    OWL2

OWL2 is an Online Web Learning and homework system thatwe will use very extensively in Chemistry 307-308 this year. We are

using this system because we believe it will provide very significant help

for you to learn Organic Chemistry. The course package in the bookstore

includes an OWL2 access code. OWL2 includes an ebook version of

your textbook and other resources to allow you to practice chemistry at

your own pace, visualize chemical concepts, improve your problem-

solving skills, and earn better grades. OWL2 will be available on August

26, 2013 for our course, which is called Orgo 307.

A good fraction of the homework in the course will be assigned

and completed using OWL2. Your grades on the homework assigned in

OWL2 may be an important component of your grade in the course.

Therefore, you must register for OWL2 and use it regularly. The OWL2

access code in the course package that you purchased in the bookstore is

what you use to register for OWL2. Do not throw it away. The cost ofreplacing it is quite high. There is a grace period during which you can

use OWL2 without registering. If your financial aid is late, you can still

use OWL2 and get access to the ebook. But otherwise it is advisable for

you to register as soon as you get the access code.

    OWL2 Registration Instructions:

You will need two codes to register for OWL2an access code

which comes bundled with your book, and a course key that will enroll

you in the class. The course key is E-TWQN2Z2QP4UTF. To begin,

    go tohttps://login.cengagebrain.com/cb/login.htmto create a

CengageBrain account. OWL2 recommends using Google Chrome or

Mozilla Firefox. Bookmark this page. If you already have a

account. If you havent purchased thepackage yet, you will have an

initial grace period of a few weeks in which to pay. The remaining timeof the grace period will be displayed on your OWL page. You can enter

To create a tech support ticket, click Yeshere. You will also see a

number of frequently asked questions on the left side and the answers

display on the right when you click on a question. You may get an

answer to your question without going thru the process of creating a tech

support ticket. Once you create a ticket, you will also have the

opportunity to talk with live online chat during certain hours of the day

and a phone number will also be provided so that you can talk live.

Remember, prior to using OWL2, you can run a system check for your

computer by clicking on the Toolslink on the top right and then Run

    System Check.

    Using OWL2

Your first assignment, which has four parts and is due September

6, will introduce you to using OWL2 and ChemDoodle, the graphics

program. This assignment will be graded pass/fail. If you do not

complete all four parts, your grade will be fail. Since OWL2 will be

such an important part of the course, it is essential that you pass this

    assignment.

Every OWL2 assignment will have a due date. If you leave it for

the last minute, computer problems or other catastrophes are likely. Wewill not accept an assignment after the due date. Do not ask for

    extensions.

In addition to the Intro to Owl2 assignments, you will see an

assignment for Chapter 1. This first assignment consists of some simple

questions called Mastery Questions. Their purpose is to help you

master some of the skills presented in this chapter and help you learn

to use the applications in OWL2. Although, it is very unlikely that you

will need them, you will have 5 attempts for each question. This

assignment is also graded pass/fail. To pass you must provide a correct

    answer to every question.

When you enter the assignment, you will see a list of the questions.

Each time you give a wrong answer, OWL2 will warn you that you are

submitting a wrong answer so that you may want to rethink your answerbefore using up an attempt: here is what the warning will look like:

Once you see this warning and hit

the Submit Answer button, you will be charged with an attempt. Youthen have the option of hitting the Try Another Versionbutton to be

granted another attempt. If you have to leave before finishing an

assignment, be sure to hit Save and Exitso that your work will be

saved. When you are done with the entire problem set, hit Submit

    Assignment for Grading.

There will be graded Mastery assignments from every chapter.

They will usually be available on Monday mornings at 8 AM and they

will usually be due on the following Friday (11 Days later) at 11:55 PM.

But you should do them as early as possible because if you do notcomplete the Mastery assignments, you will be unprepared for some of

the assignments that are graded for points. If you are near a borderline at

the end of the semester, a poor record of pass grades on these Mastery

assignments could have a major impact on your grade in the course.

There will also be a second kind of assignment every week for 14

weeks. It will consist of End of Chapter (EOC) questions. Each question

will be worth 1 point so you can get 10 points for the weeksassignment. You will have 4 tries at each question. These points will be

totaled at the end of the semester, the total divided by 2, and then added

to your points for the course. Most of you will get most or all of the

points for these assignments. So not taking these assignments seriously

will put you at a competitive disadvantage. Since the main goal of the

online homework is to help you master the material, working with

friends may be helpful. There will be new assignments every week. They will be available

on Monday mornings at 8 AM and they will usually be due on the

following Friday (11 Days later) at 11:55 PM. We suggest doing the

Mastery exercises as soon as possible and also not leaving the EOC

questions for the last minute. The EOC assignment will have no more

than 10 questions, and the total number of points for the assignment will

    be 10.

    Using the ebook in OWL2

There is also an ebook of our textbook in OWL2 that you can

This app will allow you to take notes as you read this ebook, plus you

will be able to read these notes on your phoneOrgo goes mobile.

With all these toys to play with, you should be able to master the

material and do well in the course.

    One Final Note

If you have any difficulty using OWL2, please use the Technical

Support site, following the instructions provided in previous pages.

There is no point in writing to any of the instructional staff because none

of us are likely to be as knowledgeable about using computers as you

are. The possibility that you will have some problems using OWL2 is

very real. If you leave your assignments until the last day and something

goes wrong, you will not make the deadline. No extensions will be

given for any reason. Do not ask.
