SECOND SUNDAY of ADVENT

Divorced and Re-married? If you are divorced and remarried outside of the Catholic Church without a Decree of Invalidity, or if you are married outside of the Catholic Church, you may not partake of the Sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Until it is shown otherwise through the ministry of the Tribunal, no person is free to enter into another marriage without the appearance or occasion of serious sin. A divorce alone would not affect, or hinder in any way, your participation in the Catholic Church. A divorced Catholic is free to receive the sacraments. However, if you are divorced and have remarried, or if you are divorced and in a new relationship, or if you are living with someone without a Decree of Invalidity (and your former spouse is still living) you may not par-take of the sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Consider seeking a Decree of Invalidity which will enable you to return to a full participation in the sacramental life of the Church. For more information contact Deacon Jim Bindel at the Church office at 696-1253.

Let us prepare ourselves for Christmas! Reconciliation Service at OLQP Friday, December 14 at 7:00 pm

Someone is shouting in the desert . . . . The winding roads must be made straight, and the rough paths made smooth. The whole human race will see God’s salvation!” Luke 3:4b, 5b-6

John the Baptist was a cousin of Jesus. His mother was Elizabeth and his father was Zechariah. John’s role was twofold as a prophet: first, he was to provide hope by announcing the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Secondly, he was to show the people the importance of turning back to God through the forgiveness of sins in baptism.

John wore unusual clothes made from animal skins and he lived in the desert eating locusts and wild honey. One could wonder if we would have been comfortable with John the Baptist coming to our religion classes shouting the Good News of Jesus? Would we have known to welcome him at our Parish Christmas Party, if he had shown up wearing animal skins and bringing his special dish of locusts and wild honey?

I hope so! Yes, God always asks us to look at the heart of people, which is where he lives! If we were to spend a few minutes with John, we could have asked him to explain today’s reading about ‘making the winding roads straight and the rough paths smooth’.

John would have told us we make the road straight when we take the direct path to God through Jesus. By learning about Jesus in religious education classes, praying, reading stories about him in the Bible, going to Mass with our whole Church family, and serving others in need, we take the direct path to knowing Jesus in our hearts and minds. This way we do not take detours on winding roads and make choices that lead us to sin.

Also, John told us to smooth out our rough roads . . . this happens when God forgives our rough spots . . . our sins, and then we forgive others. When we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God forgives our sin. Through this Sacrament, we can once again experience God’s love and a special blessing of peace . . . as John would say, we are set on the smooth path of life with God as our Guide.

So, let’s make it a point to all come to the Advent Reconcilia-tion Service on Friday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. And let us thank God that this path leads us to where we can live forever with Him and those we love who also follow God, as well as the wonderful saints like John the Baptist!

Love grows when God’s Good News is spread; as we celebrate

"In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar… and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee… and Lysanias was tetrach of..." Did you need to pinch yourself awake during the first few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the Baptist received quite a prelude today as Luke described the religious and political leadership of the time period. Scripture is divinely inspired, and we believe that everything that made it into the Bible is there for a reason. These lines remind us of an important truth. The Christmas story isn't a fairy tale or nursery rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give meaning to the holiday. At Christmas, God's presence is made tangible in a precise moment in time. The birth of Christ is a historical event. As precursor to Jesus' preaching, the ministry of John the Baptist is also a historical event. "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John's call to repentance and the forgiveness of sins

happened in a particular time and place. But that does not mean it is limited to first century Palestine! God

continues to move in our daily lives. What we hear in today's Gospel - and what we anticipate at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God works in concrete ways in time and space. He did that 2,000 years ago, and He continues to do so today! This Sunday, examine your own Christmas preparations. Is there anything you need to repent of before the Christmas

season? Are there low points in your life, valleys to "be filled" by the love of God? Are there mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life? How can they be "made low"? Are you making decisions that have moved you away from God? This Advent season is the time for them to "be made straight and made smooth." Prepare the way in your heart for Christ today!

SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Making straight the path of Christ is not only the vocation of John the Baptist but of every baptized believer. God desires to lead us with His mercy and justice. These are essentials in God's kingdom and some of the gifts Christ's future coming will bring. But our world's systems do not place emphasis on these values. Wanting greater profits, downsizing companies in order to reduce expenses, using others for personal or corporate gain, and valuing institutions over people are just a few of the "values" we encounter every day. We are called to straighten the path to Christ. In a world that places value on things that are counter to our call, how do we respond? We need to learn to discern what is of real value and then take the risk of bringing it into the marketplace.
