Outram School Newsletter Volume 3 Number 2 – 4 August 2016 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa At the time of writing, I have just arrived home from the Taieri Schools’ Music Festival. It was a real treat to see the massed school choir on the large Dunedin City Town Hall stage. With largish choir numbers from each participating school, as an assembled group they looked impressive and filled the vastness of the stage with ease. The evening was described as a celebration of music and performing arts from the Taieri and indeed it was. To have the choir supported by such groups as the Taieri College Kapa Haka, the Meehan Dance Group and the Mosgiel Brass Band added to the enjoyment of the night. The stars of the night of course were the students and the presentation of songs was a good reward for the hours of preparation both at school and all together at Silverstream School. My personal favourites were the David Bowie Medley and the finale of California Dreaming. I have to admit I was a bit nervous about what a school choir would do with some of Bowie’s classics but they did the great man proud. Heroes in particular sounds really good as a massed choir item. I am a sucker for California Dreaming and the choir did a fine job of this classic piece of 1960’s pop history. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to Erika Ward for all her work in preparing the choir. It was obvious our students enjoyed the experience with even some impromptu dance moves from a group of our lads to go with their singing. We are proud of you all. 2016 Outram School Cross Country Date: Thursday 11 August Venue: West Taieri Rugby Sports Grounds Start Time: 1.00 pm (Lunch on the Thursday will be 12.00 to 12.45 pm) Order of Races (All times are approximate) 1:10 pm Y1 boys 1:15 pm Y1 girls 1:20 pm Y2 boys 1:25 pm Y2 girls 1:30 pm Y3 boys 1:35 pm Y3 girls 1.40 pm Yr 4 boys 1.45 pm Yr 4 girls 1:50 pm Yr 5 boys 1:55 pm Yr 5 girls 2:00 pm Yr 6 boys 2:05 pm Yr 6 girls 2.10pm Yr 7/8 girls 2.20pm Y7/8 boys 10 August 11 August 16 August 18 August 23 August 24 August 25 August 29 August 2 September 14 September 21 September 23 September 10 October BOT Meeting Yr 7&8 Information Evening School Cross Country Taieri Cross Country Ukelele Jam Y5/6 Netball Tourny Hui Ako Y7/8 NetballTourny Y7/8 Naseby Day Otago Primary Cross Country BOT Meeting Talent Quest Last Day Term 3 Term 4 Starts School contact details: 1 Beaumaris Street, Outram. Please note, if the weather conditions make it unpleasant to have the students wait as spectators, we will bring the age groups to the grounds at a set time for their race. Course Details: Indicative maps of the course for each age group are available on the newsletter page of the school website. Notes:

- Parking – parking will be limited at the rugby club – once the car park is full please park on the road. The race course will extend up both sides of the driveway – please be aware of this when parking and keep these areas clear.

- Adults will be free to position themselves at any suitable vantage point around the course – students will be kept together as a group between the finishing chute and club rooms

- The course is wet and muddy in places – two pairs of shoes are recommended, one for running in and

a dry, clean spare pair for after (and a plastic bag)

- Please ensure all runners have warm clothing for before and after their race

- Drink bottles are recommended

- If you are taking your child home with you at the end of the event, please inform the class teacher

- This is a house event so house colours are being encouraged

This is a competitive event but not all children are runners - please positively promote the ‘Have A Go’ message Nga mihi nui

FOS First Aid Kits Fundraiser We are running the very popular first aid kit fundraiser again over the next 4 weeks. Many, many people missed out last time and once some saw the high quality of the product, they wished they had purchased more. Get in early for your Father’s Day gifts or make sure you have one in each vehicle, especially for those winter sports injuries. They also make a great gift for the hard to buy for person, so do some early Christmas shopping too. Maybe you are well stocked at your place but you have workmates, neighbours, friends or family that may be able to help you out with orders. All orders are DUE IN to the office by Friday 5th of August. Please see the information sheet and order form for full details at the back of this newsletter or contact Jolene Casey if you have any queries. [email protected] Ph.
