DA N C E W I T H M E TECHNICAL ADVISE FORPRESCHOOL, PRE-K AND KINDERGARTEN DANCERS

The two most important classes for dancers in preschool, Pre-K and kindergarten are: Tap and Ballet • Tap is essential as it is a dance form that helps the young dancer with coordination, rhythm, timing and musicality; giving a child a music foundation which is essential for all forms of dance.

• Ballet helps instill etiquette such as listening, following instructions and being respectful to others. Pre-ballet fundamentals and exercises are taught to increase creativity, flexibility, concentration and focus; providing a strong foundation for continued dance education at Utah Dance Artists.

• Tap and Jazz are combined together in a combo class at this age because jazz is usually the more popular genre that young dancers want to take; however, tap serves as the more important and critical building block for preschool aged children.

*Additional dance classes available for dancers at this age: Hip-Hop, Acro/tumbling, and Fit Kids

*Classes are subject to change or be cancelled based on enrollment and teacher requirements.*Enrolled participants of changed or cancelled classes will be provided with alternative class options. *For the most up to date schedule, please see the website at www.UtahDanceArtists.com.

TECHNICAL ADVISE FORDANCERS IN LEVEL 1 - LEVEL 4

The two most important classes for dancers at this age: Tap and Classical Ballet • Tap is essential as it is a dance form that helps the young dancer with coordination, rhythm, timing and musicality; giving a child a music foundation which is essential for all forms of dance.

• Classical Ballet provides the necessary technical foundation, quality of movement and artistry that supports most genres of dance. In ballet levels 1 - 4, we focus on developing a technical foundation, body alignment and posture of the dancer. In addition to the many physical benefits of classical training (impeccable technique and a beautiful sculpted body), ballet helps develop the mind and attitude of the dancer with discipline, focus and an appreciation of structure, which are critical attributes for continued and successful dance education. Ballet training is essential for any dancer who wants to excel in jazz and contemporary styles as the technique and vocabulary for these disciplines come from ballet.

• Ballet classes are held twice a week for level 1 and up. Dancers can intensify their technical training by adding Ballet Intensive to their schedule; this will add one more additional ballet technique class each week.

• At this age, it only benefits a child to add other genres to their training (such as jazz, tumbling and hip hop) if they are already taking tap and ballet classes.

• If a dancer trains in tap and ballet until the fourth grade, technically they will be ready for level 5 jazz without ever taking a jazz class. This is because they will have developed a proper technical foundation (from ballet) and the intricate skills in musicality and coordination (from tap).

TECHNICAL ADVISE FORDANCERS IN LEVEL 5 - ADVANCED DANCERS

The most important classes for dancers at this age: Classical Ballet, Jazz and Modern for specific dance goals

• Classical Ballet should continue and always be a part of any dancers training as it provides the necessary technical foundation, quality of movement and artistry that supports most genres of dance. By the time a dancer is in ballet level 5, they have been perfecting their technical foundation, body alignment and posture. In level 5 – Advanced, we focus on quality of movement and developing artistry. In addition to the many physical benefits of classical training (impeccable technique and a beautiful sculpted body), ballet helps develop the mind and attitude of the dancer with discipline, focus and an appreciation of structure which are critical attributes for continued and successful dance education. Ballet training is essential for any dancer who wants to excel in jazz and contemporary styles as the technique and vocabulary for these disciplines come from ballet.

• Ballet classes are held twice a week for levels 5 and up. Dancers can intensify their technical training by adding a Ballet Intensive class to their schedule; this will add one more additional ballet technique class each week.

• In level 5, a dancer will want to add jazz to their dance training, as they are approaching their “Tween” years. Jazz technique will build strength, flexibility, body and mental awareness and style; providing the necessary knowledge and skills for possible participation in junior and senior high school extracurricular activities such as dance company, drill team, and musical theatre. Because of the technical demands in jazz, students are encouraged to supplement their jazz training with classical ballet and/or jazz technique classes.

• Modern/Contemporary is another dance genre that would be important to add at this level if a dancer wants to be on a high school dance company (as most high school dance companies are modern based) and if they plan to continue dance in higher education.

• If a dancer wants to take pointe, they will want to register for pre-pointe in level 6. Dancers who register for pointe, must be registered for ballet twice a week and be in ballet level 6 or higher.

*Classes are subject to change or be cancelled based on enrollment and teacher requirements*Enrolled participants of changed or cancelled classes will be provided with alternative class options. *For the most up to date schedule, please see the website at www.UtahDanceArtists.com.

TECHNICAL ADVISE FORDANCERS IN TEEN A & TEEN B

The two most important classes for dancers at this age: Classical Ballet and Jazz

• The purpose of the Teen Program is to re-focus on the dancer’s technical foundation, body alignment and posture in classical ballet and jazz technique; this will provide a strong foundation for continued dance education in all other genres of dance.

• Teen Ballet is a “recital” class held once per week. We strongly recommend adding the Teen Ballet Technique class as a second ballet class if the dancer is serious about their training and wants to move from the “Teen Level” to the Intermediate Levels.

• Teen Jazz is a “recital” class held once per week. We strongly recommend adding the Teen Jazz Technique class as a second jazz class if the dancer is serious about their training and wants to move from the “Teen Level” to the Intermediate Levels.

• Teen Modern/Contemporary is another dance genre that would be important to study at this age/level if a dancer’s goal is to be on a high school dance company (as most high school dance companies are modern based).

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

CLASSICAL BALLET

Classical Ballet provides the necessary technical foundation, quality of movement and artistry that supports most genres of dance. In ballet levels 1 - 4, we focus on developing the technical foundation, body alignment and posture of the dancer; while in ballet levels 5 and up we focus on quality of movement and developing artistry. Ballet classes are held twice a week for levels 1 and above. For a third weekly ballet class, dancers can speak to Customer Service to add a Ballet Intensive class to their schedule at the UDA Draper studio.

BALLET INTENSIVE

The main focus of the Ballet Intensive class is to give additional training to serious dancers who want optimal technical training. This class is designed to be added as the third ballet class to those dancers in level 1 and above who are already taking the required two ballet classes at the South Jordan studio. This Ballet Intensive class is held at the UDA Draper studio with the competitive dancers. *Dancers who add a Ballet Intensive class to their schedule should also consider adding pre-pointe to their schedule once they are in ballet 6. This provides our serious ballet students ballet class four times a week.

BALLROOM

This class is designed to introduce and educate students in a variety of ballroom dance styles. The first objective is to establish a strong foundation for students to build upon. We do this by focusing on the following areas of ballroom technique: dance position, head alignment, balance, and balance between partners, footwork, leading, and following. All ballroom participants will be required to compete twice during the year: November through March. Competition preparation will take place from September to mid-March, and recital preparation will take place mid-March to June. Technique will be a main focus all year. All dancers registering for this class must register with a partner.

PRESCHOOL BALLET

The main focus of all preschool classes is to foster a love for dance and learning. This usually is the first experience in a dance class with a teacher and other students; therefore, etiquette such as listening, following instructions and being respectful to others is emphasized. Pre-ballet fundamentals and exercises are taught to increase creativity, flexibility, concentration and focus; providing a strong foundation for continued dance education at Utah Dance Artists.

FIT KIDS

Fit Kids is designed to camouflage fitness components; helping young children develop healthy exercise habits while having fun. Classes are designed to raise your child’s heart rate, increase endurance and flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles while participating in fun games and activities rather than structured exercise. Classes will combine Thai Chi, yoga, Cardio Conditioning, Fitness Circuits and Relays that incorporate running, jumping, leaping and crawling! This class will raise your child’s heart rate and their love for physical activity.

HIP HOP

Hip Hop is a street style of dance that tends to be less structured than other dance forms as it focuses on self-expression and movement that involves the whole body. Hip hop mixes funk and video dance styles, focusing on its own technique that consists of gliding, popping, locking and breaking. Hip Hop is perfect for the beginning or advanced student who has the desire to partici-pate in a popular and energetic dance style which does not require knowledge or trainingin classical technique.

JAZZ

Jazz allows students to dance to today’s popular music from current music artists. Jazz is a fun, high-energy dance form that steals and borrows movement from ballet technique, modern, hip hop and even ethnic forms of dance. The focus of this class is to build strength, flexibility, body and mental awareness and style; providing the necessary knowledge and skills for possible par-ticipation in junior and senior high school extracurricular activities such as dance company, drill team, and musical theatre. Because of the technical demands in jazz, students are encouraged to supplement their jazz training with classical ballet or an additional jazz technique classes.

JAZZ TECHNIQUE

The main focus of this class is to give dancers the same opportunity and benefits of our normal jazz class without the commitment of learning choreography and participating in UDA’s annual recital. This allows dancers to target the technical aspect of jazz such as leaps, turns and jumps as well as developing overall strength and flexibility. This class cannot be taken by itself; it is designed to be added as a second class for dancers who are already enrolled in jazz.

MODERN/CONTEMPORARY

Modern dance is increasingly popular as it lends itself to the study of contemporary movement and style. Modern technique is an important study for dancers who want to improve in contemporary and lyrical styles of dance or who have the desire to be on their high school dance company. Most high school dance companies are modern based. Training in modern (as well as ballet and jazz) is strongly encouraged for dancers that want to receive a higher education in dance or plan to have a professional career as a performer or dance teacher.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

POINTE

Pointe is recommended for all serious ballet students and a necessity for any dancer who plans on majoring in ballet in higher education or considering ballet as a professional career. Pointe can only be considered after a dancer has had four years of classical training and has completed a year in the pre-pointe class. Even then a dancer must receive permission to advance to the beginning - advanced level pointe classes require an evaluation and approval by the studio director.

PRE POINTE

In this class, therabands as well as partner, barre and center exercises are used to build overall strength and flexibility in the feet and ankles; ensuring that dancers are properly prepared to receive their pointe shoes. When each dancer is ready to go “en pointe”, they are individually and properly fitted in their pointe shoes by their teacher; allowing each dancer to continue to build strength in their shoes from this time forward. Dancers must be in at least level 6 to start this class. The pre pointe class does not participate in the UDA June Recital.

TAP

Tap is an important dance form for dancers from preschool through the fourth grade; serving as a critical building block for all dance forms as it develops a strong foundation of coordination, rhythm, timing and musicality. Lower levels of tap will master basic tap technique while intermediate and advanced tap levels will learn more intricate and complex tap steps involving syncopated rhythms.

TAP/JAZZ COMBO

The main focus of all preschool classes is to foster a love for dance and learning. This usually is the first experience in a dance classroom with a teacher and other students; therefore, etiquette such as listening, following instructions and being respectful to others is emphasized. Basic jazz and tap fundamentals are taught to increase coordination, rhythm, timing and musicality; providing a strong foundation for continued dance education at Utah Dance Artists.

ACROBATICS/TUMBLING FOR DANCERS

UDA’s Acrobatic Arts program is a professional curriculum designed to promote excellence in flexibility, strength, balance, limbering, tumbling, and partner/group stunting. This 12-level program will help dancers learn the necessary exercises and skills to technically master tumbling skills that are commonly used in dance such as aerials, back handsprings, aerial walkovers and layouts; while equally gaining the grace, flexibility, balance, and strength to seamlessly, beautifully, and safely perform all skills on a stage or hard floor—away from tumbling mats.

WORDS OF WISDOMRegarding Registration and Participation

1. Technical dance classes offer more “bang for your buck”, as they will help instill technique and develop a strong dance foundation for your dancer.

2. Any genre of dance that a child can continue with in college such as ballet, jazz, tap, modern and ballroom are classes where money is well spent.

3. If a child purely wants to dance for recreation, then hip hop is a good class to take, as it is a “street style” of dance which does not require knowledge or training in classical technique.

4. If a dancer wants to increase their technique, they should first add more ballet technique classes (UDA’s Ballet Intensive) and secondly, more jazz technique classes (UDA’s Jazz Technique).

5. The Ballet Intensive class is for dancers who are enrolled in ballet twice per week and want to add an additional ballet class. The Ballet Intensive class serves as a third ballet technique class to intensify technical training and is at the UDA Draper studio.

6. If your dancer is interested in dancing on pointe, then they should start the pre-pointe class when they are in ballet level 6.

7. Dancers in levels Teen A and B are only required to do ballet one time per week. If they want to increase their technical training they should add either a teen ballet or jazz technique class to their schedule (and will be required to do so if they participate in the PEEPs and the Ensemble Performance Program).

8. If your dancer wants to fast track their training or has the desire to achieve a higher level of technique, artistry and performance, they should consider participating in one of our UDA Programs: PEEPs, Ensemble, Varsity, Conservatory or AIT.

9. If you have a dancer in the 1st - 6th grade who wants more performing opportunities in the community without the added cost and intensity of competitive dance, they are strongly encouraged to participate in our PEEPs Performance Program.* 10. If you have a dancer in the 7th - 12th grade who would like more performing opportunities in the community without the added cost and intensity of competitive dance, they are strongly encouraged to participate in our Ensemble Performance Program.* 11. If your dancer’s goal is to participate on the high school dance company or drill team, they are strongly encouraged to participate in our Varsity Competitive Program; available for dancers in 1st - 9th grades.*

12. If your dancer plans on continuing their dance education after high school through higher education or professional experience, they are strongly encouraged to participate in our Conservatory Competitive Program; available for dancers in 2nd - 12th grades.*

13. If your dancer wants to learn how to choreograph and teach, they are strongly encouraged to participate in our Artists in Training Program, so your dancer will have the opportunity to do both within the UDA Studio.*
