A bunch of people gathered outside the town of Bethany. They crowded around the resurrected Christ with excitement, joy, and thoughts of freedom - vengeance on their enemies. There was the feeling that something huge had happened - no one walks out of a grave alive after being crucified. And there was also a huge amount of anticipation, ‘What was Jesus going to do next?’ Some brave soul in the crowd voiced the question everyone was begging to ask, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the Kingdom to Israel?”
See, the people of Israel hadn’t been a sovereign nation for nearly 500 years. Ever since the exiles came back from Babylon, they had been battling occupying forces and empires - Persia, Greece, and Rome. They had been waiting for the Messiah - their Deliverer - for centuries. Jesus was that man, and His followers wanted the Throne of David established again in Jerusalem. So they ask.
Jesus’ response must have been disappointing, even frustrating, “It’s not for you to know the times and dates the Father has set by His own authority…” Instead of giving them the green light to kill Romans and set up an earthly kingdom, He told them to wait. Wait for the Holy Spirit to move and ignite a Kingdom no one expected.
Ever since, people have been seeing signs in the sky, natural disasters, wars and rumors of wars, famine, and the rise of powerful empires as signs of something huge - anticipating a coming Kingdom. A total solar eclipse across the lower 48, a psychopath in North Korea sending ballistic missiles over Japan, Houston and the surrounding areas get nearly a year’s worth of rain in seven days, Americans seem more divided than ever, violence and bloodshed in places of worship, and for 10 years, countries like Iceland and Holland have been aborting nearly 100% of babies that were tested in utero for Downs Syndrome. People see this stuff and ask, “Is THIS the time of Christ’s return?”
We don’t know. We can’t know. But we can wait on the Lord. We can pray as the Holy Spirit moves and ignites the Church to be witnesses in our own towns, the surrounding country, and the uttermost parts of the earth. Let’s stop being so enamored with trying to figure out when Jesus will return, and stay busy helping the poor, sharing Good News, and being people of peace, doing the work of His Kingdom until we hear that trumpet call.

Orange Swan Free Store Building Project - Ground breaking
A proposal was made five years ago this month to the board at Galesburg Christian Church to begin a Free Store. It opened to the public for the first time in October 2012 with 17 families and has grown to see an average 50-60 families, with as many as 110 families. Here are excerpts from original proposal: “It would
be open one Saturday a month and by appointment for special needs. It would be stocked by donations from the church and community. All items would be free to the public with guidelines. The store would be open at any time to a family in the community that has suffered disaster in any way. Items at that time would be available without restriction on an unlimited basis, helping them get back on their feet. By following Acts 2:44, "and all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had", we would like to be able to meet those needs. We would like to name the store the ‘Orange Swan’. We were given an orange swan candy dish with some garage sale items. It's beautiful, and I didn't think it existed, much like the idea of a free store, it will serve beautiful purposes and we didn't think that existed either, but we hope that it will."
Excerpts from groundbreaking Sunday, August 27th: “The high school youth group have been phenomenal to step up and help. God has supplied. God has done amazing things with this store in this little town. When we started, I wondered if we'd have enough donations come in. We have so many that there are times that we have to put a hold on them. People from all around the community have donated. God has supplied. I questioned whether there would be enough help. Linda Kelsey and Patty Lero are consistently found in the store on Friday mornings sorting clothing. Many others have joined in and there have been multiple "mass sorting days." The hands of people serving in the store are around 100 different people. Dean and Greg and Kathy Duff , among other people, have made countless deliveries of furniture to families in the area, about 15 household per month. We have prayed with families, counseled individuals and helped families financially from monetary donations that are received each time the store is open. God has supplied again. The building fund started growing and several generous individuals stepped up in faith and put in larger amounts. God has supplied again! This is not my store. This is not Galesburg Christian Church's store. This is God's store, and he has paved the way since the beginning. Jehovah Jireh is the name for our God, meaning He provides. I am overwhelmed by His provision and so excited to see what He has planned for this church and this outreach in the future.” - Rhonda Kane The work has begun… Right now our building fund sits at $59,500.79. Our goal to fully fund the project is $75,000.
