A CLEAR CALL
When we meet John the Baptist in today’s Gospel account (John 1:29-34), he has already proclaimed that he was not the Messiah but the one preparing the way. The fourth Gospel is careful to present Jesus as distinct from and never subservient to John, even to the point of avoiding the mention of a personal encounter between the two. John simply appears as the forerunner of the one to come. At the same time, the Baptist describes his own faith experience regarding Jesus: “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove…and remain upon him.” John’s description of that descent is like that of a dove seeking its own nest: John saw the Spirit come home to rest in Jesus. Because John recognized the Spirit’s presence in Jesus, he called Jesus the Lamb of God. That title, so familiar to us, occurs only here in the Christian Scripture. The unique feature of the Baptist’s phrase is that Jesus is the Lamb of God. As this Gospel describes it, John the Baptist’s relationship to Jesus was always, “He must increase, I must decrease,” and John’s proclamation that Jesus came from God acknowledged that clearly. John recognized that his vocation was different from Jesus’. While Jesus is the obvious subject of this Gospel selection, we might actually learn more about our vocation from John the Baptist. Outspoken and strong as he was, John knew and admitted his limitations. He said, “I did not know him, “and yet, he dedicated his life “that he might be made known to Israel.” That is a profound expression of humility. It presents John as a servant who knew what it meant to be an apostle. John was simply the one sent to open the way to more than he could imagine. This week’s readings lead us into the season of Ordinary Time with a reflection on whom we are called to be as Christians. They remind us that being a Christian is never a solo performance. We are called together, formed by the word of God to become a light to the nations. Like John the Baptist, we are called not for ourselves, but to be able to point out the Lamb of God to others. When we know and accept that vocation, we can call ourselves the church of God in our own hometown and in our world.
We are asked to remember in our prayers:
Janine Hoffman, Anne Shea, Carol Luty, William O’Donnell, Fran Ward,
Michael and Andrew McCaughey, Bill Denny, Juliette Mikele Doty, Lori Lesutis,
Jo-Ann Stigliano, Johnny Descano Dolores McNamara and Margaret Roussin
and all who care for those who are sick.
Please call the Parish Office at 610-525-0147 if you would like to request yourself or a family member be put on our prayer list for the next 4 weeks. You can also make a request that the prayers of the community be renewed for another 4-week period as often as needed or desired.
H.O.P.E. Helping Other People in Emergencies
If you need a ride to the doctor, shopping, etc., call Sr. Anne at 610-525-0147 ext. 234.
Congratulations to Derek McKinley and Dina DiValerio who were married in our Church last week. May you continue to grow in God’s love for you through each other.
We pray for the happy repose of the soul of Mary Frances Huston, and the consolation of her family.

LITURGY OF THE WORD MINISTERS NEEDED
Our Parish has been blessed to provide a “Liturgy of the Word for Children” program for children ages 6 to 10 at our 11:15 Mass each week. The children are called up by Father, and then asked to go into the daily chapel where a minister who has prepared the lesson, reads the readings of the day. The minister explains through song, discussion, drama or other means what the readings are saying to the children today. There is no experience needed, only background checks. We are in need of ministers for this particular ministry. If you are interested in learning more about it, or being trained to do this, please contact Karen via email at [email protected] or 610-525-0147.
INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK
Food Needs for IHN: If you can donate any of the following food items for our guests when they arrive on Sunday, January 26, please put them in the food box at the entrance of the church next Sunday. 2020 March for Life
The March for Life will take place on Friday, January 24, 2020. You are invited to march with our St. Charles Seminarians who will be leading the way! Prior to the March, Mass for the Philadelphia contingent will be celebrated at 10 am at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with the Seminarians and the Philadelphia pilgrims. Following Mass, we will meet at the Smithsonian Castle next to the Rally to march with our seminarians. Please go to our website, www.phillycatholiclife.org for more information on our meeting place, planning details, and registration information. You can also register on-line for the permits and send the parking permit fee separately.
SPIRITUAL READING GROUP
The Spiritual Reading Group began its monthly meetings again on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Center/Church Office building. At this first gathering of the new year, we began reading a new book put out by Liturgical Press, entitled Oscar Romero: Love Must Win Out. This biography of a people’s saint (recently canonized on October 4, 2018) traces the events leading up to the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero at a chapel altar in San Salvador and the reverberations of that day in El Salvador and beyond. This in-depth look at Archbishop Romero, the pastor-defender of the poor and great witness of the faith, offers a prism through which to view a Catholic understanding of liberation and how to be a church of the poor, for the poor, as Pope Francis calls us to be. Copies of the book are available for those who still wish to join this monthly reading group. If you are interested, please contact Sr. Anne Woodeshick at 610-525-0147 (ext. 234) or email her at [email protected]. Our next gathering will take place on Friday, February 7 from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

STANDING AT THE GATES OF THE NEW YEAR
by Sister Joyce Rupp, SM
Sacred Mystery, waiting on the threshold of this new year,
You open the gates and beckon to me: “Come! Come!
Be not wary of what awaits you as you enter the unknown terrain,
be not doubtful of your ability to grow from its joys and sorrows.
For I am with you. I will be your Guide
I will be your Protector. You will never be alone.”
Guardian of this new year, I set aside my fears, worries, concerns. I open my life to mystery, to beauty,
to hospitality, to questions, to the endless opportunities
of discovering You in my relationships, and to all the silent wisps of wonder
that will draw me to Your heart.
I welcome Your unfailing Presence and walk with hope into this new year.
