OVERVIEW LESSON SUMMARY: Students will learn about the artist Jackson Pollock and his style of abstract expressionism or “action painting.” They will construct abstract artworks with the use of color, line, texture and the technique of crayon resist. STANDARDS: 1.1.5.D.1 - Identify elements of art and principles of design that are evident in everyday life. o The basic elements of art and principles of design will be discussed by the teacher and the students, when observing Jackson Pollock’s “Action Paintings”. 1.2.5.A.2 - Relate common artistic elements that define distinctive art genres in visual art. o The students will recognize the specific elements present in the style of Abstract Expressionism when discussing Jackson Pollock’s artwork. 1.3.5.D.1 - Work individually and collaboratively to create two- and three- dimensional works of art that make cohesive visual statements and that employ the elements of art and principles of design. o The students will work individually to create a unique crayon and watercolor designs based on their observations of Jackson Pollock’s artwork. The completed works should demonstrate their understanding of Abstract Expressionism, color, line and texture. B. OBJECTIVES: Students will demonstrate creativity and originality in their abstract designs through the use of line, color, texture and crayon resist. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements present in Jackson Pollock’s artwork through class discussion and assessment. Students will recognize the specific elements present in the Abstract Expressionism style of art.

Artist: Jackson Pollock was an American abstract expressionist painter who was famous for innovative "action paintings". Instead of careful brush strokes, Jackson Pollock dripped,

poured, and splattered paint. As Pollock experimented and developed his distinctive techniques, his paintings became ever larger and more dramatic.
