OUR SAVIOR’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

SEPTEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER

A Dialogue of Faith: Christianity and Islam

As Lutherans, we are the reformers of the church. We are in dialogue within the body of Christ and with other faiths throughout the world.

On Sunday, September 10th we will have a guest speaker, Regina Mustafa. She will join us for our worship service and then lead an interfaith dialogue following the service in which she will present some of the basics of the Islamic faith, a brief history of Islam in America, and then a time for dialogue. This interfaith dialogue will be similar to the ones she leads in Rochester. Join us for this unique opportunity as we welcome Regina to our congregation.

Regina Mustafa is the founder of Community Interfaith Dialogue on Islam (Rochester, MN), a host of the Faith Talk Show, a member of the Rochester City Ethical Practices Board and the 2016 recipient of the Rochester Mayor’s Medal of Honor for her leadership and service to the community. Ms. Mustafa joined one of our Rochester ELCA congregations to see the Luther/Reformation Exhibit in Minneapolis this past January. "My inspiration comes from my children. I want a better future for them, a future where they can proudly hold their heads up high as Muslims and Americans. Americans, and especially Minnesotans, are really warmhearted and open-minded people.”

****NEW OPPORTUNITY***** After a recent request, OSL has established an investment account that can accept donations of stocks or mutual funds from individuals for the general budget. There are potential tax benefits for the donor as well as benefitting OSL. If you have questions or are interested, contact Lori Schlitter.

One year ago, Kara and I moved back to my home state of MN and during Ag Days I began ministry as lead pastor of Our Savior’s. Thank you to the call committee, executive committee, staff members, church council and the members of Our Savior’s their partnership in the in the Gospel ministry.

Now that Kara and I have a home in Spring Valley we are settling in to the community while preparing the “Van House” home in Austin for sale. A special thank you to the “moving crew” of Rick, Scott, Jacob & William. I highly recommend them. ☺

Much has changed in the world since last August. Intolerance and division has grown within our nation. Polarity within our political structures carries on.

We are people who have received the Good News. This gift from God has changed our lives. We are a new creation in Christ. For that we give thanks and praise. As a faith family, we are able and called to be ambassadors of Christ for the world. Love of neighbor, and especially stranger, is another gift we have which we need to pass on to one another in our communities. You are a living image of Jesus which people encounter.

Now more than ever we must continue to share the Good News/Gospel of repentance and forgiveness, reconciliation to God and to each other and bring God’s justice in the midst of a fractured world where too often animosity and injustice infect society. Page 2

Keep up your prayers for peace and unity, speak out against hate speech and acts, racism, violence, intolerance, prejudice, poverty, discrimination, sexism, and those who use terror to silence and frighten others. Continue to be activists for God’s way and not divisive ways of humanity which seek to keep us apart. Pray, speak, act. Let the light of Christ shine out from your heart in your words and deeds.

Pastor Mark

Join the festivities and experience the unique refreshments, atmosphere & Lutheran fun as Pastor Mark celebrates his 30th

Anniversary of Ordination Sunday, September 17th at 10:15 AM!

On September 24th, we are having a Blessing of Combines/ Harvest Worship Service. We know it would be hard to have farmers bring their equipment to the service so we thought of another way to share what you do. Please email selfies or pictures of you with your farm/harvest equipment to either Darla Erickson at [email protected] or Renee at the church office at [email protected] or bring a copy to the church office by Thursday, September 21st. Pictures can be of toy tractors and farm equipment, too. Also bring your farm toys to the church service so it can receive a blessing. Blessings on the harvest season!

’With Pastor Mark Van House

Psalm 1 is a beautiful image of people who are blessed with happy souls who flourish in daily life. “Happy are those who . . .delight in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.”

Life is filled with challenges and joys, obstacles and detours, hopes and surprises. Yet the happy soul has found that growing deep into the Word of God brings energy for everything we experience in life. It is my delight to visit with people who have drawn from the waters of life from the Lord. I hear stories about how Grandma took them to church or how Dad was involved with the Youth League. I hear remembrances of mutual prayer with a dear friend or of the neighbor who came to the rescue in time of need. I see how the promises of God from scripture are lived each day in the lives. I watch the smile in the eyes when a truth of God’s Word takes a new root in the heart.

How do you nurture God’s Word in your life? Do you find wonder in the growth of crops into yet another season? Do you ask what God is doing while watching the news? Do you listen to preaching and teaching and do you learn something anew about God’s mercy in your life today? Do you tell God the deepest thought of your heart and listen for his wisdom?

The poem “The Water Trees” from Paul Turby and Alice Springs celebrates the richness of life that does not fear but delights in the Lord.

The Water Trees There are trees in the desert That will send down a root so deep They find the underground seas And siphon up life

Other trees measure water by the drop And horde what why have Make leaves like needles That do not dance in the wind And never come loose

The water trees live a riotous life They carry leaves like a florist Heading for a celebrity wedding Their branches provide enough shelter To put the Hilton chain in the shade Page 3

And they drop their leaves And grow new ones In shameless abandon A thousand animals And a million insects at their base Burrow and dance in that leaf shower

For water trees care nothing For weather forecasts Or for cloudless skies For they are thick at the trunk And green at the tips and they never go thirsty

May God grant me the grace to live like a water tree.

Our Savior’s Mission Statement Using God’s Word as a foundation, Our Savior’s Lutheran shall, through meaningful worship, study, prayer and mission outreach, provide a Christ-centered atmosphere of enthusiasm, support, sensitivity and openness to all people. God’s people find a place of belonging, God’s people devoted to seek God’s purposes, God’s people committed to compassionate caring.

As of August 3, Grace Notes Ministry has sent 839 notes written by 110 writers, an average of more than 26 notes per week. We thank you for your prayers and support and your contributions of cards and stamps. We are in need of

more writers at 9:30 AM on Thursdays. Come any time—this can be but doesn’t have to be a weekly commitment. We will help you with what to say in the notes and you will be blessed while you are blessing others! Contact Shirley Gangstad, Lucille Daggett or Turby Marchant with questions.

with Pastor Betsy Dartt

Last month I, the Stewardship Team and the Executive Committee “Asked” you to consider increasing your giving. “Thank” you for responding with your increased giving this past month. We still need to pay back the $20,000 of our line of credit, and if you haven’t

already done so, please consider what you can give above and beyond your regular offering (weekly/monthly) to support our Gospel Ministry and pay off this debt. Your generosity reflects the gifts of God in your life.

We begin this Fall with our Stewardship Emphasis of Ask, Thank, Tell (Augsburg/Fortress Press). We’ll learn that paying the bills is not the goal of stewardship. It’s about strengthening our discipleship and with that, to find out how it is that “When the Bible talks about stewardship it almost always talks about the intimate connection between how a person handles financial matters and that person's relationship with God. Stewardship is an intensely spiritual matter that lies close to a disciple's relationship with Jesus.”

In messages and education opportunities we’ll explore what it means to be good stewards of God’s creation, of all that God has gifted to us. We will be reminded that we are people who live out of abundance rather than scarcity – even when it may seem as though we have little to give back to God. All that we have is God’s and giving back to God with our time, talents and treasures supports our various ministries. A few of these, which your giving supports are: Saturday and Sunday worship services, including our TV ministry and sermons on You Tube; Sunday School, Confirmation and Youth Group; book studies and other adult education; baptisms, funerals and weddings; fellowship opportunities such as coffee time after service; support of Lutheran Campus Ministry for our young adults; providing school supplies to children in the community; providing food for the food shelf; support of Good Earth Village and sending children to camp; etc.

Thanks for being partners in these and other ministries within our faith family and in our local and global community. Your support allows us to “Tell” the story of God’s love for us and the world. Page 4

some changes to try to even out the lists with

people who can be available to respond in service.

For a number of reasons, there are people who are

not included on the lists (shut-in, live out of town,

have indicated a desire not to be contacted, etc.)
