Our Life Together October 2020 1 Dear Church Family, “For you have need of endurance…” Hebrews 10:36a Long distance running is something I have always admired. I remember watching the Olympics and the marathon race and wondering “how can they endure that grueling course, all those miles with all that fatigue?” I especially think of the runners’ endurance to go the distance. This from a man whose favorite part of running is stopping! Yet these runners don’t stop but they indeed, “endure to the end”. The dictionary defines “endurance” as “the ability to withstand hardship, adversity or stress”. When the author of Hebrews speaks of endurance in Hebrews 10 he uses a word that is a compound of the preposition “under” and the word for “bear, stay, abide, or remain”. Thus the thought of “endurance” in Hebrews 10:36 is to “remain under or bear up under” something. It is in essence to keep running despite the stress, hardship and weight of our circumstances that bear down on us. Our Season of Endurance By my count since Covid-19 began to impact our church, we have gone six plus months of having to endure (“bear-up under”) the tribulation of no meetings and gatherings together as a church family to now more gathering yet with limitations and protocols we all struggle with! I cannot recall in my 40 years of being a pastor a greater stress on the church and what we desire to be as God’s people. We have been distressed to a degree and we have been disappointed to a greater degree as we’ve missed a Good Friday service, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc. We have scrambled to keep ministries going and most importantly to keep us connected as a church family. Emotions have run high, disagreements on how to handle keeping one another safe in love have consumed our leadership and grief at our limitations to greet and hug one another have been well, grievous! In short, we have had to withstand the hardship, adversity and stress of these times. It has not been easy at all! Others Enduring Before Us In context the author of Hebrews tells us that the churches he writes to have seen “sufferings” (10:32) and they have been reproached and faced tribulations as followers of Jesus (10:33). They have endured through persecution and hardship that we are not going through. They suffered persecution. We are not suffering persecution in this pandemic but we are suffering tribulation, a test of our faith in order to cope with our disappointments, distress and discouragement of not being able to gather as we’d like or being inconvenienced by protocols for the safety of others when we do gather. But beloved, we are not alone in Christian history in that endurance. We are not alone in the history of our ancestors who endured wars, famines and natural disasters. We lament our losses but we merely join the ranks of those who have gone before and lost far more than we have. The “race” we are in now is one that has been run by many who have gone before us. And they endured! The Blessing of Enduring As we go through this time of enduring and “run this race” we are comforted to know that God has a purpose in our enduring. James says (1:3-4) “knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance and let endurance have its perfect result so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing”. James tells us that endurance leads us toward maturity (the meaning of “perfect” in the text). So as we keep running, breathing hard, feeling the ache and the pain in our muscles and even disappointment in the pace of our race, we keep going as we “bear up under” those things. For Jesus stands in front of us at the finish line, cheering us on, reminding us that it is worth it. Jesus is actually our focus as “we run with endurance the race set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…” (Heb. 12:1-2a) So dear church, in this season where we are called to endure. In this season that we long to end. In this season where we long to return to “normalcy”, don’t quit! Quitting is always easier than staying. Stay with your church. Stay with your fellowship of other believers. Stay with your eyes on Jesus and not the government nor society, nor culture or even on church leaders. For we do indeed “have need of endurance…” And by God’s grace we have it in Jesus! Serving (and enduring!) with you, Pastor Greg Reider Senior Pastor The Need for Endurance OCTOBER 2020

Breeze is our Church Management System for our church. It is a great tool that we use to stay connected with each other. We rely on pictures of our congregation, especially now when we can’t gather together. Sometimes it helps to put a “face with a name” to know who is being referred to or who is on the Prayer Chain, etc. We would love to have a picture of every member/attender in Breeze, then a photo directory could be printed out. We encourage you to take a couple minutes to put your photo in your Breeze profile. If you don’t know how or would rather not do it, then email it to Teresa at [email protected] and she will add it for you. THANK YOU!

Care & Connections Ministry Pastor Mike Beaudin

Romans 15:4 says, “For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Last month our church hosted an “Intentional Christian Grandparenting” video conference called “FINDING HOPE FOR TODAY”. It was exceptional in its presentations and inspiration. The Legacy Coalition Grandparenting Ministry is committed to seeking and serving the Lord Jesus Christ in reaching future generations for Christ. If you are a grandparent and did not get to attend or watch these powerfully encouraging and practically instructing sessions, well you still can! How? Just let me know and I can get you these videos to borrow that we now have for our church family to use! OR...you can buy these online for yourself if you want, for $20, by going to this link at https://legacycoalition.com/finding-hope-online-event/ (Or just visit their main website at https://legacycoalition.com/ and click “Events” tab, which will take you to it. I would encourage you to soak up the series now. They impacted me personally to be more intentional with our own grandchildren! I plan to view these over again, then maybe again! May God bless each of you grandmas and grandpas as you use these Biblical principles and truths in “Reaching and Equipping all ages (like your grandkids!) for a lifetime of following Jesus!” Thank you to our Idaho Host Site Leadership Team for your dedication in prayer and planning for this event. Thank you also Pastor Matt Beck for your support in our audio/visual areas! You are such a wonderful blessing friend! Be sure to put the dates of March 18-19, 2021 on your calendar for the “Legacy Coalition Grandparenting Summit”. You can register online now at https://legacycoalition.com/ On another note...I am not sure that I ever let you all know that our UBC RTF (Reunion Task Force) Team, which included, Josh Lundberg, Teresa Dudley, Angie Jacobson, Steve Odell, Frank Riskey, Dave Babcock, Cheryl Baines, and myself has not been planning or meeting any longer. This ministry team existed to help reopen our church for in-person worship services, which we did both in June and then again in August. They helped to provide our Elders, who were (and still are) making difficult decisions, with important information and guidance about what we determined to be the best or right “stay healthy” guidelines and protocols. We prayed asking God for His leading, we gathered from the medical world, and we also received MANY instructions to follow from our governing authorities that changed so much through the

days and weeks! Thanks to each of you for serving so wonderfully through these very difficult times in this pandemic with helping to reunite our church family in various ways. We as church leadership continue to follow God’s leading during this COVID –19 time. We all look forward to NOT wearing the face coverings inside our church building or physical distancing, hopefully sooner than later. None of us know exactly when that will be but wait until we get the go ahead to do so by our church leadership and governing officials, etc. We now have a “Cleaning Ministry Team” to sanitize the facilities in between our worship services. If you would like to help serve on this team in this way, can you please contact me at [email protected] or text me on my cell at 208-283-7034, thanks. We do need more help! We continue to practice love towards one another and encourage you to do the same as we follow Jesus! Phil. 2:1-5 says it best!

Worship Ministry Pastor Matt Beck

I am so excited for the fall! I could not be happier about the return of cooler weather, the clearing out of some of that icky smoke in the air, and the return of football season! I know this year does not look like any other fall in the past, but I am grateful for all God is doing through His church and in His people’s lives.

In this month’s newsletter, I want to highlight our newest worship ministry team, the Camera Operators.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit our area back in March of this year, our leadership rallied together to purchase equipment so that we could create an online church service that people could watch from home. That online experience does not happen by itself! I want to thank the people who work behind the scenes to create a quality worship experience for our online viewers. The men on this team include: Colton DePuy, Stephen Baldassarre, Jon Veit, and Jonathan Sexton. These guys have done a tremendous job learning what it takes to create a professional-looking live streamed service. Here are a few of the things that they have had to learn:

The camera operators are responsible for capturing and recording all aspects of the service. They use principles of lighting, staging, focusing, and filtering to achieve a specific visual look for the online viewer. They are an artist at heart as they use their creativity throughout the service. This job has required excellent hand-eye coordination and the ability to stay engaged throughout the entire service. They continuously are thinking ahead and planning what their next camera shot will be, and try to do it so as not to distract the viewer. Each week I notice changes here and there that improve the quality of the presentation.

People tell me all the time how impressed they are with how far this ministry has come and its quality. Please make sure you take a moment to thank these guys for their time and effort in starting this ministry from the ground up. I also want to give a shout out to Jaden Snyder and Curt Goldgrabe, who worked to create the church promo video we are using to advertise for the Senior Pastor position. I am so grateful for Jaden’s time getting different camera shots of Sunday morning ministries. He spent many hours creating and editing the video to be what it is today.

Curt also did a great job sharing our church’s history and putting together an overview of what we are looking for in our next Senior Pastor. Be sure to thank both of these guys for the hard work in creating a quality video to promote the church. If you would like to view the video, you can see it at https://vimeo.com/453119610

If you reach into your pocket, dig into your purse, or even just glance down at your hand, chances are you have an iPhone. With over 45% of the U.S. population owning an iPhone, and Apple valued at over 2 trillion dollars, it’s amazing that there was a time when the tech giant was struggling. The year was 1983. Apple was a fairly new start-up. A young, baby-faced board member named Steve Jobs was determined to not let the company fail. He was looking to build a powerful and creative executive team to lead the company. He set his eyes on John Sculley the President of Pepsi Co. So Jobs flew to New York to get Sculley on board at Apple. What happened has reached mythical status in the business world. Jobs made it to New York and met with Sculley. Their meeting took place in Sculley’s penthouse apartment overlooking the New York Skyline. Sculley had it all. Fame. Clout. Money. Power. Why would he want to leave it behind? As Jobs made his pitch, Sculley repeatedly shot him down. Then Jobs gave Sculley the challenge that changed their lives… and the world. Exasperated, Jobs finally said, “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?” Sculley left Pepsi for Apple, and the rest is history. I was reminded of this famous story when teaching through the book of Ephesians with the Young Adults. As we journey through Ephesians 1, Paul explodes with praise to God. Piling phrases on phrases, cluttering clauses, creating the longest sentence in the Greek New Testament. But it all climaxes in verse 10, God is, “‘uniting’, ‘summing up,’ ‘consummating’ all things in him (Christ). Things in the heavens and things on the earth.” In this insane year, we can scratch our heads and wonder what in the world is going on. What is God doing with all of this mess? Where are things headed? Hour by hour, minute by minute, God is directing our world to be fully under the authority of Jesus Christ, and for his reign to be fully manifested. This is God’s grand venture. His grand plan. The only question is will we join with Him on his grand plan? Or will we settle for sugar water? Making our mission to have the best house, with the most stylish interior. Striving to go on the best vacations and have the best Facebook and Instagram stories to show off to all our friends. Living for making our way up the corporate ladder, chasing clout, having the most respect… living for sugar water? Or do we want to change the world… actually not just

the world... the entire cosmos (vs10 “things in the heavens and on earth”)! Join God on his grand plan for the universe! This is what we have been discussing in Young Adults as we learn about Identity in Ephesians. If you are a young adult and want to learn what all is involved in joining God’s grand plan we would love for you to join us. We meet Tuesdays from 7-9pm at the clubhouse at Kensington Apartments (7466 W. Saxton Dr.). Feel free to reach out to Pastor Ryan at [email protected].

Jr/Sr High Youth Pastor John Buren

Happy fall to everyone, the other most wonderful time of the year! We had a great September, with one of the many big highlights being our Fall Retreat. We took a total of 24 people away to Donnelly for a weekend getaway at Faith Heights Camp. Our theme was “reflect,” and that’s exactly what we did. We spent time reflecting on the things that the Lord has done for His people throughout the Scriptures, as well as what He has done for us in our own lives. We spent over 2 hours of the 48 hour retreat in “personal quiet time,” that is, each person alone with their Bibles spending time with God. We also talked about what it means to be a reflection of Jesus Christ to a world that does not know Him. It was a much needed time for everyone, and a good time growing spiritually, no doubt. Thank you to Julie, Caitlyn, Amy and Bryon for helping out! Another big highlight from September was our return to small groups on Wednesday nights. I really enjoyed being back in Bible study discussions with out students, and right away the impact can be seen as students ask questions, share responses and laugh with one another. We spent the month focused on the topic of how to handle Struggles. I look forward to our topic for October, “Salt & Light,” where we will focus on what it means to fulfill the description that Christ gives for His people in Matt. 5:13-16.

We also had a great time hiking Table Rock as a youth group. Twenty-one of us ventured to the top and back, stopping for a Bible study near the cross. We talked about Psalm 23, a perfect reminder that our Good Shepherd has everything He needs to provides for us all the things that we need. Our cup truly overflows with grace, forgiveness, love and hope. It was a perfect day to be outside getting some exercise. I am so optimistic for all that October has in store for us. Whenever the weather changes I am always reminded of the fact that God is often the Author of change. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there is a time for everything, and as we continue to navigate pandemic circumstances and other changing aspects of life, God is there for us and is planning the outcome for our good (Romans 8:28). This will be our theme for the fall as we adjust to all kinds of things. We’ll spend the evening of Wed., October 28 for a fun night of getting lost in the Farmstead Corn Maze, 6-9:30pm. This will be a great night to invite a friend, too. Personally, I am looking forward to spending some vacation time in the fall. It has been a hectic year, and I look forward to spending some free time with my wife. I am thankful for an amazing volunteer youth staff and church family. God bless you.

Early in 2020, the church leadership recognized that the COVID-19 virus was going to cause or magnify needs within our church body. To do our best to help meet those needs, the Elders directed Tim Crimmins to organize a team of volunteers and and a flowchart to most efficiently meet those needs. The flowchart was shared in the May Newsletter and is not being included here. If you wish to see the flowchart, please refer to the May Newsletter available on our church website. What has prompted this reminder is that although we received several requests for help the first few months of establishing the Needs Ministry, the requests have been few and far between the last several weeks. We know that there have to be needs that are not being communicated and it is our desire to help in any way that we can. Assistance, is of course available to those who call Ustick Baptist Church their church home, but also others whom God places in our lives. The Needs Ministry team is made up of a large number of volunteers, but those that are providing leadership to this ministry team are: —Pastor Mike Beaudin - Pastor of Care & Connections —Tim Crimmins - Elder —Roger Baker - Deacon —Steve Odell - Deacon —Dave Moulin - Deacon Chair —Mary Gray - Deaconess Chair Our team would like to encourage our church family to share any needs they have or that they are aware of with: —Teresa Dudley, our church Administrative Assistant at [email protected] —a Deacon —a Deaconess —Elder —Growth Group leader —or any one of the Pastors

Those needs will be sent to the Deacons as a clearing house and the needs will be forwarded to the appropriate group. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer in serving on this ministry team, please contact any one of us mentioned here. Thank you and may God continue to bless you! “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 These resources are available on our website for you to use…

https://ustickbaptist.org/covid-19 “WRAPPED IN GOD’S LOVE” QUILT GROUP Our ministry makes lap quilts for those who are ill, having surgery, need encouragement, or just need to feel wrapped in God’s love. We also make baby quilts for Birthright. If you know how to sew and would be interested in making quilts (or learning how) we invite you to join us on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month 10am-2pm in the Fireside Room. You don’t need to bring anything but your lunch as we have all the supplies and equipment needed. If you know someone that could benefit from receiving a quilt (they do not necessarily have to be members of our church), please contact Ramona 208-895-8265 or Marguerite 208-340-4924. We will start meeting again in October (8th and 22nd). Join us if you can! We also have plenty of quilts to give, if you know someone who could use a quilt, contact Ramona.

HYMN SING You are welcome to join us as we sing hymns and enjoy being together next Sunday, Oct. 11 at 3:30pm at the Pavilion out back. Questions, contact Judy F. 208-477-7148 or Ali H. 208-939-7517. GEMS (God’s Ever Maturing Saints) On Thurs., Oct. 15 at 11:50am we will be having our luncheon for those over 50. Cost is $5. Please wear a face covering coming in and join us for lunch (you can take it off to eat, of course). Our speakers will be Sam & Melody K. (missionaries UBC supports who are here on leave). Please RSVP to Lee & Judy Fossgreen at 208-477-7148 by October 8. It will be a great joy to see each other! MELODY OF LOVE – LOVE INC There was a great turnout for Love INC of Treasure Valley’s outdoor Melody of Love event celebrating God’s faithfulness! Liberty Quartet encouraged with their gift of music and Lois Tupyi, Executive Director, shared an inspiring yet challenging message. Funds from this benefit event go toward their New Hope Community transformational housing currently being built as an additional incentive for families in their long-term New Hope program. A total of over $126,000 was raised including funds from the 5-week campaign and offerings given that night! They continue to receive funds toward the $200,000 goal. God is good! SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS If you’ve lost a loved one, the approaching holidays can be overwhelming. Surviving the Holidays is an encouraging and insightful video that will help you navigate the holiday season. This will be shown on Sat., Nov. 14 at 9:30am at Sharee McMahon’s home. Questions, contact Sharee 208-473-1903.
