trade�show�for�industry,�skilled�crafts�andfactories�in�Hanover.�The�company�receivesthe�first�prize�for�its�products�in�the�agri�-culture�and�forestry�class.�Numerous�newcustomers�are�acquired�during�the�1880s�including�chemical�companies,�shipyards,railway�workshops�and�other�up-and-comingbranches�of�industry.�The�Roots�blowers�become�a�best-seller�with�their�increasingpopularity�as�blowers�for�smithy�hearths,ousting�the�hitherto�standard�bellows.�The�company’s�success�is�not�limited�toGermany�alone:�traction�engines�in�particu-lar�help�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�to�in-creasingly�cultivate�new�sales�markets�inRussia,�Austria�and�Hungary.�At�the�sametime�the�product�range�is�constantly�ex�-panded�to�include�drills,�field�forges,�circularsaws�and�well�pumps.�The�foundry�producesnot�only�garden�furniture�and�crosses�fortombstones�but�also�drinking�fountainsthat�are�put�up�in�squares�and�market�places�throughout�Germany.

Founding period in Aerzen 1864–1907

Since 1868, all the castings formachines made in Aerzen wereproduced in the factory’s owniron foundry (at the top).

Aerzener Maschinenfabrik is founded in 1864 by the manufacturer and merchantWilhelm Meyer.

Traction engines for threshing machines become best-sellers.

In 1864 Wilhelm Meyer, son of a Jewish bank and merchant familyfrom Hanover, starts a machinefoundry in Aerzen. The company isgeared for success right from thestart: in 1868 Aerzener Maschinen-fabrik is the first company on theEuropean continent to make posi-tive displacement blowers using the Roots method. In the 1880s the product range is extended to in-clude positive displacement blowers,steam traction engines, drills andcircular saws. An economic boom istriggered in 1897 when the railwayline is opened from Hamelin via Aerzen to Lage. The Weserberglandis now connected to Germany’s industrial centres.

Already as a young man, merchant�WilhelmMeyer�from�Hanover�(1836–1884)�runs�anagricultural�machine�factory�in�Reher�nearHamelin.�Up�to�50�workers�produce�agricul-tural�machinery.�When�the�premises�gettoo�small,�in�1864�Wilhelm�Meyer�founds�a�machinery�factory�in�Aerzen.�He�uses�thenearby�Grieße�stream�to�provide�naturalpower�for�his�machines.�The�company�swiftlyestablishes�contacts�with�England�as�themotherland�of�industrialisation�and�sets�upan�iron�foundry�in�Aerzen.�From�1868�on-wards�the�company�produces�the�first�posi-tive�displacement�blowers�produced�on�theEuropean�continent�using�the�method�de-veloped�by�Francis�Marion�Roots�– blowersthat�are�far�more�efficient�than�convention�-al�machines.�But�to�start�with,�the�positivedisplacement�blowers�are�just�one�of�a�wholerange�of�products.�Initially�they�are�used�inthe�field�forges�also�made�in�Aerzen�wherethey�are�responsible�for�generating�wind.

Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�also�benefitsfrom�the�economic�boom�following�thefounding�of�the�German�Empire.�Meanwhileabout�80�employees�make�their�livelihoodhere.�Among�others,�a�forge�and�a�metal-working�shop�are�added�to�the�factory.Wilhelm�Meyer�retires�from�the�companyin�1872�and�hands�it�over�to�his�youngerbrothers�Sigmund�(1840 – 1911)�andEmil�(1841 – 1899).�The�economic�upswing�enjoyed�byAerzener�Maschi-nenfabrik�duringthis�period�is�dueabove�all�to�thefactory�directorHeinrich�Meier�who�works�tirelesslyat�designing�and�patenting�new�ma�-chines such�as�steam�traction�engines�for�threshing�grain�and�tedder�machines.�He�devotes�particular�attention�to�thesafety�of�his�workers.�For�example,�machinesmade�in�Aerzen�are�designed�with�danger�-ous�cogwheels�securely�accommodated�in�metal�boxes.�In�1878�Aerzener�Maschi-nenfabrik�causes�quite�a�sensation�at�the

Given�the�crisis�in�large-scale�agriculture,from�1894�the�new�factory�director�WilhelmMuhlert�stops�producing�agricultural�ma�-chinery.�Instead�he�focuses�consistently�onmaking�blowers�and�products�for�the�growing�heavy�industry�such�as�smithyhearths,�heating�furnaces�and�pneuma-tic�hammers.�Aerzener�Maschinen�-fabrik�is�quick�to�adapt�tocustomer�requests�and�con-stantly�includes�new�machinesin�its�range�including�pitchmachines�for�breweries�thatapply�a�coating�of�pitch�to�the�inside�of�wooden�barrels.In�1897�Aerzen�is�connectedup�to�the�railway�network�and�a�real�boom�ensues.�

Just�a�few�weeks�later�a�new�production�record�is�set�up:�the�5,000th�positive�displacement�blower�is�finished�and�sent�to�Berlin�by�rail.�

The�new�century�brings�fundamentalchanges�in�the�company�management.�In1902�Sigmund�Meyer�retires�from�businessand�the�long-standing�factory�director�Wilhelm�Muhlert�becomes�the�Managing

Director.�When�profits�fail�to�develop�asexpected,�in�1907�the�engineer�Hermann

Allstaedt�(1873 – 1942)�from�a�wealthyfamily�is�brought�into�the�companyas�personally�liable�partner�and�Managing�Director.�He�turns�thecompany�into�a�GmbH�(limited�liability�company).��

stability�to�Germany�but�this�still�does�notherald�a�golden�era�for�Aerzener�Maschinen�-fabrik.�In�the�crisis�Hermann�Allstaedt�de�-cides�to�start�making�rotary�piston�pumpsagain,�which�his�predecessor�Muhlert�hadstopped�producing�in�the�1890s.�The�rotorsof�the�new�generation�of�pumps�are�basedon�rotary�pistons,�similar�to�the�blower.They�stand�out�with�symmetrical,�two-cogprofiles�so�that�they�can�pump�both�thickand�thin�fluids.�The�new�pumps�are�launch�-ed�in�1926�and�are�soon�in�great�demandparticularly�from�customers�in�the�chemicalindustry.�One�particular�success�consists�in�an�export�order�to�India�for�18�pumps�at�the�end�of�the�1920s.�

Hermann Allstaedt puts�Aerzener�Maschi-nenfabrik�back�on�the�road�to�success.�Heinvests�in�expanding�the�Aerzen�site�and,like�his�predecessors,�focuses�on�expandingthe�range�and�on�product�innovations.�Oneof�the�best-sellers�consists�of�the�“moderndedusting�system”�for�houses�which�thecompany�starts�offering�in�1909.�A�positivedisplacement�blower�from�Aerzen�installedin�the�basement�works�with�a�system�ofpipes�to�remove�dust�from�curtains,�carpetsand�furniture.�In�the�same�year�the�companyobtains�a�patent�for�silencers�for�blowers�toclearly�reduce�the�operating�noise�level�ofthe�machines.�Hermann�Allstaedt’s�willing-ness�to�respond�at�any�time�to�customers’requests�is�demonstrated�by�the�inventionof�the�running�or�guide�wheels�for�turbomachines�in�1910�and�the�start�of�productionfor�turbo�blowers�for�iron�foundries,�collieriesand�chemical�industrial�companies�in�1911.�

With�the�outbreak�of�the�First�WorldWar�in�summer�1914,�many�of�the�200�work�-ers�at�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�volunteerfor�military�service�or�are�conscripted�intothe�armed�forces.�Together�with�the�lack�ofworkers,�Hermann�Allstaedt�also�strugglesto�cope�with�the�restrictions�prevailing�ininternational�trade�relations.�From�1914/1915arms�are�produced�in�Aerzener�Maschinen-fabrik,�including�above�all�gun�carriagesconsisting�of�mobile�steel�frames�for�trans-porting�guns.�All�in�all,�the�company�man�-ages�to�survive�well�during�the�war�years.And�the�first�orders�from�abroad�start�arriving�in�Aerzen�again�already�in�1919.

Following�a�smooth�start�in�the�post-waryears,�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�then�goesthrough�a�difficult�period�under�the�impactof�the�crises�of�the�Weimar�Republic.�Gallop�-ing�inflation�has�a�major�effect�on�work�processes.�As�soon�as�the�workers�receivetheir�daily�wages,�they�go�shopping�tospend�as�much�as�possible�of�their�moneywhich�loses�value�by�the�hour.�In�August1923�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�distributesits�own�emergency�money�to�the�workforce.It�can�either�be�redeemed�with�the�companysolidarity�fund�or�is�accepted�in�payment�bythe�Kreditbank�Aktiengesellschaft�Hamelin.The�currency�reform�at�the�end�of�1923�restores�a�certain�degree�of�economic�

Engineer Hermann Allstaedt, Managing Director of Aerzener Maschinenfabrik since 1907, steersthe company through stormy times:the First World War and hyperinfla-tion. From the mid 1920s, productsmade in Aerzen are being purchasedby an increasing number of pur-chas ers in Germany and abroad. Butafter the stock market crash in 1929the situation becomes increasinglydramatic. The company has to dismiss dozens of workers and closes the foundry. With his bravedecision to specialise from now onin making positive displacementblowers, Hermann Allstaedt sets the points for the company to findits way out of the crisis and into a successful future.

Hermann Allstaedt is ManagingDirector of Aerzener Maschinen-fabrik from 1907 to 1941.

During the crisis of the 1920s,Aerzener Maschinenfabrik focuses on producing positivedisplacement blowers and rotary piston pumps.

The�hesitant�economic�recovery�in�Aerzen�is�brought�to�an�end�in�1929�by�theNew�York�stock�market�crash�and�the�sub-sequent�world�economic�crisis.�Redun�-dancies�cannot�be�avoided.�In�1930�onlyabout�100�workers�are�employed�in�Aerzen.�Furthermore,�the�foundry�is�closed�after�62�years.�This�eliminates�many�productsfrom�the�range.�But�at�the�same�time�Her-mann�Allstaedt�starts�to�produce�rotary�piston�gas�meters�– a�crucial�step�on�theway�to�becoming�specialists�for�positivedisplacement�machines.�Purchasers�soonalso�include�Ruhrgas�AG�and�FriedrichKrupp�AG.�Bolstered�by�this�success,�from1931�Hermann�Allstaedt�focuses�consistent�-ly�on�specialisation.�From�now�on�AerzenerMaschinenfabrik�only�produces�three�differ�-ent�types�of�positive�displacement�machines:blowers,�pumps�and�gas�meters,�thus�settingthe�points�for�moving�the�company�out�ofthe�economic�crisis.

Following�the�seizure�of�power�by�thenational�socialists,�Aerzener�Maschinen�-fabrik�benefits�from�the�general�economicrecovery.�The�first�foreign�commercialagency�in�Milan�is�opened�in�1934.�In�thefollowing�year,�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikreceives�a�large�order�from�the�Soviet�Unionand�supplies�positive�displacement�blowersfor�expanding�the�oil�fields�in�the�Caucasus.A�new�production�record�is�celebrated�in1936�with�the�delivery�of�the�20,000th�positive�displacement�blower.��

In�1954�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�has464�workers�and�office�employees.�Althoughthe�workforce�grows�continuously�as�a�resultof�the�boom�the�company�still�preserves�afriendly�working�atmosphere�like�in�a�big�family.�As�with�his�predecessors,�the�well-being�of�his�employees�is�always�close�toKarlheinrich�Heller’s�heart.�He�lets�the�work-force�participate�in�the�company�profits�andpays�a�special�bonus�for�marriages,�births,anniversaries�and�also�for�building�theirown�homes.�

The�Aerzen�site�is�extended�at�the�endof�the�1950s.�This�entails�moving�the�Grießestream�which�up�to�now�has�run�across�the�company�premises�with�a�constant�riskof�flooding.�Then�today’s�Unit�III�is�con-structed�for�the�turning�shop�and�the�toolshop�as�the�first�large�new-build�after�theSecond�World�War.�Just�after�the�new�unitis�inaugurated,�the�100,000th�positive�

In the middle of the Second�World�War,�in�1941�Hermann�Allstaedt�hands�over�themanagement�of�the�company�to�his�son-in-law�Karlheinrich�Heller�(1903 – 1960)�whojoined�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�as�a�de-sign�engineer�after�graduating�from�theTechnical�University�of�Brunswick�in�1929with�a�degree�of�engineering.�In�1930�hemarries�Hermann�Allstaedt’s�only�daughterAnneliese�Allstaedt�(1909 – 1969).�The�pos�-ition�of�Deputy�Managing�Director�is�givento�an�experienced�employee,�engineer�PaulGrote�(1898 –�1965).�In�1941�the�Ministry�forArmaments�and�Munitions�places�an�orderwith�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�to�make�ascrew�compressor�as�exhaust�compressor�in�new�types�of�submarine.�Following�twoyears�of�negotiations,�a�sub-licence�to�makescrew�compressors�is�obtained�from�theSwedish�company�Ljungströms�Ångturbin,today�Svenska�Rotor�Maskiner�AB�(SRM).As�twin-shaft�positive�displacement�blow�-ers,�these�are�an�ideal�addition�to�the�Aerzen�product�range.�They�achieve�higherpressure�conditions�than�positive�displace-ment�blowers�thanks�to�oil-free�conveyancewith�inner�compression.�Right�from�thestart�Karlheinrich�Heller�plans�to�make�auniversal�screw�compressor,�a�project�

which�he�puts�into�practice�after�the�SecondWorld�War.�Today�the�screw�compressor�isone�of�the�key�products�made�by�AerzenerMaschinenfabrik.�

Despite�the�threat�of�dismantling�afterthe�end�of�the�war�in�1945,�production�inAerzen�is�swiftly�restored.�But�instead�of�highly�specialised�technical�machines,initially�the�company�makes�beet�juice�presses,�oil�mills�and�tobacco�cutters.�Theconsolidation�of�the�economic�situation�inWest�Germany�following�the�Marshall�Planand�the�introduction�of�the�D-Mark�triggerthe�period�known�as�the�economic�miracle.The�West�German�engineering�sector�inparticular�is�booming.�Karlheinrich�Heller�re-organises�the�166�different�type�series�intoa�modular�system�– a�landmark�decisionwhich�by�1954�boosts�productivity�by�nearly50 %.�At�the�same�time�Karlheinrich�Helleralso�focuses�on�new�products�such�as�rotarypiston�pumps�with�the�three-lobe�Rootsprofile�and�double�helical�gear�type�oilpumps.�Other�new�steps�taken�in�the�early1950s�also�include�modernising�and�expand�-ing�the�test�and�calibration�department�as�well�as�setting�up�a�customer�service�department�to�perform�regular�checks�onmachines�delivered�to�customers�to�makesure�that�they�function�perfectly.�Given�thelimited�expansion�possibilities�in�Aerzenand�the�lack�of�any�other�suitable�con-struction�land�available�on�the�spot,�in�1953Karlheinrich�Heller�opens�a�branch�factory�in�Hamelin.�Every�month,�up�to�1,000�rotarypiston�superchargers�are�made�in�the�factoryunit�measuring�2,100�square�metres�for�delivery�to�truck�and�ship�manufacturerssuch�as�Hanomag,�Krupp�and�Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz.

Innovation and investment 1939– 1960

Since the start of the Second WorldWar in 1939, contracts for armskeep Aerzener Maschinenfabrik working at capacity levels. In themiddle of the war Karlheinrich Hellertakes over the management fromhis father-in-law Hermann Allstaedtin 1941 and starts to develop thefirst screw compressors. AerzenerMaschinenfabrik was essentiallyspared from air raids during the war, so that on obtaining permissionfrom the British occupying force,work can begin again already shortlyafter the end of the war. During the1950s, Aerzener Maschinenfabrikalso experiences its own economicmiracle. The site in Aerzen is modern -ised and a branch factory is openedin Hamelin. When Karlheinrich Heller dies suddenly in 1960, he leaves behind a prosperous company.

Superchargers and scavengingblowers made in Aerzen are ingreat demand particularly withtruck and shipbuilding companies.

Karlheinrich Heller runs Aerzener Maschinenfabrik from 1941 to 1960.

The development and productionof screw compressors begins in the middle of the SecondWorld War.

Aerzener Maschinenfabrik also benefits from the sustainedgrowth in West Germany’s economy: here a worker inspectsscrew compressor rotors in the test fixture.

displacement�blower�leaves�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik.�In�the�most�successfulyear�hitherto�in�the�company�history,�themeanwhile�600�employees�generate�overallproduction�amounting�to�1,718�tonnes.�To�quote�the�local�newspaper;�“AerzenerMaschinenfabrik�plays�the�same�role�forAerzen�that�Krupp�plays�for�Essen.”�The�sudden�death�of�Karlheinrich�Heller�on20�July�1960�is�a�great�shock,�not�just�forthe�workforce.�Around�2,000�people�attendthe�funeral.�The�procession�to�the�cemeteryis�so�long�that�at�times�it�disrupts�traffic�on�the�main�B1�road.�This�is�the�end�of�anera�in�Aerzen.��

Innovation and investment 1939– 1960 More internationalisation 1960–2000

Although the workforce growsduring the busy years of the“economic miracle”, the com-pany still preserves a friendlyworking atmosphere like in a bigfamily; group picture showingthe production department.

The�new�employees�in�Emmerthal�benefit�from�the�flexitime�working�arrange-ments�already�established�in�1973�for�thecore�workforce�in�Aerzen�and�can�organisetheir�working�hours�on�a�more�flexible�basisthan�most�other�West�German�employees.The�company�premises�in�Aerzen�are�alsomodernised.�A�new�test�facility�building�is�constructed�in�1975�followed�in�1979�bythe�inauguration�of�the�new�administrationbuilding�on�Hermann-Allstaedt-Weg.

Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�still�continuesto�make�a�name�for�itself�with�spectacularproduct�innovations.�In�1978�for�instance

the�company�presents�the�world’s�largestpositive�displacement�blower�with�a�hugepiston�measuring�1.5�metres�in�diameter�for�use�in�the�steel�industry.�New�standardsare�also�set�in�1984�by�the�world’s�largestscrew�compressors�with�a�rotor�diameter�of�845�millimetres.�Another�important�newconstruction�made�in�Aerzen�is�presented�in1987�with�the�patented�three-lobe�blowers.This�world�innovation�from�Aerzen�sets�anew�market�standard�which�is�still�in�force�today.

Following the death of�her�husband,�Anneliese�Heller�entrusts�the�leadership�ofthe�company�to�Paul�Grote,�a�deserving“Aerzener”.�He�continues�his�predecessor’smodernisation�strategy:�a�new�productionunit�covering�4,500�square�metres,�today’sUnit�IV,�is�constructed�in�1962.�Followingthis�expansion,�in�summer�1963�the�Hamelinbranch�is�integrated�in�the�Aerzener�site.And�the�company�continues�to�grow.�In�the�anniversary�year�1964,�the�workforce�increases�to�700;�thanks�to�the�high�profitsin�preceding�years,�the�share�capital�is�doubled�from�three�to�six�million�D-Mark.�

When�Paul�Grote�dies�in�1965,�Hasso�Heller�(born�1935)�takes�over�the�companymanagement,�just�twelve�months�after�joining�the�management�team�as�an�assist�-ant.�By�the�end�of�the�1960s�Hasso�Hellerhas�added�enhanced�screw�compressors�tothe�delivery�programme�that�compress�air�and�neutral�gases�for�higher�pressures.In�1968�at�the�Hanover�Fair�the�companypresents�the�first�screw�compressors�withoil�injection�for�the�refrigeration�industry.At�the�same�time�Hasso�Heller�ventures�a�step�abroad:�in�1968�he�founds�AerzenFrance�S.A.R.L.�as�the�first�foreign�sub�-sidiary�for�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik.�A�global�customer�service�is�graduallyestablished�over�the�next�few�years.

More internationalisation 1960– 2000

Following the death of KarlheinrichHeller, the company is run for fiveyears by Paul Grote. When he dies, Hasso Heller, the only son ofAnneliese and Karlheinrich Heller,becomes Managing Director. Thenew boss advocates an internation -al approach and in 1968 founds Aerzen France as the first foreignsubsidiary. This is followed by branches in England, the USA andSouth Africa among others. At thesame time, Hasso Heller maintainsthe modernisation course started by his predecessors. He continues toexpand the Aerzen site and launchesinnovative products such as theworld’s largest positive displace-ment blower. The new Delta Screwand Delta Blower series are stillbeing used in the 1990s to cultivatenew customer relations.

Modern times: assembly of a 15 tonne process gas screwcompressor for compressing36,500 cubic metres of coking gas per hour. Modern machinery results in

a clear increase in productivity(at the top). Among others,Hasso Heller adds screw com-pressors supported on roller bearings to the company’srange (on the left).

MORE INTERNATIONALISATION

Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�continues�itsinternationalisation�efforts�in�the�1970s.Aerzen�Machines�Ltd.�is�founded�in�Londonin�1973,�followed�in�1978�by�Aerzen�Neder-land�B.V.�in�Arnheim.�Another�milestone�isset�in�1974�with�type�approval�pursuant�tothe�regulations�of�the�European�EconomicCommunity.�Gas�meters�from�Aerzen�arethus�the�first�rotary�piston�gas�meters�to�be�approved�in�all�countries�of�the�EuropeanCommon�Market.�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikis�also�on�an�expansion�course�within�Ger-many.�This�includes�in�1978�the�takeover�ofthe�company�Thomas�in�nearby�Emmerthal,a�firm�specialising�in�appliance�and�pipelineconstruction,�today�Emmerthaler�Apparate-bau.�As�a�result�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikcan�now�supply�complete�appliances�andplant�sections,�thus�offering�an�increasingrange�of�engineering�services.��

At�the�same�time�the�company�remainson�internationalisation�course.�Followingsubsidiaries�in�Spain�and�Belgium,�in�1983Hasso�Heller�founds�the�first�company�out-side�Europe�with�Aerzen�USA�Corporation.This�is�followed�in�1985�and�1987�by�AirgasCompressor�in�South�Africa�and�Aerzen�Canada;�from�1987�Aerzener�Maschinen�-fabrik�joins�forces�with�its�subsidiary�AerzenSpecial�Products�to�expand�its�internationalsupplier�network�for�accessory�components.By�the�end�of�the�1980s�the�company�hasnine�foreign�subsidiaries.�Around�950�em-ployees�work�for�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikall�over�the�world.�The�financial�figures�alsospeak�for�themselves.�In�1989�the�companygenerates�record�turnover�amounting�to180�million�D-Mark.�

In�1990�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�is�one�of�the�very�first�German�companies�to�be�awarded�the�DIN�EN�ISO�9001�certifi-cate,�thus�showing�its�customers�that�high�quality�standards�are�heeded�in�Aerzen.Hasso�Heller�also�focuses�on�new�pioneer�-ing�products.�The�Delta�Blower�machine�has�been�in�production�since�1994,�followedin�1996�with�the�Delta�Screw�series�of�par�-ticularly�energy-efficient�screw�compressorunits.�After�35�years�at�the�helm�of�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik,�in�2000�HassoHeller�retires�from�operative�business�and�entrusts�his�son�Klaus-Hasso�(born1967)�to�lead�the�family�company�into�the�21st�century.��

At�the�same�time�as�expanding�the�Aerzen�site,�Klaus-Hasso�Heller�also�per-sists�with�his�father’s�internationalisationcourse.�In�14�years�more�than�20�new�com-panies�join�the�Aerzen�Group.�Together�with�East�Europe,�Aerzener�Maschinenfa-brik�also�focuses�on�Asia.�For�the�first�timein�the�company’s�history,�in�January�2011�a�production�site�for�main�components�isfounded�abroad�in�cooperation�with�thesubsidiary�Aerzen�Turbo�in�South�Korea.Furthermore�in�spring�2013�the�companymanagement�makes�around�six�million�Euro�available for�the�construction�of�a�new�company�building�in�Shanghai.�

International�growth�also�makes�in�-creasing�demands�of�the�aftersales�service.�A�proactive�service�has�been�in�place�since2005.�Aerzen�staff�regularly�visit�customersand�their�machinery�on�site�and�offer�theirsupport,�and�the�range�of�services�is�expand�-ed.�Moreover,�in�2006�the�service�companyAbaris�Blower�Repair�N.V.�is�founded�in�Belgium.�This�firm�also�takes�on�the�main-tenance�of�positive�displacement�blowersand�screw�compressors�from�manufacturersno�longer�represented�on�the�market.�In�2009�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�builds�its�own�repair�and�spare�parts�centre.

When Klaus-Hasso Heller 2000�becomeshis�father’s�successor�as�Managing�Directorof�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�in�2000,�hefaces�difficult�circumstances.�The�poor�eco-nomic�situation�in�Germany’s�engineeringsector�means�that�incoming�orders�for�Aerzen�in�1999�remain�below�target.�Klaus-Hasso�Heller�uses�a�whole�bundle�of�measures�to�put�Aerzener�Maschinen�-fabrik�back�on�the�road�to�success.�He�re-structures�the�product�range�and�focusesmanufacturing�even�more�than�before�onstandardised�modules.�He�also�changes�thesales�strategy.�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikappears�not�just�at�trade-fairs�held�mainlyin�Europe�but�also�takes�part�in�exhibitionsoverseas.�Like�his�predecessors,�Klaus-HassoHeller�invests�heavily�in�the�Aerzen�site.The�efforts�soon�start�to�take�effect.�Ordersworth�a�record-breaking�128�million�Euro�are�received�in�2004.

The�company�premises�continue�to�ex-pand�in�the�next�few�years:�in�2008�a�newProduction�Centre�is�inaugurated�for�screwcompressor�stages�and�blower�units.�In�theanniversary�year�2014,�a�new�office�buildingwill�be�completed�together�with�a�logisticscentre.�At�the�moment,�the�company�head-quarters�in�Aerzen�and�the�subsidiaries�inRinteln�and�Emmerthal�have�a�workforce�

of�around�1,300�employees.�This�makesAerzener�Maschinenfabrik�one�of�the�largestemployers�in�the�region.�The�employees�appreciate�their�company�as�a�reliable�part-ner�with�a�friendly�working�atmosphere�likein�a�big�family.�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikactively�cultivates�the�next�generation�ofemployees�particularly�in�the�technicalsector.�This�is�why�the�company�appears�at�training�fairs,�gives�technical�seminars�at�Hanover�University�and�offers�an�attractive�graduate�entry�programme�for�young�engineers.

Systematic approach to growth: »Expect Performance« 2000– 2014

Economic crisis in the engineeringsector with fewer orders and short-time working: on becoming ManagingDirector of Aerzener Maschinen -fabrik in 2000, Klaus-Hasso Hellerfaces major challenges. He restruc -tures the production programme,streamlines internal processes, invests in the Aerzen site and forgesahead with internationalisation. At the same time he focuses on new energy-efficient products suchas the Delta Hybrid, the world’s firstseries of rotary piston compressors.His efforts pay off. In the anniver-sary year 2014, the order books ofAerzener Maschinenfabrik are wellfilled and around 2,000 workers are employed at the company head-quarters and in the more than 40 subsidiaries worldwide.

Investment in the Aerzen site:numerous new buildings havebeen erected in recent years.

The�success�of�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrikis�still�driven�by�quality�products�and�prod�-uct�innovations.�For�example,�blowers�andscrew�compressors�made�in�Aerzen�are�nowbeing�used�increasingly�for�the�treatmentof�biogas.�At�the�2010�IFAT�environmenttrade�fair�in�Munich�the�company�presentsthe�Delta�Hybrid�as�the�world’s�first�seriesof�rotary�piston�compressors�which�con-sume�up�to�15 %�less�energy�than�conven-tional�compressors.�Energy�is�also�saved�by�the�5th�generation�of�turbo�blowers�forparticularly�efficient�generation�of�processair.�In�2010�Aerzener�Maschinenfabrik�ismentioned�for�the�first�time�in�the�“Lexikonder�deutschen�Weltmarktführer”�(Encyclo-paedia�of�German�World�Market�Leaders).�
