Greetings Northern Lights Parish, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say Rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4). We, at the Northern Lights Parish, have a lot to rejoice about as we look forward to September and the coming events of this fall. Release time and confirmation will start at the end of September. There is a new or, perhaps, renewed liturgy for communion Sundays in which we will all be starting on September 5th. Churches are preparing for a day of service in the community with various planned activities There are a host of events and groups that are starting or restarting this month as we listen to what God is calling us to be and to do. As these events and groups get started, it is important for us, as a Parish, to give thanks for God’s continued faithfulness to each of us as individuals, as churches, and as a Parish. This month presents a tremendous opportunity for us to tell the story of God’s faithfulness as these events and groups get going. Be sure to share what this church, what God, and what your faith mean to each other, to those who visit, and with me. This is a ministry that requires us to be in community with each other and part of that is telling our stories and to let the Holy Spirit be at work. So let me be the first to say that Megan and I are grateful for the way we have been welcomed into this community of faith. The Northern Lights Parish has gone above and beyond to help us feel at home. We welcome the joyful opportunity to get to know each one of you. I am excited to see what God has in store for us, whether known or unknown to us. We have the confidence in knowing that God, through the Holy Spirit, is at work in and among us. We will certainly encounter things we know and things that we do not. Let us face these things together as a community of faith. “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7) In Christ, Pastor Eric Thiele

Pastor Larry Smith will be leading our worship service on September 4th

Pastor Smith is a retired Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He recently served for

two years as Interim Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely. He and his wife, Pastor Susan Smith, live on

White Iron Lake in Ely. Pastor Larry was born and grew up in Port Huron, Michigan and Pastor Sue in Fort

Wayne, Indiana. Together they have lived in many places, including New Jersey, New York, Omaha, Kenosha,

WI, and the Twin Cities. The Smiths have two grown children, two grandchildren, and one great-grand-child.

Pastor Larry enjoys the Boundary Waters, living in Ely, jig-saw puzzles, walking and hiking, boating, fishing,

reading, people, Habitat for Humanity and working outdoors. His favorite Bible verse is Galatians 3:28.

September with WOMEN of the ELCA

As Summer draws to an end, we find ourselves starting activities that bring us together to share fellowship

and to plan our mission/fundraising work. The circles will meet again starting on September 13 at Our

Savior’s; Faith Circle at 1:00 p.m. and Hope Circle at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are on the second Tuesday of

every month. The door is open to everyone -- come and join us for a time of fellowship and sharing.

We will have our Fall Gathering of the Women of the Laurentian Conference on Saturday, October 8,

2016, at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, MN. The theme for the Gathering is “Building Bridges.” The

keynote speakers will be a Muslim couple from the Islamic Resource Group. This organization’s mission

is to “build bridges of understanding between Muslims and the community through education and

dialogue.” Sounds like a very interesting presentation. All are welcome to attend. If you are interested,

please let me know by October 4.

Quilting will start up again on September 14 at 9:00; continuing every Wednesday thereafter.

Join us for socializing while doing creative sewing (no prior experience required).

Our quarterly general meeting will be held on September 22, at 7:00 p.m.

Pastor pondering – September 2016

Greeting in Christ;

As we all look back over the last three months of summer we will wonder where the time went, reflect on the

stormy summer and give thanks to God that he has gotten us through all those reunions, family visits and

friends visiting. God is an Awesome God. I hope that with all the family and friends this summer your Spirit is

feeling renewed in new ways and refreshed from the activities of last year.

Upon us lies a new year. A years of making fresh new starts weather we are in school, college, home, or a job.

If you are starting school, church, job whatever fresh this year, this is your opportunity to truly make a fresh

start with the Spirit of God within your heart.

Surrender everything that happened last year and make this one total new by surrender yourself to a new way

and a new beginning. If you are in the same school as last year – it will not be the same. If you are in your

church as you were last year - it will not be the same. If you are in your home as you were last year – it will

not be the same. For one thing, we have all grown a year old and we hope all a little wiser.

When you surrender yourself to a new beginning you are giving up the old and pressing on to a new way, new

opportunities that you did not or felt that you could not participate. To surrender yourself to a new way –

your time, talents, resources, relationship, prayer time, friends will all change, remember they too have grown

one year older. When you surrender yourself you will read different book, learn different skills, and who

knows you might enjoy something that you never thought possible. And you will have a new look at faith.

When you surrender yourself to God, you will seek to be a follower of Christ, and through those opportunities,

you will become closer in a relationship with God. Oh, there will be some days that you yearn for the old, but

that will never happen because we have all grown a year older and a year wiser. As you surrender yourself to

God, you will realize that God wants more from you and just when you think that you cannot give one more

ounce, guess what – a ton comes.

This fall take advance of the many opportunities for your Spirit to grow. Commit yourself to something new.

Above all, allow yourself to enjoy!

“Noisy Offering”

The” little milk pail” is for our noisy offering for hunger. This goes

toward the Holy Cow Fund, which is a program of NE MN Synod

hunger program .

You are invited to Fellowship every Sunday after worship in the

Fellowship Hall for coffee, juice and snacks. Take time to relax and connect with

your church family.

This year we will return to Release Time. Release Time will be held on Wednesdays, from 1;00 pm until 2:00 pm. at the Aurora UMC. This will include the children from the Lutheran Churches. We will pick up the children at the school at 12:50pm and return them to the school by 1:50 pm to go to their classroom and then to the buses. We will need your help! If you are interesting in helping with Release Time, please let Pastor Barb or Pastor Eric know. We will need your help. Our format will be similar to previous: Worship including songs and prayer, Bible story, followed by worksheets or craft and snack. Release Time will start on September 28, 2016.

LET’S START QUILTING!

It’s that time again! Summer is almost over! It’s time to get busy!

Quilting will begin on Wednesday, September 14 in the church basement. Come on down

any time after 9:00 a.m. Coffee ‘An is at approximately 10:30 a.m. We are usually done

quilting at 12:00 p.m. (sometimes we stay later). Then it is out to lunch for those who wish

to go.

There are many jobs to be done – ironing, knot tying, cutting squares, designing tops and, of

course, sewing. Come join the fun! All are welcome! See you there!
