GREEN TREE CEMETERY
Greentree Cemetery is located in Greentree Borough, a suburb ofPittsburgh, PA. It is situated on the western side ofGreentree Road (Route 121), 1.2 miles south of Exit 4, Route279 (Penn-Lincoln Parkway).
The property for the cemetery, approximately 1 1/3 acres, waspurchased July 1, 1873 by The German United EvangelicalCongregation in Temperanceville. (Reference: City CountyRecords - Volume 319, Page 351 - Map 37R, Lot 225.) A historyof the church by Oscar L. Jurkat states the cemetery was openedin 1872.
The original congregation of the church was organized in 1860and were German Protestants whose creed was largely Lutheranbut wished to remain independent of denominational dictations. The church was known for years as "Vierhellers" Church, becauseJohn Philip Vierheller, one of the most respected citizens inhis day, was the dominating factor in it. The original churchwas built in 1864 at the corner of Mill and Steuben Streets. The area at that time was identified as Temperanceville and isnow known as West End, Pittsburgh. The building was purchasedby the Jerusalem Baptist Church in 1945 and was designated aHistoric Landmark in 1982.
A new church was built in 1950 and the name has been changed tothe West End United Church of Christ. It is located at 1020Chartiers Avenue, Elliott, Pittsburgh, PA.
This listing is a compilation of a recording of inscriptionsfrom each tombstone in the cemetery and integrating that withinformation presently in the records of the cemetery caretakersas of March 1988. Every effort has been made to extractinformation in an accurate and complete manner .
.\ All references in parentheses ( ) are from information in thecaretakers' records. These records were originally in theGerman language and have been translated. There appears to besome duplication, possibly because of spelling variations. Inthese instances, each entry has been included.More thanrepeatingengravedextracted
one person named on a stone is indicated by notthe surname. "NE" indicates that no death date is
on the stone. Lot numbers and lot owners names arefrom the cemetery records.
There is a section of the cemetery referred to as "Over theHill". This area was not set out in lots and the old recordsare sketchy as to location of the graves. The few markerspresently in this area are in the section titled "Over TheHill". The exact location of these markers has not been notedon the cemetery map.The cemetery is maintained in excellent condition and the onlysigns of aging are the erosion of some stones. The cemetery isstill used for burials but the only burial plots available arethose family owned or those which have been returned by them tobe resold.
