Almost 5 years ago, I held an art exhibition in London called ‘Sugarlumps’. It was a collection of very personal paintings that became the subject of a high court injunction and a long legal battle between me and my former representing gallery.

The case is finally ended and my paintings and I can move on.

In this catalogue you will find the original artworks I have been unable to make available until now and also a small number of newer artworks. It is an erratic snapshot from a few years of my life. Highs, lows and everything in between.

After leaving the storm clouds behind, I renamed this collection ‘Over the rainbow’.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

MAYDAY MAYDAY

The maypole is considered to be a symbol of fertility, so I don’t fancy his chances much. I am fascinated by these quaint old English rituals; sadly nowadays, they

seem only to survive on the odd village green. Long live the peculiar!

BORN T0 BE WILD

I visited beautiful Edinburgh recently and was disturbed to hear a bagpiper playing the rock music of Status Quo. It didn’t seem right; torturing both my ears and the poor bagpipes. I responded with this piece depicting the capture of the innocent,

defenceless pipes and their young.

SOUTER POINT

Souter Lighthouse is on the coast near where I live. I was out and about looking for inspiration but it was a bleak day and the wind was howling across the cliff tops so I went home and settled for a painting of the search itself. I painted it

mostly with a knife.

HOME SWEET HOME

A celebration of mixed relationships. My own mammy was from seafront Hartlepool and daddy was Hungarian and therefore I am part Ghoulash,

part fish and chips.

FUDGE MOUNTAIN

This picture is the result of my frustrated efforts to learn fudge making. Every batch involved many hours of pan stirring …burning sugar and panic. The kitchen became caked in a nightmarish fudgy mess; the fridge stuffed with rejects. I now know it’s easier to paint the

stuff than make it.

HOW MANY TUNNOCKS TEACAKES MUST DIE IN THE NAME OF FASHION?

I love Tunnocks teacakes and consumed in the region of 18 to create this painting. I am prepared to suffer for my art.

JEALOUS JELLY

We all suffer from occasional envy and should resist displaying this but the Fruit Pastilles have the last laugh since they are the best selling sweet at Nestle Rowntrees

(I know because I’ve been on a tour of the factory).

Nestle Rowntrees wouldn’t give me permission to publish this image as a print. Reason: ‘We don’t want to risk being sued by a Jelly baby manufacturer’. Welcome to the age

of litigation, ladies and gents.

KITTEN AT THE ALHAMBRA

I visited the Alhambra one December and although it was bitterly cold, the trees were still full of oranges. We were sitting in the icy sunshine admiring the setting when a litter of ginger kittens emerged from the hedges to play. We stayed and watched

them until it got too cold.

THE BIG CHEESE

Who doesn’t love a good delicatessen counter?

Harrods and Selfridges food halls are the stuff of dreamsfor me. Whenever in London, I make sure always to visitthese wondrous places: not to buy, just to marvel at thelovely things available. The man in this painting was serving in Harrods and I liked his boater, though I created

my own more manageable shop for the setting.

TUTTI FRUITTI

As a little girl, I would sometimes be taken to nearby Redcar for a lemon top: my love of the ice-cream parlour was born. One day, when I can’t paint anymore,

it is my plan to sell Knickerbockerglories by the sea.

VIEW FROM THE PAVEMENT


The idea here was to turn the tables and make the viewer feel as though they are being viewed. It seems to have resulted in the feeling of being very small in the

world, like an ant.

THE SINGING CAT

Stanley was the apple of my eye; a loving marmalade boy. Stanley had no teeth and sometimes when he tried to communicate, no sound would come out. One day, watching his efforts, my small niece said “I think he’s trying to sing”

I thought it was such a lovely idea I had to paint it. Stanley died a year after this painting was finished. I was heartbroken.

This painting is not for sale, but I thought you might like to see it.

POTTY

This is Charlotte, a friend who is rather clever with clay. She once allowed me to have a go on her potter’s wheel. The results of this involved clay mostly becoming attached to the floor, walls, clothing and hair. I pointed

out that her wheel was clearly faulty.

Charlotte and I share a passion for Picasso, so I thought a little nod to cubism might be appropriate for her portrait.

I painted this 7 years ago as a reaction to my experiences in the

commercial art business.

SEVEN WONDERS

An artist’s duty is to go somewhere over the rainbow and bring a little of it back for you.

I will never forget seeing ‘The Wizard of Oz’ for the first time. Thinking I was watching an old black and white film, it was thrilling to witness all those greys give way

to a glorious riot of colour.

Believe it or not, this piece required 2 whole tins of Quality Street and other little favourites. I gave away all the penny toffees but none of the green triangles.
