscaping construction performed by Greentree.
Paving stones that have sunk due to compaction or movement and are visible and/or is causing
drainage issues - will be covered for repair a maximum of two times during the five-year period.
Settling that occurs below one foot of subgrade will not be covered by warranty.
Greentree is not liable for any cracking, chipping, discolouration, and/or disfiguration of material that
may occur after installation. This includes damage from de-icing salts or other products administered
to natural stone or concrete.
[- 15 -]
Concrete
Maintenance Regular broom finish concrete does not need to be sealed. However all other kinds of concrete (stamped,
exposed, etc.) need to be sealed before the first winter, then again the next year. And every three years
thereafter. If you feel the concrete is too slippery; then sand can be spread on the concrete prior to the
sealer being applied. Thus creating a grit texture.
On concrete products it is normal to see a white powdery substance on the surface. This is called
efflorescence and is salt leeching through the concrete. This will in no way effect the integrity of the
concrete and can normally be washed off, however if there is any difficulty there is efflorescence cleaner
available.
Cracking in the concrete is normal, and should be expected. However the crack should not separate to
form gaps. Should you have a gap formed, it is recommended that you clean the crack then fill it with
concrete crack filler. Prior to the next winter.
Cleaning can be done with a pressure washer and if needed; soap or any other concrete cleaner can be
used.
If the concrete sinks we recommend having it mud jacked. This is a process by which concrete is pumped
underneath the slab which can then raise the slab back into position, without damage.
Specification
FAQ Q: How come I always see cracked concrete?
o A: Concrete is very hard, but not very flexible. Therefore, when the ground freezes and thaws it
can move the concrete forcing it to crack as it cannot flex. Greentree minimalizes the size and
visibility of cracks by installing rebar every 18” in both directions. While properly installed
concrete will still crack, the rebar will prevent the crack from expanding or shifting.
Q: Is it possible to install concrete that does not crack?
o A: Greentree does offer a crack free concrete through the use of piles and void form. This has
significant extra cost and is generally not considered cost effective in most applications.
Q: Is stamped concrete painted?
o A: Stamped concrete is coloured with a 2 part chemical process! The first colour is added to the
concrete mixture prior to being poured and creates a base colour that permeates throughout the
concrete. The second colour is then applied prior to stamping, this gives a variated colour and is
what makes the stamp look realistic!
Q: What is “brushed concrete”?
o A: Brushed concrete is just like a city sidewalk! It gets its name from quite literally being brushed
with a broom. The bristles of the broom create grooves which is done to increase traction! This
type of concrete does not require sealant.
Q: What is “stamped concrete”?
o A: Stamped concrete is concrete that has colour additives, and receives a stamping process with
a pattern to replicate stone, tile, or even wood, before the concrete hardens. It is finished with a
sealant to increase the beauty and lifespan!
Q: What is “exposed aggregate concrete”?
o A: Exposed aggregate concrete is a special blend of concrete that uses smaller aggregate
(pebbles). It is poured just like regular concrete but it receives a retarding agent that slows the
curing along the surface. Once the pour is mostly dry, the top of the concrete gets washed off
[- 16 -]
leaving the nice pebble look, it then receives a sealant to secure the pebbles and increase the
colour!
Q: Do I need to seal my concrete?
o A: Other than brushed concrete, all concrete surfaces require sealant, however the first sealing is
included as part of the installation process.
Q: Do I need to reseal my concrete?
o A: Sunlight, as well as traffic, will wear down the sealant. The sealant protects the finish of the
concrete, if not sealed, exposed aggregate concrete will lose the aggregate, and stamped
concrete will flake/chip off. Depending on the site conditions you will need to reseal your concrete
every 1-3 years.
Q: Is it true that I’m not supposed to use salt on sealed surfaces?
o A: Yes, unfortunately, salt eats away at sealant making a “patchy” look. If you put salt on your
sealant it will be difficult to get rid of the “patchy” look. We recommend using sand for traction,
and deicer can be used to melt ice however it is important to use environmentally safe deicers
that won't damage sealant.
Q: Are exposed aggregate and stamped concrete slippery?
o A: No, stamped nor exposed aggregate concrete are not slippery themselves. However, the
sealant on the concrete can be! There are different kinds of sealers that can be applied, including
sealers with a granular additive that will greatly increase traction. These may be an additional
cost.
Q: Can a retaining wall be made with stamped concrete?
o A: Unfortunately, the only portion of the concrete that can be stamped is that which does not
have a form on it. This means only the top of concrete can receive a stamp, the sides of stamped
concrete are smooth and single coloured. This is the same for steps.
Warranty A one-year warranty exists on poured concrete for any cracking that occurs outside of the expansion
joints; cracks will be filled and sealed.
Greentree is not liable for any chipping, discolouration, and/or disfiguration of material that may occur
after installation. This includes damage from de-icing salts or other products administered.

Crushed Pathways
Maintenance
Clean off any debris from pathway using a leaf blower as necessary. Be cautious not to blow directly at the
pathway, blowing away the pathway material!
Specification
FAQ
Q: Will the rocks move around when I walk on them?
o When the pathway is installed the rocks can be fairly soft. We hose the surface off after
installation, this helps to harden the path, additional water can be added to increase hardness to
your liking. Because the rocks are crushed, they have a lot of edges, this allows them to lock
together and compact preventing them from moving around too much under your feet!
Q: Can I push my mower along the pathway easily?
o A: Yes! Because the path is compacted, the rocks will lock together allowing you to easily push
your mower or wheelbarrow along it!
Q: Will the pathway collect water?
o Yes, the pathway will collect water but it will remain solid and comfortable to walk along. It will
drain with excessive amounts of water preventing pooling.
Warranty
Greentree does not provide a warranty for crushed pathways.

Retaining Walls and Steps
Maintenance
The coping on the wall has been attached using an adhesive; it is possible that adhesive did not stick
correctly and the stone coping can become loose. Should this happen; simply lift the coping unit, ensure
the surface is clean, then apply an adhesive (we recommend Bulldog PL Premium).
Cleaning can be done with a pressure washer and if needed; soap or any other concrete cleaner can be
used. If efflorescence appears, and is not easily washed off, there are efflorescence specific cleaners
available.

FAQ Q: Does my retaining wall require a permit?
o A: We recommend checking with your local building authority to see if you require a permit for
your retaining wall. If requested, Greentree can assist you in obtaining any necessary permits.
Q: What is the white residue on my retaining wall?
o A: This is known as Efflorescence, it is the process of dissolving an internally held salt in water.
The water, with the salt now dissolved in it, migrates to the surface where the water evaporates
leaving only the salt.
Q: Why do I see the tops of retaining wall blocks on my wall?
o A: As the square block goes around a curve, some overlap is required.
Q: Are retaining walls built straight up and down?
o A: No, to increase the strength walls are typically leaning slightly back into the soil they are
retaining. This is particularly noticeable when a wall meets a straight vertical surface, like the
corner of a house.
Q: What will be the height of each stair rise in my retaining wall?
o A: This depends on the size of retaining wall block chosen to build the wall.
Q: Will my retaining wall be engineered?
o A: Most retaining walls do not require an engineer to stamp the plan prior to construction. There
are three main reasons an Engineers stamp may be recommended. Firstly, if the wall is going to
have a large load (like a car) within 5’ of the edge of the wall. Secondly, if the retaining wall
height is above 6’ tall from the final grade elevation, to the bottom of the coping. Lastly, local
building code may require an Engineers stamp.
Warranty A five-year workmanship warranty exists on hardscaping construction performed by Greentree. This
excludes poured concrete walls.
Retaining walls that have sunk due to compaction or movement will be covered for repair a maximum of
two times during the five-year period.
Settling that occurs below one foot of subgrade will not be covered by warranty.
A one-year warranty exists on poured concrete walls for any cracking that occurs outside of the expansion
joints; cracks will be filled and sealed.
Greentree is not liable for any chipping, discolouration, and/or disfiguration of material that may occur
after installation. This includes damage from de-icing salts or other products administered.

Drainage/Grading
Maintenance
Downspouts are connected, in good shape, and discharge to the ground surface past the excavation zone
and within the property.
Positive slope exists away from foundation walls
Drainage swales convey surface drainage off the lot without impacting adjacent properties.
Settlement under steps or decks are properly backfilled.
Window wells are debris free to ensure effective drainage.
Ensure that your sump pump discharge, and downspouts direct water away from the house.
Keep material from building up in swales creating dams.

FAQ
Q: What is rough grade?
o A: On a new home, the rough grade is a soil elevation achieved by the homebuilder to return the
clay to a level compliant with the developments grading plan, installed correct downspouts, eaves
troughs, and window wells, as well as many other things!
o On an existing home, the rough grade is removing the existing materials to approximately 4”
below the final grade elevation.
Q: What is final grade?
o A: On a new home, final grade is increasing the elevation of your property, through the addition
of soil, to comply with the developments drainage plan. This typically means adding 4”-6” of soil
to the rough grade! Most building authorities require an inspection and approval of final grade
elevations.
o A: On an existing home, final grade is the addition of 4”-6” of soil while ensuring the elevation
along the property line is returned to its pre-existing elevation, and that positive drainage is
maintained throughout the property.
Q: How do I get final grade approval on a new home?
o A: Greentree will have an engineer survey the site, and provide a final grade certificate to the
local building authority for approval. Some municipalities may charge an inspection fee that is not
covered by Greentree.
Q: How long does it take to receive final grade approval?
o A: There can be quite a variance in the timeline, less than a month would considered quick and
rarely would it take more than 3 months from when we arrive on your site! Unfortunately, it is
[- 22 -]
mostly a matter of waiting for approval once we leave so there will be little activity on your
property.
Q: What is expected from me while we wait for final grade approval?
o A: The grading has a tolerance of 4 cm. Therefore, we request that no major activities occur
within your yard that may change the grading elevations (fence, deck, shed, or other
construction). Do not drive, or tow, anything across the soil as it will leave ruts. As well, Fresh
topsoil proficiently grows weeds, we ask that you remove any weeds larger than 3 cm.
Q: What happens if my final grade approval fails?
o A: It is not uncommon for the approval to fail the first time. Greentree will correct deficiencies
related to our workmanship and re-apply as soon as possible at no extra charge! However, some
deficiencies may not be related to our workmanship and would form an extra charge or may be
covered by your builder (ie. Eavestroughs, shed and window wells). Most municipalities will notify
us by email but some may leave a report at the home, if this is the case for you, please send us a
copy!
Q: Does my infill home need final grade?
o A: Infill homes require a very specific final grade as, unlike new developments, none of the water
that lands on your property can run along the property line on its way out! Also, there is typically
no grading plan to follow. This can make the grade more challenging to approve. In some cases a
retaining wall or large swale may be required to be built to obtain approval and this may not be
known until receiving the inspection report from the building authority. These cost are not
included in the final grade cost.
Warranty Greentree provides a five-year workmanship warranty on grading provided there are no contributing
issues.
Settling that occurs below one foot of subgrade will not be covered by warranty.
Flooding that occurs in window wells is not warranted as this is a weeping tile issue.
Greentree is not liable for flooding that occurs through window wells or foundations.
Most house insurance companies are also not liable for flooding that occurs through window wells or
foundations (additional flood insurance may be available, talk to your insurance agent for more
information).
Please follow the maintenance procedures listed above as well as listed at www.edmonton.ca/lotgrading.

Stepping stones
Maintenance
If you find your stepping stones shifting unsafely after 1 year, you should be able to stop any large
shifting by rotate the stepping stone back and forth while applying pressure.
Specification
FAQ
Q: How are the stepping stones spaced?
o A: At a normal walking pace.
Q: The side of my house is steep, will the stepping stones slide down the slope?
o A: When Greentree installs stepping stones in sloped areas, we create a base that will partially
level the ground directly below the stepping stones. For example, your side yard may be at a 10
degree slope while your stepping stones are only at a 5 degree slope.
Warranty Greentree provides a one-year workmanship warranty on stepping stones.

Boulders
Maintenance
Wash off boulders every year or as needed.
Specification
FAQ
Q: Can I select the boulder(s) for my project?
o A: Yes, if you would like to select the boulder(s) for your project just let your designer or project
manager know and they will arrange a time with you to view options!
Q: Will my boulder fall over?
o A: Greentree will not install a boulder that will fall over via natural causes. However, although not
very easy, boulders can be pushed over. Greentree cannot be held responsible for this.
Q: Is there anything that can be done if my boulder won’t stand on its own the way I want it to?
o A: If there is a specific way that you want your boulder to stand, that it won’t on its own,
Greentree can install a concrete foundation below ground for your boulder to sit in. This is an
additional cost.
Warranty Greentree does not provide a warranty for boulders.
Dry Creeks
Maintenance
Keep free of leaves by either picking out by hand or using a leaf blower. When using a leaf blower, be
cautious not to blow leaves further into rock mulch.
When pulling weeds out of dry creeks, make sure the root is removed to ensure the weed does not grow
back.
Each spring, the rocks should be washed out with a pressure washer to remove dust and debris from
accumulating on the fabric. Failure to do so will allow debris to accumulate over a number of years to the
point where the fabric will be rendered useless.
Specification
FAQ
Q: Will water run down my dry creek?
o A: Dry creeks are not intended to have water run in them, they are not installed with waterproof
membrane, therefore water will only run down them during a heavy rainfall.
Q: What is the point in a dry creek?
o A: Dry creeks are the perfect way to add a more natural appearance to your landscaping without
having the maintenance required for a water feature! They can be combined with a swale to allow
rainwater runoff, which is not absorbed into the soil, to run through them.
Warranty Greentree does not provide a warranty for dry creeks.
[- 25 -]
Water features
Maintenance These are some general points that apply to some water features; however each feature is unique.
Basics:
o Water features do not need to be drained for the winter.
o When the temperature drops below 0 degrees, remove the pump and autofill then store in a dry
place.
o In the spring, drain the water, rinse everything off, drain rinse water.
o Install the pump and autofill.
o Fill the water feature and leave the autofill off for the first day to ensure there are no leaks.
o Check for leaks then turn on autofill if there are no leaks.
o Make sure you have algae control rocks (available for purchase in store).
Specification
[- 26 -]
FAQ Q: Why do I see a lot of water features with green water?
o A: The “green” water is algae growth in the water. It can be minimized by simply having water
circulating throughout the feature with a pump, even if the pump doesn’t necessarily move the
water to a certain spot ie. A waterfall. Algae control rocks are an excellent way to minimize algae
and are organic therefore they are safe for fish and pants.
Q: Can I put fish in my water feature?
o A: You can put fish in your water feature however keep in mind that it needs to be a minimum 4’
deep and have aeration throughout the winter. Also, it can be difficult to keep fish from being
caught by birds, cats, foxes, mink, etc.
Q: Can I put plants in my water feature?
o A: Yes, if you would like plants in your water feature let us know as some plants require shallow
depth to grow around the edge requiring us to build a “shelf” around the pond.
Warranty Greentree provides a one-year workmanship warranty on water features.
A manufacturer’s warranty may exist for pumps and other components.

Lighting
Maintenance
Ensure the photocell has direct view of the outdoors
Set timer on the transformer to an appropriate time for you
Check each bulb regularly, replace any that maybe burnt out
Halogen bulbs or LED bulbs can be used.
o Halogen bulbs use more energy, but create heat, which will melt the snow around them, ideal for
winter.
o LED bulbs are more energy efficient than Halogen bulbs, also have various colors – from cool blue
to warm yellow. Make sure you get the color you want. Thus making them ideal for summer.
If there are a number of lights not working first replace the bulbs in the non working lights, then check the
circuit breaker on the transformer. Afterwards follow the wire from the transformer to the first light to
check for damage.
Specification
FAQ
Q: Are the lights hardwired into my house?
o No, we prefer to use a transformer that plugs into an exterior outlet. This keeps us from having
to drill holes into your house!
Q: Do I have to turn the lights on and off?
o A: The transformer for your lights has a built in photocell that will turn the lights on and off for
you! You just set how long you want the lights to stay on for and it will take care of the rest!
Q: Can the lights be hooked up to a switch?
o If you have an outlet that is connected to a switch, your lights can be set to be controlled with
that switch.
Warranty
Greentree provides a one-year workmanship warranty on lighting.
Greentree does not provide a warranty on lightbulbs.
A manufacturer warranty may be included on lighting transformers and other components.

Irrigation
Maintenance
The irrigation system must be blown out before the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius. We
recommend scheduling an ongoing irrigation maintenance program with Greentree Outdoor Living to
ensure the irrigation is working properly
The main water supply to the irrigation must be turned off for winter
The system must be started in the spring, all spray heads and drip lines must be checked for alignment
and proper operation. This will also ensure there are no leaks.
Specification
FAQ Q: Is there a lot of maintenance with an irrigation system?
o A: No! Although Greentree recommends hiring an irrigation maintenance company to blow out
your lines in the fall, do spring start-ups and check the operation of all the emitters, it is
something a homeowner can do fairly easily with the right equipment.
Q: Is irrigation worth the money?
o A: In Alberta, irrigation is well worth the money. The difference in plant, and sod, growth and
density is very noticeable in our climate. The higher the cost of your plant material the more
valuable an irrigation system is.
Q: Why do I not see many irrigation systems in homes?
o A: There are limiting factors for what properties can have irrigation but most homes don’t have
irrigation systems because it has a high startup costs that you don’t immediately see a return on.
Warranty
Greentree provides a one-year workmanship warranty on irrigation systems.
A manufacturer’s warranty may exist on components.
An extended warranty is available.

Trenching
Maintenance
Check to ensure that the ground is not settling in the location that the trench was dug. If you notice
settling, top-dress as needed.
Specification
FAQ
Q: Does Greentree install the lines?
o A: No, Greentree does not install any electrical or gas lines that require permits.
Warranty Greentree does not warranty any trenching.
Greentree does not warranty any electrical or gas lines that sit within the trench.
Window wells
Maintenance
Routinely clean out your window wells every spring and fall. Leaves, as well as other debris, can block the
weeping tile from draining correctly.
Specification
FAQ Q: I don’t have window wells, do I need any?
o A: You should consider having window wells installed if your windows are less than 3” above the
grade in front of the window and regrading won’t make the window 3” or more above the grade
in front of the window.
Q: Do I need weeping tile in my window well?
o A: Greentree highly recommends having weeping in your window well that connects to weeping
tile that surrounds your home and leads to a sump pump. Without weeping tile, a window well
can fill with water and eventually overflow the window.
Q: Should I have rocks in my window wells?
o A: Yes, rock mulch in your window wells keeps your windows clean by preventing mud from
splashing onto the window when it rains. In a new home, your builder should have installed rock
in the window wells as a step of the building process. If you are in an existing home, you may
want to have your window wells cleaned out and have new rock mulch installed.
Q: My window wells are not draining what can I do?
o A: Reach into the center of the window well and remove any debris. If the problem persists,
contact your window well installer.
Warranty
Greentree provides a one-year workmanship warranty on window wells.
Flooding that occurs in window wells is not warranted as this is a weeping tile issue.

Decks
Wood Maintenance
Treated wood should be left for a year before staining, this will help prevent the stain from peeling.
If the stain begins to split or crack, sand the deck then re-stain.
We recommend using Sansin brand, outdoor wood, semi-transparent stain. Consult Benjamin Moore for
further advice on finishing.
If a board warps or cracks, put in a screw to help straighten or hold together the pieces. The entire board
can be replaced if necessary.
Ensure screws or nails remain below the surface of the decking. If left unattended screws and nails can
become hazardous.
Composite Maintenance Hot grease can melt into composite decking. Please place your barbecue on a mat.
Embers from a fire can melt into composite decking. Do not have a wood fire on a composite deck.
Composite does not need to be stained, but may be if desired.
Ensure Composite boards remain securely fastened and not broken or cracked.
Do not use a high pressure washer on composite decking.
Rinse deck with a garden hose every spring and fall. If necessary, soap may be used to clean a composite
deck.
Railing Maintenance Make sure the hand rail remains smooth with no cracks or slivers. If the railing is aluminum make sure
there are no gouges or cracks.
We recommend a yearly inspection to ensure each post is securely fastened, making sure the screws are
solid and secure.

FAQ
Q: Does composite decking get hot?
o A: The amount of heat that composite decking depends on 2 major aspects. Firstly, the amount
of sunlight the deck receives, the more sunlight, the hotter the material gets! Secondly, the
colour of the material can affect how hot the deck gets, lighter colours don’t absorb as much heat
as darker colours! A deck that receives full sunlight, can become too hot to walk on, especially
with a darker material.
Q: Can composite decking get scratched?
o A: Although composite decking is “scratch resistant” it is not scratch proof, therefore your
decking can be scratched. However, it does take more force to scratch than pressure treated or
cedar decking.
Q: Does composite decking colour fade?
o A: Most composite decking comes with a warranty against fading for between 20 – 25 years!
Q: Is there a tolerance for gaps?
o A: Due to the expansion and contraction of the boards at different temperatures, the spacing at
joints will fluctuate.
Q: Is composite decking slippery?
o A: This can be greatly different between material types. Some materials, like Zuri, are fairly
smooth whereas some, like Trex, are fairly rough. The smoother materials can become slightly
slippery when wet and especially slippery when frosted. The more rough materials grip well when
wet but can be slightly slippery when frosted.
Q: Do I have to stain cedar wood?
o A: You do not have to stain cedar wood, it has natural oils that help to protect it from the
climate! Cedar will fade to a gray over time unless you stain it, but if you do stain it, you may
need to stain it every year
Q: Do I have to stain pressure treated wood?
o A: It is not recommended to stain pressure treated lumber for a minimum of 1 year as it has
been recently coated in a treatment paint that can inhibit the ability of the stain to adhere to the
wood. However as it dries out staining pressure treated wood is recommended to increase the
lifespan. We recommend using Sansin brand, outdoor wood, semi-transparent stain. Consult
Benjamin Moore for further advice on finishings.
Q: What kind of fasteners will my deck have?
o A: Composite decking use hidden clip fasteners in the central portion while mushroom head
screws are used on the borders, sides, and detail work.
o A: Cedar and pressure treated decking use standard, treated, deck screws on their decks, side
skirts, and railing.
o A: The structure of all decks use nails rather than screws as nails have a higher shear strength.
Q: What kind of piles will my deck have?
o A: As a standard we use screw piles on all decks, however this may change to fit your local
building codes.
Q: What is the underside of a deck made of?
[- 32 -]
o A: All of our deck structures are built with pressure treated lumber, to the City of Edmonton
code!
Q: Do I have to get a permit for my deck?
o A: We recommend contacting your local building authority to determine which, if any, permits
may be required.
o A: If requested, your project manager can help to acquire the permit on your behalf!
Q: Will all my steps be the same height?
o A: All of your steps will be within ¼” of each other, aside from the step that meets the ground as
the ground may be uneven.
Warranty Greentree provides a five-year structural warranty against any major structural defects in decks and/or
railing.
Greentree provides a one-year workmanship warranty against any craftsmanship defects in decks and/or

Snow Removal
We recommend using only environmentally friendly ice melter.
We do not suggest using an ice scraper, and rather using only a plastic/poly shovel or broom to clear the
snow. In early winter it is advisable that you throw the snow as far back as you can to allow the easy
storage of snow later in the season
Always use your legs to lift – avoid using your back
For lighter snow falls; your leaf blower will be the most efficient way to clear the snow. For larger snow
falls, we generally recommend using a single stage snow blower.
